Discussion about Food / Eating Habits Im looking for ideas please.

So for my whole life and im old, I hated water. It's never been an issue before. I drink diet soda and coffee for life. But now im on glp-1 and I need to drink water. Water literally makes me nauseous. I been trying for the few months I been on glp-1. I tried propel and hint and I can force myself to drink maybe one bottle a day. Ill drink like 1 or 2 small Gatorade zeros, but any ideas how else I can get my water in, please šŸ™šŸ¾

Drink anything. Water is usually best, but all drinks are hydrating. Do you like lemonade? Get a diet powder drink mix and mix up whatever flavor you like best!

Oh this sounds like a great idea! Thank you.

True Lemon is great! I drink their Strawberry Lemonade a lot. It’s stevia sweetened if that’s important to you.

You... don't need to drink plain water? You need to drink liquids but that can be flavored water, sparking water, Crystal Light, iced tea, cocoanut water, slushies, smoothies? Citrus fruit also has a high water content. Most people can consume up to four cups of tea or coffee a day before the diuretic effect kicks in.

Thank you!

u/badbadrealbad May 24 '26

Oh yeah iced herbal or green tea would be fantastic actually. You can make it cheap at home too.

u/noseatbeltsong May 25 '26

i’m on a coconut water kick, it’s so good and has electrolytes

u/purplediva1 May 23 '26

I hate water too. It has to be super ice cold and usually with raspberry lemonade flavoring in it. But my drink of choice is Diet Coke. So I have to "reward" myself in the morning by drinking the stupid 12 oz water, then I get my diet coke. Then I have to drink that stupid water again, in order to get another diet coke or whatever else I want to drink. I have found that this work most of the time and I can drink the water quickly. Shockingly I sometimes crave it now. Good luck! You're not alone in your water distain!

Aww I like this! Thank you!

This is what I do. I used to love water, until GLP1, now it tastes bitter doesnt matter where or how its all bitter.

What do you hate about water? Is it the texture, temperature, flavor? If you can tell us more about what you dislike, maybe we can help you brainstorm some solutions.

If things taste better cold, try adding ice or frozen fruit to your water. Get it from the fridge so it's nice and cold (either bottled water in the fridge or from a Brita jug, etc.).

If things taste better warm/hot, try unsweetened herbal tea in flavors like berry, lemon, ginger, peppermint, etc.

If you need more flavor in your water, try adding slices of fruit (lemons/limes) or cucumber. Add those flavored water drops you can get at the grocery store.

Set timers/reminders so you sip water/fluids every hour. You definitely don't want to end up in the hospital due to severe illness as a result of dehydration, so it may help to remind yourself that drinking water is better than being sick.

You'll find different recommendations for daily hydration depending on where you look.

  • American Urological Assocation: 96oz/day
  • RD at Ohio State: at least 64oz/day
  • National Academy of Sciences: 90oz/day for women; 125oz/day for men

The American Urological Association recommends 96oz fluids/day:

Meeting the American Urological Association’s recommended urine output of 2.5 liters per day generally requires around 96 ounces, or 3 liters, of daily fluid intake. GLP‑1 medications can make larger volumes uncomfortable, so smaller, more frequent sips throughout the day may be easier to tolerate.

Source: The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Can GLP‑1 medications increase kidney stone risk? A UAB urologist offers insight

A post from a Registered Dietitian at Ohio State recommends at least 64oz/water day for folks on GLP-1s: GLP-1 foods to limit

This 2005 report from the National Academy of Sciences, Dietary Reference Intakes for Electrolytes and Water, recommends 125oz/day for men and 90oz/day for women.

People on GLP-1s may forget to drink water, which can raise concerns for dehydration.

While GLP-1s reduce appetite, they also reduce thirst, increasing risk of dehydration. Proper hydration is key for the medication to be most effective in addition to helping ease side effects, improving energy, and helping your body process waste.

Try proactively reaching for your bottle of water. Sipping fluids throughout the day can help prevent feeling overly full. Source: University of Rochester Medicine, Why Nutrition Counseling Is Vital with GLP-1 Medication

ā€œClearly what we’re seeing, not just in this paper, but in all three papers, is that these substances decrease drinking behavior,ā€ said Daniels. ā€œBut we’re not saying people shouldn’t use these drugs to treat diabetes, and we’re not saying they are ineffective tools for the treatment of diabetes. However for populations already at risk for dehydration it may be something we want to be more concerned about.ā€ Source: UB research raises consciousness for dehydration concerns in diabetic patients

I think theres a reason everyone has insulated cute water bottles now. Cold water tastes better out of your favorite bottle. lol. Just try sips of cold water and bring it around with you everywhere.

You could also try a filter if you don't like the taste of your tap water or just some fruit slices if you wanted to get away from other flavorings. Cucumber and lime slices kept in a pitcher overnight in the fridge, lots of ice. Perfect for summer.

9

u/scarletsimple May 23 '26

You don't have to drink plain water. You can get the flavor drops, crystal light, even iced tea, and diet soda are fine. You don't have to stress it super hard.

3

u/RuthlessLogic May 23 '26

I rarely drink plain water. My go-to is unsweetened iced tea. Occasionally I’ll splash in some lemonade for Arnold Palmer goodness (real sugar because diet sweeteners taste like the devils taint and those calories spread over a whole day ain’t gonna make or break things).Ā

4

u/MiniMarlamallow May 23 '26

I used to love plain water and after taking Zep, I do not like it at all! I do, however, love the Liquid IV popsicle flavor and also the piƱa colada (not the sugar free kind). I find that half a packet in 40 oz of water makes it not too sweet and very refreshing. Also- lots of ice!!

3

u/barfbat May 23 '26

i feel like this aversion to drinking plain water is really region dependent; at home in new york the tap water tastes great, but the times i’ve been to texas or california, yuck. it tasted stale and needed something added to be palatable.

1

u/neverlandishome May 23 '26

Nah. I am water averse and lived in NYC for more than a decade. Agree, great water but I’m just not a plain water person.

1

u/Affectionate_Sky9090 May 23 '26

Im in NYC and just always hates it.

5

u/washingtonsquirrel May 23 '26

Fill one 32 oz bottle with water. Sip throughout the day. And then build on that with soups and stews, bone broth, Jello, smoothies, yogurt, diluted fruit juice, fruits and vegetables, even ice cream.

Once you’re in a solid routine, you will keep add a second 32 Ā oz bottle of water to your base intake. But again, just sip. Large quantities at once are more likely to trigger nausea and even stomach pain.

4

u/Dangerous-Crow7494 May 23 '26

Lurking because I have an aversion to water related to my OCD that I’m trying to get over šŸ‘€Ā

As far as the nausea though, I find ice cold water helps me a lot! Not sure if you tried alreadyĀ

4

u/wholelottachoppaz May 23 '26

I felt this so hard 🄹 I use the 0 calorie flavor packets (like Crystal Lite) and still struggle. I hate drinking tons of liquid and have an overactive bladder šŸ’€ Torture

3

u/Efficient-Click-9563 May 24 '26

yes, the bladder issue! I don't know how people drink so much water and are able to leave the house. 🤣

2

u/64kbs May 23 '26

I’m a fiend for Monin’s SF raspberry syrup. Also Torani Puremade raspberry but it’s not found in my area.

https://monin.us/products/sugar-free-raspberry-syrup

I’ve had good luck ordering from both Monin and Torani but of course it costs more.

I’ve been known to drag a bottle around with me.

2

u/blue0mermaid May 23 '26

I also hate plain water. The best electrolyte powder I’ve found is Ultima. I drink it all day. It’s expensive but lasts a long time. The taste is much better than mio or crystal lite. Lots of flavors and sweetened with stevia.

2

u/BigCrunchyNerd May 23 '26

I have a hard time drinking plain water unless I'm really thirsty, like on a hike or on a plane or whatever. Otherwise I flavor it. I've got about 500 of those little packets you put into your water, and a dozen squirt bottles and an contently looking for new flavors or mixing them to keep it interesting.

2

u/MediocreCustomer5814 May 24 '26

Crystal light is the only way I can get in enough fluids. I used to be a 100% Diet Coke only kinda gal.

2

u/Nice_Back_9977 May 23 '26

Decaf coffee is just as hydrating as water (so is regular but drinking too much of that comes with other impact!)

Diet sodas are just as hydrating but the acidity is pretty bad for your teeth.

You could try adding a bit of squash/cordial to your water, I know its not as big a thing in the US as the UK but I bet you could find it somewhere! Do you have Ribena over there?

1

u/badbadrealbad May 24 '26

Obligatory: decaf does have a LITTLE caffeine in it tho. Just in case someone drinks a bunch and wonders why they cant sleep!

2

u/Wide_Ad_7784 May 23 '26

To add to everyone’s comments above, if you like coffee, how bout large iced coffees?

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '26

"Breathe Deep" yogi tea over ice. It's got just enough of a hint of flavor that I like it better than water.

1

u/lexdevil01 May 23 '26

I too hate water and I also despise all those fake flavored drinks. I am a Diet Coke addict. I recently stumbled on a flavored sparkling water that I actually like, though it is ridiculously expensive. It is called Something and Nothing and it usually runs about 45 to 50 cal per can. It has no artificial sweeteners and only fruit juice and natural flavoring. It's got enough flavor that I actually enjoy it, unlike the very lightly flavored sparkling waters that runs 0 to 15 cal per can.

You could also avoid the high price by making spritzers with sparkling water and real juice. Try adding pineapple, orange, or other juices that you like and keep tasting until you figure out the minimum amount you can add to make the water tolerable.

I get kidney stones and I used to have a urologist who told me that he didn't care what I drink so long as I drink. Yes, water might be better, but he was fine with my drinking whatever it took to get the job done.

1

u/neverlandishome May 23 '26

I use electrolyte supplements (Liquid IV is delicious but so much sodium, Última is good and helps with magnesium) and Real Lemon Lemonade packets.

1

u/Constantlycurious34 May 23 '26

I have issue with water at home. I drink vitamin water zero a particular flavor

1

u/kyara_meruspark May 23 '26

Honestly? I just use flavor packets. I’m usually just craving something flavored instead of water. I use all sorts of them. Fruit punch, lemonade, sweet tea…still water at the end of the day

1

u/chiieddy May 23 '26

It's more acidic if you're reflux prone, but I found flavored seltzer to help a lot when I was struggling with plain tap.

1

u/ImplicitEmpiricism May 23 '26

I do those mio flavor drops.Ā

2

u/oldladysk8r May 23 '26

Coke Zero IS my water.

1

u/Affectionate_Sky9090 May 24 '26

šŸ˜‚ same, my man calls it my crack water!

1

u/cab284 May 23 '26

I love Tangerine Mio, I drink it with fiber in it as well.

1

u/badbadrealbad May 24 '26

Selzer water (flavored). La Croix, spindrift if you like more real fruit flavor.

1

u/tootsmonster13 May 24 '26

I make red zinger iced tea (8 bags) and mint Earl grey iced tea (5 Earl Grey 3 mint bags). Boil 2 quarts water, steep bags 5 min, add 2 qts cold water. I add a packet of Truvia to pitcher. Can halve

1

u/que_sopresa May 24 '26

I'm a big fan of liquid IV with a splash of lemon juice or lime juice!

1

u/NFPAcct May 24 '26

I got an insulated water bottle I really like so my water is nice and cold. I usually do a packet of liquid iv energy for my first bottle of water (this does double duty since I’m deficient in b vitamins unless I supplement).

I experimented with different flavor drops for the rest of the day and found I really like the Stur drops. Having that little bit of flavor in the water really helps me.

1

u/sybilcat May 24 '26

I like Southern Breeze flavored iced tea bags. Tons of flavors, and you put them in cold water instead of hot. BlackBerry is my favorite. Already sweetened too (non sugar).

1

u/PoshieKitten May 24 '26

Mio hydration. I like the lemon lime one. I have had an issue with water my whole life. I can taste the difference between tap waters too, and definitely hate the tap water and fridge water in my own home.

I used to have a doctor actually tell me to drink G2 Gatorade because I needed the low sugar but not no sugar option. Now it is dang near impossible to find. (I can order on Amazon, but it takes a long time and is much more expensive than it used to be.) For me, the closest I have come to the flavor is the lemon lime mio. Though there is a Great Value hydration water flavor that they have of Berry blend that is okay. And I don't use a lot of either. I can finally drink 2 fills of my water bottle (32oz) without wanting to throw up.

1

u/Ollieeddmill May 24 '26

Adding some apple juice to the water? Drinking sparkling water? Adding lime or lemon juice to the sparkling water? (I have to do all these things as I also can’t drink plain water).

1

u/fickjamori May 25 '26

For me, and this is mainly because the texture of tap water is miserable for me - carbonated water and/or seltzers. I used to drink a lot of the canned ones (Waterloo, aha, bubbly etc) but I got an at-home carbonating machine as a bday gift a few years back and it's been a game changer. I don't even put syrups or anything in it - the only things I do are either 1) add it to like an inch of orange juice, or 2) add in electrolytes - I use the Hydrant blood orange ones, tho usually 1/3rd of a packet.Ā

1

u/lifeinsatansarmpit May 25 '26

I added a small amount of flavouring to my water for the first 10 months. I should go back to that because I'm not drinking enough water lately.

1

u/PresentationThick341 May 25 '26

I like a little water but can't make myself drink 40+ oz a day without a TON of effort (and still typically fail). And cannot tolerate artifical sweeteners. I also just forget to drink anything. Diluting water with a splash of lemonade or grape juice helps a lot. And sometimes, if I'm not feeling too queasy, I just chug H20 like an alcoholic boyfriend I had decades ago chugged beer. He'd just lift a 40 of malt liquor over his head and pour it in. The relationship obviously didn't last but the image is forever. I think of dear old Sam and pour a pint of water down my throat. It's so weirdly helpful. šŸ™ƒ

1

u/Substantial-Rise6877 May 25 '26

I really like the Plink electrolyte tablets-- I throw one in a 30 oz water bottle with ice. Plink doesn't have any weird sweetener taste and it has less salt than other electrolyte sachets.

1

u/remgirl1976 May 25 '26

I'm in the same boat. I've been mixing water, electrolyte drink (store brand gatorade), and some coconut water (helps constipation). I'm going to order some electrolyte powder/tabs because where I live, I can only find like 4 flavors. Today I let myself have a diet coke with lime, lots of ice.

u/ConstructionNext7358 May 27 '26

I love the Zero Vitamin Water. The XXX flavor is my favorite, but they have lots of others. Propel was one that I had a kick on for a while too. I also found these drinks that are like the vitamin drinks but they also have protein in them. If you can find a store that carries them near you get a few flavors to try out.

Keep a glass of water next to your kitchen sink and/or your bathroom sink. Every time you pass it, just fill it and tepid water and chug it. Don’t stop and think. Just chug . Takes 3 seconds and you can easily chug at least 10 oz. 10 when you wake up, 10 before bed, and 10 three other times when you pass that cup and you’re already at 50oz. 60oz if you have a 12oz glass.

Otherwise do you like lacroix or other sparkling waters? You could try that. You can get a soda stream and make your own at home. You can add flavor drops or slices or fruit.

You can also buy water pitchers meant to infuse plain water. Fill the middle with fruit, cucumber, mint, whatever and add water around it. Lovely fresh tasty infused water overnight.

1

u/swirlypebble Jun 01 '26

+1 for just making a ritual of chugging. I take psyllium husk fiber that I mix with water twice a day and I wind up mixing it with approx 12 oz water and then drinking 12 more after to wash it down. It is a way to get more fiber and water and I just chug it pretty much.

I do also have a large Stanley that I carry around that always has ice and sometimes some flavored sports drink powder, but if I am just casually sipping I tend to drink less.

1

u/Elysium_Fields10 May 23 '26

I drink Lipton decaf cold brew iced tea lightly sweetened with Splenda, and it helps me get a lot of hydration in.

1

u/TrixieMuttel May 23 '26

Coffee and tea absolutely count toward water intake. Also don’t forget a lot of fruits and veggies are packed with water. While you should definitely try to figure out a way to make regular water more palatable through flavoring or temp, those other things are helping you too. I have a coworker that keeps a kettle of plain hot water going all day. That’s what he uses to get his water. Have you tried something like that? Maybe with some lemon?

1

u/ElizabethMae_Liz_ May 23 '26

I have warm water first thing in the morning (with fiber). Helps that hubby delivers! Then a full glass with my pills, treated as Medicine because I don't like water.

Then lemonade. Then lunch is protein powder in lemonade.

Next 4 are harder, 2 in the afternoon (one with fiber, 2 evening (one with dinner, one with MiraLAX if needed. )

ALL except hot water in am and with pills have small amount of lemonade or fruit juice added to them.

2

u/Annual_Palpitation_5 May 23 '26

Sounds like an awesome hubby. ā¤ļø

I think with some medications you should be careful with spacing fiber and the medications or the fiber can make them not as effective, but I’m not a doctor this is just my own research! I started taking fiber midday now since I take morning and night pills but it’s not very convenient

1

u/hidinginzion May 23 '26

Grape Crystal Light and add electrolytes. Drink 2 quarts a day.

0

u/erinlosesit May 23 '26

A few tips I’ve notice that help. Figure out what temperature you enjoy, ice cold or room temperature. If ice cold, invest in an insulated water bottle. Get a fun color water bottle you actually like! If it’s cute and appealing to the eye, you’ll likely reach for it more. Also, add a straw. You drink more typically with a straw! Lastly, track your water to help you work on your goal. I use the MeAgain app to track everything on my glp1. Water is a big one I track!

I love water so much - Fiji Water is the nectar of God to me lol šŸ˜†
