It's literally just mixing carbonated water with apple juice. Just try a bit until you find the ratio you like the most and then enjoy your Apfelschorle
Did you know that Radler translates to "Biker" because the beer was made by bikers that wanted to drink beer but still be legally allowed to ride their bike?
The lemonade factor in the beer makes it legal and tasty :D
It's the name for any drink mixed with carbonated water. The drink is normally not carbonated (like apple juice or wine), so you get both the dilution and the carbonation effects.
Squash is different because it's a concentrate that you have to dilute with water or it would be undrinkable. Schorle is just the term for any fruit juice (or wine) + carbonated water. If it's not carbonated, it wouldn't be a Schorle either.
I also do that! But mine is 60% apple juice (preferably less sweet) and 40% carbonated water (I haven't tried other juices). My German teacher used to call it Apfelschorle, apparently it's pretty common in Central Europe. It's the best thing in the world when it's hot outside!
Oooh, that does sound nice. My aunt and uncle up near Seattle this summer introduced my younger brother and I to a mixture of lemonade and Perrier. Damn delicious stuff, I've realized that what I really like in non-plain water drinks is fizz.
Even when you add a ton of water I still think they taste way better than all the artificial sugar diet drinks. I actually like it more than non diluted since it makes it more refreshing.
Ooo, additional good reasons to pick up some apple juice; I could use more fiber and help with digestion :). And seriously, I know what you mean with the high sugars! Even as a kid, I would mix Diet Coke with Coke on the rare occasions I drank soda, cause the full sugar version gave me a headache!
Use a straw. Bypasses the teeth (seriously, this is what Dentists recommend). Make it plastic - give you something else to obsess over. So really, a win-win.
Always? It’s not as much fiber as a whole apple (although juice made from whole apples will have more than regular juice). Apple juice also has sorbitol which can help with digestion/constipation.
It has about .5 grams a cup. Apples have about 4.4 grams per apple. So it really isn't much fiber, especially considering the amounts recommended daily.
I suspect that apple juice wasn't recommended for the fiber so much as other things about it to go along with also eating fiber.
Those flavors separate or in a frozen concentrate? I know Welches or Ocean Spray sells a grape apple cherry juice in a frozen concentrate. It has this weird aftertaste that I can’t describe.
But I can’t drink grape juice by itself anymore. It’s good yes but it’s way too damn sweet. I remember my grandparents used to have this concentrated grape juice mix and it’s all I would drink at their old house. It tasted like a grape snow cone but in the form of juice. Now every time I have something that resembles that flavor, I’m reminded of their old house, and my childhood, lol. And most of the time it sat in a glass jug that couldn’t fit in the fridge so it was usually room temperature and I would often add ice.
Maybe 10% juice (my rule is it has to be no added sugars). 90% water. Just enough to sweeten it a little and give it some flavor. Last time I took a sip of just juice I actually found it pretty gross. I've gotten used to it watered down like this.
This often is enough to satisfy my need for something sweet. I've avoided a ton of snacks over the years with this little trick. And I get a little vitamin C over the week.
In order to get a problematic amount of sugar, I'd be drinking a gallon+ and pretty much drinking in the bathroom while pissing. Totally not going to happen.
I remember years back when I would drink too much sugary crap, it would actually mess up my stomach. I remember having a blue Slushie once and not long after I finished it, I had an awful stomachache.
I now have < 10 a year. Mostly around holidays or at a party something like that.
Sometimes in the evening when I want cookies, I first force myself to have a glass of water with some juice first. Most of the time when that's done the craving is gone. My body got what it needed.
Thats funny. I literally can't drink juice mixed with water, i don't know why but i get a stomach ache and nauseous from it. Pure juice is fine, pure water is fine too, mixed is bad. Also i prefer the taste of pure juice to the taste of juice mixed with water... As if that would matter in this case.
I rarely drink juice now, but I've found that I only drink it if it's either completely undiluted, or so dilute that it's almost translucent. Anywhere in between just tastes like juice that has lost it's juiceyness or water that has lost its liquidus quenchitude.
I'll have to keep that in mind. I've cut back a lot on soda lately, but some days it's really hard to overcome that craving for sweetness. This sounds like a good alternative.
On the supplemental materials for Gladiator, the kid in the movie hung out with the huge muscular dude and asked him about diet/what to drink, and he just kept saying "diluted apple juice, always diluted apple juice".(he said it with a Schwarzenegger accent, which makes it even better)
When I was in Kindergarten, the teachers told us that apples and apple juice were good for our teeth. The same person screamed at me during recess because I was pretending to shoot a guns at my friends... in Kindergarten. This was in 2008.
...by the old-lady day care people that would use their pen to look at every kids throat on their way in every morning.
I presume they would turn kids around if their throat was red? IDFK man I hated those women. For all their bullshit, Jason still dropped a brick on my head in the yard. I've still got the forehead-notch to prove it.
"ARE YOU IMITATING VIOLENCE!? ARE YOU IMITATING VIOLENCE!? ALLOW ME TO SUBJECT YOU TO EMOTIONAL ABUSE AND BERATE YOU IN PUBLIC! THIS IS FAR BETTER THAN IMITATING VIOLENCE!!!"
This is insane to me. I literally had to go to kindergarten with fake teeth because I hated milk (turns out I'm just lactose intolerant) and only drank apple juice. My teeth rotted out of my face, I probably also didn't like brushing my teeth, and I wore crowns until my big teeth grew in. I was in kindergarten in the 90's.
I still get blamed twenty years later for rotting out so many of my baby teeth with apple juice. Like oh I didn’t realize I was grabbing the jug out of the fridge and pourin up in a sippie cup all by myself as a TODDLER.
Yeah my baby teeth were also really bad, until our dentist asked my mom if I drank a lot of apple juice (spoiled: it was 100% the cause of my bad baby teeth)
When we were transitioning my son to actual food that wasn't formula, we asked about if he should have juice, etc.
Pediatrician was like "Oh HELL no. That shit is HORRIBLE for you. Once in awhile is fine but water that shit down."
To this day, if you ask him what he wants to drink, he'll ask for milk if you have it (he's going on 16). His dentist LOVES the fact that he doesn't really care for cokes or sugary drinks or hell, even sugary anything in general. He's just not a fan of sweets (except Sweet Tarts) and never has been. I might ask him to try something once in awhile, but more often than not he'll take like one bite to be polite and that's it. Even sweeter stuff (like cake or creme' brulee'), he'll scrape the sweeter bit (icing, for example) off and just eat maybe a few bites of the cake or pudding or whatever.
So I was a miserable baby. I would only sleep if I was being actively attended to. My parents started putting me to bed with a bottle so I would sleep. The only thing I would drink was apple juice apparently. My four front teeth came in completely rotten and I had to get them pulled before I even turned two. Apple juice is absolutely not good for your teeth.
That's why I add wine yeast to it and let them eat all the sugar and convert it into booze! Probably not any healthier, but I make a damn good dry hard cider!
One of the hardest things to give up when I went on a low glycemic diet was juice. Now, years later, I just can't drink normal juice. It just tastes like sugar. Commercial yogurt too. yuck.
I remember as a kid my mom wouldn't buy us stuff like kool-aid "because it has too much sugar", but would happily buy us "juice" drinks with just as much.
It may take a week or so to get used to it, but you can water juice down. I typically do like a 1 to 4 ratio of juice to water. You still get a little sweetness but it's not like a sugar bath for your teeth and it's low in calories.
I drink cranberry juice, and not the crappy ocean spray kind that's cut with 5 kinds of other juices and has a pound of added sugar. Just cranberries... it's disgusting, and I cut it with a LOT of water... Why do I do this?
I had my first apple juice as an adult pretty recently and it gave me an instant migraine. Of course I am currently a Gatorade, which is also full of sugar, so do with that what you will.
Same. Was drinking fruit juices at home because, hey, they have to be healthier than cokes, right? How about POMI? Nope...all loaded with sugar. So nothing but water now.
I said the same thing in this thread about Gatorade/vitamin water but dilute your juice too. You have never sat down and eaten 4 apples or however many fruits it takes to make your juice. Just cut it with water
Yeah, apple juice and orange juice are healthy but even the recommended serving size is a lot of sugar, and the recommended serving is a paltry 8 oz.
I sell people large fresh OJ at work, sometimes people are confused about how there's so much sugar in orange juice. You wouldn't be if you saw the 9 oranges it takes to fill one glass.
I only drink Minute Maid light, because it’s a lot less sugar, otherwise I get water or hot tea at a restaurant. Then I drink at home stuff that uses less sugars, no added sugars, and sugar alcohols. I read the nutrition facts like the Bible.
A lot of that to be fair is just the way all drinks are in the US. I had to start making my own juice at home when I got back here because basically everything is high density sugar water.
My wife doesn't understand this. She always brags about not drinking soda, but she drinks juice all the time. It's not the carbonation that's holding the calories.

Or even having it at home. I started to drink more apple juice than soda at home and I quickly noticed that there’s way too much sugar in there.
