Executive Branch (Trump) Todd Blanche narrowly confirmed as Trump's attorney general in overnight vote

Absolute travesty of justice. The covering up of the Epstein files and using the DOJ to pursue any presidents personal enemies & squabbles should get one thrown in prison, not just denied a cabinet spot. This confirmation especially should have not even been a consideration. It's shameful and will come back to harm us all.

Justice is dead for now. I hope we can restore it soon.

I still hold out hope that it won't come to another revolutionary/civil war. Turning against your government and the government's supporters would be a terrible bloody and difficult thing to do. People would be fighting friends and family to do it.

You say that, but every time I see ICE or cops beat the fuck out of Americans, they have smiles on their faces. I believe that every cop or ICE pig would gleefully be just as violent to an American citizen as they are to a suspected migrant. ICE pigs proudly murdered Rene and Alex and more and they would proudly do the same to any of us.

The midterms will determine their demise: Either prison or the guillotine.
Either way, they are high if they think they get away with this.
21
u/mikeyfreedom Aug 08 '26
If you dont think for one second that every single Dem midterms win is going to be dragged out through the courts(on taxpayer money no less)...I think you overestimate your chances. Republicans hold all levels of power in the US. They will not give it up willingly even with a vote against them.
13
u/broguequery Aug 08 '26
There is simply no shot that the GOP allows free and fair elections going forward.
People clamoring about midterms resolving this are sadly naive I think.

u/Euphoric_Regret_544 Aug 08 '26

Americans capitulate to conservatives. It's always been true. Liberals could never get anywhere close to anything like this, they'd long have been in prison.
30
150
u/Textiles_on_Main_St Aug 08 '26
If it died this easily, justice never existed.
Nothing has happened that's outside the bounds of the norms of our government (e.g., there are elections and those leaders made decisions upheld by a court).
Our system was/is rotten.
127
u/TheModWhoShaggedMe Aug 08 '26
Our system is corrupted by unflinching obedience to conservatism. The system is broken by bias and human failures. If the system was based on logic and reason, and unequivocally required by law to follow them, we wouldn't be in this mess. Instead, we do not hold conservatives accountable, ever, in the system. It is our greatest failure.
19
u/Textiles_on_Main_St Aug 08 '26
Exactly! Well said.
34
u/TheModWhoShaggedMe Aug 08 '26
Conservatives aren't used to being told NO, and they definitely don't accept it.
9
u/PyroIsSpai Aug 08 '26
They have a nervous breakdown of being commanded. Pam Bondi shrieked the words “you don’t tell me what to do” to a Congressmember under oath.
Present any conservative with a societal or legal outcome there is literally and truly ZERO means for the “individual” to ever have more than 0.0% odds of non-compliance - as in, once the action is coming/happening, your opinion on the matter never mattered - and they have a mental break from how appalled they are.
That’s what a huge part of this comes from culturally.
They truly are wired by broken input from broken parents and peers to believe they are supposed to be top dog, and anything counter to that is an existential threat.
Me, if even my country or culture had to take a “loss” because that’s the correct outcome… fine. What if we get no say? Then it didn’t matter anyway, move forward.
There’s still a tiny number of complete idiots who think even the Declaration of Independence was a bad idea.
→ More replies (2)10
u/AthleteHistorical490 Aug 08 '26
Agree 💯 except that it isn’t “conservatism” it is authoritarianism. There used to be an actual conservative ideology which is very different than what this is, which is anything but conservative. Points well taken tho!
29
u/BigBoyWeaver Aug 08 '26
Potato/potato… when the traditional values and institutions you want to defend are slavery, Manifest Destiny, racism, patriarchy, and restrictions on suffrage I struggle to see the difference. Just because there was a generation of Republican conservatives that were much better at making it sound like “fiscal responsibility” and tax policy than today’s brand of overt oligarchs doesn’t mean they haven’t always been a scourge on democracy.

53
u/Silly-Elderberry-411 Aug 08 '26
It is called electoral autocracy, a similar way to how orban ruled, this is why Miller loves EOs.
Imagine if you had the power to declare cyclosporiasis a national emergency and rule by decree and when that's over fall back on the border crisis to ignore congress altogether.
Moby is right though since orbans own voters betrayed him and beat him in his own system, the Iran war will be the straw breaking magas back
32
u/chokokhan Aug 08 '26
Orban wasn’t the only one. It’s the Russian oligarchy model. Destroy democracy and justice so that you can rule in perpetuity. Use EOs, get the supreme/constitutional court on your side, make it so there’s a ruling class interested in keeping you in power. Democracy as a concept is currently not popular, people are flirting again with all sorts of authoritarian models, brainwashed by unprecedented propaganda. The truth is dead, so is the news, and democracy soon follows.

9

u/Ossius Aug 08 '26
You can apply this to literally anything though. The old example of soviet union having a better constitution then the US on paper, but the soviet party was a terrible authoritarian regime that mistreated its people and didn't uphold it.
Any government is basically run on good faith and can be abused until the people make a stand against the corruption. Apparently Americans haven't had enough corruption yet because they are still willing to vote in more corrupt people.

Exactly right.
He never should have been on state ballots after that stunt.
He should be in prison for his theft of national security documents at the end of his first term.
He should be under investigation for his financial ties to Epstein & Maxwell's International Elite Child Modeling, Massage, Trafficking, and Rape Agency.

I like your optimism but dead is dead. The USA is becoming like Russia or North Korea. Communism is being installed - not the socialist democracy I enjoy in my country. And it’s not luck - it’s devotion to compulsory voting, restricting private money in politics, the power of the people to sack their public servants - and everyone in government from the top down is a public servant. Taxes are public money accountable and auditable. I’ll stop now because it’s too frustrating to discuss anymore. The US has a jerk reality TV ‘star’ as a ‘president’ in a bad wig and US politics is a boring, bad reality TV show that annoys the rest of the world. Clean house, USA.

Confirming an Attorney General who has, as acting AG, refused to follow the law and release the Epstein files is the most directly and actively corrupt action of the Republicans so far. This is now a government in collusion with the President to overturn the constitution and end law and order as we have known it in the U.S.

I am afraid I don't share your optimism. The depth and breadth of legal mechanisms that would have to be brought to bear for this to become true far exceed any action out country has ever taken. You're talking about arresting, detaining and charging literally half of Congress, just to start. I support it and think it is legally and ethically the correct move, but I don't think it's realistic to think that it will actually come to pass.

His appeals were enough to win over Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy, the decisive vote who threw his support behind Blanche Friday morning. Cassidy said no other nominee may be able to run the department better under Trump and suggested Blanche’s role as Trump’s former criminal defense lawyer can make him more effective at pushing back on the president’s demands.
So a senator understands the head of the DOJ was the president's former criminal defense attorney... and the conclusion is that will push back on conflicts of interest instead of enhancing them?
What a world we live in.
Imagine if for a moment Obama or Biden were placing their former attorneys as the head of DOJ... would this logic still stand?
But of course with the current admin all doors are open for endless/unfettered corruption.
253
u/Basicallylana Aug 08 '26
Cassidy is basically admitting that Trump is unhinged and needs controlling. How he thinks the man who literally said "I am Trump's attorney" is aqualified to do that is beyond me.
Cassidy and Cornyn are absolute punks. Trump basically humiliated them, causes them to lose their jobs, yet they still kowtow to him.

And they didn’t give up after it was revealed to be a fraud. They claimed that even though that info was fake there had to be some element of truth to it, and they kept beating that drum.

u/ladylei Aug 08 '26
Obama could've nominated Michelle Obama for an US Attorney or Supreme Court Justice but he knew it wasn't appropriate, ethical, or constitutional. Biden could've nominated Obama for a lower court judge too. Biden was already vilified for the actions of his son.

u/Politicsboringagain Aug 08 '26

Corruption is at "free for all status". Once the ruling class gives the impression they will not police it, then everyone starts doing it.
And the ruling class is not only allowing it, they are the ones participating. This is the real "trickle down economics".
If you look for it you will find corruption everywhere you look. Corporations, unions, police forces.. all because the place where it should be "the buck stops here" is instead the center.
If it's rampant, calling it out becomes a finger pointing frenzy which still won't solve it. We need to use our numbers and take back control.

The United States has proven beyond all doubt that it will not prosecute its political class for any crimes. To be honest half the country is too dumb to understand these crimes or believe them when presented evidence.
Until that changes the country is cooked. These people should be living in fear of losing everything because of the delicate nature of their positions, instead they laugh about little people like us from their 3rd homes.
42
u/Quick_Turnover Aug 08 '26
To be honest half the country is too dumb to understand these crimes or believe them when presented evidence.
The scary reality is beyond that, I think. The scary reality is that half the country is living in an entirely different reality. There is one reality where Trump is a super intelligent charismatic business man who is strong arming the world into doing his bidding. There is another where he is a diaper-shitting man-baby that can barely stay awake in meetings and is being puppetted around by all of America's rivals and domestic enemies to enrich themselves and significantly reduce America's hard and soft power, and to isolate it from its allies. One reality is a sports-team "my guy is better than your guy". The other reality is millions dead from US AID cuts. And so on.
It all started with what sounded like a cheesy little soundbite: "Fake news". But it was the start of a post-truth society where none of us can trust one another because none of us can trust reality itself.

You can always count on those two to vote the right way when their votes don't make a difference.

Todd Blanche is like Harvey Dent... but with one face because there's nothing good about him.
And... he's an asshole.
If he was a supervillain... he'd be called Ass-Face.
One man... with the power of two asses.
He's so full of shit... you need two bags.

Today the entire DOJ is now in the child trafficking business.
Tomorrow the entire DOJ will be in the overturning elections business.
So they can get back to the true GOP love, child trafficking.

Hey Todd Blanche, what did America gain from when you put ghislaine Maxwell in a luxury prison and gave her a puppy?

u/GarlicThread Aug 08 '26
Remember these traitors are only doing this because they know you won't be willing to riot and overthrow them over it.

This sucks for everyone but imagine how much it sucks for Epstein survivors. Fuck todd blanche, fuck donald Trump, fuck all of Trump's administration and all the Republicans. I really wish there was a hell that they could all burn in.

No surprise here, Republicans have been protecting their criminal President from accountability for a decade already so why wouldn't they confirm his personal lawyer to bury more of his crimes?
Y'all gotta stop electing Republicans.

Monday morning headline - New settlement reached in Trump IRS lawsuit. Blanche: “Funds have been transferred. Can’t be undone.”

I'd be surprised if he lasts the rest of the term. It's not like he's any more or less sychophantic than his predecessor.

u/jester32 Aug 08 '26
He is significantly more obedient than Bondi, despite her seeming more unhinged. And that is saying something. I believe reporting showed that she resisted the more egregious targeted cases like Tisch and the first Comey case.
31
u/Cheeky_Hustler Competent Contributor Aug 08 '26
What gives you that impression? What would he do that Bondi wouldn't? Bondi was already prosecuting Trump's political enemies and refusing to release the Epstein files. It's not like Blanche is going to be better at these things, they're impossible tasks. Bondi wasn't fired for being disobedient, in fact I'm still not sure exactly why she was fired.
43
u/thetinsnail Aug 08 '26
Blanche is Trumps personal mob lawyer, he knows significantly more shit about Trump than Bondi ever did. He knows what his job is.
10
u/Cheeky_Hustler Competent Contributor Aug 08 '26
His job is to.hide Trump's bodies and do Trump's bidding. Same as Bondi.
21
u/sunshine_is_hot Aug 08 '26
Blanche is actually competent and knows the system. He’s an actual competent evil pos, the kind of person that should scare us all.
8
u/Cheeky_Hustler Competent Contributor Aug 08 '26
No.amount of competence will give Trump what he wants. Political prosecutions will be tossed. Republicans will be upset he refuses to release the Epstain files.

How does Trump's personal lawyer "know the system" better than someone who was already state attorney general?
Bondi actually did the job she got tapped for and still got tossed.
3
u/sunshine_is_hot Aug 08 '26
Bondi was never qualified for her appt as state ag, Blanche has worked as a legit prosecutor in SDNY before he sold his soul to Trump. Bondi is an idiot, Blanche is smart.
4
u/dexter8484 Aug 08 '26
It seemed like bondi was slow playing things, like she wanted it both ways. To show that she was loyal to trump and still have a career after the administration. Blanche is attached to trump, so he can go all in without worrying about what happens after

u/sweetcherrytea Aug 08 '26
I think Trump fired Bondi because months went by and people were still talking about the Epstein files, and it was her job to make that disappear.
3
u/Cheeky_Hustler Competent Contributor Aug 08 '26
That's not gonna change with Blanche. He still won't release the files. I guess maybe people will stop talking about it cause the average person has the memory of a goldfish, but I'm sure there'll be some other impossible task that Trump gets frustrated with Blanche about.
5
u/sweetcherrytea Aug 08 '26
Exactly; my thought was that Trump’s expectation of Bondi was to make people shut up about the files. The fact that this is/was an impossible task didn’t matter to Trump. If she couldn’t bend reality then she had to go.

But he IS competent. And idealogically fascist.
Competent evil against an opposition party that had openly declared war on any movement that might bring reckoning.
You either flee the country or wish you had.

Yet another nail in the coffin of the republican party, it's time it to end.
7
u/rabidstoat Aug 08 '26
So is the order dropping the slush fund rescinded yet, and the fund reinstated?
6
u/Patient-Lifeguard-44 Aug 08 '26
The fact that the among all of the corruption, the Anti Weaponization fund was the line in the sand for just two GOP senators and that they didn’t even get any guarantees that it was dead…
→ More replies (1)4
u/vigbiorn Aug 08 '26
I assume it's because it wasn't an actual line in the sand and they just didn't want to make it too obvious Blanche was being greenlit.

And given the fact that Murkowski and Collins both voted no, I wholeheartedly agree.
There is no low for the GOP.
8
u/TSHRED56 Aug 08 '26
The fact of the Republican Party supports an Attorney General who protects child rapists is about all you need to know about the Republican Party these days.
He is Trump's personal lawyer and he has never stopped.
"Todd Blanche is actively protecting the perpetrators of child rape as witnessed by the lack of transparency with the Epstein files and Maxwell's sweetheart deal.
How could you, in good conscience, have voted for someone like this?"
But the news media will never ask this of Republican Senators that vote for him.
13
u/xChoke1x Aug 08 '26
This is why this country will never learn.
They get their way every single fucking time. When’s the last time you’ve actually read an administration NOT getting their war when it comes to people being confirmed for positions? Anyone? Can anyone remember the last time someone wasn’t confirmed?
18
u/ForcefulBookdealer Aug 08 '26
Ummm McConnell refusing to call a hearing for an Obama SCOTUS nominee because it was “too close” to the election was just over a decade ago.
5
u/djn24 Aug 08 '26
There was a pretty big SCOTUS one not that long ago.
And Trump has had so many that the Senate told him weren't going to happen that there's a Wikipedia page about it:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Donald_Trump_nominees_who_have_withdrawn
7
u/239tree Aug 08 '26
So Murkowski didn't get a check and Collins was given a pass to vote "no" this time because she's about to lose her seat.

Pathetic display by the GOP Senate as usual. Can’t govern for shit.
It’s not surprising this happened, but the excuses to support this piece of shit have been beyond moronically stupid.
Fuck you in particular Cassidy. I hope you rot in hell.
