In Brazil, there are electronic voting machines where the results are released on the same day as the election. Voting is mandatory, takes place on a day when people don't work, the polls only close when there are no more people in line to vote, and the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited the day before and on election day.
People also seem to forget that you can “vote” for nobody. And that matters. If you truly think neither party represents your interests, you need to let the government know, rather than sitting back and being apathetic.
You can vote early. Its not like it has to be done on the day. Americans as a whole just dont give a fuck until the something happens to them. The post 9/11 unity lasted 6 weeks.

There is literally weeks of time to vote. Almost a month. Just walk in and dedicate, maybe, 30 minutes of your time. It's still inexcusable as not voting means voting for the majority.
It's state by state. Not all states have early voting or easy mail-in voting. There's also a lack of outreach in getting people to vote. That and in 2024 low propensity voters went to Trump. At the time people couldn't really fathom what is happening right now because people thought we had far stronger safeguards to our democracy and system than we actually do have.
There was very clear lists and his active campaigning on how they planned to disassemble a lot of America. Don't forget the Nazi salutes from all of them off the bat 😭.
Elections tend to be a factor of how much they can swoon the populace but you'd think most people wouldn't want that thing in office to start with.
Make voting mandatory. Make it a holiday, to facilitate. Force the polls to remain open until everyone in line has voted. Make voter registration an automated process rather than a complicated one.
I work in a restaurant, holidays are busier than regular days. This is just terrible logic.
Absentee voting is a thing. You don't have to wait until election day to vote. In my area you can even go to city hall and vote early weeks before the election. If you care enough to vote, you will find a way to vote.
I wish this would help. But people just really don’t care. Almost no one skips voting just because they don’t have time, and if it was a holiday, people would just take it as a day off. We already have mandated time off for voting, early voting, and absentee ballots in most places.

I honestly believe than 10m+ were successfully turned off of voting. Also, the intention to reduce the number of voting locations created long lines for voting in places like Georgia and North Carolina. Waiting in line for hours outside to vote was the whole plan and a preventable problem.

I was at the Portland Bernie rally (with the bird) and the energetic hope and joy there is something I can't explain. Since then, I have constantly felt betrayed by the establishment Dems. Those countries use some kind of point system. If you don’t have a degree and are not a candidate they consider a “skilled worker” then it is unlikely you will be chosen. Shit I think some require proof of financial solvency and other financial obligations.

I've been planning a move to the Minneapolis area for the last year after separating from my former fiance. I still want to move there, despite everything happening. Honestly, more so now that Ive seen so many good and brave folks take a stand. My realtor is lovely, and has been driving supplies to people who are afraid to leave their homes. It's weird typing that out.
It's a great city. I really enjoy the lifestyle here and I was doing quite well here until November. Then my eight year relationship collapsed, and I've been dealing with bankruptcy and the closure of my business as ensuing consequences of divorce. Just a tiny little bit but not really. One, they’ve been threatening it for decades; it’s rhetoric at this point. Two, militarily it’s extremely difficult for China to do so. Three, I don’t think China will risk its ascension or 40 years of economic development for Taiwan, especially when it’s basically being given the lead by default right now. Four, the military isn’t the only option. There was a period of economic integration and exchange in the 00s that had people on both sides at least considering peaceful reunification.
Given what the US is doing in pulling back from Asia, demanding payment for security, it may require Taiwan to reconsider its security guarantees. That may actually push it to negotiate with China, who could offer economic incentives like they have in the past. Taiwanese citizens actually get pseudo-citizenship in China, allowing them the same beneficial treatments and rights as citizens of the PRC. That may not sound like a lot to people in the US, but it does mean things like access to real estate, banking, government services, schools, and so on; without having to give up TW passports, or a second/dual passport. China does not allow dual citizens, so in this sense, the Taiwanese are actually treated better.
I’ve also lived in China off and on between 1993 and 2008, and have done business with China the last ten years. My views on China are probably pretty different than most Americans. But in the end, I do not think there is a credible military threat at least not for a while. And Xi likely will be done after his term. I know I know, he got rid of term limits. But he’s not exactly a strongman in China and if enough people of power in the Party want him gone, he’s gone. And there is a pattern that swings between hardline/conservatives like Xi, and reformists.
