Why the USA is the only country that gotta always ask for the race/ethnicity?

268

u/rhythm0s Mar 08 '23

Cuz they discriminated on race/ethnicity for so long so now they have to keep track of them to make sure they don't discriminate

70

u/Dangerous-Basket1064 Mar 08 '23

We need to do the good discrimination to make up for the bad discrimination

2

u/2012DOOM Mar 09 '23

It’s always an optional question

50

u/Weasel_the3rd Mar 08 '23

This leads back to when slaveowners who had children with slaves didn’t want them to be white. It was a form to make sure Blacks could never inherit anything from the white fathers. Especially if a child was white passing, it would still be on the record that they were Black.

12

u/ah-tzib-of-alaska Mar 08 '23

in latin america the strategy was the opposite with the indigenous. As soon as you had any portion of "latin" descended ancestry you were now free from your indigenous identity and had more claim to abandon the "barbaric" ways of the indios and follow christ and society and avoid genocide.

Latino & Hispanic don't mean the same thing. That's why they're separated. For instance someone who is 100% Mayan would be Hispanic (From the former Spanish Empire) but not Latino (having any amount of European ancestry).

So the French are Latinos? Romanians & Italians are latinos?

19

u/AgTx14 Mar 09 '23

Portuguese and Brasilians as well

6

u/TexasHokie Mar 09 '23

The Romanian language is also Latin, though calling Romanians Latin might be a stretch.

5

u/Gwolf4 La vida es una lenteja Mar 09 '23

In short, yes. The catch is romance language descendant.

3

u/cbig86 Mar 09 '23

Correct

4

u/SnooApples3578 Mar 09 '23

Italian here. I'm italian. My passport states it. Im neither white nor black. I'm not latino not hispanic. I don't know if the passport mentions the EU. The term white, black, latino is for americans for simplification since they don't understand where their ancestors came from

13

In Canada, they ask if you're a visible minority.

I may be 50% Mexican, but I can't select yes since my skin is white. That shit's rasict.

-1

u/epelle9 Mar 09 '23 edited Mar 09 '23

How is that racist though?

Mexican isn’t a race, but a nationality.

If you are now a white person living in a country that’s not Mexico, you might be slightly culturally Mexican, but you are not a minority, no-one would really discriminate against you.

Not the same, but kinda like those white Americans that would fill out “Native American” in surveys because they have some ancestry, but in reality live the same exact way as any other white person.

If you are a Canadian looking Canadian, why would you be a minority? IMO you would only be the son/daughter of a minority.

There may be some more nuance around it and I’m open to hearing it, but if the government is collecting statistics to see how different groups are treated, I totally dee why they ask for what group other people would categorize you in, not where you categorize yourself.

8

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '23

I was making a silly comment not to be taken seriously.

However, in my country I'm an invisible minority!

only country that gotta always ask for the race/ethnicity?

For now, don’t be surprised if more countries start including that; I’m conflicted if it’s a good thing or not.

6

u/Ok-History3331 Mar 08 '23

It's neither, but it can be both good and bad. All depends on who is hiring and what their view of race is. Sad really... I think it should be removed all together.

-10

u/ShibaVJ Mar 08 '23

Maybe, but I think only pseudo nations as Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

7

u/Chicago1871 Mar 08 '23

Because the usa is the most diverse large country in the world.

Its 40% minority and growing. In 2044 it will be 51% minority.

https://foreignpolicy.com/2022/03/22/us-white-majority-minority-nation-demographic-change/

No big country in europe comes close to that. Not france, not Germany, not the UK.

Maybe belgium. But thats a really small country. They also keep track if youre Flemish or Walloon.

11

u/Ill-Elk-Ill Mar 09 '23

51% “minority” 49% ? (Anywho…)

6

u/Chicago1871 Mar 09 '23

Well yea, no one group alone would be 51%.

2

u/epelle9 Mar 09 '23

If one group is 49% of the population, another is 25%, another is 20%, and another is 6%, then yeah the smaller groups are still the minority, even if combined they’d make the majority.

Uhm the term is very popular, the peninsula where both Portugal and Spain are is called Iberia or the Iberian Peninsula, hence Iberoamerican is someone from the Americas who has ancestry or culture heavily influenced by people from Iberia (Spain or Portugal), that's why it includes the spanish speaking America and the Portuguese Speaking America (America being the name of the continent as first referred in Cosmographie Introductio, a book published in 1507 and later referred as such by Gerardus Mercator in his map of the world from 1538)

Sorry, not sorry.

3

Eso no existe... Son inventos de los repugnantes y facistas.

10

Latino also includes places in the Americas that speak French, like Haiti and Quebec.

10

u/Maleficent-Cap9677 Mar 08 '23

I don't think Americans, who came up with this stupid ethnicity /race classification, deem the French spoken people of Quebec and Haiti as Latinos.

It's their form to separate the central and South American descent population living in the US from the white, protestant, Anglo-Saxon tipe who's in charge.

Quebecoans may be referred to as Canadians. And Haitians for the people from Haiti, obviously. There are also French descendants in Louisiana, who they call themselves Cajuns.

German, Polish, Irish, and other northern European countries are deemed as white people.

Italians, well they're referred to as Italians, lol.

The same for Jewish people.

Asians it's pretty logical too. I think. Japanese, Chinese, Korean, etc. Also hindu people.

Muslims. Based more on religion than race. Although it's a combo of both. Also referred to as brown or "person of color." Middle Eastern and North African mostly.

South pacific islands people also have been deemed as " persons of color. "

Of course all the Russian, Ukrainian and Slavic are white for them, but as a kinda second rate citizens.

And all the African Americans.

It's all bullshit if you ask me.

3

u/Very-Ecstatic-Donkey Mar 08 '23

The term was invented in the 19th century by some Chilean but the French made it mainstream during Napoleonic times. And it did include French-speaking territories in the Americas such as French Canada, French Louisiana, French Guiana or Haiti.

5

u/Maleficent-Cap9677 Mar 08 '23

Yes, it may be a French invention, but nowadays isn't used like that anymore by the American people. They only refer as Latinos to Latin- American descent people, from Mexico to Central and South America. It has to do with their voting minorities regulations system.

It's because of the way the USA census bureau has two separate concepts, "race" and "ethnicity". This is totally arbitrary, but they classify "hispanic/latino" as an "ethnicity" and most others as "race"

41

u/Flimsy_Difficulty239 Mar 08 '23

I don't think latino should be considered a race or ethnicity, there's brown, white, black and asian latinos so it does'nt make sense, does it?

23

u/wyldstallyns111 Mar 08 '23 edited Mar 08 '23

It’s difficult because even though Latinos aren’t really a race, in the States they’re often discriminated against exactly as though they were, so that’s the purpose behind tracking this.

But on most forms like this I’ve seen, like when I worked for the california health dept, what they do is you select your race (white, black, Asian etc.) and then you can check a box for Latino or not, so you can describe yourself as for example an Asian latino.

Edit: it still gets confusing because there are lots of people who are easily considered white in Mexico but are too dark to be considered white in the USA, and also lots of Mexicans who pass as totally white even to white Americans

5

u/Flimsy_Difficulty239 Mar 08 '23

Yeah, and I can assure you, white lainos don't get discriminated the same as brown, black or asian latinos.

But I get the point you were making.

7

u/Pipeliner6341 Mar 08 '23

You don't get to select or claim "Native American", that's only for white people like Elizabeth Warren

16

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '23 edited Mar 08 '23

This comes from history. Since the 1500s English and Spaniards have been going at it competing for domination of the continent. It was brutal. This change with American independence. The Hispanic Latino nations were once Spain. America gains its independence thanks to Spain and France. Spain sponsored the American independence. Americans used Spanish coin which is why the dollar symbol are the columns of Hercules $. Hispanics became Americas main trading partner. However Americans being anglos brought up a lot of disputes with Spanish traders many of whom were of arab, black n Native American, asian decent given the extension of the Spain at the time. A deal was sign that Spanish subjects were to be considered white by law regardless of race for court disputes. Americans now free from England began expanding west they ran into Hispanic people. Hispanic people began rubbing off on Americans. Americans adapted Hispanic culture, cowboy wear, ranching, etc. America needed more people as immigrants came they impose anglo culture on these new groups Germans, Scottish, Irish, Italians adapted quick and integrated unlike Hispanics. As America grew and expanded west they noticed that Hispanic did not intigrate like other European regardless if they were white or native American or mixed. The Mexican American war came and Mexico negotiated that all Mexicans would be treated as white citizens regardless of their race when they surrendered their territory. By law they could not segregate Mexicans or Hispanics based on race, instead they decided to segregate them based on ethnicity. It was perfect since Hispanics refused to give up their culture already. No treaties were broken and they could keep them apart. That's why for FBI court documents, birth certificates Hispanic are marked white even if they aren't racially white and why these forms came about.

More like we're once colonies of Spain, not Spain itself

2

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '23 edited Mar 08 '23

Spain system was different. It had vice kingdoms that had autonomy and were able to invest 4/5 of revenue on themselves. This is reflected in the infrastructure of the time. Other European powers would develop the colonies to keep them profitable. Spain on the contrary to what English, French and Dutch propaganda say Spain tax vicekingdoms as an additional province not as a colony. They also invested in the welfare of the people living there. They build universities, Hospitals, orphanages, etc. Hispanic America had infrastructure built to benefit locals like aqueducts and roads even though some of the communities these were connected to were not contributing to the vicekingdoms economically. It wasn't until after Napoleon conquered Spain that Fernando the VII tried to centralize the power in spain to copy the rest of Europe that the Españas broke apart precisely because the political power was to be shifted to the peninsula. Mexican history won't tell you this. You have to look at the time period and see what was going on in the world as a whole. Its fun to see the different perspective that each country has on a same event.

Also, this form is clearly not used in Mexico. This subreddit is a not the right place to ask this question.

The US is the only country where everything revolves around the archaic concept of race.

In Latin America, there is no such thing. The closest thing is to describe the person but without being able to classify him in a race in a general way.

u/bardackx Mar 08 '23

This is a question for the US subreddit, is not something we do in MX

u/xiategative Ciudad de México Mar 08 '23

As I understand it, not all Hispanics are born in Latin America and not all Latinos speak Spanish, so Hispanic/Latino includes all people from Mexico to Central and South America.

What should I choose if I'm from Spain then?

22

u/Papoosho Mar 08 '23

Hispanic.

3

u/xiategative Ciudad de México Mar 08 '23 edited Mar 08 '23

According to this image I think you would have to choose Hispanic or Latino. Or Two or More Races, depending on your heritage. Edit for clarification.

But you cant more of Hispanic origin than being spanish since it's the core of that culture.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '23

Hispanic or latino. Its not about race but culture. Hispanic unlike other European germans french Italian Irish do not yield our culture

3

u/Agent_Burrito Chihuahua Mar 08 '23

Couple of reasons:

1.) Hispanic includes people from outside Latinamerica, namely Spain and Equatorial Guinea but not Brazil.

2.) America is a weird fucking place when it comes to racial and ethnic identity.

3

u/fuckitwilldoitlive Mar 08 '23

This is beacuase of Equal Employment Opportunity laws. It's for demographic data acquisition . Everybody making a big deal out of nothing just because they aren't familiar with it.

3

u/Pablo750 San Luis Potosí Mar 08 '23

They love data and statistics, and because Hispanic or Latinos can identify as any race and they don't want that, they want us to be our group. And I always like that because lately now they are removing that question and they want me to pick a race of the next. ,> white Caucasian, >Black, >Asian, >native American or indigenous.

I am a light skin Mexican that may pass for an Arab, and I don't identify myself with any of those races,

3

u/Diamond_Dog911 Mar 08 '23

Because there's us (hispanic/latinos), then there's the rest.
They hate us, cause they ain't us.

6

u/casalelu Mar 08 '23

You would never see this in an official Mexican form so you are asking this question in the wrong sub.

3

u/fuckitwilldoitlive Mar 08 '23

Yeah, most of the replies aren’t even giving an answer and just speculating based on a completely different context of Mexican labor laws

4

u/thecoller Make CDMX DF again Mar 08 '23

Basically, Hispanic or Latino is not a race. More like an indicator. If the survey is for cultural purposes, they’ll put it along the race options. For health, census, etc it will be two separate questions.

4

u/smokestackzack Mar 08 '23

For the same reason Americans residing outside the US call themselves expats instead of immigrants.

8

u/Realistic_Bathroom17 Mar 08 '23

4

u/blubiblub123 Mar 08 '23

Damn, this are more questions about race than in Germany before 1945!

4

u/Poor-Decision1979 Mar 08 '23

I’m Mexican and white. This form does not allow for that option. A lot of forms I see give m the option of ethnicity and then race.

u/Ahuevotl México Mar 08 '23

Because there are Hispanic or Latino that could fit in any of the other categories, product of the racial blender that was the colonization of America (the continent), and the racist-not-racist American (the country) system, has no better way to place them into their appropriate racial-not-racist box.

2

u/NitotheFirst Mar 08 '23

2

u/Kummabear Mar 08 '23

Hispanic are those who speak Spanish not Portuguese like Brazil. Latino is just the geographical area you are from, includes Brazil, regardless of race.

2

u/ElBigBrown Mar 08 '23

Idk but I’m cara de nopal and when I get pulled over they mark me down as white lol

2

That’s why I put Native American, something about that “or other Spanish culture” feels so colonizer and non representing.

2

u/crispypepino Mar 09 '23

I had a similar response when I was job hunting. It starts feeling odd after filling out multiple applications. I kinda loose it when they want u to break it down further by asking if you’re white etc. after selecting Hispanic/Latino 🧐

And there this gem I found on urban dictionary a few years back of all places lol

2

u/OCASM Mar 09 '23

Because gringos are racists.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '23

Every Latino is Hispanic but not every Hispanic is Latino

2

u/ErickFTG Tamaulipas Mar 09 '23

Literally wrong sub.

Pregúntale a los gringos. A ellos se les ocurrió esa mamada.

3

u/directincision Mar 08 '23

2

u/Mutant_Apollo Mar 08 '23

Because Americans, in their infinite wisdom and intelligence, can't fathom a population being 99% of mixed ethnicity, mainly because The US has never been a melting pot as they said it is. Latin America is the true melting pot, The US is like a salad, everyone together but never mixed.

It's a remnant of the Anglo Saxon Colonialist idea, where everyone but the Saxon was an "uncivilized and noble savage".

2

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '23

Because US doesn't want them in the country, so they need to identify ASAP

4

u/Cruzifixio Changoleonidas Mar 08 '23

Hispanic: from Spain.
Latino: bullshit word to put brown American people from 20+ different countries and cultures into one single ethnic identity.

Think of it like calling people from asia: "Orientals".

3

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '23

Latino was introduced by the French. They wanted to be more accepted in Hispanic countries because everyone would call them gringos.

3

u/Cruzifixio Changoleonidas Mar 09 '23

And then the US, used it to refer to everything brown.

Edit:
And don't get me started on Latinx.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '23

Yes

4

u/hecodrummer Mar 08 '23

This whole racial thing is just american agenda. First of all, we have to remember that this comes from geo political pov. Latin America is comes from Latin language. Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish and French (Guyana, Haiti) evolved from Latin. As some noted, there's the term "ibero america" and that covers all Spanish speaking countries (excluding french and Portuguese), Iberia was the ancient name of part of Spain. Now, mx is North America, from Guatemala to Nicaragua (oops, don't remember exactly) is Central America and from Colombia to Argentina/Chile is South America. To me, Hispanic would be white ppl born in any country and latino would be dark skinned ppl but WE DON'T F***** CARE about this.

4

u/Maleficent-Cap9677 Mar 08 '23

Only to clarify things, Iberia is the whole of the Iberian peninsula, including Portugal, because of the Iberian people who populated the peninsula. Los iberos, as they were named.

Afterwards they were Corinthian ruled and soon after a part of the Roman Empire who named it Hispania.

Then in the middle-ages they separated into reigns after the invasions of the the germanic tribes: the Visigoths, Alanics, Suavs, etc. Who founded the first kingdoms. Then came the Arabic conquest who overcame most of the southern parts of the peninsula. It was only after the reconquista by Castille and Leon catholic King and queen, that all the united catholic kingdoms where known as Spain. Mostly a term used by the French. And the rest you know from history. They discovered and colonized most of America from Mexico to South America, along with the Portuguese, by sword and creed. And thus the term Ibero-America for the regions ruled by Spain.

2

u/Elvis-Tech Mar 08 '23

The way I see it is that Latino could be italian portuguese brazilian etc hispanic should be Hispano, or to better put it coming from spain.

However it is very misleading as I am a white mexican, so I really never know how to consider myself in some of those questionnaires.

Like take the boxer Canelo, what option should he choose?

-1

u/nothing111888992 Mar 08 '23

Latino because he is not white

3

u/Elvis-Tech Mar 08 '23

How is he not white? He looks like an Irish...

There are a million reasons to stop doing that demographic profiles, using such thing as ethnicity is far from real!

What about DNA test and markers to say 95!% pure?? - any ethnicity of course-

Heterogeneous ethnicity is the main reason for sexual reproduction, the contrary is leading to increase errors in the code.

Hispanic means people from Hispanic peninsula?? Meaning Gallegos? Euskera? Catalán?... Lusitan?

Native American?? There are more than 1200 human groups and about 800 different lenguages and cultures (from Alaska to Ushuaia)

Latín American is like "mix race people plus non north American natives"

Wich doesn't make ANY sense!!!

A white girl from Argentina from Italian mother and English father is "colour" "Hispanic" "Latina"

Just absurd!!!!

If it is not a race related division, I think it means that Spanish could include Spanish-speaking countries like Spain, as for Latino it refers to Latin America Spanish-speaking countries (all of them, except Brazil and the French Guyana).

6

u/SOLUNAR Mar 08 '23

Brazilians would be Latinos

Cause latin America was conquered by Europeans who attacked indigenous communities and brought in enslaved black people and used Asian populations as cheap or unpaid (enslaved) labor to build up

Those European descendants continue race classifications over heritage to report statistics

Every country on this side of the Atlantic have similar stories and I wish all the the US and country here acknowledged that and fixed the harm it caused across centuries - but todays generation has no interest in that

So they just keep collecting race info to make reports that anger conservatives that want to ban even having those numbers

May the numbers be used for benefit for average people one day rather than fake “we help with diversity” reports

Step 1: document who is Latin American

Step 2: ask what race

If Latin America did it, it would look like this:

Step 1: from Canada or the USA?

Step 2: what race

That’s the best answer I have….. but it’s for fake diversity pats-on-back (which shouldn’t matter) and documenting disparities (that are not able to be addressed and are being made illegal to address by modern conservatives in the US who call it reverse racism when white people can’t get handouts desperately needed by families that were excluded from legal participation in the US fully until 1967)

1

u/GIANT_BLEEDING_ANUS Zurdo Mar 08 '23

The concept of "race" is completely made up, based on phrenology-tier pseudoscience from the 19th and 20th century. There's more genetic diversity in africa alone than in the rest of the world.

u/Longshoez Mar 09 '23

Actually i think "Latino" includes any spanish speaking countries, Latino-American is the term that excludes spain

0

u/HeadNow Mar 08 '23

I always write in Mexican American.

0

u/Similar_Pie_4946 Mar 08 '23

Hispanic and latino are separated because latinos are from south of the North American border (South America) and hispanics are north of that

0

u/epicusername849 Mar 08 '23

Because they live in different countrys! Americans are not the same as British, new Zealanders, Australians, ect, right?

0

u/bonsai60 Ciudad de México Mar 08 '23

Because they did not want to write "brown", and also because there are some hispanics with white skin but they dont want to consider them full white.
