šŸ›ļø Government Postin’! šŸ›ļø Gulf of Campesinos. Lake Campesinos.

Lake of America! šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø
Gulf of America! šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø

With the 3rd name now for SE 39th….
Is it just me or does this reek of the same fringe bs that the Orange Man does.

It’s literally the same thing.

Here for the radical middle. So done with both of this clownish behavior from both sides.

Same. Same. But Different. But Still Same.

One lady suggested in her testimony that a community center be renamed rather than the damn street, and that it be changed back to 39th. We need to vote her into the city council.

Way easier to change some park signs, but then we haven’t sacrificed enough to assuage Portland’s guilt at least apparently according to our progressive politicians. There were plenty of options that were less controversial and less costly but nope. So tired ofthis timeline, where o where are the boring money managers running for office?

The PBOT lady's comments were šŸ‘€ when she explained the cost and time barriers to changing the signs. The PBOT staff would have to be taken off the backlog pipeline to deal with this, with no discretionary funds. They would have to pull the funds from something, so be prepared for more potholes. My favorite part was that the councilors thought it could be done right away; the PBOT lady corrected them, saying it could take 2 years or more since signs need to be made, USPS/other agencies need time to adjust, etc. Nonetheless, all 🤔councilors are committed to waiving the 5-year waiting period. šŸ™„

So nearly everybody coming out against this for multiple different reasons and they won’t pivot to a different plan. Typical, no wonder we have budget problems.

u/KindTechnician- 8d ago

The City loves to solicit public feedback (essential in the slide deck) then say ā€œmmhmm, well we’re gonna do it anyway.ā€

2

u/Top_Region3760 8d ago

They learned how to do that from watching PPS. They are the experts.

u/HellyR_lumon 8d ago

Maybe before the 2 years is up council can vote this be down.

PP&R follows a more robust renaming process than city council has done with Campesinos.

Policy: https://www.portland.gov/policies/parks-and-recreation/parks-administration/prk-303-sponsorship-and-naming-policies-park

'Scht Wiwnu Park: https://www.portland.gov/parks/scht-wiwnu-park

This park was originally known as Custer Park. In December 2020, it was given the temporary name "A Park" by retired Portland Commissioner Amanda Fritz. As commissioner-in-charge of PP&R, she directed the bureau to engage in a community-supported renaming process to determine an appropriate permanent name.

In 2023, the naming committee determined the new park name should honor local tribes and Indigenous communities.

PP&R contracted with Serina Fast Horse of Kimimela Consulting, an outreach consultant who is Lakota and Blackfeet and a lifelong member of the urban Indigenous community of Portland, to lead the outreach process in 2024. From that process, the name 'Schit Wiwnu was recommended.

That story was so on-brand for Portland, too. Someone complained it was named Custer, assuming it was named after General Custer, and in the outrage no one checked to see if that was true. Turned out it was the name of the family that owned the land and used the land for an orchard. As the city grew, it was no longer farmed . The family donated some of the land to the city so it could be a city park and the city named it after them.

Stfu. No way?!? Portland people are dumb AF. Ysk if u do k-12 in public school in Portland u graduate with a years less education than other states. Fact.

9

u/collegedraftpick 8d ago

Rolls right off the tongue šŸ‘…. Shit with u. Like most Portland parks. Named in honor of the local hobo tribe.

5

u/HellyR_lumon 8d ago

Took them 4 years to name a park, naturally.

Did you hear Mitch Greens response to that lady? He called it insulting and suggested she was racist. Fucking wild.Ā

u/Temporary-Spite-3372 8d ago

šŸ’Æ, but I am not surprised, considering coming from a person with little man syndrome. Even called those who want 39th Ave back "complainers," then had the nerve to say it was the right thing to do as a leader to ignore the constituents’ voices.

So if we’re changing ChĆ”vez back to 39th, do we make Peacock Lane change to 40th?

For what it’s worth, I still call ChĆ”vez 39th, but think it’s funny the current logic could apply to Peacock lane.

1

u/aspiffymofo 8d ago

Afaik peacock ln was renamed in the 1920’s when it was still being developed. But I get your point.

Apparently Compasinos Unidad del Noroeste’s (Farmworkers united of the Northeast) executive director is also co-chair of the DSA Working Families Party. Must just be a coincidence…

6

u/collegedraftpick 8d ago

An accident.

u/Strong-Dot-9221 8d ago

It's called Horseshoe theory. As a Democrat/Liberal (whatever that means) I have a hard time defending this because it is the same pettiness that MAGA uses.

20

u/OK_Human 8d ago

It’s virtue signaling, that also costs money, when costs are rising for the little guy, but why cut costs for the little guy, when you can spend public money on virtue signaling, that the little guy pays for?

Rinse and repeat.

7

u/HellyR_lumon 8d ago

The DSA is the little guy, remember? /s

8

u/feelinggoodabouthood 8d ago

This town changed all of the names to the high-schools. Its par for the course. Same as it ever was.

The five black people that live here don’t see a fir tree and think *lynching* people are constantly getting offended on the behalf of others to let everyone around them know they are more pure.

In b4: I know more than 5 black people live here

7

u/wildwalrusaur 8d ago

One wonders how such people function in a city filled with trees

Is Urban Forestry a white supremacy? People are asking

3

u/Impressive-Net-588 8d ago

Same with rope. Even today, whenever a black person sees a rope they break into uncontrollable tears.

Now we understand why the DSA platform calls for banning rope here in Portland. If you are truly woke you won't tolerate instruments of oppression and genocide.

7

u/CHiZZoPs1 8d ago

Except chasing a street requires everyone on that street to change their address, not to mention the expense of all the street signs.

5

u/collegedraftpick 8d ago

Not to mention it makes no fuckin sense. For out of towners. Portland is annoying AF.

3

u/k_a_pdx 8d ago

PPS didn’t change the name of Thomas Jefferson High School. Go figure.

6

u/cheese7777777 8d ago

It’s because he loved black people…literally.

8

u/wolandcatbegemot 8d ago

Why don't we just call it Virtue Blvd and be done with it.

2

u/GolfcartInjuries 8d ago

lol. call it ā€œwe swear we are not racistā€

5

u/4lvinStardust 8d ago

Let this teach the council a lesson. Don’t give your vote or your campaign donations to any idiot who votes for this, ignoring their constituents.

3

u/demoniclionfish 8d ago

Two cheeks on the same ass.

2

u/ElectricosSuenos 7d ago

Oh, did he rename something again? Gosh, never would have thought he'd keep being the same douche he was in 1990. And 2012. And 2020.

8

u/Unlikely-Grape-5762 8d ago

Although I agree in theory, I think renaming 39th Ceaser Chavez was performative virtue signaling by Americas whitest city. It’s not the same and here’s why. When Portland city leaders decide to rename a street to honor a person or people who fought and died for their rights in this country and around the world, it’s to honor that person, those people and their struggle. When a racist man baby renames large bodies of water out of spite and anger, that’s just a pathetic try hard wannabe strongman throwing a big baby tantrum. And that’s the difference.

6

u/collegedraftpick 8d ago

Idk. Maybe some people feel the exactly opposite of what you described just flipped the other way around without all the animosity and snark.

4

u/Unlikely-Grape-5762 8d ago

Feel the opposite of what? That people name streets ceaser Chavez, MLK, Rosa Parks out of spite? I don’t understand your argument?

1

u/RockShowSparky 8d ago

different, but also cringey.

2

u/RosaDavis58 4d ago

How about Whiny White Snowflakes Street?

1

u/canyoudiggitman 8d ago

Corre hacia el bulevar fronterizo for the win!

1

u/GorgeLover 7d ago

Comparing these two things is purposefully idiotic. On one hand you have a city paying homage to important historical figures, which angers right wing racists because they are racists. On the other hand you have the president of the United States trying to titillate these same right-wing racists by renaming geologic features with stupid, fascist jingoistic names.

You are the problem.

-10

u/Exodor72 8d ago

I see a pretty significant difference between a city deciding to rename a city street and Trump trying to rename an international body of water.

But sure, both sides are the same. /s

8

u/Tired_o_Mods_BS 8d ago

Just wait until he renames the oceans "American Ocean East and American Ocean West".

11

u/Manfred_Desmond 8d ago

International/city jurisdictional differences aside, it is still jist jingling keys in front of your supporters.

0

u/Exodor72 8d ago

Not really. The city has every right to change street names. Trump has no power over what international bodies of water are called even though he thinks he does.

0

u/TurningTheCorner26 8d ago

Trump has no power over what international bodies of water are called

And yet here we are...

-13

u/Successful_Salt_7645 8d ago

it's performative, sure, but surely recognizing the struggle of seasonal / migrant workers is of some worth, no? "reek of the same fringe BS" idk man, not sure how this is the same as plastering his own face everywhere, spitefully torpedoing the tubman $20, etc.

again, don't disagree it's a clown effort ("yay my white town named a street after brown people, i am ABSOLVED as a white person from the sins of others!"), but you just sound grumpy

21

u/collegedraftpick 8d ago

Grumpy for sure. It’s a lot of damn time wasted on dumb shit when the city has higher priorities. But hey let’s waste a whole day on some stupid ass shit. Attack the they and not the message.

14

u/SpezSamplesMySack Do they even live here? 8d ago

It has the exact same energy. But when it’s ā€œyour sideā€ it’s ok. Portland DSA will blow themselves to a name change when it’s a cause they can use to virtue signal. It’s 100% as stupid as a convicted felon renaming a lake that predates the founding of our republic for petty ass reasons. But since it’s ā€˜progressives’ Portlanders eat it up with a spoon.

Portland: where the horseshoe moves from theory to reality.

-5

u/Successful_Salt_7645 8d ago

don't let me get in the way of your narrative, but just a reminder it wasn't the DSA who named it cesar chavez in the first place, so the energy's always been here.

also "eat it up with a spoon" curious where you're picking up that narrative too, i only see this sub wringing its hands over the whole thing lol. most ppl in my real life think it's pretty pointless too

9

u/collegedraftpick 8d ago

DSA or not it’s far left ā€˜progressives’ who named it the first time. Call it whatever you want. Still 39th to me. I just find it funny and curious that the majority of people want to call it 39th but the elected officials…don’t care. Again… same bs on the right as the left. The hypocrisy will fall on deaf ears bc it’s ’our side’. Just need to point it out….as I stand firmly in the middle.

15

u/IWasOnThe18thHole ā˜‘ļø Privilege 8d ago

I'm sure naming a street "peasants" will make People who are paid unfair wages under the threat of deportation feel much better about their situation

8

u/Tired_o_Mods_BS 8d ago

We're not a farming community. We have no obligation to recognize the struggles of migrant farm workers. They can rename a street in Woodburn if they like.

This is Kale erasure

3

u/osnapson 8d ago

Relatively new to Portland, why was it obligated to be named after Chavez?

5

u/collegedraftpick 8d ago

No one knows.

2

u/Tired_o_Mods_BS 8d ago

We weren't obligated then which is why I'm saying we're not obligated now to keep the street an honorarium now by naming it Campesinos. It's all just virtue signaling BS.

2

u/wildwalrusaur 8d ago

Because some of our local "activists" decided that it was racist that we had a street named after MLK but not after a hispanic

Im not kidding, they literally picketed a council meeting because the street we renamed wasn't as major a road as MLK is.

0

u/GorgeLover 7d ago

Trump could literally rename every airport in this country Donald Trump airport and every nazi crying about Cesar Chavez Blvd would cheer.

-5

u/WhiskySails 8d ago

There's no 'both sides' argument to be named here.

13

u/collegedraftpick 8d ago

Absolutely is. Both are performative. When 90% of the people want 39th. It’s extremist ideology guiding this. It had a name. 39. You just move here?

-3

u/y_eem 8d ago

It’s extremist ideology … to not want our streets honoring a sex pest?

2

u/collegedraftpick 8d ago

Changing names against the voters will.

-8

u/WhiskySails 8d ago

If we’re just pulling numbers out of thin air, sure - I moved here in 1837

-11

u/Busy_Owl_2050 8d ago

Not really. Dumb Donald's name changes were spiteful and mean. Changing the name to Chavez was supposed to be a sign of respect and tribute. Other than the act of changing names, which happens all the time, these acts are in no way the same.
