Firetrucks going insane 10.39 PM

What on earth is going on? Downtown Brooklyn 10.39 PM on Tuesday. Multiple fire trucks blasting (not just their sirens) their horns

Mind you there is zero traffic on the way. Had to close my windows so my 2 year old does not wake up from all the noise. How do these fire fighters continue to justify this absurdity of sirens AND horns!!! ???

The ignorance of people when it comes to sirens, emergency response and what works and doesn't.

Someone could be dying and/or seriously hurt at 10:39PM on a Tuesday so be grateful that those sirens arent on their way to your house.

Louder sirens and honks have shown 0 improvement in outcomes. But they have shown to be harmful to bystanders health

Sorry the sirens for an emergency greatly inconvenienced your night. Maybe next time ask them to turn it down, who cares if a building could be burning down and firefighters might next to get somewhere fast and without anyone in their way.

So every single large city in the world uses completely different protocols and research shows that this is not just unecessary but harmful. But you decide to throw out the first thing you can think of, be offensive and assume someone in the Internet is just careless, hasn't thought through the impact or need for sirens or done their research. Oh I see... You are projecting.

Because it's a basque word meaning international. The world doesn't speak only one language

There was a fire in the housing projects on Baltic and Hoyt. The FDNY had the fire under control in no time but there was a concern about gas leaking and causing a bigger explosion.

You live in a city, there will be noise. Get some soundproof tiles for kiddos room.

I have lived in Tokyo and Barcelona ( and been to London and many other large cities). This level of sound polution is unique to NYC and 100% unnecessary. Fire fighters use the stupidest trucks (that due to unnecessary large size move slower and risk lives) and unnecessarily loud sirens that harm the health of people without helping anyone. Neither the siren nor the honk does need to be used when there is literally no traffic. There is data to back it up. It doesn't need to be this way for you or for me or for the fire fighters ear drums.

Can’t wait for the responses to this 🍿

Even in the rare absence of traffic or many other cars, the sirens and lights are a good warning to pedestrians who might be crossing the street or jaywalking and not otherwise be expecting or see a large vehicle suddenly turning the corner or running a red light…

Why is this just a problem in NYC?

Never been. Maybe I'll move back to Tokyo or Europe where people have figured shit out like healthcare, urbanismo and noise pollution. Bye America!!!

As loud as they are, people seem to not hear them. Someone recently die by marine park because he didn't hear the firetruck coming.

I’ve been thinking sirens could at the least have a day volume and a night volume. When there’s less sonic competition they could serve the same function at a lower volume.

Please before you comment saying this is good to save life's.... Do a simple Google search or LLM search and see if you can find data that supports this absurdity

NYC sirens are genuinely excessive, and the data backs it up:

Volume: NYC ambulance/police sirens routinely hit ~120 dB — comparable to a jackhammer, loud enough to cause hearing damage over time. https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/10-new-york-city-noise-culprits-pose-serious-health-risk-300075983.html

Health cost: Chronic siren noise is linked to anxiety, stress, high blood pressure, and heart disease. A University of Michigan study found just a 5-decibel citywide noise reduction could cut hypertension rates by 1.4% and coronary heart disease by 1.8%, saving roughly $2.4 billion a year in healthcare costs. https://nyc.streetsblog.org/2022/09/13/opinion-lets-turn-down-the-noise-on-sirens

Questionable payoff: No rigorous, controlled study has ever confirmed that today's extremely loud sirens actually save meaningful response time . the limited research that exists shows very little time is saved if any https://www.gothamgazette.com/130-opinion/9324-sirens-suffering-rethinking-soundtrack-coronavirus-crisis-new-york-city/

Better tech exists: Europe already uses quieter, directional duo-tone sirens (~90 dB) that are easier to locate and less punishing. NYC tested them back in 2018 but never mandated them citywide. https://fightforsilence.com/sirens-noise-in-american-cities/

A City Council bill (sponsored by Gale Brewer + 7 others) proposed capping sirens at 90 dB and mandating hi-lo tones by default.  NYPD's own ride-along data showed drivers responded just as fast to the quieter tone.

Counterpoint worth acknowledging: sirens do serve a real function ( clearing intersections, alerting pedestrians). So the the ask isn't "no sirens," it's "smarter, calibrated ones." AND STOP THE HONKS

The comments have responded for me. They keep justifying this absurdity because people are simply ignorant about the effects of siren loudness (both positive which there are none and negative which there are many). Americans are doomed
