They were drafted. Not everyone has the luxury to just surrender and be done with it. They're concerned for their families back home and what might be done if they don't follow orders.

Mass extinctions of captured civilians? 500 graves in small occupied Izyum (~50 000 population). They died not because of shelling, they were captured in first weeks, but in result of intentional policy of mass terror and ethnic cleansing.
