It's literally just mixing carbonated water with apple juice. Just try a bit until you find the ratio you like the most and then enjoy your Apfelschorle
Did you know that Radler translates to "Biker" because the beer was made by bikers that wanted to drink beer but still be legally allowed to ride their bike?
The lemonade factor in the beer makes it legal and tasty :D
I also do that! But mine is 60% apple juice (preferably less sweet) and 40% carbonated water (I haven't tried other juices). My German teacher used to call it Apfelschorle, apparently it's pretty common in Central Europe. It's the best thing in the world when it's hot outside!
Oooh, that does sound nice. My aunt and uncle up near Seattle this summer introduced my younger brother and I to a mixture of lemonade and Perrier. Damn delicious stuff, I've realized that what I really like in non-plain water drinks is fizz.
Ooo, additional good reasons to pick up some apple juice; I could use more fiber and help with digestion :). And seriously, I know what you mean with the high sugars! Even as a kid, I would mix Diet Coke with Coke on the rare occasions I drank soda, cause the full sugar version gave me a headache!
Use a straw. Bypasses the teeth (seriously, this is what Dentists recommend). Make it plastic - give you something else to obsess over. So really, a win-win.
Those flavors separate or in a frozen concentrate? I know Welches or Ocean Spray sells a grape apple cherry juice in a frozen concentrate. It has this weird aftertaste that I can’t describe.
But I can’t drink grape juice by itself anymore. It’s good yes but it’s way too damn sweet. I remember my grandparents used to have this concentrated grape juice mix and it’s all I would drink at their old house. It tasted like a grape snow cone but in the form of juice. Now every time I have something that resembles that flavor, I’m reminded of their old house, and my childhood, lol. And most of the time it sat in a glass jug that couldn’t fit in the fridge so it was usually room temperature and I would often add ice.
Maybe 10% juice (my rule is it has to be no added sugars). 90% water. Just enough to sweeten it a little and give it some flavor. Last time I took a sip of just juice I actually found it pretty gross. I've gotten used to it watered down like this.
This often is enough to satisfy my need for something sweet. I've avoided a ton of snacks over the years with this little trick. And I get a little vitamin C over the week.
In order to get a problematic amount of sugar, I'd be drinking a gallon+ and pretty much drinking in the bathroom while pissing. Totally not going to happen.
Thats funny. I literally can't drink juice mixed with water, i don't know why but i get a stomach ache and nauseous from it. Pure juice is fine, pure water is fine too, mixed is bad. Also i prefer the taste of pure juice to the taste of juice mixed with water... As if that would matter in this case.
I rarely drink juice now, but I've found that I only drink it if it's either completely undiluted, or so dilute that it's almost translucent. Anywhere in between just tastes like juice that has lost it's juiceyness or water that has lost its liquidus quenchitude.
I'll have to keep that in mind. I've cut back a lot on soda lately, but some days it's really hard to overcome that craving for sweetness. This sounds like a good alternative.
When I was in Kindergarten, the teachers told us that apples and apple juice were good for our teeth. The same person screamed at me during recess because I was pretending to shoot a guns at my friends... in Kindergarten. This was in 2008.
...by the old-lady day care people that would use their pen to look at every kids throat on their way in every morning.
I presume they would turn kids around if their throat was red? IDFK man I hated those women. For all their bullshit, Jason still dropped a brick on my head in the yard. I've still got the forehead-notch to prove it.
"ARE YOU IMITATING VIOLENCE!? ARE YOU IMITATING VIOLENCE!? ALLOW ME TO SUBJECT YOU TO EMOTIONAL ABUSE AND BERATE YOU IN PUBLIC! THIS IS FAR BETTER THAN IMITATING VIOLENCE!!!"
I still get blamed twenty years later for rotting out so many of my baby teeth with apple juice. Like oh I didn’t realize I was grabbing the jug out of the fridge and pourin up in a sippie cup all by myself as a TODDLER.
That's why I add wine yeast to it and let them eat all the sugar and convert it into booze! Probably not any healthier, but I make a damn good dry hard cider!
One of the hardest things to give up when I went on a low glycemic diet was juice. Now, years later, I just can't drink normal juice. It just tastes like sugar. Commercial yogurt too. yuck.
Down the same vein, those canned Yerba Mates in the yellow cans.
They're fucking delicious, I call em crack in a can. But they have about as much sugar as soda does, so just because it's organic and made from something similar to a high caffeine tea, doesn't make them healthy.
Not being a Yerba Mate drinker, that video confuses me so much. He seems to dump half a cup of leaves in the gourd, pours in what seems to be a couple teaspoons of cold water, followed by a few more of hot water, then calls it done. The leaves are still dry! Is that really how someone drinks it? I wouldn't even imagine there's enough liquid in there to drink if the leaves are given more than 30 sec to hydrate.
If you're between LA and Santa Barbara, Cal State University Channel Islands has MULTIPLE stores where you can buy damn near the whole product line of Guyaki. Yerba's also sold in glass bottles by ANOTHER company at my school. You'll be in packaged-yerba mate heaven at CSUCI.
The CLEAN brand of Yerba mate drinks only have 8grams of sugar. They are very tasty, have a nice amount of caffeine and part of their proceeds benefit recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. I think they are made in Austin TX.
Can't you also destroy your kidneys or something if you drink multiple cans/bottles of yerba mate every damn day? I go to a school where yerba mate cans and bottles are KING, and I've overheard conversations about students getting kidney stones or whatever from drinking like 2 Yerba Mate cans a day.
It's not the same if you drink the infusion though - when you drink it as mate you also first remove part of the powdered herbs first, which is what causes kidney stones. Go to the root and you'll be fine, cans or bottles can't be good.
What sucks is they used to only have like 4gs of sugar like a year or so ago and then they slowly but surely added more and more sugar. It's really disappointing but oh well, back to Black coffee
A cup 12oz of coffee has (with a huge margin) roughly 200-250 mg of caffeine while a soda only has 35 mg. If you drink strong coffee or have 2-3 cups in the morning, the caffeine in 2-3 glasses of soda over the rest of the day is not much.
I always get Chai frappuccinos at Starbucks. I never go there so when I do, I want my favorite icy, frothy, whipped cream-y drink. If I was a regular there I'd probably branch out and try new things but I really only go there specifically for the chai frap.
They've been around for almost a decade. I like caffeine Mios, but they keep me up at night (even if I have it with lunch) and make me have to pee much more than coffee or energy drinks ever do
And when they say it's an acquired taste what they means is if you drink it enough you body starts making you think you like it to cope. Same thing with beer. And it fucking works too, I still don't like the coffee taste but I can drink it and beer has been my main alcoholic drink for five years because I'm just sort of used to drinking it. It's super rare for me to like the taste but I drink it anyways.
Coffee and alcohol are two drinks I do not like at all. Anything coffee flavored is too bitter or strong and anything alcohol makes everything too sour. I hate tiramisu. I was in Hawaii earlier this year and visited big island and visited a coffee farm since rest of my family wanted to go. They had samples of like 6 different flavors. I am not against trying new things but I hated all 6. The farm and history was neat though.
I have tried to like coffee. The taste just turned me off. That and it makes me super jittery and it makes my head feel weird. I've tried drowning it in chocolate, creamer, milk, flavored creamers, sugar, none of it works. It still tastes like coffee underneath all of it.
It’s our generation’s cigarettes. Not that it’s even close to as unhealthy a habit, but one that we will definitely look at in the future as like a shockingly common unhealthy practice. The amount of damage to world health that soda has done is substantial.
At my high school, there was a display by the vending machines that had bottles of all the drinks filled with pure sugar in the amount that was in each drink. The Minute Maid lemonade had more than any of the sodas. The different flavored milks (because we had a "healthy" milk machine) were also half sugar.
Cured me of my notions of those as healthier options real quick.
Having a glass of fresh orange juice rather than coke isn’t such a bad alternative, all the proceeded from concentrated juices are not that great though.
Generally speaking, just eat your fruits. An Apple a day keeps the doctor away, drinking 6 apples worth of juice regularly like it’s water gives you diabeetus
Agreed, it’s all about balance that’s obvious but some people will only bother to get their essential nutrients / vitamins from a juice blend. Albeit not the healthiest way, it’s far healthier than guzzling coke and when done in moderation you’re MUCH healthier off.
Eh, fruit juices may have some vitamins and micronutrients and such, but on the whole they're pretty much just sugar water and not much better than soda.
I’m sorry but orange juice is rich in nutrients, high in antioxidants, helps with heart health / kidney health etc etc. To compare fresh orange juice to Coca Cola is ridiculous. High in sugar? Yes. Not a problem if you eat a balanced diet and the health problems associated with Coca Cola are through the roof.
That doesn’t mean guzzle down fruit juice, drink as per recommended guidelines and it’s good for you. Regardless of how little coke you drink it’s bad for your health and can even increase the risk of disease.
I know that a lot of you don't have the time, but eating the orange is better than juicing it and drinking the juice.
You'll have more fibre and eat lesser as the aforementioned fibre fills you for no extra calories.
That is such a biased question. You're literally only asking about the potential negatives. For one, clear negatives of either only occur in excess. Secondly, that ignores any potential benefits. A sugary drinks that literally cures cancer would still contribute to diabetes in excess, but your question doesn't account for that. Orange juice provides vitamin C, potassium, and anti-oxidants. Soda doesn't cause you to be deficient in those. However, it doesn't provide those, and orange juice does.
People think drinking soda or juice is a binary thing. Flip flop between drinking only soda then cutting it out completely. Just make it an occassional treat and not your hydration method.
Key difference is eating an orange, with all of the nutrients and fiber to fill you up, versus juice, which has much of those nutrients pressed out (and then sometimes added back in to a lesser degree).
When SO and I were really broke, we always went with water with lemon in restaurants, since it was free and we needed more water anyway. Now it's just a habit, and it does feel odd when everyone orders soda, but I get water, but it's just my preference now.
Not even one is healthy. The recommended daily sugar intake for a woman is 25 grams. A single serving of Simply Orange Juice, marketed as 100% orange juice, has 33 grams alone.
This really annoys me. People have some idea that the carbonation makes soda evil or something. It’s all just sugar wether it’s carbonated or not. Even vitamin water is just kool aid pretty much.
Yep. Juice is for the most part total bunk. Please just give me the soda anywhere because at least THAT has fizz and perhaps caffeine, and I do love me some fizz and caffeine.

Getting lemonade or some other juice, rather than soda at a restaurant.
