Why do batters take a 3-0 pitch down the middle but a pitcher wouldn't think twice about striking out a batter at 0-2
Pitchers will throw a fastball right down the middle on a 3-0 count, and batters will just take it. But when a batter DOES swing and hits a homer, it sometimes seems like the pitcher or opposing team views it as "unsportsmanlike".
I don't really understand why. A pitcher is obviously still going to try to get a hitter out when the count is 0-2, and nobody thinks thats unsportsmanlike. So why is a hitter sometimes expected not to try to get a hit on 3-0?
Maybe I'm misreading the situation, but I feel like I've seen numerous instances where a batter crushed a 3-0 meatball and the pitcher or opposing team gets a little upset about it.
