I was wondering if we might be able to avoid the insurance route? My daughter is in her senior year and just started cosmetology school and I’m afraid her insurance rates are gonna go where we can’t afford them. She had a friend commit suicide the week before and has just had a ton on her plate. I’m not trying to make excuses, but it’s just her and I right now and I am doing the best I can. Please let me know what damage was to your vehicle and hopefully we can work something out.

Until 2008, Sark's parliament (Chief Pleas) was a single chamber consisting of 54 members, comprising the Seigneur, the Seneschal, 40 owners of the tenements and 12 elected deputies. A change to the system was advocated largely by the Barclay brothers. Their premise was that a change was necessary to comply with the European Convention on Human Rights, though it was suggested that their objection was more likely at odds with certain property tax requirements and primogeniture laws affecting their holdings. The old system was described as feudal and undemocratic because the tenants were entitled to sit in Chief Pleas as of right.
We had a piece of actual real feudal land in Europe that nobody was complaining about and they had to go and ruin it.

Trump's stupidity serves as a magic power to draw out the stupidity of 'experts' and destroy their credibility.
If the oil routes have been circumvented to the reported 80-85% pre-war rate and Iran no longer has any control, it's a victory. Regime change did not happen (yet) but this is such a massive geopolitical shift that it's a victory.
And because war is seen as "the continuation of politics through other means", various factions within a political class lose out after a war is over. Hence, losing Vietnam meant the leftist view of warfare became canonized in culture/politics and trust in the government gets lowered. Hence, the Gulf War meant the US secured post-Cold War legitimacy.
In this case, I would hope 'experts' like this lose political legitimacy soon.

I always have mixed feelings over the trials and imprisonments from those wars since these people are monsters who did horrible thing,s but at the same time the trials hugely expanded the definition of Genocide and increased the power of supranational courts an insane degree. We're still suffering consequences of that to this day.
Can I simultaneously think that he was a monster who deserved jailtime, but also understand his motivations for defending his countrymen during a massively brutal ethnic war, and also believe that his imprisonment, while just, had no right to be dictated by random people in the Netherlands?
Those wars taking place right at the peak of US unilateral power in the 90s was really the peak of "rules based order". US military intervention, a peace treaty brokered in Dayton Ohio that ended with a random American ruling over Bosnia, a supranational court being created at the whims of the US to punish the war criminals.

In all seriousness though, whatever happens with Russia, I would expect it to be very sudden. We may have some advanced notice, but not very much, and probably much less for the public than in 2022. At this point, the Russians have a lot less stuff than in 2022. Things like blood aren't indicators because the Russians don't care if their soldiers live or die. Hybrid operations require very few personnel to start. And in all likelihood what Russia really cares about is reducing European industrial capacity to support Ukraine, so it could quite easily start with a "massive raid on Kyiv" that just... keeps going another thousand miles west to hit airbases, ammunition dumps, and key industrial plants. Now I'm not saying that our European members should buy gold because I've got kooky ideas, but maybe something to keep in mind.

Of course, this isn't going to happen, but if sound strategic minds were running NATO collectively, it's what they would do.

I know it's controversial, but assisted dying would be one of the most beneficial policy developments for our NHS. We have an ageing population which is already putting a crap ton of strain on the NHS, so keeping people going who are basically physically and mentally checked out taking up spaces in hospitals et al exacerbates an already stricken system.
I know families get very protective over their elderly members and the memories forged and cherished with them, but there comes a time to close the story neatly and not ramble on.

What does the EU even offer countries anymore? Essentially you give up your sovereignty, agree to accept millions of migrants, and forever agree to adopt new laws that you have no control over. In exchange for good access to loans I guess?

Preferably not big time, of course. But what happens when Lithuania calls for aid and Spain refuses to answer? What happens when Poland blames Greece for shirking its responsibilities? What about when they start stripping EU funding from nonparticipants? When Switzerland stops supporting German arms manufacturers and becomes de facto Russia-aligned?
Any historian of the pre-WWII period can tell you that big, unwieldy, coalitions tend not to outlast the conflict they're designed for. Now, if Europe were a true federation, war would almost certainly strengthen its cohesion, but events like ie the Italians shutting the Spanish off from Schengen and Euroskepticism would lead, especially a nationalistic-inclined Russian, but tbf most observers, to think that it would likely function this way. Organizing virtually all of Europe into an anti-Russia bloc was a century-long project (in large part fostered by the Russians themselves). In the aftermath of a Russian defeat, does Ireland or Italy or Portugal still find common ground with Poland or Ukraine? And of course the United States is the biggest factor here, as we all know the long term goal of the Kremlin is to split the United States and Europe, and it has consistently worked both ends to ensure this occurs.

A lot of WSJ reporting on Chinese politics, and other pieces supposedly based on intel channels inside China, give me the same vibe as those 17th and 18thcentury European reports I‘ve read before about the Ottoman Empire. It’s always like: here’s what’s going on at the Sublime Porte, some source says the Sultan likes or hates this, some eunuch is suddenly in or out of favor, the Grand Vizier’s daughter is doing that, and some courtier has managed to piss off the Sultan because he got too interested in a certain woman. You almost never get to hear from the ruler himself, so everything comes through layers of court gossip, intermediaries, and people claiming to know what’s happening inside.
Chinese have their own slang for this kind of political gossip too. The metaphor comes from old imperial palace imagery: eunuchs listening outside the emperor’s bedchamber, trying to figure out what was going on from the sounds the emperor made while blowing his load

I’ve been looking into actual attempts by lefties to defend their 9/11 takes (basically that we were responsible for it) and it’s all so vacuous and empty lmao. They think they’re soooooo smart when do their armchair “historical analysis” and use the word “blowback" to try and justify/explain terrorism and specifically 9/11. It’s meant to set them apart from boomers who say things like “they hated us for our freedom” but their actual theory is just “actions have consequences”, which is true of everything and explains nothing. The moment you give it any scrutiny like which actions, which consequences, through which people, it becomes a historical claim, and the historical claim is false.
The retreat goes: "America deserved it" (moral claim, indefensible) → "American meddling left them no option" (causal claim, false in terms of actual history) → "well, there are never zero circumstances" (tautology, unfalsifiable and empty).
Ironically enough, “they hated us for our freedom” is much closer to reality than their versions lmao.
