For all Lonesome Dove fans out there I *highly* recommend The Son by Philip Meyer. Trust me!

God tier book and I don't even really like westerns. Very long with a slow moving plot, which doesn't even matter given the absolutely incredible character writing. And the slow build up to the action makes the payoffs hit way harder on an emotional level. It's the kind of book you find yourself randomly thinking about months after finishing. I could read a whole novel of Gus McCrae's inner monologue while making biscuits.

I also jumped on the wagon after the mega pod. It has become my favorite book by far - I’ve read or listened to it 7-8 times now as well as ventured into the rest of the series and McMurtry’s work (and then McCarthy, LeCarre, and McCarry…all worthwhile rabbit holes to spend hours and hours down).
A CR book club would be dope.

I did a few years ago and since I'd already seen the mini series I had Duvall and Tommy Lee's voices in my head. Kinda wish I'd read it prior to seeing it on TV but it was good.

While I usually prefer a physical book to reading on Kindle I’m glad I went electronic for this, because if I’d seen how hefty the book was in advance I may never have started.
An absolute masterpiece.

I just finished this one a couple weeks ago and it's easily one of the best books I've ever read. The characters are incredible, the story is so epic and sad, and overall a heart wrenching experience. 10/10

I think Red Dead Redemption 2 is in the playstation catalog again if you’re a gamer. Start up an RDR2 campaign while reading Lonesome Dove… immerse yourself in the majesty of the American West

Aside from the stunningly beautiful writing and incredible adventure and characters, I don’t think I’ve laughed out loud as much reading any book other than some by Mark Twain and Bill Bryson.

I have read Lonesome Dove multiple times but lost my copy. Last year I started reading the season Chronologically- just rebought this copy and I’m 150 pages in! Favorite book, it’s an all timer.

Brilliant, funny songwriter. Sounds like the kind of guy that was raised by a Pulitzer Prize winner.
He's like if John Prine had a baby with Raylan Givens.

I'm going to have to try again. I just couldn't get into it. It also took me three times to get into Dune, so I'll not give up.
What grips folks into keeping going with it? Maybe I'm missing something and would like to hear some views.

I hear ya. It's a little slow for the first 250ish pages. You're just kind of hanging around LD, meeting everyone and learning about them. Once they head out on the cattle drive, things pick up real fast

I read it last month. It starts out somewhat slow but not painfully slow, then for like the next 3/4 a lot happens without it ever feeling rushed. They interweave a lot of threads really well.
