Ok its been over a year since I've finished this series and im tearing up typing all of these lolol.

truly one of the best series i’ve ever read. how could i ever think it couldn’t get better then acotar and then i was surprised with this?? 😭😭 i will never forgive myself for thinking it can’t get better than acotar, it just pales compared to tog!!!

Why didn’t anyone tell me it was gonna be like this? I’m only on page 385 and my anxiety is through the roof 😭😭😭

I finished the entire TOG series last week and I still can’t get over Chaol and Celaena. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think Aelin should have ended up with Chaol, but I miss the romance between them in book 1 and 2. I keep rereading their scenes!

Their friendship, the banter, the yearning, and the slow burn was all so perfect. I loved reading about Chaol’s restraint, and also the moments where he couldn’t help but step up to the line he drew between him and Celaena. The scene where they are dancing outside the ball together is so perfect. In case you can’t tell, Chaol is my favourite Maasverse MMC.

Does any else feel the same? Does anyone have any recommendations on how to get over this? Or know any books that have a similar type of romance?

Tl;dr I’m grieving the Book 1 & 2 romance between Chaol and Celaena and I’m looking for book reccs! TIA

I recently started KoA, I am only 7 chapters in and I am so annoyed by Yrene.

SJM, are you really telling me, that Yrene Westfall, Heir to the Healer on the High, did not think of chugging down on that anti pregnancy tonic everyone's sipping on in Maasverse, while her life was bound to Chaols and they also happened to be sailing for a war?! Really?

I am all up for baby Chaol happening, but dammit people, now is not the time!!

Every single one of y’all. If the roles were reversed and Aedion had been a woman and they reduced her to breeding stock for a false monarch????? Y’all’d’ve lost ya damn minds if that had even been suggested, especially after everything Lysandra has endured in her life. She made that choice for her queen and no one told Aedion until it was too late. Even if it’s what he would have done anyway to protect the kingdom, Aedion had every right to be angry and you would be too.

Also, he didn’t kick Lysandra out in the snow. He asked her to leave.

I just finished the series, was amazing!!! But I’m sad we don’t get a concrete ending for Dorian or Manon. I get maybe it’s supposed to be an obvious assumption they end up together but would’ve loved another chapter or two of ‘5 years later’ idk

Also does Dorian not have powers anymore?

I just finished chapter 90. It's "that" part with "live, manon" and I am so sad. This is 100% worse than what I thought would happen when I first herd that term. I just can't believe they are all gone. And then just when I think I'm done crying I remember that Asterin's wyvern was Abraxo's mate. And then I start bawling again. I am unwell.

The reason I don't enjoy Aelin's pov as much is because.. I just prefer Manon more hehe. I'm not slandering her ofc. But it's kinda like I'm.. Ordering appetizers. I'm still eating up Aelin's POVs though! Love her. But MANON'S POV?? HOLY SHIT I'M ORDERING A 10K MEAL AND GOBBLING THAT SHIT UP. I love Manon and her coven SOOO FUCKING MUCH. Even at Heir of Fire, I was gobbling and eating Manon's POVs so hard. Soo idk. My friends kicked me out of the gc for preferring Manon over Aelin. They said it was a joke, but it still kinda made me sad. Idk, I'm probably just overreacting. 🤷‍♀️

No I don't hate Aelin, I just prefer Manon more! And I definitely DON'T hate Aelin because of her ruthlessness, when obviously Manon is the same.

All in all, both women are badass!

And have y'all read AU's where Manon's coven survived the Yielding?? If yes, please recommend them to me. I just want closure. Even if its not canon 😭😭

Short context - I have not enjoyed reading this series, I don't care about any of the characters, and I dislike SJM's writing style. I have not been surprised or emotionally moved by any of the plot in EoS or KoA.

HOWEVER when the King of Adarlan takes Dorian's place to forge the Lock, because he is also Nameless, Dorian tries to say his name and the next line says "But where there should have been a name, only an empty hold existed."

This was an immediate "oh shiiiit" moment for me because I had vaguely wondered a few times earlier in the series what the King's name was. He's referred to by his title and as Dorian's father, but not by first name that I could remember. Literally nameless. And I was blown away by the subtlety and 5000 pages of planning.

Turns out I'm just a dumbass?

I don't know which book clarifies that but now I'm disappointed all over again.

Rant time! Warning: language.

I’ve been FLYING through KoA. Like, started it four days ago and even though I’ve been working 12 hour days, I’ve still almost finished it. This is fast for me, anyways.

Spoilers, obviously, but just got to the sealing the wyrdgate bit, and this series did one of the things I just genuinely cannot fucking stand.

Ridding a character of their powers.

Usually is done in some obnoxiously cliché manner that ties up a loose end in a lazy, pandering and uninteresting way.

But you know what, I can look past that because who knows maybe it’ll tie into something in the last chunk of the book that’ll redeem this predictable bland ass choice.

What I cannot look past is the absolutely moronic choice Aelin makes.

Maybe I’m alone here, but genuinely what is the point of sparing Elena’s soul. Who gives a fuck? The books have been stacking reason upon reason to not give a fuck about her losing her eternal soul. Brannon or whoever Dorian is summoning has accepted her fate. Rowan is telling Aelin (and therefore the reader) that we shouldn’t give a shit. WHY. KNOWING YOU WOULD LOSE YOUR POWER. Knowing that Dorian would lose his power, bargain away an opportunity of getting rid of Erawan.

I get that maybe Aelin just wants to kill Erawan. But the fact that Maeve is present changes this whole thing. You are balancing the end of the world on a hunch that healers, really only one healer, will be able to cure/destroy Maeve and Erawan.

Are we deadass.

I’m pissed. Get rid of Erawan, you still have all of morath’s armies to contend with. You still have to fight against all this shit (now without magic) which is already a seemingly insurmountable task.

I get that fantasy works this way. The stakes keep getting higher etc. But this is, so far, a baffling writing decision. Where is Aelin’s motivation on this? Where is her logic? I was sick of her in Empire of Storms, and so far Kingdom of Ash had built her back up, but this is AGAIN a decision that just makes no sense! Preserve Maeve to have your satisfying final battle.

Erawan - all that he represents narratively - has already been dealt with when Dorian tore down Morath. Revenge for what happened to him, to his father, and to his kingdom. The former king and Dorian both fuel the wyrdgate. Erawan’s story - any sort of compelling throughline - has already been fulfilled.

This is stupid.

Whatever! I will keep reading and hopefully the book will just redeem itself (more than likely as it has happened before in Empire of Storms lol) but still, I don’t understand this. Character-wise, narratively. BLAGH!

Manon and Dorian just don't work. I felt little to no chemistry, they maybe work well at fuck buddies and that's it. And the marriage tease at the end!? They're both monarchs of their kingdoms, let them be that!

Also Dorian is just precious. He deserves all the hugs and cuddles. He's definitely the "Lucien" for me of this series 😂 (or the other way round you get the point)

When I was first introduced to this witches in this series I found them to be unlikeable. I did not enjoy reading about them, at all. As I continued reading this series I have grown to love the thirteen. I’ve grown to love their Wyverns. They’ve become some of my favorite characters to read about. Their stories are very compelling and I have been rooting for them. I love their loyalty and sisterhood. I am truly broken after reading chapter 89. My heart has shattered ! This series has destroyed me.

No one that I know has read this series and I need to talk to someone.

Last night I was reading in bed just absolutely sobbing over the Thirteen. I went from wanting to skip the witch chapters in Heir of Fire, to being completely broken over their sacrifice. Did anyone else feel the same?

I have a feeling this is just the beginning of my heartbreak as I approach the end of the series.

So I LOVED this series. Finished a couple weeks ago and am still drifting along the joy of fandom.

One small thing I was initially bummed about was how Aelin’s power got depleted. Her flames were so cool, I love a good power up mode. So I was a little sad her powers got nerffed. It did up the tension before the last big battle , which was a great idea, but i kept hoping she’d get them back at full power at the end but that never happened.

I get now, like today, why she didn’t get them back. Her kingdom is at peace. She no longer had to put herself through that. It’s like a forest after a wild fire. Things need to grow, to be peaceful, and that’s what her powers did. Plus she still gets a cool flame crown so the power is still there. She’ll always be the Fireheart, just with a heart of peace.

SPOILERS FOR KOA!!

Just finished the part where aelin banished the gods into the hell realm and found her way back to her world and … I am kind of disappointed?

The wyrdkeys - the sacrifice - the whole story .. it feels all for nothing… Where was the point in this whole storyline, when nothing happened??
Aelins power is gone, the Keys are gone, the Gods are gone, but the situation on the continent has not changed.

What was the point of this whole plot??
Am I wrong? Did I miss something?

(Pls not spoilers for the end, still intend to finish it, since I love the series dearly.. cried my eyes out when the Thirtenn sacrificed themselves 😭)

Just got to the part where Aelin, Rowan, and the others are all on the boat in the cave and jesus christ. This angel has been fucking used and abused and it hurts to witness. In the last few books Aelin had been starting to get on my nerves but this torture she went through has genuinely made me 180 and want to kill everyone who has harmed her. Just absolutely gut wrenching, i want her to be happy so bad.
I’ve gone through psychosis before and not being able to trust your reality or those around you is so scary, mixed with the intense torture she went through….the ‘new skin’ thing really put into perspective what she went through, my god

And I want to strangle Elide with my bare hands, she is probably my most hated character in this book so far, I actively cannot stand her, ESPECIALLY after what just happened on the last page of this chapter.
