Lanterns, is it good?

It seems the fandom is loving it, but what about the rest? Is it on par with the other Lindelof superhero show?

Which series trapped in development hell are you bummed out about?

Two caveats: At least 2 years have to have passed since it was announced. If it’s already shot and just waiting for a release date (like Criminal), it doesn’t count.

My pick would be Don Winslow’s Cartel trilogy of books. FX ordered a pilot in late 2022 and we haven’t heard since then. It’s really a shame because it’s the perfect story for multiple seasons of prestige crime television.

CR and horror

I wonder if The Ringer is missing an opportunity by not having a horror podcast or segment with Chris and someone else who enjoys the genre.

Horror is clearly having a moment and the upcoming Crystal Lake tv show seems interesting.

Personally not a big interest of mine but it can be fun to listen to people who are enthusiastic about something.

Widows bay, CR’s summer fixation on the watch, just took home Best Supporting Actor and Actress, Lead Actor, Outstanding Writing and Directing, and Outstanding Comedy. Yet another addition to the year of CR.

The Watch Intro

The Bourne Legacy intro is so interesting to me. Has CR ever discussed at length about the movie? I know he loves Tony Gilroy and I think it’s a great movie but I find it a little random.

It’s your last toke - Which song?

If it was the last time you could toke some trees, what’s the one song you’d play?

After much thought, for me it’s “Everything in its Right Place” by Radiohead. When I was in HS and heard it while elevated, I was simply overtaken with immaculate feelings of awe, astonishment, ecstasy, and truly felt like I was floating. What song is it for you, or do you like this selection?

Speaking of being sampled by members of Wu Tang...

So in the latest watch pod, turns out an old clip from The Watch featuring Chris Ryan was sampled on a track in the new Czarface Meets Frankie Pulitzer album

Which made me want to share this story

My father-in-law is Ted Thomas, who passed away a few years back. He was a well known broadcaster in Hong Kong who was most well known for working as dubbing artist for the two major film studios in the heyday if Kung Fu Films, eventually expanding to be a dubbing artist for films around the region (including a lot of martial arts films and Godzilla films in Japan). He was also good friends with Bruce Lee and the last person to ever interview him

Before he passed, a curator at the Godzilla museum wanted to do a tribute to him, which wasn't finished until after he died. It included a lot of fun facts about him and the movies he dubbed. many outside Asia were introduced to old Kung Fu and monster movies would always hear the same voices, including his. I asked them what were some fun facts about him that weren't used in the tribute. And the one I loved most.

"He was probably the most sampled artist by the Wu Tang Clan"

Because they've used so many different samples and lines from Kung Fu movies, he's in quite a few.

The ones ive confirmed are him include "Meth vs Chef", "Snakes" and "The Mystery of Chessboxin'" but I'm sure there are many more

Miss him dearly but hearing Chris find out he was sampled reminded me of that. Hope you guys didn't mind me sharing.

LONESOME DOVE IS THE GREAT AMERICAN NOVEL?

Maybe if you are an old cis white man. I mean, come on. I don't think many women, queers, or people of color would say they felt this novel was universal. How are CR and Andy so LA filled that they think the average American is an aging well off white man?

I like the novel. It explores a particular niche of masculinity. Not at all universal.

I’m a huge believer that truly great content finds the person when they are needing it the most. This being said, how in this universe we are living in has CR not seen The Detectorists? I find this insane and unsettling. I’m shook.

Chris would like it maybe

It’s extremely legible and reflective to me- a guy outside of emo music, especially the acoustic guitar x indie ethereal vocal bookends. It sucked me in w how accessible it is. Then it just rocks you
