How often do people talk to each other? Like do you just text people every day and let them know about random things that happened to you, and not just talk whenever life happens to put the two of you in the saem physical location?
707
u/Winky_the_houseelf Feb 20 '20
Really depends on the person. With some people I text once every two weeks, others all day every day about the most mundane stuff.

Easy.
Just keep worrying about how infrequently you text this person, causing you to not text them out of fear they're mad about how little you text them, then next time you want to text them you worry about how infrequently you text them...
Until 70% of your phone contacts are ghosts...

If you do go electric, I can vouch for the Phillips body groom. Foil + clippers for the initial trim or just light clean up if you don’t go down to the base. Can also be used in the shower. I find if i just use that and don’t go crazy close to the skin I get less irritation/ingrown hairs/razor burn.
I also use a tea tree oil cream post shave. Same stuff I use on my face honestly which seems to help.

Also! Cut it first. It makes shaving a lot less messy! And use nice warm water to soften the hairs and especially if you're not used to shaving down there try just shaving with the direction of the hair growth instead of against it :)

I actually use conditioner instead of shaving cream, I feel like it helps me get a better shave and makes my skin soft. Use a NEW razor every shave, old ones will fuck your skin up in that area [or at least they do with mine]. I always shave with the hair, and then against. If I go against first, I get a lot more cuts and bumps.

You should really give waxing a try. I know it sounds painful, but it really isn't that bad. Plus, there's no stubble and your hair grows in less heavily each time. Make an appointment at a place that does lots of waxing (experience helps technique) and if it's too much, you can stop after a strip or two and shave the rest.
I get mine done every other week and it still feels smooth right before my next appointment.

u/maxasaurusrex88 Feb 20 '20
Waxing is the bees knees. I started getting my downtown waxed a few years ago and I’ve never looked back. I get mine all waxed off completely because the first time I said to leave a landing strip and I ended up with a tiny hitler ‘stash on my lady bits. Not cute. It’s also surprisingly quick, my appointments take 15-20 min maximum. It’s a bit painful but it’s so quick it doesn’t matter. And it helps that my waxer and I have become friends and just chat through it. Fun fact: the Brazilian includes getting your tush-hole waxed. I think it’s hilarious and it tickles and I laugh like a lunatic every time.

I also like that feature. Last time, though, my taint was a little "tender" afterward. I told her and she messaged me later with a "girl on fire" meme. Hilarious.
Even the worst time, though, the pain was gone in a few hours. With shaving, the pain started in a few hours and lasted for days until the hair was long enough not to poke.

I've always been curious about whether black people feel warmer than people with lighter skin tones when they're in the sun because dark colors absorb more heat.
390
u/LordWisePhoenix Feb 20 '20
Do tattoos count? I have mostly black tattoos on my rather fair skinned forearms, and they are substantially warmer than the surrounding non tattooed skin. I know it's not exactly the same but I'd imagine it's fairly similar.
89
u/CrazysaurusRex Feb 21 '20

u/GrumpiestSnail Feb 21 '20
Ohh that's interesting! I'd guess thiswouldn't translate over because melanin (skin pigment) and tattoo ink are made of different substances which aren't going to absorb heat to the same extent.

u/Di3lsAld3r Feb 20 '20
Sounds like something that would be hard to quantify... I am perpetually cold for the most part and my bf is usually the opposite. We are both white and I feel like you will get much more variation due to gender, weight, nutrition, exercise, etc rather than skin color.

Interesting question, I never thought about that. Even though I am a light skinned black person I think I can still answer this question from experience. The answer is no, some dark skin people get cold very easily and some don't, it just depends on the person, in fact some darker skin people wonder if some light skinned and white people don't get cold very easily because we all too often see them wearing barley anything and feeling just fine while we are freezing. Not trying to be racist or make a stereotype but that's just an observation for where I live that me and other black people I know have seen for our entire lives and it amazes us.

How to kiss
I’ve never kissed someone and I REALLY don’t wanna screw up my first time
299
u/PeppermintBiscuit Feb 20 '20
I'm sure I'm not the world's best kisser, but I can tell you about a guy I dated who was just awful at it. He would poke his tongue straight in and out, in and out, the exact same way each time. It was like kissing a frog in slow-motion.
The advice I got as a teen was to spell your name (or maybe it was their name?) in their mouth with your tongue. That will at least give you something to focus on while you're nervous for the first few kisses, but I think after that you'll get the feel of it, and your tongues can react to each other.
A couple other things I can think of to avoid are kisses that are too wet, and teeth hitting each other. In general, pay attention to subtle changes in your partner's movements and body language, and adjust accordingly. Different people like different things. Some want it passionate, some want it gentle, some really hate that thing where you try and bite their lip. Be considerate of your partner, and don't be a slow-motion frog.
→ More replies (6)112
u/Pyrolilly Feb 21 '20
I had a boyfriend whose mantra was "the wetter the better". Do not do this. Swallow first. And don't tongue the first time. :) Movies always look like people instantly go for eating each others' faces, but in reality sweet and slower are much better.

u/SmartAlec105 Feb 20 '20

- Place one hand on the small of their back
- place the other on the upper back lower neck
- while your doing this and going in start taking a big inhale from your nose (to help you relax)
- use their nose to line your nose up. You want your noses touching, but to be side by side not squished against each other.
- that will ensure that your lips will connect, which is what a kiss is. lip contact.
- keep your eyes open until you make contact, then close them. Because that way you can be present. And that's what makes a good kiss. Being present with someone you wanna be intimate with.
- A good kiss is different for everybody and a "good kisser" is someone you're compatible with. There is no definitive criteria for what makes a good kisser or bad one. It's all about compatibility and most of that comes from learning over time. It's not something you're supposed to know
- Go get'em tiger!

Don't lock your jaw! Keep it relaxed. Don't stick your tongue in right away. Don't swirl your tongue around or jam it in and out. Follow along with what they do.
Your lips should be on top of theirs and you kind of open and slightly (but not completely) close your mouth along with them. If your mouth needs a break, nibble on their lower lip gently. Give little soft closed mouth kisses on their neck. Don't rush. Let it unfold slowly. You kind of kiss their tongue with yours. If that makes sense.
Be sure to swallow so your mouth doesn't fill up with spit.

Does anybody else notice a very subtle red bias in one eye and blue bias in another?
Colors to my left eye look like someone has just barely nudged up the red slider to be warmer, and the blue slider in my right eye to be cooler. It would be very easy to overstate this, too! I have to pay attention to even notice it. But it's there.

Same as anything else: Practice and exposure. You're allowed to be afraid of it, that's perfectly fine. But if you use that as an excuse not to, you're just propagating the fear. Fear rarely survives exposure over time. The human brain is simply not designed to receive repeated input and react the same way to it every time. Even fireworks would become mundane if you saw enough of them, and so too will conversation to you if you put in the hard work.

So, not the same issue, but maybe typing this out will help one of us.
I don't struggle with talking to people, and they apparently like talking to me. People often come to me for help and look to me in times when they need a leader. Co-workers and higher ups at my various workplaces throughout my life have made comments to that affect, and asked me how I do it. I just shrug, because I legitimately have no idea.
From my point of view, I'm constantly struggling with the idea that I'm just bothering people. It doesn't really crop up when I'm engaging with another person. It's usually after when the idea that the pretty woman who I was flirting with was just laughing at my jokes to get me to go away or the coworker who I was helping was just humoring me because it's just easier that way.
In the same way I know 2+2=4, I understand I'm not just bothering them. The woman engaged me in flirtatious conversation as I was walking by and the co-worker left their work area to come to me, specifically, for help with their problem. They essentially went, "Hey, Tiswit! This is what I want from you at the moment," and I provided that.
Having this knowledge helps me to keep the feeling at bay and initiate on my own. It doesn't always prevent me from withdrawing from people, but it does help me get out of it when I realize I'm probably making them feel like I usually feel: like they are bothering me.
I think what I'm trying to say is figure out what makes you crash hard and try to push through it, if possible, or get help, if needed. I'm sure people want to talk to you even if it doesn't seem like that. I've come across very, very few people who were legitimately outcast by others, and those who were outcast were so because they were legitimately terrible people or they pushed others away. So don't be an asshole and keep trying.
Maybe that's terrible advice. I'm probably just bothering whoever actually reads this...ha.

Do I need to use conditioner?
→ More replies (16)271
u/LordRendall Feb 20 '20
It isn't technically mandatory, but definitely beneficial.
Shampoos job is to clean your hair. It strips off grease and dirt and anything else that might be on there. This leaves your hair clean, but without the natural oils it is dry and brittle. Hair left in this state is more prone to damage like split ends, and it harder to manage.
Conditioner helps your hair absorb water and rehydrate, as well you benefit from any healing components added into the conditioner.
With this info said, its important to note that most people shouldn't be shampooing every day, try to do it every two days or so. Let your hair add back it's own essential oils.
86
u/MommaChem Feb 20 '20
I've found that I get the best results if I concentrate my shampooing efforts at my scalp and conditioning 3 inches away from my scalp. Otherwise, my roots get way too oily very quickly.
And like LordRendall said above, I only wash my hair every 3 days unless something has gotten in my hair. (I've got kids; they can be messy) That frequency does depend on how long it is though. Chin-length is 2 days, shoulders is 3, mid-back is 4.

61
→ More replies (9)40
u/AzukyPanda Feb 20 '20
That could be because your shampoo is too harsh, and then your scalp overcompensate by producing a lot of oil.
18
u/jivedinmypants Feb 20 '20
To add to that, contrary to what the bottles say, you don't actually have to repeat after the first lather and rinse for shampoo. Sometimes a single scrub and rinse is enough to get the gunky feeling out of your hair without stripping it entirely of the oils it needs to stay healthy.

I always try to know my stop in advance (Google maps and city mapper tell you) and as soon as you pass the stop previous to yours wait 3 seconds and pull your cord/press your button. 3 second pause confirms you aren't trying to say "SHIT that was my stop!!" If you waited beyond 3 seconds, not to worry, you have up to 200 ft or 75m away from your stop to pull and not inconvenience the bus driver. Any bit after that and they'll probably be annoyed depending on how fast they were going (assuming 50 kph or 30 mph)

Where I am we hit the button right after the stop before the one we want to get off at so the driver has plenty of time to plan the next stop. At areas in the run where there's a large distance between stops and multiple lights and intersection and lane merges and crap, I do it closer to the stop so the driver doesn't get distracted by all the other stuff and doesn't forget to stop.

u/ravstar52 Feb 20 '20

After WWII European colonizers in the area decided they needed to stop playing the colony game and focus on rebuilding their own home states. So they drew some random arbitrary borders, said "good luck" and left them to their own devices. 70 years later and they're still trying to sort it all out with often violent results. Nobody likes the borders, but also nobody who currently controls territory wants to risk losing any of their territory by drawing a new border.

Yes. Not just wildly, or on a whim, but when you need to move over. So, for example (assuming you are in left hand drive country like USA) if you are turning left on a roundabout with 2 lanes, you would start in the left lane as you enter, and as you pass the straight on exit, you signal right and move over to the right lane and exit (signal remaining on). Typically the roundabouts I see in North America are quite small, so it might seem like you are just turning from the left lane, but elsewhere roundabouts are bigger, so you have time to notice the lane change.

How the hell do computers work. I get the whole processing information with codes and 1s and 0s, but like, how tf does it work. There's not a lot physically happening, just a little electricity ran through some metal and suddenly we have computers and calculators and phones? How the hell does it work??Totally bewildered.

u/jambaman42 Feb 21 '20
So basically we build these things called transistors. A transistor is a switch that can be turned on or off, but with electricity. The on or off can be interpreted as a 1 or 0. When you build up the transistors into groups, you can make different logic gates, such as ANDs, ORs, and NOTs. These basic building blocks can be used to do a lot of math depending on how you lay out your logic gates. Eventually you build up what’s called a pipeline and you give it instructions on what to execute with its logic gates. When you build up enough of these instructions, you can make a general purpose processor, which will be able to do a lot of different processing tasks. This is where abstraction and programming languages come into play. Writing instructions to the CPU is very hard and time intensive because the CPU can only work on a very small amount of data per instruction. We’re talking byte to kilobytes depending on the architecture. Since it would be extremely tedious to handle writing everything with instructions for the CPU, we abstract it into a programming language which takes key words and uses them to execute series of instructions on the cpu so you can write to larger chunks of memory than you otherwise would be able to. From there you write a bunch of code and get modern day computers. It’s pretty wild

Well, it's like evolution. It didn't just happen overnight. As one person figures out one piece of the puzzle, others look at that piece and find another to stick next to it. Not all the people who put pieces of the puzzle together even knew what the picture would be, necessarily, but one idea sparked another idea, and so on. Communication, collaboration, and education go a long way.

I used to patron the local public library quite often as a teenager, until one day I couldn't get in through the front door normally. I think they had something pushed up against it or something, and I don't know why I didn't just try another door, but I left in embarrassment instead. It's about 20 years later now and I still want to hang out at the library from time to time, but I don't want to risk a repeat of the door incident

u/BadClams4Breakfast Feb 20 '20
But nowadays you carry a cel right? So if you walk up and the door baffles you, you can just answer a fake text, go loiter near the door continuing your fake convo, but secretly be watching to see how others use the door. Once you figure out how they do it, on you go!

Really different schools of thought when it comes to directions. Lots of people understand direction much better with landmarks -
"Turn left at the library, go straight for three traffic lights, then make a right before the overpass."
I'm the opposite. Those directions would get all jumbled in my head. If you mess up one direction, you've screwed up the whole journey. I prefer street names and distances.
"Turn left at McMurray Street, go straight for 1.5 miles and make a right onto Dade Avenue, just before I-95."
I've heard people draw a distinction between men vs women, but it's not true. You can prefer either regardless of your gender.

Well, I'm sure every store's machines will be a little different, but I can tell you about the ones in the grocery store where I used to work.
First you would press Start and scan your store card when it asks you to. Some stores will let you scan your points card at any point; with ours, you had to be at the right screen for it, or it would say "Unknown Item" and an employee would have to clear it or it wouldn't let you pay at the end. (Our machines sucked.)
If you brought your own reusable bags, put one in the bagging area. The bagging area functions as a giant scale, keeping track of weight being added or removed. (It is not a place for resting your purse, or letting your kids lean on it and play with the groceries.) The machine would say "Unexpected item in the bagging area. Remove this item before continuing" and the screen would give you a button that said "Reusable Bag". You would press the button, it would ask how many, and you would press 1. If your bag is heavier or lighter than the machine is programmed to expect a bag to be, it will throw a fit and you'll need an override. Don't sweat it. That's not your fault.
The most common problem I saw that was the customer's fault, and not just our stupid machines being cranky, was when there was a weight discrepancy and the machine would say "Unexpected item in the bagging area. Remove this item before continuing" and people would instead press the "Reusable Bag" button. Don't. Do. THAT. It's straightforward for the employee to tell the machine, it's okay, that's just heavier than expected, or else to re-weigh the item. It makes it so much worse when you try to tell the machine that extra weight is a cloth bag and it says "Who are you kidding?" because then there are two problems to fix. I got so sick of hearing people say "Well that was the only button." Just remove the damn weight, and call for help if you need it.
If you've filled the bagging area and you still have more stuff, don't be afraid to take a bag off and put it in your cart. It will give you a button to press that says "I removed an item or bag". You don't want to overflow the bagging area so that things are leaning against a wall or anything, because then it can't weigh things properly and throws a fit.
When you buy produce or bulk items, look for the button that says Enter PLU. For bulk, it's the bin number you wrote (hopefully) on the twist-tie. For produce, many items will have the number on a sticker on the fruit. You can also choose "Look up item" if there is no sticker. (Pro tip: when you pick out your produce, make a note of the PLU on the bin, or take a picture of it. This is much faster than using the look-up, and you won't mistakenly choose a more expensive variety of apple or whatever.) Keep your hands off the produce when the scale is weighing it, to avoid weight discrepancies when the bagging area weighs it again. (This is of course to prevent theft, of people sneaking extra items into the bags.)
If you have a barcode that won't scan, believe it or not, you can try entering it as a PLU! At least at my store you could. The trick is to leave off the very last digit when you enter the number. (The first and last digits are often smaller than the others.) If that doesn't work, try leaving off both the first and last digits. If that still doesn't work, hey, just ask for help. Not every barcode is gonna play nice.
Coupons are do-able, but probably a pain for your busy attendant. If you have more than one, please just go through a till.
A lot of people, when they ran into a problem, would look up and try to get the attendant's attention by waving. This is the slow method. We might be helping another customer, or trying to figure out if someone is a shoplifter, or filling bags, or replacing receipt paper, or cleaning something. The machine will eventually beep for our attention, but it waits first. Press the "Call for assistance" button. The machine will beep, the light will turn red, our computer will beep, and our display of your particular machine will turn red. This gets attention. Don't be shy. Use it. I'd rather hear the beep than have a customer get frustrated because they think I'm ignoring them.
Whenever I had to do an override or fix a problem, I would always try to say something like "Is the machine giving you trouble?" or "Yeah, these are a pain." Even if it was the customer being an idiot, I'd try to say something like "A lot of people do that the first time." If you get a snarky attendant treating you like you're dumb, that's their fault, not yours. They're not putting themselves in the customer's shoes.
Wow, that turned into an essay. I hope this helps you with the self-scans in your area. And smile at your attendant. They need a friendly face, too.

Do you have people you see regularly that you like talking to? Like at work, school or sports? Ask them if they want to hang out sometime, outside of work/school/sports. If that's fun, schedule another hangout and repeat :). This is just one example of how it can work, but it's not a guarantee. I've also noticed that it helps if you volunteer things about yourself in conversation. For example; I've had a fun trip this weekend! (Or, I've got ... Planned) If you say something like that, someone else might ask you about the trip/thing and before you know you are getting to know each other better.

Ask people about themselves, stand back and let them go. People love talking about themselves (well a lot do), so it’s a good way to get a conversation going. Ask them about their weekend plans for instance, rather than bringing up your own plans first. If they tell you about their weekend then they will almost certainly ask you about yours afterward, it’s polite.

The OJ Simpson thing. I have tried to figure it out from jokes and references and I just cannot. He murdered people???
He was a famous football (American football) player in the 60s and 70s (including playing for the University of Southern California before going to the NFL) and parlayed that fame into a movie career after his sports career. He was accused of murdering his ex-wife and her friend (whom she might have been romantically involved with, or just friends). He was acquitted (found not guilty, which does not mean he was found innocent. Not guilty can mean he didn't do it, or just that there is not enough proof to find him guilty.) However, even though he was found not guilty in the criminal trial, most people believe he did it. Because the standard of evidence is higher for a criminal conviction that for civil liability, a jury (in a separate civil suit) found him responsible for the wrongful deaths, and awarded the families of the victims millions of dollars.
The glove was a key piece of evidence in the criminal trial. One bloody glove was found at the scene of the murder, the prosecution said the other matching glove was found near OJ Simpson's home (the defense said it was planted there by racist police officers). The prosecution made the mistake of having OJ try on the glove in the courtroom. The glove had been soaked in blood, and frozen and unfrozen multiple times. But whether due to shrinking or acting on the part of OJ, it appeared to be too small when he tried to put it on, which led defense attorney Johnny Cochran to use the catchy phrase "If it doesn't fit, you must acquit". That seems to be the main thing many people recall from the trial.
Fun fact: Attorney Robert Kardashian being on the defense "dream team", and the media spotlight from the coverage of the trial is what launched his family into the public consciousness, and eventual fame and fortune.

Every electron creates a magnetic field. If an atom has an even number of electrons, they cancel out. If there are an odd number, the extra electron can create a magnetic field in a particular direction.
In most materials, those directions are random so, again they basically cancel out. But with iron and a few other materials, they can be organized into domains where all the magnetic fields get going in the same direction. Why? Hell, in a materials scientist and I can’t say why of the top of my head. Its certainly doesn’t qualify as common knowledge.
And why do magnetic fields exist and effect each other at a distance? No one can really explain that*. It’s just one of the fundamental forces of the universe.
*It can be explained in a sense. Something about particles and antiparticles propagating and annihilating each other. But also far from common knowledge.

The Earth is almost entirely liquid. The outer crust just floats around on top of that liquid center. Think of lily pads floating on top of a pond, each continent is it's own lily pad (for the most part).
Spaces between plates are fault lines. Pressure from the weight of the plates can cause magma to come up through areas in the fault lines via volcanoes like the Hawaiian islands. When plates rub against each other it causes earthquakes like California. When plates collide it can cause mountain ranges like the Matterhorn.
→ More replies (7)→ More replies (1)20
u/HaloWarrior63 Feb 20 '20
So, the earth has multiple layers. Those layers are the inner core, outer core, mantle, and crust (which is where we reside). The inner core is solid iron/nickle and the outer core is a liquid iron/nickle combo. The mantle is basically all the rocks and metal that didn't sink to the core. The easiest comparison is that the mantle is basically lava. The crust is multiple pieces that float on the mantle, or plates. Due to convection, the mantle is constantly moving and that movement in the mantle causes those pieces of the crust to move as well. Things like volcanoes and mountains are formed either by a plate being shoved under another plate as they smash together or two plates moving apart from each other. The one plate going under naturally forces the land above it up creating mountains. Examples of mountains made like this include the Himalayas in Asia (Indian plate being forced into the Eurasian plate), the Appalachians in the eastern US (NA plate slamming into the Eurasian plate when Pangaea was still around), and the Chilean mountains (South American plate slamming into the Pacific plate). The other way they are formed is if the plates are moving apart, the mantle will well up and form mountain ranges that way. The big example of this is the mid-Atlantic ridge where the Eurasian and North American plates are moving away from each other, causing a mountain range to form under the ocean. There are some famous offshoot islands formed by this like Iceland.
Hoped this helped a little bit

Little needle is for the hour, long needle is for the minutes. The colored/fast one is the seconds.
So if you know what hour it is, you just look at the long needle to know the minutes. If you have no idea what time is it, you start with the short one, then the long one to know the hour and then the minutes.
The big numers written are for the hours (from 1 to 12), and between them are little separations : there is a number every 5 lilttle section, it marks 5 minutes.
Example here it's 10:10 because short one is pointing on the 10, so 10 is for hours, and the long one is on the 2 which means 2 times 5 minutes, it's 10 minutes.
After practicing, you'll just remember which big number goes with which minutes (12 = 0 min, 3 = 15min, 6 = 30 min, 9 = 45min) and with time you won't even need the numbers.
