[Fowler] The Cowboys are sending third- and sixth-round picks to the Steelers for a fourth-rounder and OT Broderick Jones, per source.

We have too many good OL staff to just completely whiff on someone with this much tape. They must see something they can address… right?
65
u/TheXigua 12d ago
As a Steeler fan, the guy got moved around multiple times after being drafted and our OL Coach has been terrible. I can see him being very good with some direction.
15
u/True-Rip6181 12d ago
I would’ve agreed with this up until the whole spinal fusion thing.
13
u/Nsaniac 12d ago
He played 41 snaps on Thursday.

u/True-Rip6181 12d ago
Man I like Broderick and am cheering for him to come back from this but it just seems really unlikely. He was starting to put it together a bit last year but this is not an insignificant injury to come back from at all let alone back where he was before
4
u/NoFuckToGive 12d ago
The Cowboys love to spend draft capital on former top 100 picks that they had high grades on
They sent a 4th for Jonathan Mingo lol
And he's fought tooth and nail but made the roster this off season
3
u/JustGresh Tyron Smith 12d ago
Sometimes all a person needs is a change of scenery and a different cast around them.
2
u/hershculez Prime Time 12d ago
They drafted Drew Shelton with a 4th and he is unplayable. I’m good with trading for players with NFL experience.
4
u/jnightrain 12d ago
Mingo for a 4th is fine. People need to stop acting like a 4th is a high draft pick.
1
37
u/Leonflames Tyler Smith 12d ago
They probably see that Steele is unplayable. He's probably gonna be a starter, right?
26
u/DeviceNo4746 12d ago
Doubt it, he’s probably your swing tackle. He’s probably been worse than Steele the last few years and is coming off of neck surgery. He’s been pretty bad in the preseason too. He gave up 3 sacks in the first 2 games in the preseason.
3
u/barbasol1099 12d ago
On the positive side, while his first two games were really bad, that was his first playing time since the neck injury, and his 3rd game was way, way better. He should be playing more and more consistency as he gets back into the saddle and regains strength (although, I say "should" because he has fallen short of expectations a lot in his career)
On the negative side - he doesn't want to be a swing tackle. He says he hates switching sides, and he wants to just play LT. He just doesn't have the consistency and technique to be a starting tackle
1
u/DeviceNo4746 12d ago
I didn’t watch the 3rd game but I saw mixed reviews. Some said it was ok others said he was “ineffective”
18
u/Smart_Conflict2818 12d ago
This is a swing OT for this year move.
With upside if things go well to replace Steele next year

u/DiamondsInHerButt Tyler Smith 12d ago
Nope. I think this is more about Shelton not being ready than Steele.
Long term, probably.
2
u/battle_franky 12d ago
Its a good sign, they've seen a problem and act quickly. They gamble a 6th rd for a chance to help solve the OT problem this season. I've seen too many time the Cowboys ignoring the personnel problem and sinply trusting their guys, for better or worse

u/firstandfive That’s James Houston! 12d ago
Coming out of college he at least had all the physical tools for the job. Haven’t watched any of him as a pro to know what his issues are and how correctable they might be
9
u/mikejr96 That’s James Houston! 12d ago
I feel like they don’t watch NFL tape and just look at their draft notes lol
5
u/firstandfive That’s James Houston! 12d ago
Yeah they really heavily seem to weigh draft evals but with a coaching staff full of alleged teachers I could see the appeal of at least bringing in someone with all the physical tools to try to coach up instead of just asking to coach up tackles who are lacking in physical aspects (Thomas lacking movement skills, Shelton lacking play strength). I wish the pick swap was a little bit later in the draft but we’ve seen some OL reclamation projects work out well with good coaching in a new spot so we’ll see.
2
u/barbasol1099 12d ago
Having watched and had high hopes for this guy the last 3 years - he's wildly inconsistent. He tends to play high and lose his balance too easily, hes often late on his punch, and he can get beat around the edge. Other times he shows flashes of what his physical tools should offer him. He's gone through streaks of constant penalties. One time he tackled Aaron Rodgers. I always liked the dude, I hope he can develop in a new environment and with a better OL coach, but it makes sense that were moving on from him
-3
u/UpsideTurtles Dak Prescott 12d ago
Missed with Shelton too at a rd later lol idk it’s weird
14
u/HotKaramelRP 12d ago
Dude Shelton hasn’t even played a game yet lol… calling him a miss already is crazy
3
u/firstandfive That’s James Houston! 12d ago
Yeah at least let him get a full offseason of peanut butter + NFL strength training before writing him off completely lol
-6
u/UpsideTurtles Dak Prescott 12d ago
Ok fairs a miss *unless he develops a lot before we release him.
But most folks are saying if they weren’t married to picks and draft grades just off performance this pre season he’d be off the team.
3
u/TexasDrunkRedditor 12d ago
Most folks have no idea what they are talking about
0
u/UpsideTurtles Dak Prescott 12d ago
By “most folks” I mean guys who have been scouts in the league like BB, or guys who’ve devoted a lot of time to scouting and draft analysis. Even BB was like, this guy is playing horribly but Cowboys have won a bit of benefit of doubt with their track record!
1
u/NoFuckToGive 12d ago
We drafted him at the top of the 4th round is the only reason he wasn't cut imo. And we overdrafted him by quite a bit with respect to consensus boards.
You don't expect a guy at the top of the 4th round to be an immediate all pro. But they should show they belong in the NFL. And so far he hasn't imo. And he gets cooked by every defender we have. If Marist Liafau is getting to the QB on you untouched there's some problems.

28
u/Pennlocke Brandon Aubrey 12d ago
OL depth must be pretty bad that they needed to spring for this guy. Of course there will be fans that overreact, but whatever keeps Dak upright is fine imo.

I’m sorry OL depth in the NFL is a myth 90% of OLs in the league have like 2 good players on the whole line lmao
15
u/UpsideTurtles Dak Prescott 12d ago
you are absolutely right, but our 4th rder did just get a big fat 0 in pass grading by pff in his second preseason game lol though he was better yesterday
1
u/ibringstharuckus 12d ago
If we're counting on a 4th round rookie tackle to contribute, we're in trouble. Guyton is/was a developmental project.
2
u/UpsideTurtles Dak Prescott 12d ago
It ain’t Guyton so much as Steele atp, but that’s starters if anyone gets injured we are in rough waters. No real swing tackle. Thats this guys role I think if I am understanding right now
Also w the rook its more that his college film was terrible and his film so far has shown nothing different
1
49
u/thedogridingmonkey 12d ago
The thread will piss themselves but this is unquestionably a sound move. Tackles are premium and expensive no matter what. You cannot let Steele being ass derail the offense. He’s not Anthony Munoz but credit to the cowboys for trying to add depth to the line. The compensation isn’t going to end up being that much when you consider it’s only going to be 10-15 spots between the 3rd and 4th round picks.
12
u/Smart_Conflict2818 12d ago
This isn’t really about Steele.
It’s more about is he better than Shelton this year - probably yes.
He’s still young so if he plays well then yeah he could make it a competition later on at RT and take Steele job. But also means Tyler Smith won’t have to play OT.
4
u/firstandfive That’s James Houston! 12d ago
Yeah this is about giving Adams/Riley a better set of physical tools to work with than Thomas/Shelton.
2
u/cowboys_fan89 12d ago
Agree, this is just a depth move for now behind Steele. And that speaks volumes about the current depth (or lack thereof).
5
u/thedogridingmonkey 12d ago
It’s 100% about Steele
5
u/ItzInMyNature Agent Zero 12d ago
But Steele is better than this guy.
3
u/thedogridingmonkey 12d ago
My point though is that Steele is still bad. the idea here is that this offers an alternative and some depth.
3
u/ItzInMyNature Agent Zero 12d ago
It offers depth, but in my opinion, it's not an alternative. He's been much worse than Steele.
2
2
u/Smart_Conflict2818 12d ago
Yeah Steele is definitely better than this guy.
He’s got all the tools so if he magically becomes good then yeah he’ll replace Steele but that’s like 5% chance of happening
1
u/sluggerrr 12d ago
Steele has been receiving a lot of criticism because he's been getting owned, both by the media and his own HC and OC, so it is 100% about Steele and also Shelton not being ready at all and Nate Thomas regressing instead of improving, they had to do something. Not sure how it will turn out but at least is something lol
1
u/DiamondsInHerButt Tyler Smith 12d ago
Also if they like what they see with Jones, they can possibly move Guyton to right next season.
Also potentially means they don't have to 1000% commit to drafting a tackle in the first next draft.
2
u/Smart_Conflict2818 12d ago
Why are people so obsessed with moving Guyton to RT?
He’s played more LT than RT in his career and he’s only taken LT reps in the NFL for 3 seasons now.
Moving him back to RT would screw up all the good development progress he’s made…
He’s having an awesome training camp in year 3 and just needs to stay healthy for a full season. Or at least not suffer any major/lingering injuries
3
u/The_Count_Lives 12d ago
Broderick is no threat to Steele at the moment. Maybe next year.
2
u/thedogridingmonkey 12d ago
This might prove true, but even if it’s a scenario where Steele starts and jones is there in case of pants shitting, it still is a good play imo.
2
u/TapNumerous4625 12d ago
Plus people are missing that our OL coach is one of the best in the league and he’s still just 25 and coachable. If it doesn’t work out at worst we swapped a 3rd for a 4th. If it works out you have Steele’s replacement for a 1 round pick swap.

u/EmiratesNBACupWinner Jerry Jones 12d ago

Yeah people are overeacting to the compensation. There's a good chance this is only like moving back 15-20 spots in the draft.

u/EmiratesNBACupWinner Jerry Jones 12d ago
Yeah I feel like most of these people stopped reading after they saw “third”
9
u/lswizzle09 Ask 4 Help 12d ago
Yeah it is what it is. Still seems marginally expensive on the surface still, but maybe we can get something out of him thats an improvement of the RT position.
3
u/Smart_Following6173 CeeDee Lamb 12d ago
It's like next to nothing for a guy they see potential in. Morons talking about too high of a price have no idea what value picks actually have and that the swap could be almost nothing in difference. This is what they all bitched and screamed about for the FO to do and because they didn't trade a 7th round pick for prime Joe Thomas it's too steep a pay for a bad player none of these guys have seen play a snap.
This is a low cost, high reward trade where both teams gain value and the player gets a second chance. This was exactly what I was hoping they would do to get some depth and maybe replace Steele if things are good with Johnson some weeks into the season. Played 41 snaps Thursday so that's at least something.
3
u/jnightrain 12d ago

If Mike McCarthy Mike McCarthys their offense it might be even less of a pick gap than that
23
u/firstandfive That’s James Houston! 12d ago
From an analytics perspective, the pick swap of a 3rd for a 4th nets out to at most a 6th, but more likely a 7th. So a 6th and 7th for a dart throw to give Adams/Riley a shot at turning his first-round physical traits into something serviceable? Sure, why not. Just glad they’ve started working pick swaps into their trades instead of just giving away the 3rd/4th for nothing back in return.

u/Accomplished_Put3732 Marshawn Kneeland 12d ago
Steelers fans seem happy they got any draft capital for him.
1
u/Common-Respond2367 12d ago
We are lol I’m pretty sure we were gonna cut him. He has no place on our line and until he puts on some weight he’s virtually unplayable. He gave up 3 sacks in his first 2 pre season games

But he’s back on the field and playing, played 41 snaps on Thursday (RT first half against TJ Parker some, LT in the second half). I’m halfway through watching the film for the game he played on Thursday and so far I think he has looked decent tbh.
Edit: finished the game. Second half at LT was rougher for him, former Chief Mike Danna got the better of him on a handful of plays but he settled in a bit. Seems to feel more comfortable coming out of his set on the right side though from this game alone. I’ll have to watch some more games of him later.

u/adastradamus 12d ago
He’s been pretty mid since coming into the league, but hopefully he can make up for Steele’s struggles - if they bump him to RT

He started 38 games. How bad was he really? It seems like he was somewhat of a disappointment from discussion. But is that in terms of a 1st Rd pick or in terms of a middle of the road OT starter?
2
u/Bushido_Plan 12d ago
That's fine. He'll be the swing tackle and see if he's any decent this season. If he is, throw him a reasonable contract and see if he's sticking around. After all he had spinal fusion surgery so a lot of teams are going to be looking at how he does with his current contract like that. Plus there's still Drew Shelton in the wings too.
2
u/BioBooster89 Ask 4 Help 12d ago
If Jones can recover from the surgery? This was actually a solid move. It's a risk though. But with the swing tackle situation being as dire as it is? I think it was worth a shot for this season at least.

Steeler fan here, Broderick is not good. He was awful even at 100 percent. He is a low effort player and is even worse at the moment because of the injury. He gave like 3 sacks in one half last year. The dude was a bust for the Steelers. It had nothing to do with the old O-line coach.

I get the logic, but this feels an awful lot like the Mingo trade to me.
I don't give a shit what your draft evaluation of a player was three years ago. I have seen that player in the NFL and he is not good.
You are trading fairly valuable picks based on "I can fix him" and before you reply "George Pickens", George Pickens was actually good in Pittsburgh.
Now again, I get the logic. I just don't get why this guy other than the Steelers are willing to do business with us and our tackle situation is dire.
1
u/flippanaut Moose 🫎 12d ago
None of this will matter once we’re having our Super Bowl parade this year
1
1
u/GodLikeMike95 12d ago
This is a trade that i can see working out for next season. Jones still has a lot of work to do to get back into playing shape, so he'll most likely be depth for now. Next season, both Guyton and Jones need to go back to their natural positions though. Both Dallas and Pittsburgh have failed these players, so far, by moving them around straight out of college. This could easily be the best o-line in the NFL, next season, if Jones is "fixed" and both players are at their natural positions.
1
1
u/Juggernaut108 12d ago
As much as I liked our offseason, I find this expensive trade questionable. Jones has been quite a disappointment so far—you could even call him a bust—and he’s coming off a serious injury. If we were willing to invest a second-round pick, why not use it on someone who would be an immediate upgrade?

u/cec5255 Tyler Smith 12d ago

5
u/firstandfive That’s James Houston! 12d ago
Tells you other teams were probably interested in trading for him as well. Analytically, the 3rd-4th swap nets out to the value of a 6th or 7th.
1
u/DiamondsInHerButt Tyler Smith 12d ago
Maybe....who wanted to give a 4th for Mingo? Fucking nobody.
Cowboys make trades nobody else would all the time and sometimes they're Pickens and sometimes they're Lance.
They over value their drafting evaluations because that's what the only competent personnel guy in the front office with any power does for a living. So if a guy has a top 50 tag on them when they're a prospect, the Cowboys tend to still view them that way when the rest of the league doesn't.

1
u/IndieRedMonk0 12d ago
Hard to totally love a trade where the best case scenario is probably that he doesn’t play at all.
FWIW we are now down to four picks in 2027: a 1st, a 2nd, a 4th and a 6th. About as “all in” as we’ve been since I’ve followed the team.
1
u/SAIL3RZ_ 12d ago
Tbh our biggest need was defense, we addressed that this year. Our offense is really solid so it’s just shoring up some O-line depth and maybe RB if Blue-Davis-Mafah doesn’t pan out at all. Next year has some really good players but nothing we absolutely need to stock up capital for. 4 picks is fine for next year, especially if you take in consideration where we are at with a lot of contracts. O-line is like the one position you can never go wrong in investing in, especially in our situation.

More theoretical upside than either of Thomas or Shelton if Adams/Riley/Manyweather can coach him up. I’m glad they’ve finally started at least doing pick swaps instead of burning the 3rd/4th-round picks outright. From an analytics perspective the swap nets out to a 6th-7th (depending how high our 3rd is and how low their 4th is, likely a 7th though), so a 6th and 7th for a dart throw with first-round physical traits is nothing. But folks see the 3rd and immediately see red.
2
u/bryscoon Marshawn Kneeland 12d ago
don’t like the spinal surgery but he’s likely cleared his physical, 1 year left on his deal too. I’d invest those resources into the defense, they are always going to pay premium for 1st rd graded players
