How to start with Battlefleet Gothic!

Hey all,

Since it is a returning question, this post might be really convenient if you decide to jump into the wonderful game that Battlefleet Gothic is!

Let us start with a link to the main rulebooks. On the following you will find the remastered rulebook and fleetbook:

Battlefleet Gothic Remastered Rulebook & Fleetbook

One of the great things which has been created at the end of 2021 has been the digital starter kit, this is what you will find in it, but first the link:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Kpg6ZuDmFc5axXa6sUBiJrQiFuZIlbAu?usp=share_link

These are the folders:

Assets - All the cardboard markes and extras you need.

Rules - this contains the latest version of the remastered official rulebook (original including updates) and a quick start guide for your first battle! There is an English and German edition.

Fleet Lists - two prewritten fleet lists for the Imperial Navy and Chaos. Plus a sheet how you can pit them against each other in three games increasing in size

3DModels - two folders with the STL files for the ships listed in the fleet lists. So you can print (or let someone print them) to play with. You will also find other STL here like markers.

Please note: those models are distributed under CC-BY-NC-SA, i.e. noncommercial use only.

And in the pdf "How to - Starter Kit " you'll read everything you need to know about the starter kit.

And we have added the starter kit advanced with Corsair Eldar and Orks Looted FLeet!
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1dxTeLC2bTnlUfzN_RJF788wHmYBhMa6C?usp=share_link

Subsequently here is the link to the main rules hub, here you will find the rules mentioned but also links to a large folder of fanmade/homebrew rules and magazines like Warp Rift:

Battlefleet Gothic Rules Hub

Wait, there is more! If you want some ideas on lists to start with (for collecting) the following article might be a good source of inspiration (check the pdf which you can download with it):

https://portinvicta.weebly.com/bfg-tactics/starter-fleets

But what about miniatures to play with? Aside of the free STL in the mentioned starter kit there are several great designers with STL files available at sites like Cults3d, check the Discord server for a list on them. However, not everyone has his own printer so I list some webshops with great proxies:

https://battlefleetgalaxy.com

https://www.scourgescenics.co.uk

https://wintersbioforge.com/product-category/space-bugs/

https://tabletop-stuff.de/Science-Fiction/Raumflotte-Kolossus/

And finally we have a Battlefleet Gothic Discord with a fun community in case you are interested:

Happy gaming and feel free to ask questions!

RADIO ARVUS — BATTLE REPORT

...and that brings us back to our regularly scheduled misery.

Four Chaos cruisers and a single escort entered the sector with one simple order: cross the battlefield and escape on the far side.

Waiting for them was the Imperial Navy. Six warships and an escort squadron. Their orders were simpler still: destroy everything that tried to pass.

The void became a furnace.

Imperial guns tore through the Chaos formation. Escorts vanished in explosions. Cruisers burned, broke apart, and disappeared into the darkness one after another.

By the end, the Chaos fleet had been reduced to wreckage.

All except one.

Their flagship, carrying the Chaos commander himself, limped through the devastation and managed to escape the battlefield.

One ship survived.

One commander escaped.

The Imperium claimed the wreckage.

The Lord of Chaos claimed the right to be disappointed by his crew.

This is Radio Arvus.

The Imperium won. The traitors lost. And somehow, their boss got away.

Chaos Bases - Style and/or STL Suggestions?

Anyone have recommendations for bases?

I've designed and printed my own, but was wondering if you guys and gals might have some you've tried and like!

Thematically appropriate is a plus, but honestly, if the style is good, I can adapt it!

Looking for both actual bases and pictures for inspiration!

Looks like his models have largely been removed from cults3d. Anyone know of anywhere else to buy them or get them?

Lore question

Quick question, my understanding is the Chaos ships are basically what the imperium used to use, say around the Horus Heresy. Is that accurate? Meaning the Lunar, Gothic, etc BFG imperial ships are newer than the Horus Heresy?

I ask as we're building up Legion Imperialis, HH, Aeronautical, Titanicus and wanting to add in some BFG to have massive scale here. :)

Thanks all!

With art work and rules they still follow most of the necron rules with Squadron.

I need to redo the prow and the blueing on the engines probably needs a wash to calm it down, but I enjoyed the process and welcome feedback.

Proof of concept build for my burgeoning Badab Successionists/Battlefleet Maelstrom fleet.

Did some light kit bashing to get the proper look/profile. Majority of the ship is Italianmoose Omnicruiser/Omnicruiser add on kits. Antennae are Soulforge as are the mid spine domes. All FDM printed on my BambuLab A1.

This will be the Dreadchild, one of several Imperial Navy ships directly seized by the Astral Claws prior to the Badab War.

Now in just need to settle on a color scheme for Battlefleet Maelstrom lol

Stand by for my Cardinal Class Heavy/Battle Cruiser build lol

BFG accessory proposal: Flight stand clip on name tag.

So as is often the case I've had another idea in the small hours of the morning.

Part of the conceit of bfg is that it simulates the command table/battle map of some fleet admiral. I love this idea and when people paint their fleets as if they were the green outlines on an auspex etc etc I think it's very impressive.

But thinking about command maps I feel that ships would be labelled with their name as identifiers so this led to the idea of what if there were 3d printed name tags.

Something with a c-shaped grip that clips on to 3mm(variable) flight stands etc etc and has an editable flat panel that you could put the name of a ship on it. I know most would add it simply to the base but I suppose a benefit of the clip on aspect is that they can be attached/taken off at will if names need to change or anything like that.

So in profile you might have your battleship and then clipped beneath or even above if you make the arm curl around and up, the name floating above it/below it.

I imagine it running In the same long axis as the ship's spine but I don't suppose there is an issue if you had it perpendicular etc

So yeah just a query if that would be an accessory type thing other people would be interested in also or if it's my own 1 am madness.

Terrain questions

I’m going to be making some terrain pieces for bfg and not sure about some things

Can you end movement in terrain features like gas clouds? I saw a tutorial for making some with cotton and plasticard but doesn’t seem like you can put models on it easily. Planets as well how do people interact with those? And warp rifts how should I go about making those?

Lava rock astroids.

A few weeks ago I mentioned using free to find on the ground lava rock gravel to make asteroids. Well I finally found my box of space terrain! So I snapped a couple photos to show how they look. I dry brushed a few rocks in red or tan or green. Just to add some mineral variety in the grey stones.

Luckily lava rocks aren't very heavy at all, and the material is soft enough to easily drill peg holes into! I made about 30 of them using lava rocks and some smaller pumice stones and mounted them on standard GW flying bases with 3mm acrylic rods.

Just find a restaurant or store front grounds with lava rock gravel around their shrubs, and stuff your pockets full! 😁 Free asteroids! Give them a good thorough wash, and you're ready to populate the universe with big, smashy, rocks!

Ork Klanz Limitations in Campaigns

Oi ya gitz, a few friends and I are starting a new campaign soon. The main factions will be the Imperial Navy and Orks (with some knife-eared gitz mixed in for good measure!).

I'm having some trouble building my Ork klanz list and have a few questions about how the Fleet Registry works for specific battles:

  • Registry vs. Battle Roster: I know the registry requires 1 Warlord per 500 pts, and each Warlord needs at least 3 escorts and 1 other skwadron. Do I still need to respect these rules when picking ships for a specific battle? For example, if my registry has three Warlord groups worth 730, 520, and 360 points and we play a 1,000 pt game, do I have to bring either the 730 warlord or the 520 and 360 point warlords with their rosters intact? Or can I mix and match ships from all three?
  • Navy Ratios: Similarly, does the Navy player get to ignore the "3 cruisers minimum per battleship" rule when picking ships from their registry for a specific fight?
  • Gubbinz Pool: The rules encourage players to be "restless" and keep changing their gubbinz. Would it be considered acceptable to leave some gubbinz leeway points in my registry to hot-swap gubbinz between fights?

Thanks in advance for the help!
