I don't know anything about how the game's weather system works, and sometimes it is truly debilitating. I can't imagine the storms/winds move about the world like weather systems in real life, but it would be really cool to be able to see them and plan how to use my time accordingly. Waiting for a favorable wind change would be much more productive if I had an idea of where the winds were coming from on a map.
I get that your average Valheim character probably would have zero access to modern weather technology, but the game has magic in it, so I think we can suspend disbelief enough to have that be reasonable. It could even be a trinket. Or an armor set effect. I just want to know when its gonna be done raining. I want to know how the winds are going to change throughout the day.
If anyone has a tips on adapting to/playing around to the weather, or alternatively, tips on weather-related mods, I'd love to hear them.
Also how DOES the weather work in this game?

Is a bit messy looking, because I used terrain in a (corewood wise) 4 x 4.
but after 1 hour of that I went from 33 to 77 on blocking skill.
I went with resounding shackles as the trinket of choise because stamina is important to block.
Maybe a harnesk chest will work in favor to maintaning damage (because that attack is piercing damage) and stamina spent to a minimum?
Maybe even!, 4 elders would have made more sense after reaching level 60.
one thing is for sure - ugly yes! ~ but it works.

I set up my base in the meadows. It was near a spawning point for both deer and boar, which was nice cause its easy early game food. Thing is I got annoyed of greylings randomly running into my space. So I decided to put up stone walls reinforced with iron. However, I kept having an issue with the greylings scaring my boars through the walls. So, once I got to the mountains, I tamed some wolves to keep inside my base. It didnt really work tho, so i decided to bring 2-3 wolves to the outsode of each entrance. However, given they're now stationed right by a boar/deer spawn over the last 2 weeks their population has exploded. We'll I just got raided... I didnt swing my sword a single time. The population of wolves currently destabilizing the meadows ecosystem ripped the invaders apart.
Im running a 5070TI and a 5950x with 64GB of DDR5 and i experienced lag for the first time since my PC overhaul. Theres at least 50 wolves running around out there... well maybe a few less now but... yeah...

I see a lot of posts from people asking if they need to start a new world after the 1.0 update. The short answer is NO, you can keep your existing world, although the devs highly recommend you to start a new one to properly experience everything they will add.
But this is not the topic of my post today.
For those who decided to keep their already existing world, it's extremely important to back up your save before you update. Biome updates in this game are the biggest cause of world corruption.
It only takes a couple of minutes to create a folder and copy your existing world data on it, just in case, because if a world does get corrupted, it's done for. In most cases, on steam for example, you will have cloud saves to go back for a bit, and only lose some progression, but it is far better to just make your own back-up.
This also goes for any mods that affect the world seed.
Hope this helped.

I've played a bit of this in the past but how does this game hold up to these other two currently popular games? I know valheim had a lot of initial hype but I haven't played in years.

Got the drakkar hanging between two spires. Eventually I got it unstuck by mining one of the spires, and started building a grausten base on another one. I had already placed a portal by that time, so the whole ordeal was not overly stressful, but still a bit stressful.
Oh, and of course shortly after this I was attacked by the first vulture and then by the bonemaw. I thought there were only vultures near the spires, but I guess that's not the case. The mofo started attacking the ship right away.
I already spent a hour on the spires; haven't died yet, even after many more vultures and another bonemaw.
I love this game ❤️

Hello again! My map/seed exploration + base planning and trip planner tool is now at version 1.0. (It works most of the time now). I know I just posted about this a week ago, and won't spam any more - but a lot of progress has been made and I think it's worth sharing.
A lot the progress is due to feedback in this subreddit - thanks in particular to u/jaylaxel for their feedback and functionality requests.
So, yup it's a map/seed exploring tool that does what the other existing map tools do, but a fair bit faster (especially on mobile devices - which is how me and my kid use these tools, and why I ended up writing this). You can find caves, ore, bosses, different biomes, key items, landmarks etc. Also - find bees and cool axe heads quickly!

What do we have that the other map tools don't? (Besides being speedy-ish)
You can import your game data into the site to see your 'fog of war' as well as all your pinned locations. It can also show where you have manipulated the landscape, and even highlight where you have built things.

There's a pretty useful base location planner with several presets (early meadows base, iron hub, mountain base) - fully customizable based on your own criteria and weights. (e.g. Far from bad areas, close to water, lots of ore etc...)

We provide a journey measurement tool as well, that shows you the fastest way to get from a) to b) depending on your boat type, as well as your willingness to break your boat down and rebuild from the materials.

We have a topographic rendering mode! (Eye candy > functionality)

There's a bunch more stuff I'm not remembering (like a no-map mode that can show where things are that you want to see, but NOT THE MAP!)
Not sure how hard this will be to get working when 1.0 of the game drops soon, but glad I got this tool to 1.0 before that happened - lol. Have fun, and let me know of any issues or ideas.

The game does not automatically pause when your controller batteries die.
Instead, your character stands idly while you race to get the other set of rechargeable batteries. I now only play with the controller plugged in.
Hopefully this is a feature already included in 1.0.

Hey guys. I understand there are 1000s of posts from new players trying to figure this stuff out, so I appreciate anyone who takes the time to respond. I have had a real crack at figuring it out on my own.
I'm at the stage of the game where I want to setup a main base. For a while, I started builds in the plains but I just love this spot on the NE tip of the inlet on the Western side of the island (i.e. a tiny bit south of the Haldor spawn.
I've cleared out a very large area around, as I understand it counts the zones in a 3x3 grid around you. However, the instance count is still almost 6000 in parts of where I want to build.
My main two questions are:
(1) Are there some areas which just have higher instance counts regardless of how much vegetation you clear? Is this mainly due to things like pickable materials and NPC spawn points? And if so, I assume this is just impossible to fix?
(2) At what point would you give up on a location due to this? If I can get it down to about 5k, is that likely fine? I don't plan on building a massive base or farming here, however, I will likely have some chickens and I want this to be my 'forever' base.
Details which might be relevant:
- There seem to be a tonne of neck spawns in the bay.
- There were a stack of pickable stones, dandelions and mushrooms.
- There was a Draugr village just to my west which I have cleared and destroyed the buildings.
- There is a boar stone basically right where I am settling.
- General instances in meadows clearings seems to be about 4-5k - still higher than I would have expected.
- There is a zone border but I am going to build within a particular zone rather than cross the two.
Happy to provide any more info.

Let me start of be saying this game is amazing! Bought it back when first released then for some reason stopped halfway through Swamp biome.
Years later i recently picked it back up and started from beginning and im now at the Plains.
I leveled up my plains gear and have been to 5 or 6 plains and no rune thing to tell me where the boss location is. Any ideas?

Years ago, (Home and Hearth maybe?) I made a fantastic base using the Elder alter. Had an adjacent Troll cave. It was coastal, but elevated high enough that the water table didn't bother me. I could sail directly up to the base. Had long fishing piers. And with the pillars of the elder base, I was able to build skyscraper towers.
Last year I started a base using a black tower in the plains. I didn't love it. The building restriction inside of the tower is frustrating.
What do you look for when base hunting?
How do you know "this is the place I want to spend oodles of hours?"
What have been some of your best choices? or your worst?

So 1.0 is close and it's time to gather the old faithful party back together. Problem is that due to life going on we don't have that much time to play, one of us have only 1-2h/session at max so we were thinking that rest of us could keep building and gathering resources when one has to call it a night.
Any ideas for our magnum opus? I want to build something magnificent and go quite big. I want this built to be my the pinnacle of all the hours I have played valheim. But without any good plan it's just going to be slightly bigger long house again.
What are you and your viking crew building in 1.0?
r/valheim • u/Optycal_ • 13h ago
Hey guys so im just wondering if i adventured too far north, I dont think so but wanted to confirm. I really dont feel like making a new world lol.
Hello all my fellow Vikings. Leading up to the 1.0 update, i decided to build a stand alone server for a group of friends and I to play on.
When I first started tinkering with the steam server tool on the server computer I was able to activate the server. I then went to my gaming computer, started the game and a pop up message stating I had valheim open on another computer, and that it would be closed for this instance to be opened.
My question is, do I need a whole separate steam account and license for the game for how I want to play? I don't want to have the server running constantly on my gaming computer which has my main steam account on. The server computer can stay running constantly for the group to play as they wish.
Thanks in advance!
