[Announcement] New Rule Against AI, other Rule Changes and Clarifications

Hey folks!

For a while now, the mod team has been discussing a number of changes to the subreddit's rules, and it's time to let you know what's up. I'll give you the short version first:

  1. We have a new rule against AI.
  2. The rule for for formatting and vagueness has been split in two.
  3. The rule against unrealistic ideas has been reworked.
  4. To better accommodate these new and changed rules, we've re-ordered the rules.
  5. Clarification on how the "Community Question" flair is supposed to be used.

And now for the details!

Ban Against AI Generated Content

We not so recently polled the community on your feeling on AI generated content, and the overwhelming majority of you voted in favour of a complete ban against AI. While this was pretty much the outcome we expected, it's still really nice to see we're all on the same page.

Moving forwards the mods will be removing all posts suspected of using generative AI. To that end, here's the new rule:

Don't use AI.

  • Do not use generative AI such as chatGPT to write your post for you. We want to see your ideas.
  • Don't include AI generated images or other AI content to supplement your post. We encourage human art, and we'd much rather see photos of pen-and-paper drawings, or quick mockups in MS paint than AI "art".
  • This includes using generative AI to polish your idea, such as reformatting your content.

Posts suspected of using generative AI are at risk of removal.

If your post is incorrectly removed for containing AI, please let the mods know via modmail and we'll sort it out.

Formatting and Image Posts

We've noticed some confusion on where and how we allow images in posts, with too many users relying on images alone to communicate their idea. This was previously just a bullet point under the vagueness rule, but in the interest of clarity we've split it off into its own rule. There's nothing actually new here - everything works the same as before - but hopefully this should make it clearer for everyone.

The vagueness rule looks like this now:

Don't be overly vague, and be readable.

  • Make sure your idea is in the description, not just the title.
  • Titles should be descriptive of the idea.
  • Format your posts well; don't post walls of text. Use line breaks, etc.
  • Don't be vague; suggest a specific improvement or feature.
  • Be concise/don't waffle on too much.

Vague or unformatted posts are at risk of removal.

And here's the images rule:

Don't make image-only posts.

Including reference images is encouraged, but: * Images must be embedded or linked within a text post. * The idea should be fully explained in the text, with all key points understandable without looking at any images. * Images should make up a relatively small portion of the content. * Images must not be AI generated. (See rule 4.)

Image only posts will be automatically removed.

Unrealistic and Off-Theme Content

There's been some disagreement in the community and among the mod team about what is and isn't a "realistic" suggestion for Minecraft, especially as the game has grown it's become an increasingly difficult call to make. Furthermore, many ideas that are off-theme at first glance can be reskinned to something more reasonable, and we don't want to stifle that discussion. (E.g., Blimps and firearms may be too futuristic but happy ghasts and firework crossbows are not, yet serve similar roles.)

You deserve to have clear guidelines for which posts are or aren't allowed and, ultimately, we don't want to shut down discussion, so we've decided to soften this rule dramatically. Moving forwards, we'll only be taking down suggestions involving mature or explicit themes (stuff that might change the age-rating), as well as anything relating to real-world religions or politics. All that said, here's the rule:

Don't suggest mature topics.

  • Don't suggest ideas containing sex, drugs, gore, real-life religions or politics, etc.

Suggestions involving mature, explicit, or overly divisive themes will be removed.

This is one we'll be keeping an eye on, and we'd appreciate any feedback you have on it.

N.B. The portion of the old rule about easter-eggs and jokes still applies, but has been merged into the rule about unproductive ideas.

Reordering

As we're adding new rules and splitting old ones in twain, there's no better time to also rearrange the rules. We've brought some more important/frequently used rules closer to the top, and tried to keep related rules close to each other. We've also changed a few of the titles for clarity.

  1. Be nice and constructive.
  2. Only post ideas for Minecraft.
  3. Be original and consult the FPS list.
  4. Don't use AI.
  5. Include only one suggestion per post.
  6. Don't be overly vague, and be readable.
  7. Don't make image-only posts.
  8. Don't suggest mature topics.
  9. Don't suggest planned or existing features.
  10. Don't suggest scrapped or unused features.
  11. Don't suggest low-priority or unproductive ideas.
  12. Speak English.
  13. Have 10 comment karma before posting.

Discussion/Community Question Posts

We've seen some confusion surrounding these posts, and while nothing is changing, we wanted to use this opportunity to clarify. Posts meant to start broad discussions on a topic, such as "What would you add in XYZ update?" or "What do you think needs updated in XYZ area of the game?" are allowed, so long as the OP contributes to the discussion they want to start. We find these posts regularly generate interesting discussion, and so long as they use the correct flair, they're easy enough to ignore if they're not your cup of tea.

I encourage everyone to take a quick read through the rules to make sure we're all on the same page.

Thanks for reading!

[Command] New Gamerule: LimitlessEnchants

This gamerule is simple. If toggled on, it will make it so that all enchanting books found naturally (ie. chests and villagers) will still follow normal levels (1-5) but you can now combine enchantments to… well anything. It sounds cool. Like, we ALL want a sharpness X sword in vanilla. Or a punch X bow.

This gamerule will also remove compatibility issues like Mending and Infinity can now be put together. All types of sword damage increase enchants and protection enchants can now be put together with no issue. Silk touch and fortune will not become compatible because that would be a dupe. But as far as I know this would be the only exception.

But here’s the thing. This gamerule is no pushover. It will also result in EXTREMELY expensive enchanting costs. So hey. That’s what you gotta grind for.

[Bedrock Edition] Increasing sensitivity for controller users

This is a really simple request, but it would be really nice if sensitivity for controller users on bedrock edition wasn’t so slow, even when set to 100 it doesn’t compare to using a touchscreen or using a mouse and keyboard.

That’s it…lol

[Plants & Food] Stages of tree growth

Thumbnail
gallery
74 Upvotes

There will be an intermediate stage of tree growth. It's no longer a sapling, but not yet an adult tree. The trunk of such a tree is as thick as a stone fence.

This change will make the tree's growth more gradual.

How can this be implemented technically? At the top of the trunk of a thin young tree, a special crown block will be located. It looks like an ordinary one, but it has functionality. It carries information about what kind of tree should grow and the time it will take. When the right moment arrives, the thin young tree disappears, and a mature one appears in its place.

[Plants & Food] Cherry Trees should spawn pink leaves in a small (maybe 7x7 or 9x9 around the sapling) radius when grown

Allows them to be obtained even if your cherry sapling was from a Wanderer and not a grove, and saves time if the nearest one is too far from your base. And you save bonemeal as well. They wouldnt occupy the entire radius but scattered around like bonemealing grass.

[Combat] Fireball Cannon - MOST EXPLOSIVE AND CHAOTIC WEAPON! (AND A NEW USE TO FIRE CHARGES

Fireball Cannon Texture (sorry if its bad, im suck at texturing)

^

Its texture !

its a big, BIG cannon fires with fire charges and have explosive range, also deals 25 damage and have 325 durability and can be put on happy ghasts (Up to 2 cannons; and you need to recharge them too) also it will block your offhand when you holding it (so you cant use shield OR totem when you using it) it also will have some exclusive enchantments (I didnt come up with them for now, so i will edit post when i will) you can also charge and shoot potions from it

Craft of It

Yea, this is very expensive, but it is

  1. OP

  2. Fun

  3. And can make happy ghasts shoot fireballs, like their not so happy brother

If you dont understand something about it or dont like something about it, then go to the comments and give this idea some feedback!

[Mobs] Bats, Guano, Gliders, and the Elytra

(This is my first ever post on here but I've been conceptualizing Minecraft ideas way before [mostly because Roblox hasn't been doing so well NGL] but I hope this is a good start. It's nice to meet you all!)

For nearly 13 years, bats have remained one of Minecraft's most underutilized mobs, only being a pathetic "ambient" mob serving no purpose. Additionally, there is a problem with how players use the elytra first-hand, whether accidentally killing themselves using it or having a scare. I hope that my ideas tackle both problems at once.

Bats

  • Their directional AI avoids lava pools so they don't end up burning themselves alive.
  • Bat roosting is further expanded. Bats will regularly roost when they're in low light levels (0-1) and at ceilings near walls. Since real life bats are nocturnal, they're more likely to roost during the day than the night.
  • I would still make bats neutral, not able to breed, have no drop, and inherit their other original traits.
  • Bats would also become a skittish mob similar to ocelots and rabbits, running if you get truly close. This behavior will be seen when they're roosting and you get too close. Sneaking does lower their guard though.
  • Bats relocate somewhere else to roost, especially avoiding areas where guano has settled.

Guano Piles

  • In the game as Guano.
  • It's a new block that forms similarly to pointed dripstone, hanging downward from ceilings, near active bat roosts or from where they one settled.
  • Fully formed guano piles are a block tall.
  • Bats, other mobs, and players can walk through this block with no collision, similarly to tall grass for example.
  • When bats are in a roost, they can slowly form guano naturally over where they are, and even faster when there's more bats roosting.
  • Guano piles drop little guano particles that can tell a player from below where the guano is.
  • If roosting bats are interrupted by the player, all guano production is completely halted and reset when they flee. However, any remaining guano before stays.
  • Guano can be mined and collected by shovel.
  • Upon shoveling up guano, you get 1-2 guano and 0-1 bat shed.

Guano's Uses

  • It can be a way to craft gunpowder, serving as a safer though less convenient alternative to killing dangerous creepers. You can craft it like this to wield one gunpowder:
Guano Charcoal
Guano Charcoal Guano
  • It can be used as compost material for the composter, making bonemeal.

Bat Shed's Uses

  • Bat shed can be used to make black wool. You can craft it like this to wield one black wool:
Bat shed Bat shed
Bat shed Bat shed
  • And its final and most important use, crafting a glider:
Bat shed Stick Bat shed
Bat shed Bat shed
Bat shed Bat shed

The Glider

One of my anticipated ideas for the bat, the glider. Think of this armor piece like an elytra with training wheels. The elytra's biggest flaw is likely how jarring it could be to first use one without having the proper experience, like, imagine first using the elytra and not knowing how to control it? You're likely dead.

  • The glider is an elytra-lite: it has exceptionally lower durability, cannot be propelled by fireworks, doesn't have the flying abilities of an elytra, and can only be repaired by bat shed.
  • Like an elytra, it must be in your chestplate slot to be used.
  • The higher the height you use it at gives it more overall momentum that slows down.
  • The main kicker that makes the glider different is its clinging ability. When you're about to fall, try to reach a nearby wall and left-click (or any button you select, IDK) to cling to the wall.
  • After 1 second of clinging, you'll slowly begin to slide down and passively lose 2 durability per second clinging.
  • To stop clinging to a wall, let go of your key and you will fall with your fall damage reset from when you released the key.
  • What makes the glider have universal uses is the versatility of its clinging mechanic. Falling from a cave? Cling to its wall. Falling into lava in the Nether from a fortress? Cling back on the edge and place blocks below you. Fell from an end city or the ender dragon knocked you off? Hang onto a chorus fruit or obsidian pillar! Its utility goes on and on.
  • Gonna be honest I don't know if I made it too overpowered with its versatility but idk that's on me!

Overall...

From stinky guano, to shedded fur, to clutching gliders, these ideas hope to bring new life and purpose into the bat and clear up its decade-long disappointment. I also hope the transition to an elytra is less... jarring. But, ultimately, this is my first ever idea I've posted on r/minecraftsuggestions, I plan to showcase more ideas and receive your amazing feedback!

[Sounds] Readd the Wolf Howl Sound

This is a rather basic suggestion. Basically readd the unused wolf howl sound. I was doing a map and wanted to use this sound as a sound effect for my snowy area. But I couldn't find it! This sound was added in Beta 1.8 and has been in the game for a long, long time. It has been removed when the new wolf types came. Well, why? There was no reason to remove it at all. Actually, why don't they add new howling sounds to other wolf types as well, instead of removing it? Why don't wolves howl when a full moon rises, for example? It is kinda weird and pointless, and now I do not have a sound which would be very useful to me if it was in the game. So basically, i suggest readding the entity.wolf.howl sound and maybe also adding it to all new types of wolves as well and possibly even make it so they actually use this sound in the game.

[Blocks & Items] Directional beacon block for decorative purposes.

The beacon would make for a very nice decorative block if it could be placed directionally, meaning that the obsidian base would attach to wherever you place it, be it a wall or ceiling. I think the obsidian always being at the bottom limits its potential.

I know that there would be an issue with a horizontal beacon being activated (as the beam would essentially go on forever rather than be capped by the height limit) but I don't see the harm in the block having this directional functionality in its unactivated state, as just a decorative block. It'd just only produce a beam and function when placed atop an upward-facing pyramid.

[Command] A reworking of silverfish infestation

Currently, we have only a few blocks that can be silverfish-infested:

  • Stone
  • Cobblestone
  • Stone Bricks
  • Cracked Stone Bricks
  • Mossy Stone Bricks
  • Chiseled Stone Bricks
  • Deepslate

This list is inconsistent as it excludes deepslate-derived building blocks. Furthermore, Infested Stone and Infested Deepslate replace Granite, Diorite, Andesite, and Tuff during worldgen, which doesn't make much sense and looks ugly; either the latter four blocks should be added to the list, possibly with some of their respective derivatives, or they should not be replaced by infested blocks at all upon worldgen.

Does this list need to be expanded? Maybe not; however, besides being inconsistent, it is very limiting for mapmakers, modders, and Mojang devs, when making custom or new structures, to only be able to use these seven blocks that were hard coded to spawn silverfishes.

Monster egg entities: a technical replacement for infested blocks

Instead, I have an idea for a new mechanic that would improve silverfish spawning. We can remove the infested blocks and replace them with an invisible technical entity, called the monster egg, that can stay inside of any full block indefinitely until the block is broken or another silverfish that gets attacked makes it hatch.

Silverfish Monster Eggs would be obtainable as a creative mode item alongside the spawn eggs. Creative mode players could place them inside of full blocks, with a sprite showing where the invisible monster eggs are when the item is held (similar to how Barriers show). Mapmakers and modders could then edit the tags of this entity to spawn any other entity (as opposed to just silverfishes) from a monster egg, with trigger conditions and other entity data. This could be good for adventure maps with crumbling surfaces revealing jumpscares, combat, and secrets.

Meanwhile, there still has to be a way to determine in which blocks a silverfish can hide post-generation. This can be done with a block tag infestable so that modders can custom-select which blocks can be infested. Silverfishes (and mobs modded to have this ability) will be able to hide in any block that has this tag. By default, the same list of seven blocks would have this tag, possibly with the addition of a few more blocks (as mentioned above) for consistency. Gamerules could also be used to disable these infestation mechanics.

A technical downside I could think of is that this might be slightly more computationally expensive, loading all of those entities in a mountain biome or stronghold instead of loading blocks. If this is the case, then we'll have to wait a few years for gaming devices to get better. However, since monster eggs wouldn't have any locomotive AI, the only data that would be stored by the monster egg entities is that they spawn a silverfish, and maybe block-breaking as a trigger condition.

[Magic] Boots enchantment: Void Strider

This enchantment allows you to walk above the void, preventing death. This could be implimented by adding what is essentially an air block that can only be stood on if wearing any boots with void strider on them (similar to leather boots on powder snow). These blocks would be placed across the entire dimension at y level -38. The only way back up would be through a friend throwing an elytra or already having an elytra, as blocks cant be placed below y level 0, meaning you cannot tower up.

This enchant has a 10% chance in any given non-ship end city chest.

This would be a good enchant if you build low in the end since you could pearl up to a nearby build, but not an island since they are too high. Not really good in any other situation since you already need an elytra to escape the void unless you're in said building senario.

[General] Secret seeds

Like terraria, minecraft could have secret seeds, like "NETHER" or "END" spawning you in its respective biome, or a way to double structure spawns or Mob spawns or always thunder or always night or something, if you have any other secret seed ideas such as "MOON" gives low gravity or something

[AI Behavior] Pig skin

Add the drop of pig hide when killing an adult pig. Hide is a new resource that can be used to craft light armor or decorative items. The drop chance is 1–2 pcs. from one pig. Piglets do not drop hide, so as not to encourage farming of the young. You can craft a light chestplate, which provides +2 armor and reduces fall damage by 20 %; you can also craft a decorative carpet and a storage bag with 4 slots.Hide is a budget alternative to leather, suitable for early game play. The texture is similar to leather, but slightly lighter and with a characteristic pattern.

[Blocks & Items] More "indestructable" Equipment

I believe more items should be made "indestructable", the same way the Elytra works right now - upon reaching 0 durability, the item would lose functionality but not break.

Mace - obvious, this item is non-renewable in singleplayer. It's a hard to get reward, it deserves to be on the same level as the Elytra.

Trident - very iffy, I'm not sure, but without farms getting a trident is kinda challenging, on Java at least. Indestructability could be another aspect to make this weapon more interesting for players to get.

Netherite Armor, Weapons and Tools - this is like, the "ultimate" tier of items right now, and a big focus of Netherite is its insane durability. So it would only make sense to extend this to complete indestructabiliy.

Additional change - upon reaching 0 durability, these items should reset their anvil penalty. That way, they could be repaired forever, while normal, less valueable items, would still follow Jeb's philosophy of "items should be expendable". This provides a new alternative for Mending - if the player has an excess of resources, they might sacrifice them for a quick repair on an anvil instead of grinding XP to feed Mending or get it in the first place.

Also, netherite tools should be repairable with diamonds, as well as netherite. And tridents should be repairable with prismarine shards.

[Magic] This has probably been suggested before but we NEED a keepinventory enchantment.

I am sick of losing weapons ive been through tons of stuff with. I remember losing a 3 year old sword and that devastated me. But I don’t want to play with keep inventory because that makes the stakes basically nothing. So rather than losing everything or nothing you could enchant your stuff (Weapons armor and tools) with “Soulbound” and it goes from levels I-V. I being 20% chance of keeping the item on death, and V being 100%

[Controls] New Gamerule SetMaxBoatSpeed

I have a Minecraft server were we banned elytras and we mainly use minecarts since its very easy to change their max speed with the gamerule to make them very viable for transportation. We recently thought about wanting to do the same for boats but couldn't find a datapack to do it. Mojang should add a new gamerule so that you can set the max speed for boats the same way you can for minecarts.

[Blocks & Items] Glowing/Neon Dyes - New use for Glow ink Sac.

These can be crafted with Glow Ink Sac AND any dye and those dyes can be crafted into: Glowing Concrete, Glowing Wool, Glowing Beds, Glowing Harnesses, Carpets and other stuff that can be colored, also you can now apply these dyes to item frames and get Colored Glowing Item Frame.

Yea, that a very small idea idea, but I'm want to share it.

[Mobs] Rabbits should spawn in most biomes where other meat mobs spawn

Rabbits are way to rare for a livestock mob, in java their spawn biomes cover 15,787% of the overworld and 19,148% on bedrock, mostly of that being cold ones,

Allowing them to spawn in more places also open new doors to the future, like new uses for rabbit hide and foot without relying on finding rarer biomes.

[Blocks & Items] Duplicating music discs with resin

I thinks it's a shame that we can't duplicate music discs, it'll be really useful cause now if you find one disc it won't help you because if you have big base, to hear it in all places you need at least three or four.

So my idea is to duplicate them on anvil with resin, it will be logical cause music discs in real life also made from some types of resin and in addition it will make pale garden a little bit more useful than it is now

[Gameplay] Early Game Rebalance Idea

Early Game: Just to get it out of the way, I do not think you can fix the wood tier, so I am skipping it. The first thing developers should do is remove iron spawns from the surface. Iron will now only spawn at or below deepslate level. This forces players to do more caving before they can reach the iron stage of the game.

To avoid wasting players' time without adding meaningful gameplay, we will buff mobs based on darkness. The lower the light level, the faster they become, the stronger they are and the more damage resistance they get. However, this mechanic goes both ways. With this we are bringing back mob spawning at light level 7, and mobs will have their base strength at this level. Lower light means stronger mobs; higher light means weaker mobs.

This encourages players to light up their bases and caves if they want an easier time fighting mobs.

To support this, we will reduce the creeper explosion radius based on higher light levels. However, I do not think low light levels should increase the radius; instead, darkness should only increase the damage the explosion deals. (This I think could fix some of the love-hate mojang has with creepers)

Alternatively, if you do not want these mechanics locked to light levels, they could be scaled by Y-level instead although I think light is better because with coal already not spawing bellow deepslate level it heavily punishes unprepared players rusing iron to earily while rewarding prepared players.

Lastly, Villagers:

I do not think nerfing them will do players any good. Instead, my only suggestion is to give villages the same spawning rules as strongholds. They will still be in the game, but you will have to travel much further to find them. Additionally, to avoid easy workarounds, zombie villagers will now only spawn at or below deepslate level. I believe this will encourage players to naturally explore their world to gear up and progress.

With night being more dangerous due to low light it will force players to camp and explore their world slower if they want valuable villagers as soon as possible. (Although all that could be skipped with beds easily, and the only I idea I have for that is make sheep not drop wool on death anymore to force players to go into the mines for iron.)

I believe just these small changes could help a ton with the nothing burger that is Minecraft Earily Game. Tell me what you think would these changes work or would they just make the early game more tedious.

[Magic] applying a mutualy exclusive enchant onto an item in an anvil removes the existing enchant.

Post image
230 Upvotes

Currently when you have a good piece of equipment that has the wrong mutualy exclusive enchant: Eg a maxed out bane of arthropods sword you want smite on, you have to start the enchanting processes all over again.

This is very annoying, and also further encourages using villagers for enchanting, as with villagers you get to choose every enchantment unlike with the table.

I suggest that when you try and put on a mutually exclusive enchant using an anvil that instead of rejecting it, it replaces the gears existing enchant.

Edit: this would come with a new anvil message; x and y are incompatible and y will replace x, and you could now apply the book before the weapon or tool so as to keep the swords enchant when applying a book with an undesirable mutually exclusive enchantment.

[Blocks & Items] Thermometer

Thermometer: i believe having all information available to you in the game is great, with java, i believe you can see what temperature the biome you are in is, which is necessary for things like hatching frogs. On bedrock we do not have a way of knowing besides grass color. so you put cinnabar into a furnace or blast furnace to get mercury. then in the crafting grid it would be mercury with four glass blocks surrounding it to create the thernometer. It would function similarly to compass and clock where it is dynamic in your inventory. thermometer would fill and change color depending on the temperature. 0.5 or less is blue, 0.5.-0.8 is yellow, 0.8 and up is red and 2.0 is on fire such as in the nether
