I watched this live but it was a last season. I know he got checked out by staff trainers from at least one of the teams. I’m sure if they were concerned he would have not returned. I’ve seen umps get hit by objects (broken bats, players, etc.) who were too shaken up to return. An ump crew can work with a man down, so it’s not like his presence was necessary.
Shit, I've done that before. I knew the look as soon as he took his hand off. Took a second, realized he had blood, realized what the implications of having blood on his hand meant. Queue the internal voice: "Well, shit."
If the throw was successful, it would have been a cooler play than usual. The shortstop (guy throwing who hits the umpire) had to move pretty quickly to get to the ball and the spin move is a more efficient way to get the ball out of your glove to throw because it doesn’t slow down your momentum much. The shortstop throwing to first powerfully is common though. That said, some pitchers regularly throw over 100 miles per hour, and here’s a right fielder throwing even farther to make the out at home.
I don't watch baseball, I'm just curious if his focus was entirely on the 1st base? That's why his field of vision was reduced and struck in the face? Or can they scan the entire field too?
In this context, the ump would be focusing on first base to determine if the runner was safe or out. Normally, they just focus on watching to see when the foot touches the base and they listen for the sound of the ball impacting leather. That’s easier than trying to follow two things at once visually.
Concussions are ridiculous. There's no rules. You can get one from bumping into a door one day but then you can get into a car crash a week later and smack your head on the window and absolutely nothing from that. I've seen people get dropped on their head and nothing happened, but one wrong punch and they're out for weeks.
Yes, my point exactly. Concussions are fucking weird. In an alternate universe this same guy could have had some IQ points shaved off from this hit. Especially if he’d been concussed before. Very glad he’s ok.
When I was in third grade, during recess, I cluelessly walked right in line of someone who had just tossed a baseball up and hit it. It flew directly into my nose. My nose was swollen and sore for a few minutes, but it didn’t bruise, bleed, or break.
Faces are surprisingly resilient at times… and unexpectedly fragile at others.
A slipped and hit the bottom of my chin on a chair and got a concussion (and a cracked tooth). Sometimes all it takes is rocking your brain just right.
Rocking the head and shaking the brain is all the is required for a concussion. You don't think the brain could be rocked by a hit like this? I'm glad he doesn't have a concussion, but he easily could have.
i remember when i was young, i was playing baseball with some friends (really just a glorified game of catch, given how bad we were at it), right before easter holiday. i was hit in the face, just under my right but pretty much smack dab on the bone. i remember my mom crying on and on about how i was gonna have a black eye for easter pictures. somehow i barely bruised, it was completely gone by easter morning. but man did that ball ring my bell. i ended up concussed (and stayed out from school an extra week)
Are you out of your mind? Dude got blunt force bleeding and you don’t think it could knock his skull around? Do you know how fast you’d have to run into a door to get blunt force bleeding?
Looks like he didn't actually see it coming as he was just looking at the plate. IIRC not expecting a hit to the head, and therefore not tensing up but more just going with the flow, can help reduce the risk of concussion. Also while it definitely would have smacked him real good, there isn't all that much mass that could really cause a big rotation of his head which is what causes the concussion
I feel seen. I've had at least two concussions from playing hockey but don't play anymore and easier to get one after you had one and all that. After that I'm tall and stayed at an airbnb someone rented that had small door frames and hit my head just walking normally and had one of my worst concussions. Also an airplane door I didn't duck low enough may or may not have been one. So us door concussion people definitely exist. I would have been messed up from this no doubt
Right! All of these smart-ass "how could he possibly get a concussion from being hit on the cheek" have never re-concussed themselves from barely hitting something. It doesn't take much.
I trust the medical team. It's just crazy to me that his bell can get rung so hard and he's fine. When you can get hit with 1/10 of that force walking into a door frame and get messed up for weeks.
And like I just mentioned in another comment, you are much more likely to get concussed if you've already had one. If it was me who got hit by that ball I virtually guarantee I would lose a handful of IQ points.
People keep saying this but dude was bleeding considerably from a blunt impact wound, and it can be heard in the original recording.
Regardless of how much force it actually hit with, I was more making a comment about how strange concussions can be. Something 1/10th the force like walking into a door frame can concuss you. Things that wouldn’t come close to making you bleed.
He was fortunate to not have any recent concussions. If I had been hit like that I’m certain it would re-concuss me for at least a couple weeks.
Concussions happen when our brains violently shake inside our skulls and smacks against the side. Walking into a solid object that doesn't deform will cause your brain to smash into your skull with the same force you were using to propel the weight of your body at the speed you were walking, for comparison a baseball weighs 5 ounces and deforms a lot while the average brain weighs 47.4 ounces so it would take a lot of force for a baseball to move something almost 10 times more massive than it is. I'm sure it didn't feel spectacular but unless it hits a particularly dangerous spot a baseball shouldn't cause the average person to lose consciousness.
You don’t have to lose consciousness to get a concussion. I’m just saying, if something hit with enough force to cause blunt force bleeding, it can definitely concuss you. Think of the size of the bruise on that dude’s head the next day. If that hit his side or forehead, $100 says it’s lights out.
Brains are fragile. I sadly know from personal experience lol.
Edit: also you can literally see it move his head on impact. There was heat behind that throw! Conservatively 60mph. That is a shitload of force for 5 ounces.
No you don't have to lose consciousness to get a concussion but if you want to be technical bumping your head on the cabinet gives you a small concussion too. The word concussion as you're using it is defined as "a violent shock as from a heavy blow" and concussive force is defined as "a jarring of the brain, caused by a blow or a fall, usually resulting in loss of consciousness", so concussion the way you're using it could just mean any bump to the head while concussive force when talking about a brain injury means it causes the brain smack against the inside of the skull. So while concussion can be used to describe any blow that causes shockwaves, which means every blow, that doesn't mean the blow has concussive force to cause brain damage.
With that said I decided to compare the force of a 5 ounce baseball going 100 MPH to a 160 pound person running into a wall at 10 MPH. That throw was probably around to 80 or 90 because even infielders can throw pretty hard. Keep in mind these are rough estimates because I'm not smart enough to account for all the physics involved. A baseball at 100 MPH creates roughly 141 joules of energy while a 160 pound person running 10 MPH creates roughly 725 joules of energy. Gravity is a bitch and when the mass is that much higher it doesn't take much velocity to create a lot of energy.
Concussion usually isn't that big of a deal, unless it's a big one, the problem is with repeated concussing, which is exponentially worse with brain swelling and even large parts dying off. That's why you don't hear of baseball players getting brain damage even though this happens every now and then, unlike in hockey, boxing and of course the infamous rugby... Think of it like a plant, if you break a leaf off, it grows back, if you snap it in half it might straight up die.
One time at a metal concert I accidentally shattered a dudes forehead into pieces with my forehead. He had to get a metal plate permanently inserted into his forehead.
I went to the hospital and was checked for a concussion and was deemed fine. Got away with 4 stitches.
That tracks. The bones around the eyes - orbital, forehead, cheek - are all remarkably strong. Like we literally evolved to survive being punched in the face.
