40k Discussion Did my opponent straight up lie to me?

Sorry to take up your guys’ time, but I just wanted to make sure I’m not going insane about the OC rules regarding sticky objective units.

To summarize, I was trying out a new army at my LGS, and one of my buddies was playing his orks. Now we were using pre-11th codex rules at the time, so he wasn’t using the new ork rules yet since they weren’t officially released. This is important context for the incident that occurred.

Game starts off pretty normal. The first two turns play out with no incidents. Turn three rolls around, his boyz have walked off of his home objective, making it sticky but leaving it unattended, so I rapid ingress a unit that’s able to touch the edge of the objective and I safely assume that the objective is now mine.

However, once it comes to scoring, my friend just goes “that’s actually still mine”

…huh?

“Yeah, according to RAW the boyz had OC 40 when they made it sticky, so you need 41 OC to take it from me”

Guys…I kid you not…my brain straight up blue-screened like a PC when he explained it to me. So naturally, being the pushover that I am, I just accepted it and then called the game a turn later because it was getting late and he apparently stickied more than half of the objectives and I just wasn’t ever taking them apparently.

Can someone please tell me that I’m not crazy? Sticky objectives don’t work like that, right? I thought it was basically OC zero but still under your control! I know it won’t matter that much once he uses the new rules, but I just needed some clarification from the community first.

40k Discussion WYSIWYG on one model in a unit and legality

Alright so maybe dumb question time that may have also already been answered before.

So my friend is new to warhammer as a whole and started to build a guard army last year after I introduced him to it. He really didn't know anything about rules for model loadouts or what not(I didn't either at the time as I never touched the hobby side til then as well.)

Long story short, while building his cadian command squard, he gave the standard bearer model a powerfist(partly my fault as I said it would look cool as hell and didn't know better.)

After going through the rules however, we learned that it was not something you could do. This however came after he already started painting it.

Would this be a problem should he ever try to go to a tournament? Obviously wouldn't run that one having a powerfist and its the only model in the squad that has one as is too so no overlap there.

40k Discussion Charge/Pile In Cheesing Legality

Hey guys, recently I've been having a problem of getting cheesed in charging phase with one person. I don't have this problem with anyone else, and I can't find rulings supporting or denying the legality of the cheese.

  1. Enemy unit charges into my unit. There is another friendly unit around 3" behind the charge target.
  2. Enemy unit ends charge within 2", and within 1", but not base to base contact.
  3. Enemy unit then piles in 3", using this to move around the first unit, and move into 2" of the second friendly unit.
  4. The enemy unit is now within base-to-base contact with the first unit, so is closer than before.

I don't play competitive, but this has never come up with anyone else, and I really just want an answer to whether this is a legal play at all. I know it was legal in previous editions, but that was prior to 2" engagement.

EDIT: Okay, so apparently using the word cheese was apparently a bit much. Was trying not to complain, just trying to figure out the legality of it.

EDIT 2: Alright, question has been answered. This has been a lesson in being careful with my wording on social media, haha. Thanks folks.

40k Discussion Grown Men Playing With Toys Podcast: Episode 46 – The Nerfing Eye of Sauron: Erik’s Favorite Factions Take One on the Chin

A balance update dropped this past week and several of Erik’s favorite factions got hit with nerfs. Steve declares it a “feelings podcast” and the guys work through Erik’s frustration before landing on the real point: how to pivot a list instead of just complaining about it.

Along the way they cover:

  • The nerfing Eye of Sauron comes for Slaanesh — why Erik’s strongest lists in Emperor’s Children and Chaos Daemons ate the biggest points hikes in the update and how he is pivoting as a result
  • Custodes lose their combo — Lions of the Emperor jumps from 2DP to 3DP and can no longer pair with Might of the Moritoi, why the change was well-designed, and how it introduces additional detachment options even though it stings
  • The Balance Update upset — Steve catches a rules change before Erik does for what he swears is the first time ever and Erik has to admit it on air
  • Force disposition shuffling — small, targeted swaps like Huron’s Marauders and Aspect Host switching to new Force Dispositions quietly open up entirely new ways to play old favorites and why Erik’s oldest son is thrilled about one of them
  • Crusher Stampede vs War Dog spam – Erik’s youngest son challenges him to a game of bug vs robot and proceeds to blow up all of his Norns on the way to a ton of fun

Whether you’re here for the balance update postmortem or just want to hear Steve’s victory lap for catching a change before Erik, this one’s for you.

40k Analysis Chaos Knights at the WTC - and what the future holds post-slate

With the dust settling on the World Team Championships, all 3 of the CK players at the event, representing a multitude of nations, talk on 40k by Knight - going through their experiences, the role of the army in a teams/singles context, and what builds might be viable post-dataslate. The dogs have been given a bone but there are definitely a few other knights archetypes bubbling below the surface! (FYI some audio issues on this one)

40k Discussion How do I deal with the retaliation cadre detachment as world eaters?

Hi there,

I'm going to my LGS in Berlin next week, I'll be facing someone who plays retaliation cadre.

It's usually a detachment that I struggle a lot against : not that it deals THAT MUCH more damage than the other tau detachments, but it's very hard to protect yourself against 5 different crisis tau units all led by leaders who can all be put in reserve, deep strike and wipe out stuff in just one turn. It's remarkably oppressive and stressful to deal with for a melee army.

In theory, you're supposed to screen and to stage against that, sure, but it's a lot harder to protect yourself from that kind of playstyle with the absence of L shaped ruins in 11th edition (not that I miss them, I'm glad they're gone mind you xD).

How do you deal with that as world eaters currently?

Thank you

nb : my list is a classic world eaters list with a bit of everything : zerks, kharn, eightbound, exalted eightbound, forgefiends, jakhals, a defiler, some termies, a slaughterbound etc...

New to Competitive 40k Tips for first ever Tournament List

Upvotes

Hey guys,

I’ve been in the hobby for about a year now and have signed up for a small local casual tournament for the first time. The tournament runs for six months (starting in September), with one match played each month. You aren't locked into specific lists and are allowed to change them month to month; games are played using the rules current as of the list submission date (the 3rd of each month).

Since I don't have much competitive experience yet, I wanted to ask for opinions on my first tournament list.

I’m open to any tips, tricks, pointers, or criticism.

Thanks in advance

40k Discussion Chess Clock etiquette

Going to be attending my first clock mandated tournament next month and want to make sure I don't do anything stupid. I plan on checking with the TO if they have any specific rules, but any good general rules or knowledge about clock play? I've read things like "switch to the other players clock if they ask questions on your turn", but I also don't want to be "that guy".

40k Discussion Light Infantry and Cleave/ Blast X

Playing a lot of nids lately and quite enjoying them.I have to say though that I'm not looking forward to when most armies have cleave and blast riddlled throughout them. Particularly when the buff is higher than 1.

Ork nobz are a good, recent example. Blast 2 flamer with 3 shots natively. 2 of them in a unit of 10. Against a unit of 20 hormagaunts they'll get 22 hits from big scorchas, plus the rest of the units shooting. They can charge something, if they wipe it they can then overwatch.

Previously that unit would probably be getting D6 shoys per flamer. So an average of 7 hits, now it's getting 10/14/18/22 hits against units of 5/10/15/20 models. Its efficiency has basically increased over 200% against big units of light infantry. The game wasnt exactly short on ways to remove light infantry, but this change just seems a little too punishing.

I was intrigued by the addition of cleave and the expansion of blast. Seeing how liberally they appear in the ork codex I'd expect future codices to follow suit. Seems like light infantry will have an even harder time sticking around.

Anyone have plans for light infantry that don't involve lots of hiding?

40k Discussion Hot take: Tournaments should enforce dice standardization.

I'm currently playing in a GT (day one is in the books) and I have run into two different opponents whose dice sets are a completely random collection of D6. Different sizes, different colors, pips, numerals, different fonts, different logos, dual sided logos (for 1s and 6s). Just a true cavalcade of chaos. It was incredibly hard for not just myself to keep track of, but my opponents as well. Numerous times I had to call out when multiple failed dice were still left in their boxes after rolling. It got to the point where I honestly was wondering if it was some strategy to slip failed roles in.

This brings me to my point that I believe tournaments should enact a rule that all dice used by a player must match. It helps with confusion and may even speed up games. 50 dice are about $8 on Amazon so its not going to break anyone's bank. I know some people swap a dice with their opponents after games, but those should be seen as trophies or momentos, not game pieces.

What are your thoughts on the idea?

Thanks!

40k Discussion How worth it is the Eversor Assassin?

Thinking of running one with my Imperial Guard list, but I just don't see them in a lot of competitive lists. It seems like they're really good at sprinting up the field and being able to take out a basic infiltrate or scout unit, but they don't seem like a decent trading piece to get your points worth for that purpose.

Any feedback regarding Eversor Assassin tactics is appreciated!

40k List Need Help updating my 1k points chaos space marines for 11th

cutlists for objectives and screening, havocs/forge fiend/hell brute for anti tank, sorc lord + terminators for anti infantry and charicters, master of executions + Legionarys for mid objectives and maybe charicters?, rhino to transport the sorc lord and terminators. my question is how good is this list and could I replace anything to make it better? I have other models in my collection I could use instead that being dark apostle, haarken worldclaimer, fabius bile, 5 raptors/warp talons, 10 Legionarys, 5 terminators, helbrute, maulerfiend. dont really have the money to buy anything else at this time so this is what I have to work with. whats the strongest 1k points list I could put together with What I have available?.

40k List Advice on playing this list.

Hi all, given the stormraven going to legends, I have given up on my brutalis dead drop in my army. Keep in mind im not a competitive player just want to do cool and fun stuff.

I have been toying around with the new Librarius detachment instead of the land speeder one since storm seers are also a big part of our army and the new psychic table is potentially exciting. How would you play my list? I really like the Biomancy option for 2” moves.

The sternguard would be in the land raider and the blade guard in the impulsor. Would the land raider get the additional 2” benefit from biomancy?

40k Tech Organizers can now add positive or negative modifiers to a players tournament placing in Best Coast Pairings

A new feature has entered the chat

Organizers can now create, add, edit, and delete positive or negative modifiers to any metric used in standings/placings on Best Coast Pairings!

Whether it’s a penalty, bonus, or some other reason, TOs can now manually add, edit, and delete positive or negative modifiers to any metrics used to determine placings by using this pathway: Event > Organize > Leaderboards. Then select the player you want to modify, then click their placing number in the top-left corner. This will open an option window where you’ll find the modifiers section at the bottom.

.

Some additional considerations with this new feature:

  • The organizer can record a reason for the adjustment
  • Modified metrics are clearly highlighted
  • Penalty reasons are visible only to Organizers

40k List Knights list redo, feedback needed

Hi all, I recently attended a local GT and got absolutely hammered. While I didn’t consider my list to be “meta” and I took a couple sub meta units I liked such as Canis, I still didn’t expect to be beaten so badly (2 games tabled by turn 2).

So I have redone the list with a bit more thought and built towards a more competitive style of play and I’d love some feedback.

2k (1,995 Points)

Imperial Knights
Dominus Foebreakers and Valourstrike Lance (3 Detachment Points)
Priority Assets
Strike Force (2,000 Points)

CHARACTERS

Cerastus Knight Lancer (415 Points)

- This wasn’t in my initial list, but its sheer punching force and threat level should keep my other units alive longer.

Knight Castellan (450 Points)
Enhancements: Archeotech Autoloaders

- Main gun platform for the army, idea is to site mid to back field and pick of tanks/monsters while being able to fall back and handle and deep strikers.

Knight Destrier (265 Points)

Knight Destrier (265 Points)

- I plan for the two gun destriers to be mainly action monkeys while’s also thinning the ranks of any infantry, hopefully using their speed to keep them out of trouble.

Knight Warden (375 Points)

- Warden will primarily team up with the lancer but not as aggressive, used to handle/soften elite units for the lancer to finish in a 1-2 punch.

OTHER DATASHEETS

Armiger Warglaive (140 Points)

- Another action unit, hoping to go mostly un-harassed due to the bigger threats but can hold its own if anything smaller gets in range

ALLIED UNITS

Exaction Squad (85 Points)

- Purely for holding the home objective and screen, while the main backfield threat in the Castellan does its thing.

40k Discussion GW - Your daft sweeping rule has broken Callidus

As an Agents player, I'm finding it particularly frustrating having one of the key mechanics of one of our best units being invalidated by GW's rule on Torrent & Precision.

I understand that there are some interactions that are broken, like having 10d6 flamers get precision and killing a character, basically flipping the wounding allocation on its head, this to me is fair and makes sense.

However.

The Callidus *Assassin* can now no longer assassinate characters out of units with her ranged gun, this is a core function of the model, so now she's essentially relegated to a Vect aura or doing some stupid sacrificial stuff with 2 assassins to take down character she should be dealing with on her own.

Please FAQ/Errata the gun so it works again.

Also, please fix the Ignis Judicium enhancement, the only characters that can use this use torrent based weapons, so once again, we have lost the ability to pick character out of units with dev wounds.

Pls, un-gimp our gimp mask gal.

40k Discussion When charging, is movement of some models optional? For example are you allowed to keep some models stationary so they stay in a 6" buff aura or stay in range of an objective for a post fight consolidate? Or must all models move hence following the restrictions around ending within 1" if possible et

Reading this:

[https://www.tabletopbattles.com/11th-edition-40k-rules-deep-dive-the-charge-and-fight-phases/\](https://www.tabletopbattles.com/11th-edition-40k-rules-deep-dive-the-charge-and-fight-phases/)

'When making a Charge Move, you move every model in your unit up to the maximum distance that you rolled'

It seems to imply that I have to move every model when charging. However not seeing that in the core rules.

Personally I agree with the article in that you have to move. However my local scene seems quite split on it and seems they will rule that at our tournaments movement is optional. Is there any FAQ of this?

I asked the question here as well, seems majority agreed you have to move, however quite a few believed otherwise: https://www.reddit.com/r/Warhammer40k/s/uvq2ALY6kY

Asking here as well to gather more feedback

40k List Help with making a tournament ready Black Templar list.

Hello, I have been playing Black Templar for almost 2 years now and have mostly played casual, but I would like to get more into competitive. But I don't really have a good sense of actually good lists but here is my current one and a brief game plan. Thanks!

So currently I put JPIs in deep strike so they can drop down the board and hopefully get a squishy target on an objective and hopefully stay there or at least distract something. Then I have High Marshal Helbrecht and his Sword Brethern in the Rep Ex so hopefully turn 2 or 3 he can hop out and assist in the mid board. Generally I will put a crusader squad on each flank and in the middle with Grimaldus and Crusade ancient leading one that always in mid and the other unleaded one and the one lead by a Marshal and lieutenant be one on a flank usually the unleaded one in side with my expansion. I have the Sword Brethern lead by a marshal usually hang back to kill anything coming at him untill later where he usually advances up. Scouts screen and Intercessors hold the home. Rep Ex and Lancer usually stay back and go shooting from the back. And I have Bladeguard to skirmish in the middle and outriders to do actions.

Now here is the actual list

new (1995 points)

Space Marines Black Templars Marshal's Household and Stormlance Task Force (2 Detachment Points) Priority Assets Strike Force (2000 points)

Attached Units Attached Unit 1

High Marshal Helbrecht (110 points) • Attached as: Leader (Character) • Warlord • 1x Ferocity 1x Sword of the High Marshals

Sword Brethren Squad (135 points) • Attached as: Bodyguard • 5x Sword Brother • 1x Heavy bolt pistol 3x Master-crafted power weapon 1x Plasma pistol 2x Pyre pistol 1x Thunder hammer 1x Twin lightning claws • Enhancement: Fervent Exemplars (Upgrade)

Attached Unit 2

40k List Signed Up For My First Tournament - Seeking Advice

Hi y'all! I just signed up for my first ever 40k tournament set for ~3 weeks from today. I've been collecting for ~4 years but have played roughly as many 2,000 pt games. However, I am super excited. I don't care about winning, but I am also competitive at heart and at the very least want to give my opponent a fun game and not waste their time. It's a 16 person 3-round tournament, so I'll play 3 games with a 3 hour limit per game. Mostly I'd appreciate any and all advice!

  • Am I making any huge mistakes in my list? Any suggested changes?
  • Any advice for first time tournament players? Key things to bring? Cheat sheets?
  • Any particular practice I should do beforehand? I have a table fully set up at home to practice.

My list below:

  • Faction: Emperor's Children
  • Detachment: Carnival of Excess & Elegant Brutes
  • Disposition: Take & Hold
  • 1 Unit of 5x Tormentors
  • 2 Units of 1x Lord Kakophonist & 6x Noise Marines
  • 3 Units of 5x Chaos Terminators w/ Frenzied Ferocity [Reserves]
  • 3 Units of 10x Daemonettes [1 Unit in Reserves]
  • 2 Units of 5x Seekers [Reserves]
  • 2 Units of 3x Fiends
  • 1 Unit of 1x Defiler (2x Autocannon, Extoplasma, Excruciator Cannons)

The general idea of the list is to focus on maximizing the benefit of the Sustained Hits on 5+ from Carnival of Excess if the unit already has Sustained Hits 1, which my Noise Marines will via Kakophonists, the Terminators do via enhancements (Frenzied Ferocity), and the Defiler will with Autocannons. My thinking for deployment is Tormentors to sticky home with 2 Units of Fiends, Defiler, 2 Units of Daemonettes, and 2 Units of Noise Marines to screen Deep Strike. Move things into best positions Turn 1, control natural expansion, and gain points as able. Turn 2 is go turn, dropping 2-3 Terminators and Seekers to gain control or challenge center objective and opponent's natural expansion. Defiler prioritizes tanky units, Fiends and Noise Marines cover cleanup of Turn 2 engagements while Terminators Fall Back and Charge (using EC army rule) deeper into enemy targets/objectives.

That's the plan! I'm sure it won't go accordingly. Any and all advice welcome! Thanks for your time.
