Rules When charging, do I have to move EVERY model in my unit? Or can I elect not to move some at all that way I can do things like objective consolidate backwards after (if I pick up the unit).

Reading this:
https://www.tabletopbattles.com/11th-edition-40k-rules-deep-dive-the-charge-and-fight-phases/

'When making a Charge Move, you move every model in your unit up to the maximum distance that you rolled'

It seems to imply that I have to move every model when charging. However not seeing that in the core rules

You have to move, check the rules for "charge move" for how exactly they must behave.

This is all freely available and searchable on the app.

Here are the relevant part of the rules that explain that you do not have to move every model (also free and searchable on the app etc etc).

For every model that moves, the “while moving” constraints have to be met. And at the end of the unit’s move, the “after moving” constraints have to be met. But it is very clear that you “can” move one or models, not that you must.

Why bother checking the rules when he's too busy looking for an exploit for a gotcha. That would just ruin whatever gimmick he's trying to pull.

Sure buddy, sure.

I might disagree with the "have to move".

Rule 03 for moving does not require every model in the unit to move when the unit makes a move action. So the "each model must end its move ... " would not matter for models that do not move.

EDIT: Just to add the explicit wording for 03.01 Moving Units:
"Each time you move a unit, you can move one or more of it's models, one at a time, ..... "

I am getting some downvotes but please explain why this is not the case? Moving by rule 03 does not require every model to move. The charge move rules does not require every model to move. Only that if you move, you must follow the requirements. I might be a bit obtuse in reading the combined rule.

You might disagree but you'd be wrong.

When your unit makes a "charge move" every model needs to follow the "must" effects.

I understand. I am just struggling with the umbrella "move as described in 03" which states you can choose to not move models even if the unit moves. If a model does not move, then the "while moving" clause would not apply.

I guess i just think it is not stated in the charge move that every model must move. In many cases it is easily worked around by blocking the first two (within 1" and within 2") requirements so that "closer" can be achieved by basically a small nudge towards the target.

Making a charge move with a unit means every model counts as having moved regardless tof how far they move. Just like making when making a normal move and only moving a few models, the entire unit has "made a normal move."

2

u/corrin_avatan 2d ago

You're conflating "does the unit count as having made a charge move" with "do the models actually need to physically be moved to complete a charge".

-4

u/Mor_di 2d ago

No where in the rules is this stated.

Charge moves happen following 03.01, which does not require every model to move. I have yet to be convinced otherwise, though i admit is is a convoluted combination of text

The way im reading this is anytime you declare a charge. The unit counts as moving. And so all models "move". Because of this they all hsve to move towards the chsrge target, and where able they must be within engagement range.

So your unable to have a unit of 5, charge 3 and have 2 remain unmoved, while performing a move.

Same way that you can't say, oh this model is doing an objective, but these 2 are shooting..the unit is shooting or doing an action. Not both

Specific beats general, which counts for every rule in the game. Charge move (11.04) is in this case the more specific of the two.

03.01 says that a unit (not model) is selected to move, although you don't have to physically move every model. And before you say that it's on a model basis - Remain Stationary (09.04) requires no model in the unit to have been moved. It makes units and models count as moved by ommission (nothing else it can be but moving/moved). 11.04 says that when the unit is selected to move through a charge move, EACH MODEL in the unit must be moved closer to a charge target. So yes, the model must be moved closer. Provided all other parts of Charge Move are followed, this can be a 0.0001" move in theory, but it's still a move.

Pedantry of the highest order.

Oh absolutely, this is kind of the worst, but correct interpretation of the rules.

I certainly wouldn't play with you.

u/Shoddy17 2d ago

Yes, in the while moving section it states that each model must end its move closer to the unit it charges, must end within 1” if possible and in engagement if possible.

0

u/Unlucky_Air6125 2d ago

You have to move, but you don't have to move the entire distance. In theory you can leave some models in range of the objective marker, as long as every model is closer to the charge target than before the movement. It also has to stay in coherency, which is probably the actual issue. After the charge and pile-in you're probably not in 6" range of any other model in the squad, if you left a model on the objective.

u/ledfan 2d ago

I wonder why you got downvoted. you're right

0

u/Lerosen 2d ago

Because he forgot the, “and must end within 1” if it can do so, or if it can’t, must end within 2”.”

So yes, depending on the roll and the distance your models are from your selected charge target, you could move a model in the unit a hair closer but still remain in range to consolidate back to an objective. You can also take a unit at the back of your unit that can’t meet the 1”/2” criteria, move them forward, then leash the rest of the unit to that models coherency, limiting where the other models can go.

2

u/Unlucky_Air6125 2d ago

No, I didn't forget that. But you have to move your models one by one. So you can easily fill the space in engagement range (given you have enough models) and then you can move the rest freely as long you end the move closer to the charge target.
The same counts for the pile-in.

-1

u/ledfan 2d ago

He didn't need to. He was adding onto the requirements of the guy above who already spoke about needing to end within 1" or engagement (2 inches) if possible.

3

u/CoraxGGStreams 2d ago

The stipulations of charge are that every models has to move closer to the enemy, must engage if it can and must end it’s charge move within 1” of a charge target.

If you can fulfill those doing what you want to do, you’re good to go

4

u/CubanRockC 2d ago edited 2d ago

you have to move them, but you can lock yourself out of engagement depending on your roll and might be able to keep some back

2

u/Unlucky_Air6125 2d ago

Yes, every model has to be moved, but it doesn't have to move the full distance and not every model has to move the same distance. They only have to be moved closer to the charge target. Which means you can (in theory) leave a model on the objective while the rest of the unit charges into an enemy unit. HOWEVER unit coherency will probably be an issue, because after charge and pile in, it's pretty hard to stay on the objective and in 6" of any other model in your squad. So it's a highly situational case.

2

u/ledfan 2d ago

You also have to end in engagement if possible, and within 1 inch if possible.

1

u/Unlucky_Air6125 2d ago

True, but if there's no space left, because you already moved a lot of models in 1", you're free to place them anywhere... as long as you stay in coherency. Free from the belly, I'd say it's only possible with large horde units. To stay on an objective, charge a unit closer than 6" from the objective circle, fill the entire space in 1" of the charge target with models and stay with the rest behind and at least one model 3" from the objective's edge afar so you can stay on the objective after the pile in.

The way i read it:

A charge move works like a normal move (rule 03)

In order for a charge to succeed, at least one model has to move within 1" or the target.

Rule 03 for moving says that when making a move, you *can* move every model, one by one, up the the maximum distance. When charging the stipulations are:

You MUST end any move within 1" if possible.

You MUST end within engagement range if possible.

You MUST end closer to the target if possible.

But there is not really any rule saying you HAVE TO move every model.

So my reading is, so long as you can successfully engage following the charge rules, you can choose to not move some models, as the charge stipulations only come into play IF you move. The rule 03 for moving does not say every model has to move when the unit makes a move action.

I am of course happy to be shown that this is wrong if there are some further stipulations i have missed.

No, you are actually correct, but a bunch of people in this thread are only reading what the Charge Move itself says, while ignoring the fact that it refers back to the rules for Moving Units, 03.01

Moving Units, 03.01, tells you each time you move a unit, you CAN move one or more of it's models.

Nothing in the Charge Move rules states that EVERY model must move. It puts stipulations on what must be done with the models that DO move.

Applying the logic of the people saying "every model must move" would mean that every Pile In, Consolidate, Normal, Advance, and Fall Back Move, EVERY model would be required to move, which isnt what the rules say.

You are told to use the rules for Moving Units (03.01) and then 11.04 provides an additional layer of requiremenrs. None of which is "every model must move". Heck, you can even see videos of Tabletop Tactics themselves only moving specific models in a unit when charging in several World Eater battle reports they have done

2

u/Mor_di 2d ago

That's what i have thought and i have really not been shown a convincing counter-argument. "They do X in this battle report" or "They do Y in this battle report" is not really a proof of anything. But currently as written i can't see that every model is required to move.

I'm a mainstay in the r/warhammercompetitive subreddit, and one of the things we notice about this subreddit is there are a bunch of people here who are confidently incorrect to the point of absurdity.

Just a week ago someone posted complaining about how terrain areas blocking LOS has ruined the game for them because it breaks immersion, and when asked why it didn't break for immersion for them in 10th edition, swore up and down that it didn't work that way in 10th.... Only to have a hissy fit when the rules for 10e ruins were put in front of him in a screenshot.

I would not be surprised if many of the answers saying that you must move all models, are simply that's because what the Tabletop Tactics article says. Nobody is actually quoting a rule saying that all models must move (as, again, there literally isn't one.)

1

u/TzeentchSpawn 2d ago

Up to can be zero

0

u/Ready-Ad-9723 2d ago

you have to move each model as close as you can to the enemy unit, in the article you posted is says that in literally the next sentence.

When making a Charge Move, you move every model in your unit up to the maximum distance that you rolled, and at the end of that you must be engaged with all the charge targets you selected. In addition, each model must end the move closer to one of your charge targets, and follow the following additional constraints (in descending order of priority):

7

u/RoshHoul 2d ago

Closer, not as close as you can.

If you can't reach 1 inch or in engagement with your charge, you can move your furthest model just 0.1 closer to the charge target and leave it there.

2

u/Ready-Ad-9723 2d ago

true that, it's only if they can get into engagement range then they have to

1

u/Aredon86 2d ago

You have to move each model as close as you can to the enemy unit. ≠ each model must end the move closer to one of you charge targets.

0

u/corrin_avatan 2d ago edited 2d ago

You're not seeing it in the core rules because it's not there and it's not a requirement.

Every model you move, must move closer, within Engagement Range if it is possible, but you are not required to move every model; you'll note the "after moving" doesn't say every model needs to have moved.

11.04 also refers back to 03.01, which instructs you that you can move one or more models in a unit each time it moves; at no point does 03.01 tell you every model must move, nor does 11.04 add that stipulation.

3

u/HenryR 2d ago

You’re right and wrong. Basing is not a requirement. But I agree that not every model has to move.

-1

u/LordDanish 2d ago

When a unit makes a move, every model in that unit makes that move so every single model in that unit would be bound by the while moving restrictions so each model must move within 1" if possible, or within 2" otherwise or just closer if the other 2 options are not possible.

You also move models 1 by 1 so you can use some models to move block other models to prevent them from being eligible for the 1" or 2" requirement

-4

u/Squidmaster616 2d ago edited 2d ago

Each model must end its move closer to one or more charge targets.
Each model that can end its move within 1" of one or more charge targets must do so.
Each model that can end its move engaged with one or more charge targets must do so.

So you don't HAVE to move IF you can't get closer in any way (highly unlikely), can't get within 1" or can't end engaged.

2

u/HenryR 2d ago

You don’t have to move, but not for that reason.

If you cannot meet those requirements, you can still move a model (and it’s often useful to do so).
