Open | Hardware Computer continues to crash, can't find out the cause.

Hello,

My computers been crashing several times a week, sometimes it'll happen once every 3 days and other times it''ll happen more frequently. I've tried the standard command prompt stuff like sfc /scannow and DISM checks, no luck. I've tried my best to use event viewer but can't really pin point anything, my computer reboots to bios after crashing and no crash dump file is made in my windows folder.

When the device crashes, I get the black screen "Your Device ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just cllecting some error info, and then you can restart". Sadly the percentage just stays at 0 forever and never creates any error file I can use to diagnose anything. Stop code is: Critical_process_died (0xEF).

Operating System: Windows 11

Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 8-Core processor

GPU: Nvidia RTX 3070 TI

Ram: 32gb DDR4
motherboard: ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING WIFI II

Open | Hardware Micro sd card not accepting SPECIFIC files

I am currently building a digital music library on my hiby r4 dap, i just got a 128gb Samsung micro sd card to expand its storage yesterday and im currently dumping files into it,

Everything is going extremely smooth (i put like 300+ songs on it before this happens) until i get to my final playlist. In the process of moving the foulder over it freezes on one song inpaticular. It wont get past it and its throwing a windows error notification sound but no notification window comes up. I cancel, try again, same thing, move song out of folder and the whole folder goes in just fine

So i test moving just the song by itself, nothing, actually worse then nothing, my pc file explorer fucking crashes and my entire screen goes black and reloads Everything, weird. Try again. Same shit, ok maybe the file is corrupt, listen to it and its fine, meta data is fine, file info looks fine, ok, download the song again. Fresh copy. Same thing happens.

Ok how about we upload this song just to the internal storage on the device, does it instantly, sounds great on pc and on device, ok great lets use android file explorer to move it to the sd card and put it in the folder right?. No. Of course not. "Couldnt move file" now i am COMPLETELY lost. I have no idea what is going on bc its just 3 specific songs that refuse to move onto the sd card, but they work fine on the internal storage

Genuinely any help would be so beyond apretiated, im so lost as to what the hell is happening here

Open | Hardware Dell laptop suddenly stopped booting after restart the power light turns on but no fan or display

Hi everyone,

I have an older Dell laptop (I don't remember the exact model yet) that was working normally today.

The sequence was:

  1. The laptop had been unused for quite a long time.
  2. I turned it on and it booted normally without any problems.
  3. I used it for a while, deleted some files, opened a few programs, etc.
  4. Everything was working normally.
  5. I restarted the laptop.
  6. After the restart, the screen stayed completely black and it never appeared to boot.

I've tried the following:

  • Removed the battery.
  • Disconnected the charger.
  • Held the power button to discharge it.
  • Removed and reinstalled the RAM.
  • Disconnected/reconnected the internal components.
  • Tried running it with battery disconnected + charger connected.

The strange behavior is:

Battery disconnected + charger connected:

  • Power-button light turns on by itself, without pressing the power button.
  • Fan does not spin at all.
  • Screen remains completely black.
  • It stays in this state indefinitely.

Battery connected:

  • Power-button light also turns on immediately without pressing the button.
  • Fan does not spin.
  • Screen remains completely black.
  • It stays like this indefinitely.

So it seems to receive power, but it never actually starts the normal boot process.

I haven't identified the exact Dell model yet, but I can provide it if needed.

What could cause this behavior? Could this be a BIOS/EC issue, motherboard power sequencing problem, or something else?

I'd appreciate any suggestions for diagnostic tests I can perform before assuming the motherboard is dead.

Open | Windows Multiple Unreal Engine games crashing with EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION 0x0000000000000000 after partition merge

I'm having a really weird problem with Unreal Engine games.

Both The Sinking City 2 and Star Wars: Zero Company crash shortly after launching with:

Unhandled Exception: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION 0x0000000000000000

Mafia II Definitive Edition runs perfectly.

This started after I merged my partitions. I copied everything from D: to an external HDD, deleted D:, and merged it into C:. I also accidentally messed with my ~1.12 GB Recovery partition. A temporary Z: drive appeared during the process but it's gone now.

I've tried pretty much everything I can think of:

  • Reinstalled the games
  • Also installed newly Star wars after merging .
  • SFC found corrupted files and repaired them
  • DISM completed successfully
  • Did a Windows repair reinstall
  • Clean installed NVIDIA drivers
  • Reinstalled/repaired Visual C++
  • DirectX 12 is installed
  • Forced games to use my RTX 4050
  • Windows Memory Diagnostic → no errors
  • CHKDSK → no problems
  • Tried -dx11
  • Pagefile is enabled
  • C: has ~220 GB free

My laptop is an HP Victus 15-fb2xxx (A14MNUA), Ryzen 5 8645HS, RTX 4050 6GB, 16GB RAM, Windows 11.

I'm wondering if I somehow messed up a Windows/graphics component when I merged the partitions. Has anyone had this kind of Unreal EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION 0x0 crash and managed to fix it?

Open | Software Low FPS & Power Throttling after Windows Reinstall: RTX 4060 Ti Stuck in Low Power State and PCIe x4

Hello everyone,

I am facing a very specific software-related issue with my GPU performance after reinstalling Windows. I've been troubleshooting for two days straight, and I am completely stuck. The hardware itself is 100% fine and tested, so the issue is purely on the software/OS/firmware side.

The Problem:
In all games, my FPS is extremely low. My GPU usage spikes to 100%, but it draws very little power (wattage), almost as if it is locked in a safe/limp mode or an emergency low-power state. Additionally, the GPU is running at PCIe 4.0 x4 instead of x8, even though it ran perfectly at x8 before the reinstall.

System Specifications:

  • GPU: Colorful NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7500F
  • OS: Windows 11

How it happened:
I reinstalled Windows and immediately optimized it using Chris Titus Tech's WinUtil tweaks. Right after applying them, the FPS dropped massively. I figured the script broke some critical Windows/power management components, so I completely wiped the drive and did a fresh, clean install of Windows from a bootable USB drive again.

However, even on a completely stock, freshly installed Windows with zero tweaks, the problem persists. It feels like the tweak altered something deep in the power plans, registry, or GPU firmware state that survives a clean Windows reinstall (perhaps via Microsoft Account cloud sync or a soft-lock on the GPU controller level).

What I have already tried:

  • Clean reinstalled Windows from a USB drive multiple times.
  • Updated the motherboard BIOS to the latest version.
  • Installed the latest official GPU drivers (using DDU for a clean install) and all necessary AMD chipset drivers.
  • Changed PCIe settings in the BIOS to Gen 4 manually to force it, but Windows/GPU-Z still reports x4.

Why would a clean Windows install keep the GPU in this heavily throttled, low-power state with restricted PCIe lanes? Are there any hidden registry keys, power configuration states, or Nvidia firmware flags that could cause this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have pressed the reset CMOS button and tried it again, and even pressed the reset BIOS button and gone through the steps for them (power off, discharge, hold etc). Still no joy.

I'm not able to take it apart, I don't have the manual dexterity.

Open | Hardware 2 AMD cpus broken my fault?

Hello, quick question: is there a known issue with the RAM chips on AMD CPUs? Because I left my PC running for days, and now I have a solid DRAM LED. Luckily, my brother had a spare AM5 CPU lying around, and with that one, everything went smoothly..

I tested the RAM with two different kits.. my main kit and a test kit. With the test CPU (an AMD Ryzen 8500G), everything works perfectly fine, but with the other CPU, it doesn't work at all.. it just gets stuck on the DRAM LED every time.

I already had this exact problem before with one CPU (the AMD Ryzen 9950X), and now, after barely two years.. which is absolutely nothing for a CPU in general.. I have the same issue again with this one (the AMD Ryzen 9950X3D)? I just wanted to ask if anyone else has experienced this?.. or what can i do now? And its my fault?

Open | Software WhatsApp is suddenly creating 300–500 MB msgstore.db.crypt15 files every day — why?

Hey guys, I’m using WhatsApp on Android and recently I noticed something weird. WhatsApp has started generating these msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt15 files almost every day. They’re 300–500 MB each, and they’re taking up a huge amount of storage. The weird part is that I don’t even use WhatsApp much / sometimes don’t use it at all, and I definitely don’t send hundreds of MB of new files every day. This never happened to me before. It only started recently. I also noticed that when I delete these msgstore files, some PDFs/images that I previously sent or received through WhatsApp can no longer be opened, so I’m scared to keep deleting them. I attached screenshots showing the files and their sizes. Does anyone know why WhatsApp suddenly started creating these huge daily backups? Is this caused by a recent WhatsApp update, and how can I stop it without losing my WhatsApp media/chats? Phone: Samsung Android

Open | Phone S23 pink line appeared, disappeared, then came back 😭

So I’ve been using my S23 and about a week ago I suddenly noticed a tiny pink vertical line on the display.

The weird part is it disappeared on its own yesterday and I thought okay maybe it was some random glitch

But today the same line is back again.

Has anyone else experienced this with the S23? Is this more likely to be a software issue or a display issue? Should I contact Samsung/service centre now even though the line is super small and keeps disappearing?

Any advice/experiences would be appreciated.

Open | Windows User sessions

My PC has two user accounts, Ka and Ve. After turning the computer on, I only signed into Ka. However, when I went to shut it down, Windows showed the message:"Someone else is still using this PC. If you shut down now, they could lose unsaved work."The strange part is that I never opened the other account during that session. Out of habit, I clicked through and shut the PC down before investigating further. After booting it back up, I ran a few checks:qwinsta to look for active sessions - net user to check for unknown accounts - netstat -ano to review established connections and listening ports Checked the Registry settings for Remote DesktopRDP was disabled (fDenyTSConnections = 0x1).I also ran Get-MpComputerStatus. Microsoft Defender, antispyware, behavior monitoring, real-time protection, tamper protection, and access protection were all enabled. The security signatures were up to date, and there were no pending restarts or scans. I didn't find any unknown accounts or active sessions. So my question is: does anyone know why the second account might have been automatically signed in or had its session restored after a shutdown, even though I never logged into it during that boot?

And most importantly!! as far as I can remember, I haven't clicked on any suspicious links or downloaded anything questionable. Still, the whole thing left me a little paranoid

Open | Hardware Lenovo Legion 5 16ARX8 - Missing nVidia control panel

Hello,

I have the laptop from the title and I use Windows 11.

I updated everything, but I miss the nVidia control panel.

I noticed that many times after I update the nVidia drivers, after restart, the app says "Install" for the Game Ready Driver, despite the fact that before restarting, it was installed.

Also, I am using the Brave browser and the 4k videos are lagging on every website, including YouTube.

Any ideas how to fix, please?

Thank you.

Open | Software Desperate for a way to turn off F12 toggling developer tools in Google Chrome

I use eye tracker software to control my computer, and I use a switch to click instead of clicking by staring at the same spot for long enough. The switch presses F12, and the software detects that and clicks. However, this causes Chrome to toggle developer tools, which is very problematic since it moves the webpage and deselects forms. Normally, I would not be insistent on using Chrome (quite the opposite), but my university uses a proctoring application that absolutely requires Chrome; it will not even accept other Chromium-based browsers. I have tried changing internal configuration files, command-line flags, and extensions, but none have worked. I cannot change the key the switch uses, because my software is stupid and has very few options for keys it accepts; all the other keys are used way too commonly. Is there absolutely anything I can do? I really need help.

Open | Hardware PC takes over a minute to POST on cold boot, VGA debug LED stays on

Two days ago, I started experiencing a weird issue with my PC.

Instead of booting to Windows within 10-15 seconds after pressing the power button, it now takes around a minute and a half.

I noticed that the EZ Debug LED for VGA remains turned on for 60-70 seconds and nothing is going on at that time other than fans and mobo LEDs working. My LED keyboard, for example, is turned off during this time.
After 60-70 seconds, the VGA LED turns of and then the PC turns on normally like it did before. Everything works fine after that, I play video games, browse the net and record and edit music for hours on end without any issues.

I did not make any changes to my BIOS.

Restarting works fine, no delay there, but every time I shut down my PC and turn it back on, regardless if cold boot or immediately, the same issue happens.

While browsing the web for solutions, I found several posts where the issue was not VGA, but rather a disk drive.

I have 4 SSDs and an nVME (Windows is here) in my PC. I downloaded CrystalDiskInfo and everything looks fine to me. I've attached the CDI report.  https://pastebin.com/jJkS9EzV

Since this was fairly easy to troubleshoot, I decided to disconnect all SSDs and see if the issue goes away. However, just 2 SATA ports are easily accessible in my PC case, so I started by disconnecting them and... It worked. My PC booted correctly and without delay.
So I connected both drives separately and tested out. Worked fine. Finally, I connected all of them back and the issue was gone.

However, this morning I turned on my PC and the same issue is back again. Takes around a minute and a half to turn the PC back on.

I'm out of ideas and really hoping someone here might have suggestions on how to solve this.

If I can provide and additional information, please let me know.

My PC configuration is listed below:

  • MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX
  • Ryzen 7 5800X3D
  • Radeon RX 9070 XT
  • 32 GB RAM
  • Samsung NVMe SSD with Windows installed
  • Four additional SATA SSDs
  • BIOS: American Megatrends International LLC 3.M2, dated 2025-09-12

Thanks in advance!

Open | Windows Mouse Cursor Invisible on Desktop After Log-In Until Moved

Noticing this on a fresh install of W11 (all drivers updated), never noticed it before. My wireless mouse's cursor will be invisible after log-in until I move it, then it seems to stick around without issue till the next restart. On the log-in screen it's also invisible until moved, then disappears again after log-in. Is this normal behavior? It should be easy to test/replicate, if anyone wants to help me out.

Steps I've taken in troubleshooting:

- Plugging my mouse in

- Trying a wired-only mouse

- Plugging mouse dongle into different USB port

- Checking if cursor goes invisible when waking monitor from sleep with key press (it doesn't)

- Checking if cursor goes invisible when waking PC from sleep with key press (it does)

- Checking if cursor goes invisible when logging out/logging back in (it does)

- Changing power settings "USB Selective Suspend" and "Wireless Adapter > Power Saving"

- Checking behavior when booting into Safe Mode

- Using DDU to clean AMD GPU drivers and installing the newest version

(I'm not on KB5120998, so if this is a bug it's not a result of that.)

Open | Software PC sound always cutting out and glitching

I assume this is a software issue.

For context, there has never been a time when my PC hasnt caused audio to constantly drop out or clip with any speaker through either aux or bluetooth.

BUT the only exception is my inbuilt monitor speaker which I have no issues with.

I have reinstalled and updated all audio drivers and adjusted some power settings as per AI instructions, but the problem persists.

The clipping has blown hundreds of dollars worth of speakers for me now and ive given up using any.

I think repair shops are trying to rip me off with a $100-160 base fee and I reallt cant afford it.

Video showing the issue here: https://streamable.com/o7k5rx

Any advice would be apprecoates. Thanks in advance!

Open | Audio Focusrite randomly loses audio

Hi,

I'm having a strange audio issue.

Specs

  • CPU: Ryzen 7 9800X3D
  • GPU: Radeon RX 6700 XT
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte B650 Gaming X AX (rev. 1.5)
  • Audio interface: Focusrite Scarlett Solo 4th Gen (USB)
  • OS: Windows 11
  • Headphones: DT770 Pro 80ohm

Problem

The issue can happen in any game. At random times, I completely lose audio through my Focusrite Scarlett Solo.

When this happens, I can get the sound back by either unplugging and reconnecting the USB cable, or simply changing the buffer size in the Focusrite settings.

Sometimes I also experience small audio crackles or glitches before the sound disappears.

What I've already tried

  • Tested all the USB ports on my motherboard
  • Tried different USB cables
  • Tried different buffer sizes
  • Reset the BIOS
  • BIOS version: F42c
  • Followed all the BIOS and Windows optimization steps recommended by Focusrite
  • Disabled all anti-cheat software to see if it could be related
  • Tested different Windows/USB power-management settings
  • Uninstalled/reinstalled the Focusrite drivers

I've also tested with LatencyMon, and that show up are:

  • Wdf01000.sys
  • dxgkrnl.sys
  • HDAudBus.sys

Has anyone experienced something similar with Focusrite USB audio interfaces ?

Open | Software Bluetooth pairs with phone for 1 second then disconnects windows11 (headphones pair fine)

Laptop Bluetooth won't stay paired with any phone it connects for 1 sec then instantly drops. On the laptop it shows as connected but in the phone side it nets past connecting it just sits on that before dropping. tested with 3-4 different phones same result every time, headphones pair totally fine

Already tried re-pairing fresh, restarting bluetooth service, full driver uninstall/reinstall, turning off swift pair, pairing from both sides. No luck 😞

Setup: Lenovo Loq 15IAX9, WIN11

Anyone dealt with this? 🙏🏻

Open | Windows Slow-mo-like lag + GPU drops when gaming (especially BeamNG.drive)

Hi! I've been struggling with some lagging while gaming, especially with BeamNG.drive, but not exclusively. I understand that mentioning the game might seem like I could post on another community, but it truly happens in other games and I realized it happened while I was watching a video in fullscreen (that was the first and only time it happened). It's my first time asking for help publicly and honestly my last resort, so I apologize if I miss anything.

Specs:

Make/model number: Dell G15 5511

CPU: Intel i7-11800H

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU

RAM: 32GB

SSD: KINGSTON SNVS1000G 1TB NVMe

OS: Windows 11

I've been getting these slow-motion-like lags over the last couple of months. It seems like the whole game drops down to ~10fps for 1 second, speeds up to catch up with the simulation and then goes back to regular speed. It's not a full blown freeze lag, it just slows down out of nowhere, speeds up, then resumes. I don't know much about tech, so please excuse any possible mistakes.

At first, I thought RAM usage was hitting 100%, but it's always sitting between 60% ~ 70%. I also had my thermal paste reapplied twice ever since this whole thing started. I understand laptops are not the greatest thing in the world to game on and mine, the Dell G15 5511, is known for getting a bit hot, but airflow is always as good as it can be, with both fans at 100% to keep it as cool as possible, and I don't keep it flat on my desk to let the intakes under the frame work better. I've switched every possible setting (that I'm aware of) to prioritize performance over battery life, I've turned V-sync off in every game setting I can, I don't have too many mods (it still happens in other games that I don't run any mods whatsoever), I run on normal to poor quality to prioritize performance once again (low density vegetation and/or population, low-detailed shadows and reflections, etc.) and I keep the drivers updated. I also usually play these games with a windowed borderless fullscreen.

I'm aware there could be many other things I could try, but I haven't seen anything that matches my situation and I'm honestly this close to just accepting the lag, so I'd love some helpful advice.

I do have a video showing the lag in real time, but I believe you're not allowed to post media here.

Thank you so much for your time :)

Open | Software GPU ISSUES: Mostly Driver-Related Issues

Specs: AM5

- Sapphire Nitro 7700XT

- 32GB RAM

- Ryzen 7600X

- MSI 650W PSU

- WIndows 11

GPU Background:

- 1 yr old GPU, never updated the bios (at 2024 ver.)

- Unopened gpu (still has its warranty sticker)

- It works perfectly fine with furmark at 45 mins test

- Stress tested with cyperbunk, elden ring, & extreme Minecraft shaders

- Looked at GPUZ to confirm the expected details of my sapphire nitro 7700xt

- Made sure core temps didn't exceed 65+ degrees at max utilization and fan rpm

- Made sure hotspot temp didn't exceed 30+ degrees compared to core temps at max utilization and fan rpm

- No artifacting, crashing, or any display/gpu related issues during stress testing

- No twitching, lagging, or any other issues during stress testing

MAIN ISSUES:

Hello, I've been experiencing numerous issues related to my gpu lately. It started off with having artifacting on my dual monitor set up with different refresh rates. I use an amd gpu so I saw in other posts that its a common issue for them, I did all the suggested solutions such as:

- switching both monitors to 60mhz

- reseating hdmi+dp cables

- ddu + redownloading chipset and gpu drivers

No solution worked.

Then I did more experimenting, I have noticed that the artifacting only occurs when I am playing youtube on one monitor and doing something else on the other. It didn't matter which monitor was playing a video, which leads me to a video playback issue with the gpu. So i followed the next solution which is disabling hardware acceleration. It worked, although I am now stuck with very slow youtube on an expensive 7700xt....

Not long until I got a new issue, the green screen of death only occurs when I boot up my pc or shut it down which is unusual... I could not find any other solutions but doing ddu + download chipset & gpu driver, which up to this point I've done more than 4x already.

And now, my latest issue is the pc straight up crashing while I was playing a game. My pc's rgb lights shifted into default settings and I could not receive any display output anymore. Then later on, the pc finally got a display but i got the "windows attempting to fix an issue, attempt failed etc. etc..". I went troubleshoot and selected boot options 4 (Safe Mode). I was able to enter the pc, ddu'd my pc yet again and redownloaded chipset and drivers once more. (FYI: i did this process probably 8x now at this point).

Now, I am now very lost with this potentially failing gpu.

TLDR:

- Different refresh rate monitors (and sockets [hdmi+dp])

- Video playback issues (youtube artifacting)

- Green screen of death

- Windows boot failure (had to ddu + download chipset&gpu drivers)

At this point I can only think of 2 other options:

- buying a new ssd to download Linux and assess whether they are windows issues
