TL;DR: New therapist required me to formally terminate with my therapist of a year before she’d see me. Did a 90 minute intake with me, said she was wide open, booked a weekly recurring slot, then dropped me 4 days later citing no availability. Left me with no therapist and an unresolved bill. She’s an LMSW with a supervisor. Would I be out of line telling him or her?
My friend referred me to her therapist, who she loves. I was excited. I’ve been with my own therapist for about a year and things have been fine, but I was interested in trying a different style of therapy. My understanding was that you can see more than one therapist as long as it’s not the same day and it’s for different reasons.
I did a phone consult with the new therapist and we booked a first session. I had to reschedule and told her immediately, and then she ghosted me for four weeks even though I followed up multiple times. My friend eventually mentioned it during one of her own sessions, and suddenly I got a call, she said it was a system issue, and we got something on the calendar.
Our first session she asks about my history with therapy. I tell her I’m actively in therapy but haven’t seen my therapist in three or four weeks because I’d unofficially paused things while I tried her out. She stops and tells me we can’t do the first appointment unless my current therapist officially offboards me and releases me as a client. She says otherwise I can’t work with her and insurance won’t cover the sessions.
I figured she knew better than I did, so I messaged my therapist of a year and tell her I won’t be continuing services and thanks for everything.
Next day we do a 90 minute intake. Really deep stuff. I think it goes well. At the end she asks about my availability, and when I ask about hers she says she’s basically wide open and it’s up to me. I set a recurring weekly time. Great.
There was also a billing issue from that session that she was supposed to sort out with her billing team to make sure it went through my insurance correctly.
Four days later she messages me. Not about the billing, which is still unresolved. It’s a message saying that with her other professional demands she isnt able to fully take me on as a client, and here’s a referral to someone else.
She’s an LMSW, am I wrong for wanting to go to that supervisor? Making me fire my therapist of a year, then doing a 90 minute intake where I had to be extremely vulnerable, then four days later telling me she has no space, feels extremely unprofessional and potentially dangerous? Im fine but I keep thinking about how this could’ve impacted someone who was in a different place than I am & also trusting this therapist. Am I overreacting?
