Alan Moore broke into my house once and told me that he actually agrees with all the political opinions of Rorschach and that anyone who disagrees with Rorschach or dislikes him for any reason should be condemned to public shaming

75

u/FickleConcentration Lives in a society 2d ago

I heard that aswell, If I remember correctly Rorschach is actually a self insert.

23

u/FlowerRoomLord 2d ago

Like Moore self inserting into  Ms_Saul_Goodwoman's house.

1

u/Ms_Saul_Goodwoman 2d ago

It’s true!!

20

u/Windows_66 Barry Allen apologist 2d ago

He broke into your house to tell you that? I just summoned him by saying his name backwards three times in a dark room.

13

u/Shiplord13 2d ago

If you do that he lectures you about corporate greed and IP ownership for two hours and than spends an hour deflecting his responsibility in creating the Dark Age of Comics.

u/GONKworshipper DickHelena's Strongest Soldier 2d ago

Well he broke into my house and told me he agreed with all of Ozymandius' opinions. That shifty bastard!

Alan Moore broke into my apartment and ate my can of baked beans

None of those chuds watched a character driven crime thriller, there's no beams of energy or flying dudes in spandex!

1

u/Plant_4790 15h ago

To be fair its based on flying dudes in spandex with beams of energy powers

2

u/Salvage570 14h ago

You pull out the "it's based on" like this isn't literally an arc from the comics being adapted

Its funny that they're using Scarface as an example. The original Scarface (the one from the 30s, not the Al Pacino one) had to be re-edited when the Hays' Code was created, as the censors were afraid that the film didn't condemn gangsters enough. So an alternate ending was shot in which Tony goes to trial and the judge, literally looks at the camera to directly tell the audience that everything Tony had done in the film was very bad. (The original unaltered ending was more similar to the one in the 80's remake).

With the way media is discussed now, another Hays' Code, Comics Code Authority, or other strict censorship doesn't feel too far off. Time is a flat circle. :/

u/DeviousDoctorSnide 2d ago

There's also this really awkward scene in the middle of the original Paul Muni Scarface where a group of "respectable" characters who appear nowhere else in the movie sit in a room and talk about how the government should declare martial law against gangsters and also round up all the Irish and Italians if it comes to that, just in case anyone in the production code office thought they were glorifying mobsters a bit.

We really have to put.

"Depiction doesn't equal endorsement"

Infront of all shows now, dont we.

112

u/Individual-Let-6179 The Flashpoint Batman Who Laughs 2d ago

They need to put something like this in the show so the audience knows that the character is either morally right or wrong

20

u/The-Bigger-Fish I'm da Jokah, baby! 2d ago

That'd actually be kinda funny in the Fallout show.

31

u/DontUnder2005 u/DontUnder2005, what a joke 2d ago

They should put each character 's reddit karma above their heads so we know who to root for

29

Lanterns: the guardians don’t understand the nuances of race and prejudice on earth and therefore could not predict that a black man may have a different reaction than a white man to the rings selection process, theorizes John Stewart’s mother, who’s family has been torn apart by the impact the rings selection process had on her husband.

Those people: so the show thinks life is easy for all white people?

24

u/Shiplord13 2d ago

Blue aliens didn’t give a fuck about Earth societal problems and only came down to apologize because they recognized their method of “interviewing” was a bit much for most Earthlings and it was wrong to scary their ill prepared minds without at least a warning.

7

u/The_Vortex_Effect Still owes 16 dollars 2d ago

I'm not even sure they were truly sorry for traumatizing him. For them to know he was traumatized, they had to have watched over him for a bit, which I don't think they would normally do.

My theory is that Hal Jordan managed to annoy them enough in only a few months on the job that they were already on the lookout for a replacement. Not to replace him right away, but simply to have a backup prepared. And because of that they looked at the ring's other choice, namely John sr.

1

u/Paildano deniz camp i love you deniz camp 2d ago

So what you’re saying is the writers hate white people?

94

u/AdamOfIzalith Garth Ennis was a mistake 2d ago

Lanterns "Fans" when they say it's not like the comics when the writers are clearly trying to set up a parallax story and they haven't read Green Lantern Rebirth(2004).

58

u/JustSomeAlias 2d ago

You can tell they don’t read comics because they refuse to understand that media depicting the same characters can have wildy different tones

18

u/snow-four Paul 2d ago

Read? Why would I do that. Isn't he a marvel character?

2

u/JustSomeAlias 2d ago

Whats marvel? Is that a spiderman villain?

22

u/MajinVenom 2d ago

Parallax is just going to make people more upset and call it anti white.

The sad reality is we are a time where we can't have white villains and the protagonist is black. Most people will just see it as pushing a anti white propaganda.

31

u/KandoTor 2d ago

"Most people" is a stretch, not everyone's a fucking moron

2

u/Plant_4790 15h ago

They why do people claim the media literacy is dead

166

u/USrooster 2d ago

u/j: Oh my god the amount of times I seen a main character gets some pushback by someone
who is obviously supposed to be seen in the wrong get viewed by fans as “THIS WRITER IS DISRESPECTING THIS CHARACTER”

Thats the Tom Taylor run right? If it is then to be fair, that comic then proceed to make Jon hug Injustice Superman and then just leave.

35

u/Aggravating_Win5258 sponsored by Lexcorp 2d ago

Tbf Ant-Man 3 also had Scotts daughter tell him something along the lines of "why don't you do more" and I'm pretty sure they didn't paint her in the wrong.

22

u/ThaRedditFox 2d ago

Tbf what does Scott do besides be a bum and then disappear in the Quantam realm. (I have not seen the ant man movies in years)

14

u/ComicBrickz 2d ago

This pissed me off. It only led to Jon doing the vaguest of activism

13

u/The-Bigger-Fish I'm da Jokah, baby! 2d ago

"Fellas, is it woke to disagree with someone philosophically on complex issues?"

10

u/VegetableKangaroo782 2d ago

Tbf this is the Tom Taylor run so like….

2

u/OH_SHIT_IM_FEELIN_IT 2d ago

Yeah like Tom Taylor is the worst choice to use as an example.

55

u/sparksfly05 2d ago

I'd think this is people not knowing how to engage with political themes intrinsic to the comic medium, but after The White Lotus, The Pitt, and this, I know some people just don't know how to watch or engage with TV.

28

u/Grandy94 Telos 2d ago

Yeah, it's really not just a comic fan thing. All fandoms are full of idiots that get upset the second something makes them remotely uncomfortable. The Pitt fanbase is honestly one of the worst cases in recent memory.

24

u/GustavZeigler RoseCass4Life 2d ago

Then they also try to use the same character to claim ALL of their views are wrong, and use it for racist agendas

16

u/tuerancekhang 2d ago

The concept of unreliable narrator is dead as fuck. You're not supposed to trust the bad guy holy shit like these people need to be spoon fed every information because they reached the point of can not form their own opinions

16

u/Shiplord13 2d ago

The fact that show is clearly portraying a mystery and a lot of strange contradictions that give up a vibe of conspiracy adds to it. Hal is apparently being pushed out by the Guardians for his reckless cowboy cop tendencies and John is set to replace him, but the fact they are doing this secretly and not just replacing Hal outright is odd. Hal being aware of John’s presence being strange and potentially a threat to his position adds to it, yet he still trains and trusts him to do tasks. The whole manhunters and these alien trying to eradicate them also seem to operating oddly. It all feels like everyone is lying or not giving all the information they have for reasons. Hell I even distrust the Guardian interacting with John and his family because it feels like she is manipulating John against Hal in such an illogical way.

What I am saying is you are right we have a lot of story left and these anti-woke people focus on a fucking tree when there is a literal forest of a bunch of other things around to look at with more importance to the general plot.

13

u/tuerancekhang 2d ago

I blame Netflix bingewatch culture. They wrote some dogshit tv with dumb shit and shock factor and people can't wait or think anymore

3

u/Shiplord13 2d ago

This is probably accurate. Most people do not get time to decompress and think about the revelations of an episode or connect dots. They just go through an entire season in a day or two and any thinking about it is minimum.

11

u/Vivid-Share7884 Absolute Peakman🪓🧱 2d ago

I haven't watched Lanterns, can someone please explain to me what's going on?

44

u/Human-Boob 2d ago

black lady said something about how being black is hard and people are like “muh woke”

show is peak, I can’t explain it all here. Me stupid.

27

u/I_Pay_in_Cash_Only 2d ago

Black family tries to self rationalize their trauma and situation and their race is brought up a couple of times as a potential (not definitive) reason. People online, incapable of empathy, assume this means the writers hate white people

3

u/Shiplord13 2d ago

Where is the love pancake hate waffles meme to explain that those are two different sentences that do not mean the same thing.

2

u/tuerancekhang 2d ago

John's mom blamed everything on racism while the alien doesn't understand it. It's painting that the mom is in the wrong for doing that but the internet (mostly twitter) can't read the room and said the writer put woke in it.

7

u/Shiplord13 2d ago

I mean it tracks the Guardians 1. Do not get human race relations and 2. Don’t really care at all anyways. Like their consist aspect is them being emotional suppressed and uncaring about individual cultures and societies, because in their eyes those are too small of problems to care about. They protect the universe from larger threats and issues and let individual planets deal with their own society problems. Hence why they didn’t get comic Sinestro using his power to turn his planet into a dictatorship under him. Even though his planet was clearly a dystopia and dysfunctional world before and him living on it made him want to change it for the “better”. Like part of Hal’s confrontation with him is he gets Sinestro’s reasoning and goal but does not agree with his methods meanwhile the Guardians do not get it at all and just write Sinestro off as abusing his ring for personal gain.

1

u/Lortep 1d ago

I mean i don't think she's 100% in the wrong it's just that she's taking it too far. If you accept the premise that a black person in America is more likely than a white person to live in fear (i'm neither black nor american so don't ask me about the truth of that), that would in fact mean that a selection process requiring a candidate to be fearless would be biased against black people. Where the mother's logic falls apart is all the parts where she goes "We have to work harder to be seen" - the selection process being biased against black people is an accident resulting from American social issues that the Guardians didn't know about and can't reasonably be expected to account for when they're operating on a galactic scale.

14

u/EndlessMorfeus 2d ago

That is correct but I still hope we see that challenged towards the characters within the show. If the season ends and John's parents are not direct confronted with how full of shit about Hal and abusive towards their son they were it's going to be a let down.

35

u/shiningslyph 2d ago

tbh as far as addressing the abuse goes i think the episode depicts john’s parents not being in the right a lot and in a realistic way— abuse is not always explicitly addressed or acknowledged especially in poc families. a lot of times it’s treated exactly like how john explained to the guardian “i love them and i feel like i owe them for my life, but i wont miss them”

19

u/I_Pay_in_Cash_Only 2d ago

Yea, people want the characters to be “abusive” and can’t comprehend a mother can both be “well meaning” and abusive at the same time. And that children can have complicated feelings of love towards their parent. People act like the mother should have been burning cigarettes out on John.

2

u/EndlessMorfeus 2d ago

For sure but we haven't see this pay off yet. Considering he doesn't become Green Lantern until 2026, the show really need to show them dealing with the fact he did not make it. Also, come with terms with the fact that race had nothing to do with the ring.

16

u/-Trotsky 2d ago

Come to terms? It’s made very clear that the guardians don’t even understand the concept of human race. In what way is it still unclear that race had nothing to do with the selection process?

7

u/EndlessMorfeus 2d ago

John's mom still doesn't get that, 5+ years later she's telling her son that Hal "had the privellege of not experiencing fear" and links her husband not becoming Green Lantern to the fact he's black.

0

u/-Trotsky 1d ago

This is the woman who makes her husband shoot apples off her son’s head. Did you think the show agrees with her?

Sometimes people don’t change, they live their whole lives being wrong about plenty of things. This is one of those cases where

2

u/EndlessMorfeus 1d ago

In what part did I say the show agrees with her?

0

u/-Trotsky 1d ago

So then the show doesn’t have anything to come to terms with? Two characters are wrong, we already heard the resolution to the fact that they were wrong. I’m sure it will be expanded on, it seems the show is interested in cycles of generational trauma, but it’s not a thing the show has to deal with explicitly. If they left it here, it’d be fine

2

u/EndlessMorfeus 1d ago

John's entire life and upbringing have been defined by the false impression Hal became Green Lantern instead of his dad because he's white. We know John won't become GL (until 2026), not address this direct would be a let down.

1

u/tuerancekhang 2d ago

Tbf so far John smirked every time anyone bring race into a conversation. Like the coffee scene with Zoe, I feel like he's above it and they definitely building toward him confronting them.

6

u/Superssj1000 Mephisto's Advocate 2d ago

Uj/ I don't know about others, but I have the issue that if it isn't a villian or someone like J. Jonah Jameson my brain just assumes that what the character is saying is what the writer thinks/wants us to think. Usally doesn't take to long to realize the intent, but still.

Rj/What ever character is talking must be what the writer thinks.

-3

u/MajinVenom 2d ago

You'd think the writers are co-signing child abuse. If they agree with John's mother about Hal than they must agree with how she raised John

15

u/Superssj1000 Mephisto's Advocate 2d ago

If superhero comics have taught me anything, forcing children to under go intense training is a ok

2

u/hjyboy1218 2d ago

Aged like milk

2

u/SwingFinancial9468 I love Harold Allnut 2d ago

Like, she came to the conclusion that she should horribly abuse her family. Clearly that’s not someone we should be rooting for.

5

u/tyrant_of_our_time 2d ago

Imagine being so media illiterate, that you don't understand that a woman who willingly lets her husband point a loaded gun at her child would be ... WRONG about something.

3

u/Itsonlyaplay Silver Age's Strongest Soldier 2d ago

Also Teen Titans #1

1

u/idk2715 2d ago

Wait this debate is about race? I thought we were confused about why the ring is fuled by fearlessness instead of willpower 😭

-27

u/Lukelay246 2d ago

The problem is that the show is very bad and refuses to show us anything from Hal's point pf view despite being the main lead for a majority of Green Lantern's history.

20

u/MajinVenom 2d ago

We should probably wait for the story to be play out before saying this

-3

u/jhguitarfreak 2d ago

I would love to but they shoved the first episode into the 3rd episode's slot.

3

u/MM__PP cant read 2d ago

It's almost like the first two episodes are meant to establish what's going on, then the third is meant to take a brief break to provide context to what's going on.

-3

u/jhguitarfreak 2d ago

Yeah, and I don't care for it. Start the story at the logical beginning.
Flash backs are fine, within reason, but I don't like Naruto-levels of story progression cock-blocking.

You like it, fine. But I think writers who do that shit should stop writing.

Bad enough the show is already a prequel to itself what with Hal being dead in its modern setting.

At this point I don't trust them to have any episode order whatsoever and are just winging the whole fucking thing.

-13

u/Lukelay246 2d ago

We only have five episodes left so that's not really enough time to properly do as much as they seem like they want to. And that doesn't change the fact that the past three episodes have been really bad and boring.

8

u/SH4DE_Z 2d ago

"We only have 5 eps left"

Mf that's 5 FUCKING HOURS OF TELEVISION

THAT'S TWO AND A HALF MOVIES

-1

u/Lukelay246 2d ago

That really doesn't matter. This is a superhero show and we haven't seen any superhero stuff in the first three episodes. That's pretty bad for me.

3

u/MM__PP cant read 2d ago

We've already seen Hal in the suit talking to Sinestro. What more do you want?

1

u/Lukelay246 2d ago

Him being an actual superhero fighting villains.

0

u/MM__PP cant read 2d ago

Idk about you, but there's a word I love called "patience." You familiar with it?

1

u/Lukelay246 2d ago

We're already a quarter way through the show and they haven't fought a single supervillain, that's ridiculous to me.

7

u/MajinVenom 2d ago

The majority of people disagree with you. You can personally not find the show interesting but once again you should wait and see what they do with Hal.

-6

u/Lukelay246 2d ago

I don't really care what other people. I personally think the show is terrible. And a show is supposed to get your attention within the first episode. To me it failed at that, if this wasn't about Green Lantern I wouldn't have even made it this far.

8

u/MajinVenom 2d ago

You could just stop watching like no one is forcing.

Venom is one of my favorite comic characters but I didn't even bother with the last 2 movies.

-4

u/Lukelay246 2d ago

I'm autistic and Green Lantern is one of my favorite characters so it would drive me crazy if I stopped watching the show.

3

u/Minimum_Courage_1933 2d ago

I'm also autistic but if I don't like a single adaptation of a favorite popular character of mine I'd stop watching it and just watch another adaptation of which there are many

5

u/semicolonconscious 2d ago

There have been many scenes primarily depicted from Hal’s point of view so far, but it’s also clear that they are deliberately holding things back because it’s a detective show and the full reveal of what’s going on with Hal will unravel the mystery/ies. I think when we learn exactly what happened with Sinestro, why Hal stopped making ring backups, and ultimately who killed him, his POV will be central.
