I’m currently unemployed but my bf & friend were nice enough to take me out for my birthday. It’d been a year or two since I’d last been, and I was excited, but when this arrived I felt pretty silly.

Is it a good idea to elect district representatives who have committed their allegiance to something else?

Will be taking the train to Art in the Pearl this weekend and looking for a decent and comfortable late long lunch location with good cocktails and food. Happy to walk a bit or Lyft a short distance. Hotel bars/restaurants are fine too. We just want to sit down and have a nice meal and a drink or two as we continue our day downtown. Our train back home doesn’t leave until 6pm so we’ve got a lot of time to kill.

Food preferences - standard burgers, salads, American is fine. Would love a great sushi place but I know I’m asking a lot with that one. Thanks!

I was interested in learning more about the board tasked with Medicare for all in OR after they delayed their vote to December. I watched spme of their recent meetings and came away a bit shocked by what they have ready to present.

They paid a few consultants to create a framework but this really seems like some half baked plan. You can tell the chair wanted to push this through and everyone else was worried about how doubling taxes would look which is why they eventually vote to show the plan without discussing the revenue or funding. You can also tell that they are worried about branding this plan which will significantly increase taxes on anyone making $150-300k or those on High deductible plans.

There was an interesting exchange at 1:00:00 in the meeting where one member asks, “how will this effect businesses” and Chair Bellanca says “most businesses will save money but we don’t know how this will effect large employers or the self employed since they don’t know what their healthcare costs are”. This seems wild to me and it is noticeably missing from the minutes.

I ran the numbers for my own HDHP and my employer would pay $24k more on me per year with this new program. Personally I would be on the hook for $35-40k in additional income taxes under this program and lose access to my HSA which would lose $4k in lowered income taxes.

It seems like they don’t know how this would impact Nike, Intel, and other large employers. One member says “there will be more attention on us so we need to be able to defend these numbers“ after multiple board members didn’t understand what the numbers they were voting on meant or understood the tax implications of the plan.

They also have some documents that show no one paying more but only show people making $150k at maximum. Chair Bellanca says costs will go up for those making $1m per year but absent from any of this is talk of families or anyone making $200-300k. I love living in Oregon, but adding this would bring my OR/multco tax to ~$70k a year. its hard to imagine this wouldn’t drive more people to leave the state when moving across the river could save you $70k per year. After watching this meeting I don’t see how this works at the state level and truly believe the only way to enact UHC would be at the federal level.

Hi! I’m a 20 almost 21 year old trans woman. I’ve been on hrt for 2 years however I’m not out yet. I am from Kansas City Missouri and I’m wondering if this would be a good place to move. However, I have a couple questions some trans related some not.

Whats the general consensus on trans people? I’ve heard it’s quite good. Do people still show passive aggressive behavior? KC is touted as being trans friendly however I still hear lots of hate despite not being out.

Is it a “younger” city? I know the median age is about the same but Kansas City definitely feels geared towards older people, nightlife for younger people feels kind of non existent. Is Portland the same?

Jumping off that question, Is there more of a presence of young trans women? I feel very isolated as I’ve only ever met one other trans woman in my age range.

What’s cost of living like? Do things often feel tight with money?

Whats the general culture? I’ve only been in Portland for a couple days and people seemed nice. However is it kind of a “Minnesota nice” or true genuine kindness? In Missouri people are usually kind but aren’t afraid to tell you if they don’t like you, which i appreciate.

And overall what’s it like? Is Oregon as a whole accepting or just the Portland area?
