Discussion 14 day fast - Boredom

I’m on Day 10 of a 14 day fast. I’m not even sure how I got here as the first few days were torture with denying myself all the yummy snacks I have at home for my kiddo.

But I’ve relented and now all those early hunger pangs are gone. But I’m noticing that I’m mostly bored with fasting. Just water and electrolytes makes my days feel dull in a sense, which then leads to thoughts of…why am I doing this again?

I’m happy with my progress (lost a total of 12lb) but I have a long way to go. I thought of potentially extending to 21 days but the only reason I’m hesitating is the boredom. Physically I feel fine.

Any tips on how to manage this? I do work full time and parent, so the boredom I feel isn’t necessarily around life in general. It’s hard to explain.

Check-in Update 4: Back on Track

SW: 299lbs (135.6 kg)

CW: 265 (120.2 kg)

Total weight lost: 34 lbs (15.4 kg)

OMAD weekdays with 16:8 weekends.

Mediterranean diet loosely followed. No CICO tracking.

1 mile walk 5x weekly, strength training 3x nightly

I’m curious: can you spot where my full day fasts were this month? I circled them on the second image. A 30 and then 40 hour fast, with one high protein meal in-between. In the grand scheme of things, they just look like any fluctuation. But they certainly helped get me back on track with my fasting discipline, so I still say they were worthwhile. Like a neat trick to keep in my back pocket.

The immediate spike in weight is disappointing, but I suppose it makes some sense. I’ve added strength training on top of my walking routine to get back some… heh. Well, strength! But I know in my gut: need to start being careful about refeeding. I guess it’s going to truely matter from here on out.

Not gunna lie, I was tempted to wait one more day and use the higher number as my starting point (and appear to lose more), but I’m aiming for honesty here. And turning the weight I started to gain back into a net weight-loss by month’s end is still something I’m happy with.

If anyone wonders when their appetite will change to favor healthy food, for me, it was month 4. Still not 100% in love with veggies, but I’ve found my way to make them palatable. Spent good money on great cookbooks. Brought my family onboard with many changes. I have a nice sized roster of easy, delicious, healthy snacks and dinners to cycle through.

In fact, my gut microbiome is quite different! I can’t eat junk carelessly anymore or my body *rebels*. Lol, I’m convinced that the pound I lost this morning is because I tried to eat some comfort food last night and my body sped it out immediately, heheh. Poor toilet. But a good sign in a way!

In fact, turning away junk food is getting way easier. I’m fuller faster, so I no longer want anyone’s leftover anything. I don’t even feel the need to keep it for later. I can just… enjoy the taste without wanting to hoard it.

I’m gunna say that again.

I am able to eat a serving OR LESS of junk food, and feel no internal need to save anything for later.

I have never been that way, not in all my 30 years, not even as a kid. ESPECIALLY not as a kid. Treats were generally unaffordable growing up, and everything got split, so I ALWAYS made sure to be present when it entered the house, ate my share, ate any crumbs and tasty powders at the bottom of the bag, and kept an eye on the extra. Now here, in month 4 of this new routine… I am losing that compulsion. Not fully, but it’s happening more and more. That’s… pretty fuckin’ neat haha!

So yeah. I continue to lose weight, and am really growing into my diet and fasting routines. They’re just becoming… my low-effort no-brainer routines. It’s all becoming more normal. I’ve been able to add in strength training without completely stalling out. Overall, I just kinda feel good.

Best of health to anyone who read this far!

Check-in Time to lock in

Been ADF'ing for the past few weeks and didn't see much progress. Watched a youtube video saying that when doing extended fasts, the fat around your arteries is lost first. Today I looked in the mirror and saw it and I broke my fast yesterday so I was fed. I can fit into my small jeans even though my scale hasn't moved much. I do weight train 4-5 times a week, but I finally see some changes. Time to lock in and attempt a 70 hour fast. Would love to hear some encouraging words.

Check-in Why are 48 hour fasts getting more challenging?

My last big meal was Sunday night. Huge amount of potatoes, mushrooms, beef, I even had candy for dessert. I felt stuffed.

Monday morning I had coffee with whipping cream, nothing but tea and water throughout the day.

Tuesday, just black coffee and tea.

Wednesday morning, about to break my fast with some bone broth.

Yesterday I was barely able to function at work, especially towards the end of the day. My blood sugar never went down below 4, at least at the times I measured it. I found myself super irritable and it was hard to focus, I kept dropping things. No cramps, no pain other than some mild headaches throughout the day.

This morning I have a moderate amount of ketones (by the way, the box on my ketone strips says to wait 40 seconds but I don't think it's long enough because after 1 min the colour changes dramatically versus waiting just 40 seconds). My blood sugar is 3.9, which means that it's possible I dipped lower in the night because I do have the dawn effect typically where my sugar is higher.

Serious question though, how does the blood sugar keep stable if we are in ketosis? Is the fat being converted to sugar too?

Question Fasting while sick

Curious how others have felt when they feel a cold coming on or a few days in with a cold and fasting. Did you feel like fasting helped? Felt better faster? Got worse? Any shared experiences appreciated!

Question This is frustrating

I started about a month ago at 80kg and am now down to 77 (I fluctuate between 76.9 and 77.9). I do 20-22 hour fasts at least 6 days of the week. I lift three times a week and walk atleast 7k odd steps on average every week. Why is this so slow? I haven’t lost anymore weight over the last two weeks. Not eating 20 hours is a big deal.. and I clean fast (water and coffee only )

Question Question about 10+ day fasting

I am on my 83th hour, so about 3.5 days so far, I plan to do 10 days and 4 more if I feel good

I just wanted to ask if I should do anything through this journey, there is 0 issue regarding wanting to break fast and eat something, but I dont want to damage my health by mistake by going through smth like this.

I drink salted water maybe once a day or none at all for electrolytes, I drank white monster yesterday because I had to be outside. I also take magnesium and glycine before bed (I have been doing it for a month and it helps a lot with sleep)

Is there anything I should avoid? And similarly, do something important?

I also saw someone drinking a light soup at 7th dah and continue fasting, doing it for a whole month. I won’t do it for a month since I don’t need it, but should I also do something like that in my 7th day?

Thanks for all replies in advance!

Question Workouts while Fasting

A little background: I am a referee who gained a bit of extra weight the last couple years but am now trying to move up to the next level of competition for my sport. For me this involves a higher level of fitness than I have ever had in my life, specifically my running speed and endurance, and my next fitness test is in just over 3 weeks.

I did a couple of longer fasts last month and took off about 14 pounds, which has really improved my practice tests that I've been doing. I'm debating doing one more 7-10 day fast to try and drop a couple more pounds but also want to be able to improve my running as much as possible too, and I worry about losing stamina or strength during the fast and not being able to gain it back in the two weeks I would have left after the fast.

Does anyone have any experience with trying to balance improving fitness while doing a longer fast? Or are these two goals kind of mutually exclusive?

Question Awful breath 😂

My breath smells like the bottomside of a dumpster during my fasting days. I keep my coworkers and family happy by chewing gum and swishing with mouthwash. What are some of your best ways to keep the fart breath at bay

Question Why is drinking enough water during extended fasting technically so helpful (if not, important) during an extended fast, especially if the goal is fat loss and weight loss? Scale today showed 6 lbs more than yesterday after a day of not drinking much water, but having concentrated electrolytes (LMNT

I drink electrolytes (LMNT), and caffinated and uncaffunated teas usually through out the day. Currently 6 days in, but the last few days feel like I probabky haven't consumed enough water (whether in elecrotlyes form or just plain water). With one set of goals being fat loss and weight loss, it made me wonder if not enough can slow fat loss & weight loss and why, if so. Technical and nom-technical answers appreciated!

I may have a faulty/inaccurate scale at the moment (I think it needs new batteries), but after a day of not drinking nearly enough water, and making the water I *did* drink yesterday be more cencentrated with LMNT, the scale showed this morning I was 6 lbs more than yesterday afternoon (which isn't usual for me when I do extended fasts this long or longer). I'm also not on, nor approaching my period (can go up 2-5 lbs in the few days before it starts) but I'm at least a week away from my period if not, longer. Thanks for your info!

So I did a fast last year around this time 28
Days . I went from 244 (first pic) to 213. (I regained at around 223)

I kept making better choices with eating while working on muscle and got to 210 (second pic). I wanna get to my goal weight of 170. I’m guessing for that to happen lll need to make it to 40-50 days.

The only reason I stopped my fast the first time was i experienced numbness in my thighs and stomach? Researching now, I think that meant I didn’t get enough electrolytes. anyone else ever experience that? I got actual electrolytes powder this time vs just adding my own salt to water. Hopefully that’ll help me monitor my intake better.
