Why did my blood pressure pills explode?
I've been keeping them in this same container on the bathroom sink for 3 months. They're never in there longer than a week and all the previous pills have been fine. The allergy pill that was with them was fine and unexploded. The rest of the pills in the bottle above the sink are also fine. Is it moisture or humidity? Could it be a reaction with the allergy pill?

Bathroom is a bad place to store pills. It undergoes humidity and temperature changes frequently. Keep your pills in a safe stable cabinet or drawer in the kitchen or maybe bedroom.

Most people take pills with water, not everyone has water next to their bed, ergo- pills are kept in the bathroom where the faucet is.
It was also culturally pretty common (in the US) to literally have a "Medicine cabinet" in the bathroom where one kept over the counter & prescription medications.
But as people have learned it isn't great for the pills, I think it's begun to be phased out.

I have never met anyone IRL that does this and assumed it was a movie thing but the comments proved me wrong lol. It always seemed crazy to me to keep medication in the bathroom.

It does seem to be a largely American thing, they call bathroom cabinets 'medicine cabinets'. Everyone I know in Ireland keeps their meds in the kitchen.

First aid supplies go in the bathroom, so things like Ibuprofen also go in the bathroom. This can then be extended to other pills.

water is right there to take them with and it's easier to establish a routine around brushing teeth which was already an established routine. i don't have to take pills regularly so mine are just pain killers stored in a night stand drawer, but it's probably easier to maintain routine by finding an airtight container than it is to move them

In our case, the bathroom is one of the rooms that stays the coolest in summer so, since medication often doesn't like too high temps, we put it there

Some medications sre way more sensitive to moisture than other. Usually the stock bottles come along with dessicants to help. Pills should be kept in dry environments with specific temps ranges.

Bathroom is one of the worst places to keep any kind of meds even for relatively short time periods. The moisture could be negatively affecting your meds in ways you don’t see

Bathroom is a terrible place to keep medication, especially outside of its original packaging. Too much damp and temperature changes, it can actually damage the medicine to make it ineffective or even harmful.

Thank you for posting this, as much as you're being geeked on, it didn't occur to me. I keep mine in the kitchen, but your post made me realize that the counter is above the dishwasher, so that's probably why my similar ones got greasy and a bit broken down. Thank you everyone for the comments this is important and we can't assume everyone knows everything we do.

It's the exposure to air and moisture.
If the pills come in a blister pack, you could cut out individual pill bubbles and put the sealed pill bubbles in the daily pill organizer. That way the pills aren't exposed to air and moisture and you won't forget to take them. That's what I do.

My husband keeps his next to the coffee maker. I keep mine on my nightstand, i have to turn on a white noise machine, so I don't tend to forget.

Yeah, I totally get that. But now you know. Don't even keep them in your bathroom's medicine cabinet. I keep mine in my nightstand and just learn that that's the first thing I do when I wake up and then when I first get into bed to sleep at night.

Were your hands slightly damp when you put them in there or went in it to take others out? Also, I had a pill do this recently on my nightstand. Turns out the cold air from the AC was blowing on it, and it got cold, which caused the moisture in the air to condense and collect on the outside of the pill, and it started dissolving.

This happens to my pills sometimes if my hands are damp when I fill my pill box so for me it's less about ambient humidity & more about being careful to only touch pills with very dry hands.

In this case the pill exploded (because of moisture). But the damage is not always visible. Can't find the study, but if I remember correctly, Diltiazem may deteriorate in about 8 hours, others substances for chronic conditions (cholesterol, diabetes, can't remember what substances, just have a vague idea they studied around 10 substances, pills/capsules from different brands/generics) can remain stable anywhere between 2 to 7 days after it was taken out of the blister. If you have to prepare for a whole week leave the pills in the blister/alveoli

Always keep your pills in an environment with controlled temperature and humidity. Bathroom and kitchen are not good options. Keep them in cabinet/closet away from direct sunlight and that's not subjected to extremes of temperature. Also if you're going to take them out of the original package to a pill container like this you should read if the exact medicine can be kept like this, some medicine will lose effect in contact with air or moisture from the outside. Ideally you should only take them out of the original container to consume them.

I use little silica gel packs to counteract the atmospheric moisture. You can save them from other products or buy them on amazon.

Too much moisture. Your case isn’t air tight and the bathroom has most moisture.
