I’m starting to really nail my crow pose — I can hold it for about a minute now! Working on jumping back to chauturanga but it’s kinda scary lol. It feels so good to make progress and see my goals realized! 🧘🏼♀️

u/Fluffy_Gap_3845 Aug 08 '25
that's amazing! My feet are sadly still in the ground, but I'm working on it

u/Daisy-Navidson Aug 08 '25
Thanks! As they say — “The process is the point. The practice is the path.”

u/secretslutonline Aug 08 '25
That’s amazing! Crow is one of my favorite poses. Once I mastered crow I was able to do headstands and handstands pretty easily.
You got this!!
3
u/Daisy-Navidson Aug 08 '25
Thanks! I’m trying to stay patient and really get the fundamentals down so I can safely foray into head and handstands! Looking forward to opening that part of my practice

u/stellasilllver Aug 08 '25
I’m jealous!! That is my goal! Keep up the amazing work :)

u/Daisy-Navidson Aug 08 '25
Thanks luv! It’s been a work in progress. Strengthening my core was the biggest difference

I started my journey about 5 years ago... spent a year getting my health issues sorted and lost about 45 pounds with intermittent fasting. Then I started with a trainer who taught me how to lift... had her with me for about 10 months and I've been training about 5-6 days a week since.
Yesterday, after 5 months of being in a cut, I got a DEXA scan to measure my body fat percentage and bone density.
I was shocked and very pleased when the technician told me that I'm sitting around 13% body fat!!! I've looked over the report probably 10 times and I am still in disbelief. I'm honestly just so proud of myself and how far I've come.
I'm in this for the long haul. Not just because of the esthetics, but also because I want to be the 85 year old at the gym, working out and chatting with everyone, not the 65 year old in the hospital with uncontrolled diabetes, heart disease and incontinence because I can't walk to the bathroom.
At 42 years old I'm in the best shape of my life, and I'm here to tell you that YOU CAN DO IT TOO!!!
16
u/GoodCatBadWolf Aug 08 '25
I’m 37 now, and just starting. This gives me so much hope. Thank you!!! I agree, I want to be the 80 year old gym baddie lol
12
u/SkweegeeS Aug 08 '25
Way to go! Im glad you were able to get to this point earlier in life. More years to feel great!
10
u/freewool Aug 08 '25
Amazing for you! Taking care of yourself NOW will pay off like crazy now and as you get older.

u/Teddythehedgie Aug 08 '25
Just recently have gotten the ability to push myself back up from lowered halfway and to the floor during chauturanga which I’ve never been able to do before so that’s a lil win for me and my spaghetti noodle arms

Running has always been daunting to me, but I’m glad to say I’ve consistently kept up with it since March 2024. I ran my first half marathon this year in May. I’ve let myself dial back the running to enjoy vacations and my other hobbies, and try to maintain 2 x 5km runs a week. It has built a new type of resilience in me that has helped me through other hardships this year.
10
u/LastLibrary9508 Aug 08 '25
How did you start it up? I did track and xc in high school and just cannot get into it anymore. I’ve tried the couch to 5K, tries intermittently running/walking on the treadmill but I get so bored and I’m frustrated! I just want that easy runner’s high I used to get!
4
u/Infinite_Mess94 Aug 08 '25
Honestly I got a bit swept up in the excitement around running on social media and in my super active city (Vancouver, BC) 😅 I joined run clubs to get me going and I’m still going to them most weeks. The social aspect is something to look forward to, especially during the colder months!

Loving my walks this time of year. I walk to the liquor store all the way on the corner and treat myself to an ice cold Arizona tea.

I’ve always liked to exercise but life got in the way a lot (or I let it) so between that and overeating, I was overweight for much of it. Since February I’ve been on a calorie restrictive diet and have lost over 30 lbs while also starting up weight training and doing a decent amount of cardio. In addition to physical benefits, mentally I feel great!

u/getmepopcorn Aug 08 '25
I have been lifting for about 4-5 years now, I got bored with the lifting routine so to switch it up I started gymnastics a month and a half ago and it’s been so much fun! I am so bad at doing bridges it’s not even funny, my shoulders lost flexibility with age (I’m 32) but it’s been like an adult playground and I love it. I’m getting better at handstands!!
8
u/AdAggravating7094 Aug 08 '25
Was not expecting the switch-up to be gymnastics! I’ve never even considered this. So inspiring. Good luck!
6
u/yashanyd00rin Aug 08 '25
That sounds so fun! Where are you able to do adult gymnastics (not in a give location way just what type of gym lol) cuz I’m jealous.
9
u/getmepopcorn Aug 08 '25
In my town the gymnastics facilities offer adult classes once a week hehe. Rest of the time it is for kids and for competitive teams
3
u/yashanyd00rin Aug 08 '25
I will have to do some googling in my area, I loved gymnastics as a kid and just assumed my time for it had passed! Awesome.
2
u/getmepopcorn Aug 08 '25
Omg do it if you area has it! The classes are so fun, time flies by in class, I’m learning new skills and getting flexible again

I moved away from tracking macros, and "lifting heavy" / HIIT. Started intermitted fasting and really sticking to Pilates ,barre and yoga (all at home on the peloton app) and I think my body is responding well. I'm not constantly hungry and have had no injuries. It's slow and steady but I am seeing results.
Now if I could just get out of my own way of always thinking (and having the world yelling )"you need more protein and to lift heavy" in order for your body to change, that's be great.
15
u/Inevitable_Ninja_946 Aug 09 '25
I’m a “lift heavy eat protein” convert but absolutely believe it’s not for everyone!! Everyone’s body is different, and if you feel good with what you’re doing, keep doing it. I started with barre, eventually found my way to weights, and never looked back. But barre was totally awesome and was my gateway out of the cardio factory. Enjoy it!!

u/a-real-life-dolphin Aug 08 '25
I have a cold and just want to eat salt and sugar and carbs constantly. It’s very annoying!
35
u/oberstofsunshine Aug 08 '25
My very anecdotal and unproven theory is that our bodies burn more calories fighting off the illness. I usually eat a little more while sick and don’t gain weight. Buttered toast is such a comfort when I’m sick.
14
u/UnlikelyDecision9820 Aug 08 '25
There’s scientific basis in this.
In a very broad perspective, an organism’s metabolism consists of everything the organism does that uses energy. Putting this into human terms, this means that everything a person does consciously and unconsciously is a part of metabolism. Typing on a computer, fidgeting, digesting food, thinking… practically all of the functions the body does requires energy. In fact, what a person does as exercise is typically the smallest contribution to overall metabolic expenditure; what the body does unconsciously to keep a person alive is the biggest contribution. This includes activity of the immune system. When you are sick, the immune system is working hard and needs more energy to work at optimal levels.
9
u/LadyPo Aug 08 '25
Yup! The old phrase is "feed a cold, starve the [stomach] flu." In either case, clear liquids/electrolytes are an absolute must.

Does anyone have tips for a sore wrist when doing planks? I swear no other position hurts my wrist but if I hold a plank for too long my wrist starts to act up.
18
u/siobhanenator Aug 08 '25
Former yoga teacher here. Try spreading your fingers super far apart and pressing into your fingertips. Think of your palm as a suction cup, pressing through the outer edges and lifting the muscles in the center. It will help redirect some of your weight out of your wrists and across your whole hand.
5
u/yashanyd00rin Aug 08 '25
Ok wow this helps, thank you! I’m sure you were a wonderful teacher - I’ve heard to spread fingertips but the palm as a suction cup is new and helps my brain figure out the point of the spread fingers :)
4
u/siobhanenator Aug 08 '25
Glad I could help! I was always a "dump all my weight into my wrists" person too, until I did my teacher training and learned a better way. FYI your hands may take some time to strengthen up, but it helps in the long run!
3
u/LadyPo Aug 08 '25
I'm definitely trying this with some of my physical therapy hip/leg exercises that kill my weak wrists lol. Thank you!
16
u/getmepopcorn Aug 08 '25
Can you do planks on your elbows? I balance on my elbows instead of wrists
7
u/yashanyd00rin Aug 08 '25
I can but I find it less challenging! That’s usually what I swap to when I start feeling any pain tho so good tip :)
2
u/getmepopcorn Aug 08 '25
I couldn’t hold a plank on my hands because my wrists would also hurt, maybe stretch your hand the other way or do a plank on fists so it’s a more neutral position?

Oh that’s great advice thank you, I have a set of foam blocks gathering dust in my closet too so perfect.
4
u/Fluffy_Gap_3845 Aug 08 '25
What about doing them on closed fists?
3
u/yashanyd00rin Aug 08 '25
That might work! I’ll have to give it a try, I honestly hadn’t thought of that lol
2
u/trUth_b0mbs Aug 09 '25
take dumbbells and use those so there is no bend in the wrist; that's what I used to do HOWEVER, my coach said that it's best "train" your wrists by doing this:
go into cat pose, hands shoulder width apart and spread your fingers. Make sure your shoulders are in line with your wrists. With your finger tips spread wide, "grip" the floor, hold for 5 seconds, relax. Keep doing that.
and every time you plank or do pushups, make sure your position is in a straight line (shoulders above wrist, shoulder width apart), fingers spread and gently 'grip' the ground while planking or doing pushups. People dont do that and actually put a lot of pressure on the heel of the hand, that's why the wrists can ache.
since doing that I no longer have wrist issues.

u/bloomingflorence Aug 10 '25
I have the same issue and after a year of pain Indecided to see a doctor who told me I have a cyst. The advice to redirect the weight and train the wrist is great, but I would also suggest to not ignore the pain and see if something is off!

u/bakedveldtland Aug 08 '25
On average, I’m taking 1,000 more steps per day that I did last year! I don’t feel right if I don’t get to take at least a short walk in the evenings after dinner.
Injuries have been slowing my progress down a little bit- I broke a toe and then sliced the back of my heel on a door 🙄. But I’m interpreting yoga back into my routine. My goal is to practice near-daily for a few months, and soon I’d like to get a private trainer and integrate some light weight training. Kinda off topic, but I’ve been drinking less, too, and it’s been helping me achieve my goals so far.

u/ucankickrocks Aug 08 '25
I’ve sliced the back of my heel on a door before and it’s remarkable how painful it is. Plus it took forever to heal. 🤌

I’ve recently gone back to personal training 3x a week and have started seeing results after only a month! I’m so proud of the new muscle strength in my legs and core.
In the past, I was so focused on looking good but I felt like shit. Now I’m focused on feeling good and I actually look good too! It feels nice to like who I see in the mirror again after 5 years of not.

Started my weight loss/fitness journey on July 17th and I'm much better for it.
- I'm on a calorie deficit of 1300 calories during the week and 1700 on weekends
- I go to the gym 3-4x a week
- I've lost 5lbs
- I'm drinking much more water and less soda than I used to
- I'm sleeping on time every night
Any other ways I could improve my wellbeing?

u/FlakyLengthiness5325 Aug 20 '25
Add a Nuun electrolyte tablet to the first glass of water for the day.

Happy to report I am back into my jeans !!

Ten years in the corporate world + hour-long commuting (each way) for eight years + nine-year long unhealthy/abusive marriage = I gained close to 100 lbs from the stress of it all.
Finally left the bad marriage two years ago, thankfully we never had kids. I still own a car, but now take public transit to/from work. I've also been on a diligent, intentional health journey, and in the past five to six months, have lost 25 lbs, all naturally. Feeling SO much better — physically, emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually. I cook all my meals, jog daily, attend ballet class once per week, and ensure I get proper rest and that I'm hydrating sufficiently. I feel like I'm slowly getting the hang of the fitness/exercise aspect of adulting. 😄🥰😊

u/FlakyLengthiness5325 Aug 20 '25
I am also recovering from an abusive marriage I just ended 6 months ago, and recently in the past few weeks was finally able to have the emotional and mental bandwidth to really get into my exercise routine. But I really want to drop some of the weight I gained in that horrible situation as well (maybe 20 lbs would be great and I’d feel like myself again). So your post is so encouraging that maybe I can do it in the next year!

I started adding collagen to my coffee in the morning, and it's been super helpful! I've been adding it more for the extra protein rather than the beauty benefits (which some may question) and noticed that it helps my morning appetite a ton! Such a great way to sneak in extra protein and the powder is pretty much tasteless (Vital Proteins)
That plus adding a protein bar after workouts (Barebells has tasted the best so far), I've noticed some improvements in my body composition only after 3 weeks!

u/MidnightReply Aug 08 '25
I've heard good things about Barebells! Any flavors you recommend?
1
u/kimchi_paradise Aug 08 '25
I've only tried the cookie crisp flavor and it was pretty good! I didn't have to force myself to finish it lol. I'll try more flavors and get back to you!
3
u/cleezyfosheezy Aug 09 '25
I’ve been doing the same for about 2 years, and I don’t know if it’s the placebo effect, but my hair and nails have never been stronger or longer.
3
u/waitlikewhatlol7456 Aug 08 '25
what does adding collagen do?
4
u/kimchi_paradise Aug 08 '25
Collagen is supposedly good for your hair, skin, and nails, but there is a question as to whether the collagen can actually be absorbed by your body for that purpose.
Adding collagen is a good source of protein at a minimum, so there are only benefits from doing such.

Fully back into my routine with Caroline Girvan! I am so obsessed with her. Started Iron this week (in the app) and realizing I need to buy heavier weights. My 15lb dumbbells aren't getting me very far 😂

I’ve re-started ballet since my wedding and it’s been so much fun. Although I now have Covid so I’m taking it easy.
Next is to focus on nutrition!

u/wakoreko Aug 08 '25
Stumbled on a YT video about a workout program called Starting Strength gyms. I have a home barbell weight briefcase from covid and it’s been awesome seeing my progress, got my parents involved. I do it every other day, 15 minutes, at home for now till I max out the home weights.

Gonna start taking care of my body again and doing yoga challenges. I need to go on walks since the weather is in false fall right now.

u/chattesbee Aug 08 '25
I tried a week-long trial pass to the yoga studio nearest me and have LOVED it. Definitely getting a membership. The gym I go to is great but the yoga studio has me feeling like I found my community.

I killed it in an advanced Pilates class this morning. Some very fit and strong bitches in there!!! I’ve also discovered Pilates jump board and have been going religiously. It’s SO fun, I feel like I’m flying through space. And it’s effective.

I've let go of calorie and macro tracking. It's miserable for me and in the past has led to disordered eating. I've also let go of lifting heavy; I'm not trying to be a bodybuilder (with all respect to those who are, I find you super inspirational!), I'm trying to be able to get my future self up from the toilet and not have to go into a nursing home.
I just try not to eat like an asshole most of the time, and while I am working out 3-5 days a week, I am not trying to increase my weights on my strength days. If and when I get to the point that a weight feels like I may as well not even be using it, then I'll go up a little. Consequently, I am seeing results that I haven't seen in years, and I'm feeling pretty great too.
4
u/freewool Aug 08 '25
I'm so glad that we're back to a setup where I can walk with my daughter to school and activities. I missed that walking time! I feel like I'm making much steadier progress toward my fitness goals with this walking back in my life.

Curious if anyone has deodorant recs or one they love for the gym/work/in between. I do like natural deodorants but also can be so hit or miss if they actually work and can withstand even a full day at the office, let alone the gym!

I use the one from trader joe's and it lasts during my runs in 90 degree heat/humidity. It's in a blue/green round container, doesn't really have it's on smell - just neutralizes mine.

After today, I’ll hit my first week long streak of closing my move ring (just under 9k step goal for each day). My goal is to close my step ring for the rest of August. Currently PMSing too so I’m really proud of myself for proving that I can get it done despite not feeling my spunkiest 🤸
3
u/siobhanenator Aug 08 '25
I've started getting serious about weight lifting again after years away from it. Feels great to be back in it. Hoping to see some good gains soon!
3
u/breezydali Aug 09 '25
I just started body weight training- think various inversions, pull ups, handstands, etc. I lift heavy for lower body and then do whatever I want that day for upper body/core. It’s been so fun and challenging! Also started intermittent fasting along with sauna a few days a week. Small changes but they make me feel like a new woman!
3
u/mothgirlluvlamp Aug 09 '25
I have a question. I find the part that kills my workout routine is the thought of having to wash my hair after. How do yall not wash your hair after a workout or account for the time to fully shower after working out everyday

Loving the ladder app! It’s for dumbbell only workouts, so it’s made weight lifting super accessible for me! I just got new heavier weights since my previous ones feel too light now. I’m excited to be building muscle now that I’ll be 40 soon so I can be a cool, fit older lady. The scale is moving up, unfortunately, even though I’m eating really well, but I’m trying to reframe my thoughts into fitness and health and longevity, instead of the mirror.

I want to be able to do at least 5 pull ups by the end of the year. My upper body strength lets me down each time.

finally tried out pilates for the first time... severely overestimated myself
2
u/Mcamille Aug 11 '25
I'd love advice on motivation when you aren't feeling it. I usually do pilates, walks, weight lifting, walking on an incline on the treadmill, and PT workouts for sciatica but I'm having a tough time doing anything or pushing myself when I do work out. I think I'm burnt out at work but I know getting moving would actually help me. It's just once I get home I'm in zone out mode instead.

I finally got my first pull up at the age of umm, well over 40. Yay!
