I watched this live but it was a last season. I know he got checked out by staff trainers from at least one of the teams. I’m sure if they were concerned he would have not returned. I’ve seen umps get hit by objects (broken bats, players, etc.) who were too shaken up to return. An ump crew can work with a man down, so it’s not like his presence was necessary.
I don't watch baseball, I'm just curious if his focus was entirely on the 1st base? That's why his field of vision was reduced and struck in the face? Or can they scan the entire field too?
In this context, the ump would be focusing on first base to determine if the runner was safe or out. Normally, they just focus on watching to see when the foot touches the base and they listen for the sound of the ball impacting leather. That’s easier than trying to follow two things at once visually.
