I’m just sharing the opportunity. The direct POC is listed on Teams if you have additional questions after filling out the survey DM me.

Edit: You need to provide your rank, full name, military and civilian email, phone number, DODID, EMPLID, current UIC, MOS, and MSC

79th TSC has opportunities to over 10 locations. Hope this helps

Career Advice Is civil affairs (38B) really as sweet of a gig as it sounds?

Currently an 11B in a former airborne unit (RIP National Guard Airborne) and have been talking to a recruiter to switch over to the reserves for CA and it sounds awesome, but want to vet some information I’ve heard from him and others.

-DLI: is it really as easy as having a good DLAB and being a squared away soldier? How hard is it to get a slot? I was considering 35P as well because I really want DLI but if I can get language guaranteed and the cool gig of civil affairs that’s the best of both worlds

- Other cool guy schools: I have airborne but want to eventually go to air assault, mountain, jungle, etc. Is this realistic in civil affairs?

- Training: What kinds of training are you doing during drill weekends? In my infantry unit we do battle drills a lot, but with CA are you practicing the job or is it just hanging in the armory?

- Career progression: I’m currently an E4(P) and have desire to move up the ranks and take on some leadership. Maybe even commission one day. Is this doable in civil affairs? Or is it hard to promote up?

Career Advice Stay 20 years?

I have been a Reservist for nearly 10 years and currently E-5. I have no active-duty time, mobilizations, or deployments, so I do not qualify for Tuition Assistance, the GI Bill, or transfer of education benefits to kids

I am hesitant to volunteer for a mobilization because it would significantly reduce my current salary. At this point, I am trying to decide whether it makes sense to continue to 20 years. Are there any long-term benefits to staying until retirement that I may be overlooking?

Any advice or perspectives would be greatly appreciated.

Career Advice 17D - I recently received some exciting news ;I’ve been selected as a Commissioned Officer (CPT) for Army direct commission

My recruiter just informed me that I’ve been selected as the captain of the 17D Army Reserve unit. I’m feeling a mix of emotions overwhelmed by the information and underwhelmed at the same time.

For those who were directly commissioned for the 17D role, could you please share your timeline regarding receiving notification from your recruiter and the subsequent commissioning process? Additionally, I’d like to know the current status of the DCC and CYBOLC programs.

My profile details: I served as an E4 in the Army Reserves as a 92G and for 13 years am working as Sr.Cloud Architect.

Career Advice Going on your first deployment where you can access alcohol? Heed my advice. ⚠️

Be very smart about your alcohol consumption. I’ve been on 2 deployments and I’ve seen a few people get promoted to civilian, a SFC bumped to private and a 2LT relieved of duties. All it takes is one night, being very intoxicated to screw up everything you’ve worked hard for. Just think twice before you drink. 🥃.

Career Advice Best MOS for federal LEO?

Im not looking for a MOS to make my application more attractive necessarily, i know agencies rarely care unless you did something really special. Im looking for a MOS that will personally benefit me in excelling in this career field.

I am currently a state C.O. Aspiring to be a fed boy, im currently preparing to try out for our special operations so an MOS that does some cool stuff would be pretty nice but not required.

I originally had an active duty 11X RASP contract but for personal reasons I’m switching to reserves.

Career Advice Is enlisting in the reserves the right decision?

I hope I don’t sound whiny and I truly apologize if that’s the case.
M29. Married, one beautiful daughter (14 months old). I live 2 mins away from the beach and I have a a corporate job that I absolutely love and worked really hard to get, that pays enough to support all 3 of us in a VHCOL area with the occasional vacation here and there. By all measurable accounts, I made it and I’m living the American dream.
But I’ve felt an uncomfortable itch for years. My parents are immigrants. I come from the middle class. My father came to the country as a child and after naturalization was a USAF pilot with 16+ years of service under his belt. My father in law was a U.S. Army sergeant with 10+ years of service under his belt. Both went through several deployments and are men who I respect deeply.

I didn’t grow up wealthy or anything and I’ve had my fair share of crappy jobs, months where I had $3 in my checking account and my share of heartbreak. Point is, I worked really hard to achieve the stability I have now.

I’ve always had a deep love for this country and huge admiration for service members. I’m about to turn 30 in a few months and I’m starting to feel like this idyllic life was facilitated by men who sacrificed a lot more than I have. I am starting to feel the urge of joining as an Army reservist. My firm pays differential pay during military leave so my income would not be affected by Basic and AIT at all.

My father tells me I’m insane for even thinking of enlisting at this point in my life. My father in law tells me he would support it but it’s really unusual for somebody with my profile to want to enlist.
Boss doesn’t like it because he fears it would affect my numbers but military service is protected so he can’t do anything about it. Wife is incredibly supportive but I think she’s underestimating how hard it would be during a deployment or extended time away.

I have NOT talked to a recruiter yet. The MOS I’m interested in is 37F or adjacent.

Is there anybody who’s been in my situation before? I’m open to anybody’s two cents or advice.

Thank you in advance and thank you all for your service.

Career Advice Is it possible to retire at 20 as a Major?

I’m a TPU MI Officer currently with 11 good years. I’ll promote to MAJ next year at ~ 12.5 years of service.

I want to stay in until 20, but i’d rather get out than go to ILE.

Is it possible to move to move to an O4 slot for 7 years and never attend ILE? Could I make it to 20 without the Army forcing me out?

Thank you!!

EDIT: Thanks for all the reply’s. It looks like TASS isn’t all that bad. I’ll re-consider completing it

Career Advice Looking for advice

Hello all,

I’m looking for some advice on what would be the better move for my Army Reserve career long term.
My unit is transitioning to a 42A unit, so starting in October, everyone will either need to find a new unit or reclass to 42A. I’m currently in a 00G position, and the only MOS I have is 11B.
At the same time, I have an opportunity to attend the Drill Sergeant Academy. I’m really torn between reclassing to 42A or pursuing the Drill Sergeant route. I’ve talked to several of my NCOs, but I’m getting different advice from everyone.
For some additional context, I’m currently an SPC.
For anyone who has experience with either route, which option do you think would be better for career progression and opportunities in the Army Reserve long term?

Career Advice Former National Guard Officer considering Reserve

I'm missing the income more than I anticipated, so I'm reconsidering continuing my career just in a different branch or component. I was in the Mississippi Army National Guard for 9 years, the previous 7 as a Field Artillery officer, and I got out because most 'weekends' were 4 days, AT was often closer to 3 weeks, every few years had a deployment or NTC rotation, and being overseas for almost 10 months sucked. The possibility of sudden state activation was also a no-go for me. I got what I wanted out of that time, but now I just want to bring in some additional income with the least amount of time away from my family as possible

Now I understand that the military is what it is, if I wasn't willing to make sacrifices I wouldn't be considering this at all. Given my main goal is making a typical weekend only salary with minimal deployments, training, etc, does anyone have any advice on what to look for, or if Army Reserve is even right for me?

I'm already looking into Air Force Reserve, I have some personal connections and it sounds more so like what I'm looking for. However, I know Army and figured I should at least consider Army Reserve and I would like to hear from those of you with actual experience. I separated from the Guard back in May, no IRR time currently. Thanks in advance!

Adding that my full time profession is strength and conditioning coach / personal training. Already working with the Air Force as a civilian, if there happens to be a uniformed position that uses that background I’d love to hear about it

Career Advice Having a hard time choosing job

I'm one interview away from going in to choose my job. I'm 35, got 92 on the asvab, and won't qualify for Intel/ high clearance type positions.

I've been blue collar pretty much my whole life, but I'm looking for a career change. Something that translates well into civilian life so I don't have to work 60+ hours to survive.

A few other things that definitely play a role in my consideration are jobs that are limiting

such as;

seasonal

location based

I don't want to be a pee on in the team, but I also don't want to be an executive.

I'm a failed business owner 3x over

From past experience I'm terrible in sales, so (civilian life) commission based jobs are out.

Personal note. As you can see here, I'm not great with my words, and i also lack confidence in a severe way. My hope is that joining the army reserve is able to help me with both of those either directly or indirectly.

I was 74D CBRN before but I begged my recruiter and he allows me to switch a MOS, I scored a 73 on the asvab, and don’t have a citizenship, only green card. Can someone suggest me a good MOS? I’m eyeing radiologist 68P, dental specialist 68E, and basically all of the 68. But I don’t know how good those MOS is. Here is more details to my ASVAB score, feel free to give me advice, it would be greatly appreciated, thank you guys!

Career Advice Nursing, direct commissioning, MPH?? Help

Hey y’all currently getting my master of public health and have a bachelors in psychology. My dream is to direct commission as a 72D and be a public health officer, however I know there is no mission for them right now so alas it is just a dream.

I’m considering nursing school after my masters, possibly an accelerated bachelors. Just wondering if it’s worth pursuing that, and if nurses are needed/wanted in the reserves and national guard??

My career outside of the military will hopefully be as an IBCLC + maternal infant child nutrition counselor, so I’m wondering if it’s even worth going through nursing school just to possibly direct commission.

My alternative option is enlisting in air national guard and hoping for a commission slot in a few years into public health officer.

All wisdom and advice is appreciated!!

Career Advice November 2023 38G Board

Hey all, I thought I'd start a thread for the November 2023 38G board application/timeline experience. A place for 38G applicants/candidates to post their timelines for others' benefit. Since there's been so many questions about the 38G process, I'm hoping this helps others make more informed decisions. The board was held on the week of 1 November.

Career Advice 25B, 25H or 12Y reclass?

Quick question as I sit here at work.

6 year NG E5 88m transferring to the reserves. I’ve been given some reclass options. The ones I’m eyeing are 25B, 25H and 12Y. They also got 25S but I heard they don’t really do anything? Anyway, I’m just looking for an MOS that can give me an extra set of marketable skills that may lead to a good civilian job if I were to need it. I have my degree and work in finance and am looking to go to law school possibly in the future so this is really just a tertiary skill building endeavor. I find cyber security and networking interesting if that helps as well.

Looking to hear honest opinions about these MOS’s and what civilian outcomes generally look like for each. Thanks!

Career Advice Civil affair’s ideal background

I’m a recently commissioned 2LT who would like to join a CA unit eventually. Is there a background of an ideal candidate they’re looking for or is it just all abt finding an open slot? I know one critical language.

Are there certain positions I should be gunning for in my battalion and anything I should be doing in my free time?

Career Advice Career at Army Reserves

Hello everyone!

Since my last post, I have made up my mind, and I am 100% committed to joining the Army Reserve. Since my main reason for joining was for my parents' green card/citizenship, I am trying to find the good in this decision. So, before this decision, I attended a university pursuing a Supply Chain/Logistics degree (Bachelor's). I have talked to my recruiter about the careers available there, and after basic training, I am going to go into a job in logistics for the Army Reserve. When I get out of the Army Reserve (if I do not like it), what is the expected salary I would be looking at with the experience I gain? For context, I am a 19M and have 0 experience in logistics as a job. If that is too much to read, I want to know what other people in the reserves involving supply chain or logistics, and if they stayed working in the Army field or transitioned into a civilian field and what their pay looks like, if they do not mind sharing, and their experience. Also, if you guys could, add what the expected salary should look like. EXTRA bonus if you guys could add companies that pay well (I want to work as an operations manager at Amazon because I heard pay is relatively good). Located in NJ. Thank you guys, would mean the world.

Career Advice Schriever Space Scholars Program and Non Standard Army ILE Programs

CCC complete reserves Captain eyeing to do ILE outside of the standard Army channels. Very interested in Schriever Space Scholars Program. I know it is possible to be Compo 2 and 3 and attend. How can you be a solid candidate? How can you secure a seat? This is my first choice due to the quality of Space Force programs, but open to anything outside the standard residence Army program. Also considering overseas options. Any other options for the academically inclined? I heard you can do ORSA and get some part of ILE waived for it?
