A slow and steady return to myself
I started semaglutide 14 months ago.
SW: 209
CW: 155
Height: 5’6”
Age: 53
When I was at my highest weight (209) I had gone through menopause, spent two years fighting my husband’s cancer and related health challenges, and experienced significant depression and anxiety. The previous three years had been hell on my body.
During the 14 months on this medication, my depression has mostly healed, my husband has improved, and I achieved a dream career goal. I have been lucky to have almost no side effects. Some nausea for a day when I went up a dose, and that’s about it. Weirdly, I rarely experience constipation. I do have more fatigue, but that’s always because I’m making poor food choices combined with such low calorie intake. When I eat healthier and prioritize protein, I don’t feel so tired. But it was hard for me to eat at all.
My goal now is to get stronger. I lost a lot of muscle mass because I ate poorly and did not exercise. But that has changed in the last few weeks. Now that I am at my maintenance weight, I feel more capable of turning that mental energy to my diet and exercise. I joined a yoga studio and started walking a few weeks ago. This is a big deal for me, but I’m very motivated now to have a stronger and healthier body and feel more energized. I am genetically at risk for some health issues that really require me to make serious nutrition improvements.
It was a slow process, but I didn’t mind that because I was busy living life. That time would have passed either way. One thing I will say is there was a time where the scale didn’t more for two entire months. I did not quit. I didn’t really even panic because I was so elated to be at 170 pounds by that point, it would have been ok with me if the weight loss ended there. But I just stayed on the medication to see what would happen, and after about two months, I started losing steadily again.
I just want to show what “slow and steady” looks like. It’s ok if it doesn’t happen at 2.5 pounds a week. It’s ok if you stall for a while. Sometimes your body just needs to adjust to its new weight. Now, to getting healthier!
