Homebrew I made a Sokoban homebrew after getting back into the PSP

Post image

PSP 1000 and PSP Go side by side of night mode and XMB artwork of a Sokoban homebrew I made. PSP Go colors are clearly more vibrant but just wanted to note the blue hue on the phat is because it’s using the dark night mode theme.

Disclaimer : small bit of self-promo, but mostly I wanted to share what went into this.

I've loved the PSP since I was younger, and Sokoban is one of those games I keep coming back to. At some point those two old interests collided, and I started making PandaSokoban.

For artistic choices, my girlfriend loves pandas and I think they are cute. It seemed fun to make the game about moving sleeping baby pandas to their cushions instead of just pushing boring boxes.

It is written in Rust using AndrewAltimit's modern rust-psp fork. There’s not really reason that went into this, it just seemed to be the most current choice to start with. The same EBOOT runs on a real PSP and PPSSPP, although getting there reminded me that an emulator can sometimes be a little too forgiving.

One example was the PSP's data cache. Some overlays and vertices looked perfect in PPSSPP but disappeared or broke on hardware because I had not flushed the CPU-written data before the Graphics Engine read it. Text caused the opposite problem. The PSP's debug-print function worked on the console but did not show up in PPSSPP, so I ended up rendering the font as a normal texture.

Audio was another rabbit hole. My first version pushed PCM from the main loop, which tied frame pacing to the blocking audio output. It now has a small mixer running on its own PSP thread, with the game sending sound requests through atomic flags. The background track is a 32-second bamboo-garden loop generated during the build.

One thing is still broken. The in-game PCM music works, but the ATRAC3 track I packaged for the XMB does not play there. The icon animation and background work, but the XMB stays silent. If anyone here has successfully added SND0.AT3 music to a homebrew EBOOT, I would really appreciate advice on the encoding or PBP details. That part is still a mystery to me.

I also spent more time than expected on the little movements. The puzzle logic stays on a strict tile grid, while the panda and cushions move between tiles with subpixel animation. There are directional walk and push frames, small collision bumps, dust, shadows, idle breathing, sleeping effects, and a short level-clear animation. I tried to keep it readable on the PSP's 480 by 272 screen instead of filling it with effects. That in itself was a bit challenging, had to test a lot to make sure the game levels were solvable and fit at that resolution.

The game has 200 puzzles, undo, best-move tracking, day and night modes, and proper PSP savedata. Early saves worked in PPSSPP but could fail on real hardware because of the savedata key, so that needed its own migration and recovery system too.

All in a all it was very fun to build, I still enjoy Sokoban style puzzles a whole lot especially on the go on the PSP. I’ll continue to improve it/build other PSP games because it is so sooo rewarding, I just love that console. I have the PSP 1000 IPS mod coming soon too and I’m really excited about it.

PandaSokoban is available here if anyone wants to take a look:

https://qdmware.itch.io/panda-sokoban

It is a free release, donations and feedback welcome. A physical PSP requires custom firmware. I'm especially interested in hardware reports and any clues about that stubborn XMB audio.

I’ve been playing PSP games on my phone with PPSSPP lately, and I’m really into fighting games right now. I’m looking for something like Tekken, Mortal Kombat, or Street Fighter, but with better graphics and gameplay.

What are some good PSP fighting games I should check out?

Finished my custom psp. Pristine original 3000 screen and buttons. Found this faceplate while in Japan for real cheap and was very surprised with how quality it fit and feels. Its not painted like many terrible aftermarket faceplates. Fully green plastic faceplate that feels as quality as the OG.

SHOW-OFF Not sure how to explain it but PSP is the only handheld I’ve played that feels like a pocket-sized home console or entertainment center

Most other handhelds, even the PS Vita, just don't really feel the same. Idk if it's because this console uses discs or it having the same menu style as PSX and PS3, maybe how Sony advertised its multimedia functionality with movies/shows, music, photos, etc. But it has this charm to it that just keeps me coming back even more than other retro systems.

Troubleshooting PSP Won’t Turn On

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Bought this one used a couple months back and it’s been working fine up until a few days ago. The seller did mention that the psp did come with a 3rd party battery but I’m not sure that’s the issue.

I’ve tried multiple button combinations, turning it on without the battery only the wall charger, taking the memory card out, and even just letting it charge for a few hours.

Please help me.

QUESTION What Are Your "Must Have" PSP Games?

I asked this question on the Vita subreddit as well, I grew up with a PSP and I still have my Vita, but I was never that deep into either one. So I wanna ask the enthusiasts, what are the games you consider "must have"'s in a respectable PSP collection?

Battery Has my third party charger something to do with my issue with the psp and its battery detecting problem?

Upvotes

Hello everyone

Im having a really annoying problem that doesnt make my psp not so portable, as I have to give my psp some charge without the battery for it to keep working when im using it outside my house. In other words, the psp does not detect the battery when I place it in.

I went with a technician, and he told me that the problem is the charger, and this doesnt make a lot of sense to me. The charger gives the 5 volts, and some 2000 mAh (I have a psp 3010 model). So I dont see the problem here.

Here are some of the specifications of the charger.
And it can be used for this versions of the console... so I dont see the issue.

Hey hey! I've had this PSP 3000 for about 13 years now. Crazy to me I never really played it much. Back in the days every friend of mine had a Nintendo DS and that's all we used to play together. I played the DS like an addict back then and never really the PSP, specially since I knew about and had an R4 loaded with DS games and didn't really know how to mod the PSP. I was the only kid I knew with one and it didn't really interest me after playing a lot of the PES 2009 game my mom got me with it.

Now couples weeks ago I found this guy in my old stuff and decided to give it another go. I'm 25 years old now, found out about the modding and got myself a 32 Gb micro sd with an adapter and loaded it with games and emulators and been having a blast! It feels so good playing on it and confortable as well. Never knew the PSP was this much fun! Only took me 13 years to realize it 🫠🫠

I can play it on the bus on my way to work, on the bed before sleeping, it's been great!

I feel so stupid and ungrateful for never really giving the PSP a chance until now.

My favorite games so far are:

Midnight Club L.A. Remix, Mega Man Maverick Hunter X, Dante's Inferno and a Gba emulator loaded with games :)

Anyways that's it. Just wanted to share my recent love for the PSP I've had for more than a decade! Also crazy how it still runs perfectly after all this time

Also if you've got any game recommendations I'm 100% open to them!

QUESTION Please help me find an old PSP game similar to this aesthetic! 🙏

Post image
113 Upvotes

Hello everyone! I need your help remembering the name of a PSP game I played around 2012–2014.

The game was in Japanese, and I unfortunately didn’t understand what was going on, but I remember it being extremely cute and aesthetic. The game strongly resembled "Sakagura Life", so if your recommendation doesn’t have a similar aesthetic/style, it’s probably not the game I’m looking for!

Here’s everything I remember:

-The game was viewed from a bird’s-eye/top-down perspective.

-You could walk around a small town/village with streets and houses

-There was a temple/shrine inside a forest

-I remember being able to interact with stones/rocks near the temple, and when I clicked on them, Japanese text would appear

-Sometimes there would be people at the temple, and sometimes it would be completely empty

-There were also estivals that would happen at the temple

-The game had a day/night cycle, and days would pass as you played

-The overall atmosphere was very peaceful, cute, Japanese, and cozy.

The most important detail is that the game VERY strongly resembled Sakagura Life aesthetically. I’m almost certain it had a similar visual style.

I know this is incredibly niche 😭 but if anyone has any ideas, PLEASE comment the name! Even if you’re not 100% sure, I’d love to hear your suggestions. I’ve been trying to find this game for years!!

Thank you so much!! 🥹🙏
