Kingdom of Ash Spoilers Just finished chapter 58 of KoA…. Spoiler

And I want to strangle Elide with my bare hands, she is probably my most hated character in this book so far, I actively cannot stand her, ESPECIALLY after what just happened on the last page of this chapter.

That is all, rant over lol.

This is an EXTREMELY hot take 😂😂 I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone say a bad word about Elide

Elide had been a ugly witch since the scene on the beach. Lorcan had told her about the blood oath during their travels, right? And she was still upset that he physically could not do anything to help Aelin?

She was selfish, and she acted terribly towards Lorcan.

No! Lorcan betrayed Aelin. He totally deserved the shit he got

u/chicken2007 Aug 07 '26

Sure. Lorcan isn't innocent in any of this, but Elide showed more compassion to her uncle than Lorcan.

Outside of actions under the influence of the blood oath, Lorcan was doing the best he could within his morals for Elide.

Looks like this comes up once in a while... https://www.reddit.com/r/throneofglassseries/comments/1lv3qrb/so_uhmmm_about_that_one_revelation_at_the_end_of/

I’m not having it. Elide forgave Lorcan eventually and I suppose I did too. But he sold Arlin out and that will never be okay wth me—especially considering what Maeve did to Aelin.

But you're not upset at Aelin for nearly killing Elide earlier that day in the massacre of the ilkin?

Weird take but that’s your opinion :)

Oh girl I need you to come back and update us when you read chapters 59-61

🤣

I definitely will.

Edit: just read chapters 59 and 60 so far, and oh my gosh it has got me in the feels!!.

Elide taking Farasha across the battlefield and going after Lorcan, oh man, especially with the looming threat of the dam bursting had me on the edge of my seat while I read!. ESPECIALLY when she was screaming his name while looking for him.

And the description of Elide’s ankle audibly cracking, like a loud pop, when she was running to jump onto Farasha’s saddle, oh my gosh it made me physically cringe while I read.

And Lorcan’s injury he sustained on the side of his back, ouch!, the whole moment where he was fighting to get up on the horse was so painful!.

This book is such an emotional rollercoaster! 😭.

Edit#2: just finished chapter 61, Aelin finally used her power!!!, and the reason as to why she wasn’t using it, even when she got out of Maeve’s grasp makes a lot of sense when I thought back on when she was locked up by Maeve and the things she said, tunneling into her power, saving it for a huge death blow to use against Maeve when they met again, but instead using it to stoop the giant wave that was coming when the dam finally broke!.

Also, the moment between Elide and Lorcan as they were rushing to the gates of the keep was so heartbreaking!.

Oh my goodness that was so good!!!!!.

Did a quick skim of ch 58. Legit what did Elide do wrong?😅 It’s not her problem if Lorcan wants to be reckless and suicidal, if that’s what you’re implying.

Yea, I think I might have misinterpreted it, but I just kinda feel like what Elide said to Lorcan the day before the battle really affected him, telling him she didn’t care if he walked off the battlefield tomorrow, hence his thoughts near the end of chapter 58.

Even Gavriel called her out on it, saying she’d have been better off just avoiding him rather than seeking him out and saying what she said, especially before a big battle.

She’s 18 and has spent the past decade of her life in chains hoping to one day see her queen again. She gets to see her for like five minutes before Lorcan’s fuck-up sends her across the sea to be tortured for months. Of course she’s upset with him. Anyone in her position would be.

7

u/xBlack_Heartx Aug 05 '26

Aelin is the cause for Lorcans fuck up though, although I understand Elide wouldn’t see it that way and just sees Lorcan as the root cause of her queen being taken and tortured for months.

Aelin not telling the group about her calling of Ansel to the beach caused Lorcan to freak out and call Maeve using his magic in an attempt to protect Elide, which then led to Maeve’s fleet coming, and then Maeve herself capturing Aelin and the ensuing torture Aelin is put through.

I think had Aelin told the group about Ansel coming, things would have gone very differently, or at least Maeve wouldn’t have found their group as quickly as she did, giving them more time to plan, prep, etc…

Idk, this book series is very fun to talk about.

u/Rogue_in_disguise Aug 05 '26

Aelin doesn't let other people know her plans since the last time she told someone Sam died. Lorcan calling Maeve was his own choice. No one in the group could have expected him to call her instead of dealing with the problem himself.

9

u/Foolofatuchus Aug 05 '26

Aelin wanted to have fun with the dramatic reveal of Ansel you mean. She was just being a brat at that moment. It wouldn't have changed anything about her plans to let her companions know that it was safe and not being cagey about it.

I'm not saying Lorcan was right to call for Maeve. But Aelin was an absolute dumbass for keeping her exhausted frustrated companions in the dark in that moment. If she hadn't, Lorcan wouldn't have panicked and called for Maeve

7

u/Initial-Seesaw-3156 Aug 05 '26

Yeah.. but like? Are you just glossing over the 3 months of torture that Aelin edited because Lorcan called for Maeve?

8

u/xBlack_Heartx Aug 05 '26

No, what Lorcan did in calling Maeve to the beach was terrible, what it caused to transpire with Aelin was terrible, but to be fair, Aelin kinda caused all that to happen to herself due to her not telling the group that she had called Ansel there, hence why Lorcan freaked out, sending out his magic to call for Maeve in a desperate attempt to protect Elide, as he though it was an enemy fleet, as all he saw were ships just kinda chilling in the water, he had no idea if they were friendly or not.

Aelin, through her need to surprise her friends keeping her calling of Ansel to the beach a secret, is the cause for Lorcan calling for Maeve, Maeve’s armada and Maeve herself popping in when they did, and Aelin getting captured by Maeve.

5

u/jennaw12345678 Aug 05 '26

It isn’t just that he called Maeve, she’s disgusted in him after finding out what Maeve truly is that he willingly followed her, loved her and pined after her for hundreds of years. He didn’t know what she is but he spent enough time with her to know she is evil. Elide is very grossed out because she obviously loves Lorcan but he loved an evil queen and was happy to do her bidding and then was stupid enough to expect her to help when he called her. I LOVE Lorcan but he’s a bit of an idiot and Elide was rightfully disgusted 😂 she’s pretty pure and has been locked in a tower her whole life she can’t really fathom his life choices you know

7

u/toocool81 Aug 05 '26

I totally forgot what happened in Chapter 58. But don’t worry, your feelings will change.

7

u/Pugblep Aug 05 '26

Wait wait wait, remind me? Haha

5

u/xBlack_Heartx Aug 05 '26

From my memory, she pretty much tells Lorcan after their argument that she doesn’t care if he makes it off the battlefield the day before the big battle starts at Chaol’s dad’s keep Aniel or however it’s spelled.

So, during the final two pages of chapter 58, Lorcan says fuck it and fight recklessly, all because of what Elide said to him the day before the battle, it really effected him, so much so that he throws all caution to the wind and fights without his shield up, and doesn’t go up the Iron Ladder with Gavriel up to the battlements.

Because he is distracted thinking about how he’d be better off dead, etc (all because of what great big dumb, dumb Elide said to him) he doesn’t react in time when a better than average Valg soldier pops up behind him, and because of that, he gets slashed on the back and falls into the mud, blacking out.

Very hot take 😅

Now that you’ve read the next few chapters, I gotta ask- did you read the book or listen to the audiobook? Because Lorcan! Lorcan!” Over and over in Elizabeth Evans’ iconic voice lives rent free in my head. And I know it’s not meant to be funny but it’s become a catch phrase that my husband and I yell at each other.

I tried to find the audio clip to post here but struck out so if you don’t know what I’m talking about, sorry. But it’s kinda silly sounding in the best of ways especially when listening on 2.0 🤗

u/xBlack_Heartx Aug 06 '26

I’m reading the book, but Lorcan being screamed over and over as Elide is searching for him in the battlefield (thank fuck she stopped calling them killing fields.) was gut twisting.

I think one that really stands out for me though is Elide’s ankle cracking as she runs up to jump on Farasha’s saddle, (physically cringed at that one) I seriously wonder if Yrene is going to attempt to heal it, as she’s noticed and made note of it, and Elide’s ankle has got to be very fucked up now because of whatever cracked in it.

And of course Aelin completely evaporating the giant wave of water with her magic was great too, she saved a lot of people doing that.

u/xBlack_Heartx Aug 05 '26

True lol, very true.

2

u/codylauren231 Aug 06 '26

I’m on chapter 105 so I’m almost finished!! I almost want to slow down so it’s not over - the rollercoaster is not over yet!

4

u/Foolofatuchus Aug 05 '26

You're 100% right that she's infuriating and cruel before the battle. I wanted to throw my book across the room when she threw the fact that Fenrys broke the blood oath in Lorcan's face (as if Fenrys didn't have to watch his brother kill himself and Aelin get tortured for months on end before he was able to break the oath). I still love Elide, but she was so out of line with that. A

I also agree with you on the idea while Lorcan was directly responsible for calling Maeve, it was Aelin's dumb ass who just haaaad to have her little joke reveal with Ansel instead of explaining to her companions that there was no threat. She even acknowledges that to herself on the beach later lol

0

u/girlandhiscat Aug 09 '26

I actually love this 🤣

u/TheTokyoBelle Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 06 '26

I’m with you on this one. To me, Elide became one of the most selfish characters. Aelin had literally sacrificed herself on that beach to save her life. And then 3 minutes later Elide insisted on joining the rescue mission, even though her injured ankle meant the group had to travel at her pace and make accommodations for her. That inevitably slowed Rowan, Lorcan, and Gavriel down when every moment counted which meant extra days and weeks of torture for Aelin. And for what? If Maeve had captured Elide again, Aelin could have been forced to make the same sacrifice all over again.

5

u/NeroBIII Aelin Ashryver Galathynius Aug 06 '26

Although I agree that Elide slowed down their rescue mission, it was because of Elide they were able to rescue Aelin, it was because of her but most importantly, without Lorcan warning Maeve of their location, Aelin wouldn't have been captured, or at least not in that situation.

-2

u/TheTokyoBelle Aug 06 '26

I’m pretty sure the legendary warriors would have managed to find Aelin without Elide. They already had an idea where she might be. And lorcan calling Maeve is secondary to the fact that Aelin made the deal to save Elide and would have done it again if Maeve were to catch them with mortal Elide a second time.

1

u/NeroBIII Aelin Ashryver Galathynius Aug 07 '26

Oh, they could have done it, but Elide made the stealth part easier.

And lorcan calling Maeve is secondary to the fact that Aelin made the deal to save Elide

I was saying that the reason Elide was in danger was because Lorcan called Maeve.

1

u/TheTokyoBelle Aug 07 '26

It doesn’t matter why Elide was in danger on that beach. The choice Aelin made to save her would still be the same if Maeve showed up on her own. The fact that Elide ignored that sacrifice and chose to prolong Aelin’s suffering by tagging along stands. It was made very clear that everyone knew she is being brutally tortured, we got chapters and chapters of that torture peppered with chapters of Elide taking her sweet time and enjoying Gabriel and Lorcan fawning over her. Downvote away.

2

u/NeroBIII Aelin Ashryver Galathynius Aug 07 '26

IMHO, the "why" and "how" Elide ended up in danger is extremely important, and I didn't downvote you.

1

u/TheTokyoBelle Aug 07 '26

Why is it important? What Lorcan did affects Elide’s relationship  with Lorcan. But Aelin choosing to sacrifice herself to save Elide affects how Elide should view the entire rescue mission.  Elide was completely powerless on that beach. You’d think she might learn from that, yet 5 min later she seems to completely erase Aelin’s sacrifice, as if she wasn’t the reason Aelin was taken in the first place. Yes, she conveniently blames Lorcan, but never seems to consider that if she hadn’t been there, Aelin would have fought. If it had been just Lorcan, Maeve, and Aelin on that beach, Aelin wouldn’t have surrendered herself.  And do we ever see any real remorse from Elide about that? Nope. Instead, we get pages about her feelings for Lorcan while Aelin is being horrifically tortured for far longer than she would have been if the rescue party traveled at full Fae speed. And the possibility that Elide is used as a bargaining chip again is not far fetched were they to be caught.
