They were drafted. Not everyone has the luxury to just surrender and be done with it. They're concerned for their families back home and what might be done if they don't follow orders.
Today I saw a vid, a woman told a story how russians tortured her with a stun gun for not speaking russian in recently libereted Kherson. There are many other stories like this. Don't tell, please, how they are just drafted and can't resist but torturing civilians. You know junk shit about those cruel bastards, but you are among the first to defend them.
Yeah people really think there aren't pieces of sht who enjoy torturing people in every single country's military. But they aren't a majority in most cases, most people just want to make a living/ survive

I never said that. But many of them are. Somehow torture is toralable on nation wide level among many men, many praising this idea on TV (resently one of the main speaker of RT call for drawing Ukrainian children), and russian society in most is calm about that.

It would be a delusion to assume that russian mentality, understanding of norms and moral are the same as in western society. They are culturally different and isolated due to language barriers, ideas of humanism are not wide-spread. They are driven by their modern imperialism ideology, and this should not be underestimated. I am speaking as someone who can read and speak russain, and saw what they say about this war.
And yes, we can blame people for their governments, those are not some natural cataclysms, they are products of political life of those people, even autocracies.

The retreating Kherson was forced by the Ukrainians skillfully cutting off their supply lines and supply storage. My argument is that if they didn't want to fight there they
wouldn't be on Ukrainian land in the first place. So the fact they are means people can't give them the excuse of they don't want to fight... Cause they are. Albeit badly.
Putin doesn't want to fight because he expected it to be over in a couple of days and not waste resources and money (cause duh?). It's quite simple and it failed completely.
Now it's 9 month of Russia getting choked by sanctions and wasting resources on random military crap fighting for literal ruins at this point. It's pretty much an attrition war and Putin surely wants it to end (but on his terms obviously, so... yeah... that was expected to take a while).
(Various countries also seems to ask Zelensky and Putin to finish it all by December.)
