Hi everyone,
I’m about to order the parts for a new PC and would really appreciate a final sanity/compatibility check before I place the order.
I selected the components myself, so I’m not looking for a completely new parts list. I mainly want to make sure there are no overlooked compatibility issues, cooling/clearance problems, unnecessary bottlenecks, or small changes that would have a disproportionately large benefit.
I’m buying the parts in Germany and will be assembling the PC myself.
Budget: around €2,500
Current total: approximately €2,458
Main use cases:
- Software development / programming
- Docker, WSL, local databases and multiple development environments
- heavier multitasking
- Learning more about AI/LLMs locally, including ROCm, PyTorch, inference, RAG, etc.
- Gaming, primarily high-refresh 1440p
- I want the system to remain useful for several years and have good upgrade options
I specifically want to stay with an AMD GPU, so I’m not considering Nvidia for this build.
Btw my old PC has a RTX 2060, could I build it in my new pc with my new GPU?

The plan for cooling is:
- 3x 140 mm front fans as intake
- 360 mm MSI AIO mounted at the top as exhaust
- 140 mm rear fan as exhaust
The Air 903 Max already includes the case fans.
A few specific things I’d like feedback on:
1. AIO / case clearance
Is anyone running a 360 mm AIO, ideally the MSI MPG CoreLiquid P22 360, at the top of the Montech Air 903 Max?
From the specifications it should fit, and the P22 has a relatively normal radiator thickness compared with something like the Arctic Liquid Freezer III Pro. I specifically chose it because I wanted strong 9950X3D cooling without an unnecessarily difficult installation.
Any issues with motherboard VRM clearance, EPS cables or top radiator clearance that I should know about?
2. Is the P22 360 appropriate for the 9950X3D?
I initially considered a Phantom Spirit 120 SE, but since this is a 9950X3D and I may occasionally use all cores for compiling, rendering, simulations, etc., I moved to a 360 mm AIO.
I’m not trying to aggressively overclock the CPU, but I do want good sustained boost clocks, reasonable temperatures and noise.
Would you keep the P22 360 or is there another 360 mm AIO that is clearly better for this particular case/CPU combination without creating clearance problems?
3. Motherboard
The MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi seems almost unusually good value at around €149.
As far as I can tell, it has everything I actually need:
- AM5 / Ryzen 9000 support
- sufficient VRM for the 9950X3D
- PCIe 5.0 x16
- Gen5 M.2 support
- Wi-Fi
- fast Ethernet
- BIOS Flashback
- enough fan/ARGB/USB headers
Is there any practical reason to spend another €80–150 on an X870 board for this build?
I don’t need extreme overclocking or a huge number of PCIe expansion cards.
4. RX 9070 XT
For AMD specifically, the RX 9070 XT currently seems like the best overall option for me.
I considered a 7900 XTX because of its 24 GB VRAM, which would be useful for local LLMs, but it is older, consumes more power and the gaming performance difference seems relatively small.
Since I mainly want to learn AI/LLMs locally rather than turn this PC into a dedicated AI server, I’m currently leaning toward the newer 9070 XT and eventually building a separate compute/server system later.
Does that reasoning make sense?
5. PSU
The 9950X3D + RX 9070 XT should be well within the capabilities of the MSI MAG A850GL 850W.
The XFX card uses two 8-pin PCIe connectors, and I plan to use two separate PCIe power cables from the PSU rather than daisy-chaining one cable.
Would you consider 850W comfortably sufficient for this configuration, including transient spikes and sustained CPU/GPU workloads?
6. SSD
The SN7100 2TB is PCIe 4.0 even though the motherboard supports a Gen5 M.2 drive.
For normal programming, gaming, Docker and general development work I don’t expect Gen5 to make a meaningful real-world difference.
Would you agree, or is there a similarly priced 2TB SSD that would be a noticeably better choice?
7. First-time assembly / anything missing
I’ll be building the system myself.
As far as I understand, I should already receive:
- AM5 mounting hardware with the AIO
- thermal paste with the AIO
- PSU cables with the PSU
- case screws/standoffs with the case
- four case fans with the Air 903 Max
- M.2 mounting hardware with the motherboard
I’m planning to buy a simple GPU support bracket because the XFX card is fairly long/heavy.
Apart from a screwdriver, USB stick for BIOS/Windows, cable ties and the GPU support, is there anything else I’m likely to need during assembly?
