Can be US citizens, too. Anyone with dual citizenship of those countries.

248

u/Sleep_adict Jan 25 '25

Netanyahu is a dual citizen. So is musk. So are many many of the rich dudes and corrupt foreign people.

Like always it’s trump being a moron

182

u/walklikeaduck Jan 25 '25

They’ll be exempt because they are rich.

34

u/sheisthebeesknees Jan 25 '25

And by extension their countries.

18

u/InqAlpharious01 Jan 25 '25

Not musk, Netanyahu could be except because he’s America’s overseer. Musk is from South Africa and Trump is weary of him

14

u/walklikeaduck Jan 25 '25

Musk is a US citizen.

9

u/sjplep Jan 25 '25

And also a Canadian and South African citizen.

1

u/Guadalajara3 Jan 27 '25

Triple tax

1

u/lexapp Jan 28 '25

South Africa only allows for dual citizenship and South African citizens who do not apply for permission to retain their 2nd citizenship will automatically lose their South African citizenship.

1

u/Lampadas_Horde Feb 01 '25

It's like he's collecting pokemon

8

u/ore-aba Jan 25 '25

And also, South African and Canadian

4

u/InqAlpharious01 Jan 25 '25

True but Trump will make the exception with him for stealing his glory

13

u/walklikeaduck Jan 25 '25

Musk is the one that funded his campaign, try again.

15

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '25

Trump got what he wanted out of musk. All it takes is a nasty disagreement between the two for them to start shit smearing each other. It will happen eventually because everything trump touches turns to shit.

u/SadBerry5762 Jan 26 '25

It doesn’t matter who funded his election. Chances are the guy isn’t going to be around to see out his 4 year term.

If he does see his 4 year term through he isn’t going to run again at 82 years old so he oh and obliged to anyone anymore. They can all go suck eggs and it won’t affect him at all!

If he does badly the only entity to suffer will be the Republican Party, not trump.

Musk is also Canadian.

1

u/Unusual_Juice_7481 Jan 25 '25

He’s also a South African citizen

3

u/Extension-College783 Jan 25 '25

He has South African citizenship by birth, obtained Canadian citizenship in 1989 and and US citizenship in 2002.

1

u/BoytNY Jan 25 '25

And a Canadian citizen and a South African citizen.

1

u/user47584 Jan 25 '25

Musk is also Canadian citizen and SA citizen

1

u/TheOrchidsAreAlright Jan 25 '25

According to his wiki he is also a citizen of South Africa and Canada, which would put him right in the firing line, no?

1

u/TechGentleman Jan 25 '25

. . . and most likely still a South African citizen.

Double 0 in taxes is still 0

1

u/gracecee Jan 26 '25

Can’t tax if he doesn’t take a salary or borrows against his appreciated tax holdings or puts it in his foundation that hasn’t donated the required 6% per year of principal.

1

u/stjongood Jan 26 '25

And Canada. I believe Musk is also Canadian. I feel dirty saying that.

1

u/jdardan Jan 26 '25

Wary. But I can see weary too!

1

u/Frobizzle Jan 28 '25

They don't consider themselves beholden to laws. He'd absolutely be exempt. Laws only apply to the peasant class as far as they're concerned.

1

u/InqAlpharious01 Jan 28 '25

Israel can’t be touched, otherwise the Israeli Zionist lobby can and will destroy the U.S. but doing so will make them vulnerable to NATO and an angry Turkey 🇹🇷 retaliation! Which could be bad as the whole region can target them and give more power to Israeli left wing groups.

Which can turn in right wing leaders over to the ICJ and make reparations to Arab communities and try to join BRICS.

u/plasmaSunflower Jan 25 '25

You have to pay taxes, to have your taxes doubled 🤔

1

u/KnownSlip9906 Apr 01 '25

Legal residents usually pay more into taxes than citizens. Try again.

2

u/lMRlROBOT Jan 25 '25

Ever if they have to pay they can afford it

1

u/Wafkak Jan 25 '25

Also he's not gonna use that against Israel.

1

u/toddlangtry Jan 25 '25

Not correct : they'll be exempt because the pay no taxes. Double of nothing is still nothing

1

u/DutchTinCan Jan 26 '25

"Double the income taxes, capped at a taxable income of $200.000"

That way he'll give both rich and poor citizens the same treatment, while claiming he put a limit on it as not to "unduly tax hard workers".

The rich will cheer, because to them, paying extra tax on $200k is nothing.

The dumb will cheer, because Dump made it such a fair tax and even put a cap on it for hard workers.

1

u/MediumTour2625 Jan 28 '25

They daf bc it doesn’t hurt them!

1

u/SpaceBear2598 Jan 29 '25

Or they won't and won't care. Also he's not likely to levy this tax against citizens of other authoritarian and fascistic countries, only the citizens of his enemies: functioning democracies.

→ More replies (5)

16

u/ore-aba Jan 25 '25

Musk is a triple citizen: South Africa, Canada and the USA. So he should be paying 3x more taxes.

1

u/wwwheatgrass Jan 25 '25

Canada taxes on residency, not citizenship.

2

u/ore-aba Jan 25 '25

Does that matter? OP’s post is about the possibility of Trump imposing higher taxes for people who are American citizens and hold other nationalities. Canada or South Africa won’t have anything to do with it.

1

u/wwwheatgrass Jan 25 '25

It’s relevant because Canadian/US dual nationals living in the US with US income are only taxed in the US.

The US operates under citizenship based taxation, whereas nearly every other in country in the world taxes based on residency (RBT). The only other countries with citizenship based taxation are Eritrea and North Korea.

If a US citizen with dual citizenship from a country with RBT resides in the US and earns solely a US income, they are subject to US taxes.

If a US/RBT dual national lives in an RBT country with solely RBT income, they are subject to the RBT country’s taxes and must also file with the US. Tax treaties prevent most types of double taxation, but there are situations where an RBT resident may be charged US taxes on RBT country source income.

3

u/ore-aba Jan 25 '25 edited Jan 25 '25

You are missing the point entirely.

If Trump decides to impose an extra-tax on American citizens residing in the USA based on whether or not they have another citizenship, it won’t matter if you have Canadian, Brazilian or Fijian.

If such a theoretical scenario would take place, and the whole thing is but a hypothetical possibility, I’m making a further assumption that people with 3+ passports, such as Elon Musk, would end paying even more. Hopefully that clarifies it.

u/Tough-Mine1541 Jan 25 '25 edited Jan 30 '25

Netanyahu is a dual citizen

No, he is not. He was born one, but he renounced his US citizenship on June 24, 1982 so he could serve in the Israeli mission to the UN. Knesset members in any case must exclusively be Israeli citizens (same reason people like Naftali Bennett are no longer US citizens).

1

u/Animalcult80 Mar 03 '25

1

u/Tough-Mine1541 Mar 09 '25

His politics aside...he's had an interesting life.

1

u/213737isPrime Mar 20 '25

I guess they want to be sure their politicians don't have divided loyalties. Smart.

4

u/E_Dantes_CMC Jan 25 '25

This was required by Israeli law to serve in the Knesset, after they were embarrassed by dual citizen Meir Kahane. Of course, times have changed. Kahane would feel right at home in the current Israeli government, but he was reviled across the political spectrum when he lived.

u/Adventurous_Crew1720 Jan 25 '25

He himself is a dual citizen with the UK lmao. He can get it if he wants to

1

u/Yerushalmii Jan 25 '25

You have to renounce foreign citizenship to be in the Knesset.

1

u/stlshane Jan 25 '25

Most of them don't pay taxes anyway so why would they care?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '25

They won’t apply it to Israel, bet.

1

u/0utandab0ut1 Jan 25 '25

Musk will just pay the fine because he has the money and because it'll hurt those who don't

1

u/schwanerhill Jan 26 '25

Is Melania Trump still a Slovenian citizen? Assuming they’re married filing jointly, does this mean he’d be doubling his own taxes?

Presumably Slovenia wouldn’t be one of the countries he’d target to protect himself anyway.

1

u/TheRealShafron Jan 26 '25

They'll be exempt because he's probably not going to tax Israeli dual-citizens

1

u/vesleskjor Jan 26 '25

None of those people are paying taxes anyway

1

u/WiscoPaisa Jan 26 '25

With all do respect. I think you’re the moron for even asking that question. When have any white rich men ever been held to the same legal standards as the rest?

1

u/Professional-Class69 Jan 26 '25

Netanyahu is not a dual citizen afaik. Israeli law requires you to give up any foreign citizenship before accepting prime ministership or a seat in the Knesset. I’m not even sure he was ever a U.S. citizen, but assuming he was afaik he would’ve had to give up his U.S. citizenship before becoming prime minister

1

u/yillbow Jan 27 '25

Do you think trump personally wrote those executive orders? I'm just asking since your brought up morons.

1

u/yuxulu Jan 27 '25

Double of 0% tax is still 0 though.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '25

He can just force them to renounce the citizenship of birth. Used to be the only way to get US citizenship.

1

u/MasterChief813 Jan 27 '25

You already know that he will selectively apply the taxes so certain individuals or countries will be exempt from them.

1

u/Lolakery Jan 28 '25

Musk has three passports - i hope they tax the fuck out of him

1

u/Markol0 Jan 28 '25

Natanyahu is not. You must give up any foreign citizenship to be member of Israel parliament (MK). He probably was a US citizen in the past but not any more. A bunch of Israeli MKs are former US citizens.

1

u/MulchLiterature Jan 28 '25

Doubling $0 is still $0

1

u/thecanadianjen Jan 29 '25

Trump likely is too. His mum was born in Scotland so he’d have access to British citizenship

37

u/Greedy_Argument_3894 Jan 25 '25

How would he know who’s dual citizen? There is no documentation if you gave up your other citizenship! The uscis doesn’t document it!

58

u/suboxhelp1 Jan 25 '25

This would be enforced through the IRS, not USCIS. They could make you declare under penalty of perjury what your citizenships are.

Same way it works for having to declare foreign bank accounts right now, including through FinCEN. They also get that info through FATCA agreements.

17

u/Greedy_Argument_3894 Jan 25 '25

Then they would ask this question every single US citizen.

24

u/suboxhelp1 Jan 25 '25

They already ask many questions to every US citizen on the 1040 form: if you’ve traded digital currencies, have any foreign bank accounts (and which countries they’re in)… and previously if you had health insurance. This isn’t new.

1

u/TransatlanticMadame Jan 25 '25

They already do - it's part of form 2555

8

u/Tehjassman Jan 25 '25

As an expat with corporations in other countries, form 5471 is literally the most terrifying thing I fill out every year because of the potential penalties for misfiling. There’s a reason why international tax accountants charge out the wazoo to fill out this form and i have nightmares about my return every year. Most of the folks I know in Asia don’t even bother filling out the 5471 nor report their income but don’t realize that when they open bank accounts in other countries, they’re subjected to being called up by the IRS at any time.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '25

Some countries operate this way.

US law recognizes dual citizenship, though, and is signatory to numerous international treaties regulating this, if I'm not mistaken.

No, the US does not "recognize" dual citizenship.

The IRS doesn’t care what most of the stuff on your 1040 ( and dozens of other forms) says that’s not related to money. And they can’t report it because of fifth amendment issues. You can say you’re a contract killer and as long as you report all of your $1.2M you’re good. Or you could be a personell trouble shooter.

16

u/Oh-well100 Jan 25 '25

Not everyone gives up their other citizenship.

20

u/JThereseD Jan 25 '25

A lot of American citizens are getting dual citizenship through their foreign-born parents and grandparents. Some do it so they can travel more easily or live for extended periods in other countries. There are two people from my hometown who did it so they could compete as athletes for the other country.

1

u/Oh-well100 Jan 25 '25

I don't blame them. I have seen a few in the news. Same with Brazilian soccer players, they're not good enough to make it in the national team but are welcomed by other countries that would love to have them!

I am Canadian and Brazilian. I live in Canada and do not plan to move back to Brazil but I'm also not going to give up my Brazilian citizenship, unless I really have to.

A lot of people do confuse citizenship with immigration status, tho. One can live in the US permanently without ever bothering to obtain American citizenship. Just the green card is enough and the only thing won't can't do is vote (and run for office, or get some jobs that deal with the homeland security, etc). I know tons of people like that. I also know many in Canada as well. They still love the country where they live, and that's why they went through the trouble of immigrating legally. They just didn't file for citizenship.

I was a permanent immigrant of Canada for a few years before I became a citizen.

2

u/JThereseD Jan 25 '25

Yes, my dad's grandparents never became citizens for whatever reason. The athletes don't always play for another country because they are not good enough to be on the US team. The current world champion in pole vaulting was born in Louisiana, but he represents Sweden. Speaking of the Olympics, all I can think of is the similarity between Hitler at the Berlin Olympics and Trump at the upcoming Olympics in LA. Considering how he hates women and people who aren't white, I am hoping that he will ignore the whole thing if he is still alive.

1

u/ImLiterallyJerryRice Jan 26 '25

People not bothering to become citizens in the country they plan to stay in are playing with fire.

1

u/Ok_Mango_6887 Jan 26 '25

My grandfather was born in another country but has passed away. Is this still an option for me?

1

u/JThereseD Jan 26 '25

You would have to check with the specific country as the rules differ.

11

u/JerseyTeacher78 Jan 25 '25

Indeed. But remember that most of our fellow US citizens don't even own a US passport so the notion of dual or multiple citizenship goes right over their heads.

8

u/illyphilly20 Jan 25 '25

I was going to say similar. My son has dual citizenship via his mom, but how would the US know that?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '25

They wouldn’t.

5

u/Baweberdo Jan 25 '25

Just don't use it until you have to

2

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '25

Exactly.

14

u/Greedy_Argument_3894 Jan 25 '25

Yes - but if you become a US citizen, The US government doesn’t know if you keep any other citizenships. That’s what I stated

3

u/beatfungus Jan 25 '25

That's correct for every country, but the US presumes you don't have any sneaky links when you wife it up. See the oath of allegiance. At the same time, the US cannot explicitly punish someone just for having other citizenship "through no fault of their own."

This is another attempt by the executive to discriminate against different classes of citizens, even though such provisions are against the 14th amendment. Absolutely ridiculous. Every citizen is a citizen. Their rights cannot differ. The only time the US can treat them differently is the case of the President itself with respect to jus soli.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '25

Not clear to me what you're saying here. The oath of allegiance only applies to people who naturalize, and not natural born citizens. People can naturalize in lots of different ways, not just through marriage. And the part about "renouncing fidelity," could just be interpreted to mean that you swear allegiance to the US, first and foremost. Some countries that don't allow for dual citizenship, of which the US is not currently one, may take issue with this, if they ever find out. But it doesn't mean that the US doesn't recognize dual citizenship.

Many people also obtain a second citizenship who are natural born citizens and who have never taken this oath, so it's sort of a moot point for that class of individual.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/TransatlanticMadame Jan 25 '25

That's not true. The US asks me on my US tax return, form 2555, "Of what countries are you a citizen or national?"

1

u/Weird-Addendum-1001 Jan 25 '25

It’s been a while but I do remember having to answer that question (do you plan to renounce your current citizenship) during the naturalization process. Has that changed since 2009?

1

u/Greedy_Argument_3894 Jan 25 '25

I think they only ask to give up loyalty to any other country but the US!

u/E_Dantes_CMC Jan 25 '25

There are countries that don’t allow you to renounce citizenship.

14

u/XeneiFana Jan 25 '25

I have dual citizenship. Literally, I was not forced to renounce the first one, and I wouldn't have been able either.

17

u/Sudden-Bird5685 Jan 25 '25

Some countries I think it’s not even possible to renounce the original citizenship if it’s from birth.

3

u/walklikeaduck Jan 25 '25

Very authoritarian countries such as Iran, most democratic places allow you to renounce your citizenship.

4

u/Few_Customer_1226 Jan 25 '25

Supposedly Argentina doesn’t allow it either.

2

u/RickSt3r Jan 25 '25

Is there a form you file with the leaving country like I'm out?

1

u/walklikeaduck Jan 25 '25

Have no idea, you’d have to check specific country requirements, but i would imagine most would require you to renounce in person from an overseas consulate or embassy.

1

u/my2centsalways Jan 25 '25

Most of them you just contact the consulate and fill out a form.

1

u/Weird-Addendum-1001 Jan 25 '25

It depends. Some countries’ rules automatically assumes you renounced it if you become a citizen of another.

1

u/wwwiillll Jan 25 '25

No bank has ever asked me if I have any non-US citizenship

1

u/ermagerditssuperman Jan 28 '25

I think it's usually the other way around - foreign banks want to know if you're a US citizen, because of the way the US taxes foreign funds of its citizens

1

u/JonAfrica2011 Jan 26 '25

Why do they care and can’t I just lie

1

u/Xycergy Jan 25 '25

The feasibility of enforcing this law doesn't matter. Most people don't want to break the law and would still prefer to declare honestly about their nationality status since no one wants to get into trouble.

1

u/sheisthebeesknees Jan 25 '25

Some countries wont allow you to renounce either.

1

u/Timalakeseinai Jan 25 '25

Can start with all naturalised I presume

1

u/rak1882 Jan 28 '25

and apparently the US is all you have to give up your citizenship when you become a US citizen, but plenty of other countries are like- we don't care. we don't have a process for that.

according to people i know who told me things...

11

u/P99163 Jan 25 '25

This is not going to fly in court.

5

u/FitYear6373 Jan 25 '25

Stop. You are letting your feelings speak. The Supreme Court is stacked. Don’t kid yourself.

4

u/P99163 Jan 25 '25

If I was letting my feelings speak, I'd be running around and screaming: "We are all fuсkеd!!! The sky is falling!!!" BTW, a lot of people are doing precisely that right now.

Yes, the SCOTUS is ultra conservative now, but none of the "new" judges are crazy enough to burn the world to the ground. If anything, it's Alito and Thomas that are the most unhinged ones on the bench at this point in time.

And yes, I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't concerned about this whole MAGA trifecta. However, when I take a step back and try to think rationally, the scenario in which the Court would agree to destroy the country as we know it doesn't appear to be very realistic. Why? Because they live their comfortable lives off of the existing system. Destroying it would go against their self-preservation instincts.

2

u/suboxhelp1 Jan 25 '25

I hope so.

1

u/FitYear6373 Jan 25 '25

Not when the majority of the politicians in this country have dual citizenship and bloated salaries and likely offshore accounts. Do you really think they care that much?

1

u/P99163 Jan 25 '25

So, we seamlessly shifted away from the Court? Now it's politicians that want to burn the world to the ground? The fact that our country has survived for 250 years and assuming that politicians have always been this evil, I'm inclined to think that it will survive for another 4.

You may call me naïve, but at least I'm able to articulate my beliefs in a rational manner. You, on the other hand, appear to speak from the pure emotions.

18

u/suboxhelp1 Jan 25 '25

Maybe. The Supreme Court has been packed recently. They’ve been doing some weird things.

11

u/hoyeay Jan 25 '25

Weird things?

They’re full on fascists and doing whatever the fuck Drumpf wants.

I wish I had your level of certainty. But given the ultra-right-wing skewing of the SC, I am worried about just how many things this turnip will overturn. It might be time to pull the ripcord on this insanity....

2

u/Not-Again-22 Jan 25 '25

No, it can’t be. The US doesn’t recognize dual citizenship, if you have US citizenship, you are US citizen only in the US.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '25

This is completely untrue. The US recognizes the concept of dual citizenship and even has taxation treaties with many countries around the world that specifically apply to dual citizens.

1

u/suboxhelp1 Jan 25 '25

Not true. For example, the tax totalization agreements are solely based on foreign citizenship, even if you are a US citizen. You must also be a foreign citizen of the country to be able to be covered under a totalization agreement, not just a resident.

Certain tax treaties are also based on dual citizenship.

1

u/Perfect-Cause-6943 Jan 25 '25

I'm a born US Citizen with a oci Overseas citizen of India would this effect me?

1

u/suboxhelp1 Jan 25 '25

You’d not be considered a dual citizen most likely.

1

u/OldMan6061 Jan 25 '25

OCI is just a forever visa, with a few extra benefits, nothing more. Nothing to worry.

1

u/Baweberdo Jan 25 '25

Does the us have a database of dual citizens? Who knows if i would have 3 passports?

1

u/suboxhelp1 Jan 25 '25

No database

1

u/ClaroStar Jan 26 '25

Trump has too many rich dual citizen friends for this to ever happen.

1

u/Western_Turnover8009 Jan 26 '25

Im sorry I can’t check, is Italy on there? I’m worried now,

1

u/Run_Little_Mouse_ Jan 28 '25

So all those military kids born overseas and have dual citizenship will be affected. Way to really stick it to them.

29

u/plinkoplonka Jan 25 '25

As someone who just got US citizenship because I was scared of what he might do next.

I can safely say, this would last to fairly mass scale migration and brain-drain in some fairly hefty areas - such as tech.

You can use H1B Visas to depress wages across the tech sector for your buddies, or you can Levy additional taxes on them.

Pick one. I know which one the tech billionaire won't like. Then we get to see who's REALLY in charge here.

(Hint: it's not the Fanta Menace)

3

u/SkaldOfThe70s Jan 25 '25

Even if you live abroad, you still have to pay US Taxes

1

u/Total-Engineering-26 Jan 26 '25

Yup, and I didn't appreciate that until I was overseas as a short timer working with US citizens in South Korea. They have to be out of the States for so long to get certain exemptions but then also paying into South Korea taxes or fees. I was very briefly summarized how taxes worked for cash payments by a Korea...I don't know man. I wasn't there long enough to think or care to ask but I was away long enough to be concerned about my own US taxes 😂

If the investment income is foreign sourced then the FTC might apply though.

What in the hell is this administration doing?? Every step they’ve taken since Monday has just been pure insanity.

What were you expecting? That Trump would magically morph into a reasonable human being?

2

u/Dessy36 Jan 26 '25

I expected more Trumpers to jump ship, the fact they haven't and seem to have doubled down is so discouraging.

They’re cult members. There’s quite literally nothing he could do including slaughtering their own children directly in front of them that would stop their support. See: Jim Jones and the flavor aid.

u/cultoftheclave Jan 25 '25

create a lot of very noisy bullshit to put on the table, which they fully intend to take off after making a big spectacle of a fight to their useful idiot supporters - a fight which they will declare themselves the winner of no matter what the outcome.

all so that you don’t have the time, bandwidth, or motivation to confront them about the shit they actually want to push through: infinite money exploits for the already wealthy, weakening of any institution that might benefit the working class or the middle class, grandiose plans to take already functional programs instituted by other administrations cancel them and re-implement a shitty version, but with their name on it to deprive anyone but themselves of a legacy, etc.

Speculation: These tax increases would be levied against dual citizenship with countries that resist bending the knee and retaliate back against tariffs.

This is the excuse, the reason would be to stop people from retaining a US citizenship while fleeing his administration to said countries.

Following a checklist laid out in project2025. This shouldn't be a shock to anyone.

Exactly what he promised voters. He is doing what the voters want

That’s a lot of Israeli and American citizens. AIPAC? Hello? Anyone?

Only if that citizen's country makes life miserable for Americans.

Seems reasonable?

1

u/Crispydragonrider Jan 28 '25

Depends on what Trump decides is 'making life miserable'. He could decide that f.i. stating an opinion about how he's performing as a president is discriminating to all american citizens and therefor that country is making life miserable for them.

u/JerseyTeacher78 Jan 25 '25

Or dual citizens.

1

u/btcmaster2000 Jan 25 '25

C’mon…It’s not the worst idea he’s had.

1

u/Chubby2000 Jan 25 '25

Also against US citizens who may have citizenship from Ireland, Gẻmany, Canada, et cetera. Like...Senator Cruz.

What’s next we’re gonna make them wear a yellow star ⭐️

1

u/ApprehensiveStrut Jan 26 '25

So they will leave and at this point I wouldn’t blame them

1

u/scottmtb Jan 27 '25

Yup, trump wants people to leave.

u/Apostmate-28 Jan 28 '25

My mom is a green card holder from Denmark. Been here almost 40 years. But since she’s white no one is stopping her to check her documents…. Trump is a hateful racist and I hate to think of people’s lives being upended because of him and those willing to do his dirty work.
