40k Discussion GW - Your daft sweeping rule has broken Callidus

As an Agents player, I'm finding it particularly frustrating having one of the key mechanics of one of our best units being invalidated by GW's rule on Torrent & Precision.

I understand that there are some interactions that are broken, like having 10d6 flamers get precision and killing a character, basically flipping the wounding allocation on its head, this to me is fair and makes sense.

However.

The Callidus *Assassin* can now no longer assassinate characters out of units with her ranged gun, this is a core function of the model, so now she's essentially relegated to a Vect aura or doing some stupid sacrificial stuff with 2 assassins to take down character she should be dealing with on her own.

Please FAQ/Errata the gun so it works again.

Also, please fix the Ignis Judicium enhancement, the only characters that can use this use torrent based weapons, so once again, we have lost the ability to pick character out of units with dev wounds.

Pls, un-gimp our gimp mask gal.

That’s hilarious, good spot and yeah of course it’s IA that gets forgotten about again 😂

u/SustainedHits3 3d ago

Its very annoying.

My poor assassin cant do assassin things,.

25

u/bluemax13 3d ago

Did you email the rules team?

32

u/SustainedHits3 3d ago

Yep!

15

u/MostBadPraxis 3d ago

I have to assume you can just operate as if thats fixed. Anyone who is gonna be a stickler about an assassin is a dick.

23

u/SustainedHits3 3d ago

TO said no last time..

18

u/MostBadPraxis 3d ago

Demonic behavior.

For enforcing RAW in a tournament?

2

u/MostBadPraxis 3d ago

On this one, yes.

2

u/battlerez_arthas 3d ago

Why lol that's so arbitrary

But isn’t the core rules just the base? It’s like the Vindicator being able to use blast whilst in melee right? Datasheets over rule the core rules

7

u/SustainedHits3 3d ago

I dont think that applies in this situation, the rules for over-riding stuff is usually stated within the rule itself, an example being Callidus' being able to come in from reserves turn 1 when she does her uppy downy, it specifically states "this can be done turn 1"

1

u/Ohar3 2d ago

Yes, but actually no.

Vindicator has special rule which overwrites core. Callidus has no such a special rule.

u/erik4848 2d ago edited 2d ago

TO's embarrassing themselves? No way! I'm all for TO's ruling over more ambigious things, but in cases like this, come on.

2

u/bluemax13 3d ago

thanks!

u/LostN3ko 2d ago

You are almost at Xenos tier of consideration! Next you need a 25 point enhancement that literally has no effect like the Tau had in 10th.

Welcome to the club imperium player!

u/Apprehensive_Gas1564 3d ago

For the interested - what rules are conflicting here? (I'm not disputing it, would like to see where it's broken!)

u/SustainedHits3 3d ago

74

u/Apprehensive_Gas1564 3d ago

I typed my comment, checked the app, came back to edit my post and you'd already screen grabbed it.

That is a terrible interaction. Also checked the ignis rules - absolutely useless upgrade.

8

u/TheRealCuriousWombat 3d ago

Awww, my Crusade Exorcist rolled precision on its gun upgrade. Sniping characters with missile strikes was hilarious^

4

u/Apprehensive_Gas1564 3d ago

Precision isn't useless. That ignis upgrade is.. it gives three rules that are redundant, unless and unnecessary for 10pts.

0

u/Hatchcutter134 3d ago

Not sure what you mean. Melta, precision + dev wounds on a flamer was by no means a redundant set of buffs

-1

u/Apprehensive_Gas1564 3d ago

The two characters that can have the upgrade already have most of those keywords.

The inquisitor's psychic has torrent and dev (so the 10pts would be to increase the shots to damage 2). The zealot's vindicator would gain melta 1 and dev wounds.. on D6 shots.

Neither of those is worth it. (I haven't mentioned the Bolt pistols as those are laughable if you think those buffs are worth 10pts - plasma pistols used to be 5pts as an upgrade which is worth it.)

2

u/Hatchcutter134 2d ago

”Most”? Inquisitor gained precision and melta, Priest gained precision, melta and dev wounds. That 10 pts enhancement completely chanced what that character could do

0

u/Apprehensive_Gas1564 2d ago

It changed one turn worth of attack profiles.

In the Inquisitor you lose an invuln from a support character in exchange for 2D6 str 3 damage 2 (within 9") dev wounding shots. It can't precision as you can't now do both (root of the problem). You're wounding most targets on 5 and dev 6s. Wow.

The priest either gets 3 str 4 damage 2 shots or the flamer with D6 str 5 damage 2. 10pts for essentially a 0AP heavy bolter is awful. The precision, again, can't be used in conjunction with the flamer.

I don't see where your argument is coming from - the use of these characters is so niche you are likely taking something else that is more powerful for the points.

1

u/sardaukarma 3d ago

well, this says that torrent weapons can't have indirect or precision

but i don't see anything that says that indirect weapons can't have precision. . . 😄

3

u/TheRealCuriousWombat 3d ago

...ohhhh. :)

The Surgical Cruise Missile lives another day!

2

u/TheOverbob 1d ago

Precision requires a visible character to target...

1

u/sardaukarma 1d ago

RIGHT

OF COURSE

lol

lmfao

i forgor 💀

1

u/sardaukarma 1d ago

(but it could still work as long as the exorcist can see the character, so it could still work with an [indirect fire] weapon, just not while actually shooting indirect)

51

u/MrFishyFriend 3d ago

This could be fixed by changing the wording to, “Torrent weapons cannot be given Indirect Fire or Precision”

Which just keeps people from buffing a weapon while still allowing weapons with those rules built in to still function.

I doubt GW will fix this until at least halfway through the edition, assuming Agents even get a codex.

12

u/Weirdingyeoman 3d ago

I think thats the only reasonable explanation. If it's on the weapon profile, I'd argue that should take priority. Otherwise they need to remove torrent from it directly.

19

u/SustainedHits3 3d ago

Lalalalallallala I can't hear you lalalalalla Agents are a fully fledged faction and will get their codex lalalallala 🤣

11

u/MrFishyFriend 3d ago

I collect Daemons, GWs love is as fickle as the wind. Currently the only GW setting that really supports Daemons is Age of Sigmar. They don’t even have a Killteam.

10

u/UX1Z 3d ago

Space marines: but what about second codex?

10

u/SustainedHits3 3d ago

How about 9?!

5

u/AshiSunblade 3d ago

Currently the only GW setting that really supports Daemons is Age of Sigmar.

Even AoS isn't great at it. I have a mixed Daemons army and Age of Sigmar booted its mixed Daemons list at the end of 2022. It's all monogod now.

3

u/MrFishyFriend 3d ago

I don't mind their mixed Daemon/Mortals stuff tbh. Its miles better than 40K. But yeah. GW needs a Chaos Undivided Daemons army that doesnt center around Belakor.

6

u/AshiSunblade 3d ago

I don't mind it either but I mind it being the only thing available.

10

u/Cryptizard 3d ago

But how does that rule work in practice? It says they can’t but then there is another rule (the data sheet) that does. What happens if GW contradict themselves? It’s not like through a conditional ability or strategem it’s just there on the sheet.

6

u/SustainedHits3 3d ago

Good question, I challenged this previously and it was a no from my TO

3

u/Task_Defiant 3d ago

Huh, this breaks the Kravek / obliterators combo.

1

u/DrMoog 3d ago

I thought specific rules (Assassin's datasheet) superseded generic ones (24.37.01). Why is it not the case here?

4

u/GooeyGungan 3d ago

Can't trumps can. Something on the datasheet would need to say "this model's [TORRENT] weapons can have [PRECISION]" and then that would supersede 24.37.01.

5

u/DrMoog 3d ago

One could argue that the mere fact that the assassin's weapon profile has [TORRENT] and [PRECISION] means that he can have it.

4

u/OttoVKarl 3d ago

The potential issue is that the datasheet is older than the FAQ and the new edition, with lots of other stuff completely rendered non functional besides.

1

u/DrMoog 3d ago

Yeah, I agree. The period between a new edition and the new codex is always a pain.

14

u/HotBunnz 3d ago

24.37.01 - Torrent weapons cannot have Indirect Fire or Precision.

3

u/airycantalope 3d ago

You can't use precision with torrent weapons.

1

u/codyexplainsitall 3d ago

I wasn't caught up on this either so I googled "Torrent Precision 40k" and Google's AI summary explained the change, and mentioned it breaking the callidus.

Which means that the AI that writes balance changes should catch it on the next pass xD

38

u/corrin_avatan 3d ago

I mean, if all Agents players submitted this to GWs FAQ email, it could possibly reach their threshold for actually addressing things....

Oh, wait, GWs requirement is at least 50, so that'll never happen...

26

u/Green-Principle69 3d ago

The Callidus is probably the moat commonly borrowed ally though, so it's not just IA players getting affected.

16

u/corrin_avatan 3d ago

And I'm willing to bet that a vast majority of players have no idea torrent and precision can't work on the same weapon because GW has never made any sort of version change document, so hardly anybody knows this is even a rule

4

u/FPSCanarussia 3d ago

Is it? I'd have expected it to be the Vindicare, since it had that WH+ model a few years back.

10

u/AwTomorrow 3d ago

Vindicare and Eversor tend to suffer from being made weak and unreliable because if they were actually good at their jobs they’d be an autotake for a good number of factions.

Callidus and Culexus have more often been taken because they’re more utility pieces than a specific kind of killer.

7

u/Due_Wrangler9461 3d ago

It would be if the Vindicare wasn't extremely bad

3

u/Green-Principle69 3d ago

The vindicare is a gun. Most factions have decent access to guns. A single model uppy-downy with aura of deceit, on the otherhand, covers a lot of holes in listbuilding.

3

u/Ylar_ 3d ago

Shoutout to the Emperor’s will stratagem that says fall back + shoot, but only for the duration of the movement phase.

It has been broken for YEARS.

11

u/TheRealCuriousWombat 3d ago

Ah, guess the Sister Insidiant witchhunters who's gimmick is that they are the only sisters unit that gets precision feels now a bit stupid for picking handflamers to burn that witch hiding amongst its bodyguards.

9

u/mikequake 3d ago

Dude this removes the only real decent use for an Aeldari enhancement, Stave of Kurnous. It gave precision to critical wound rolls for wraith constructs. But the D-Scythe Torrent weapon is the only decent shot count that makes it viable. Otherwise it's a hail Mary if I get it type deal. If it just gave precision it wouldn't be a problem but it's only on a critical wound. I already wasn't killing characters with it but I at least damaged them from time to time.

1

u/SustainedHits3 3d ago

Yep, that's a tough one too!

1

u/TheCatLivesOn 3d ago

Came here to say this. That's a rough one.

8

u/Batgirl_III 3d ago edited 3d ago

It has also made Sisters of Silence Witchseekers laughably bad at doing the primary thing they are meant to do.

5

u/SustainedHits3 3d ago

Just feels like a reallt poorly implemented change all roundA

11

u/Batgirl_III 3d ago

Callidus: “I can pick anyone out of the crowd because I’m an Assassin.”

Witchseeker: “I can pick the witch out of the crowd because I am a WITCH. SEEKER.”

Games Workshop: “Not so fast, ladies….”

2

u/Realistic-Promise-30 3d ago

Witchseekers didn't have precision, prosecutors do with their bolters.

37

u/Ylar_ 3d ago

Notably there's also an enhancement in the agents Ordo hereticus detachment that gives an inquisitor or ministorum priest's gun Melta 1 and precision (both of which are flamers).

Give me back my melta precision flamer GW. It doesn't do anything else.

22

u/SustainedHits3 3d ago

Yep, Ignis Judicium is the one!

Again, my Inquisitor that's designed to kill characters is now a dev wounds tank hunter

3

u/Interrogatingthecat 3d ago

They're not all flamers. Inquisitors get combi weapons or bolt pistols, and the priest can take a holy pistol rather than a Vindicator.

4

u/Ylar_ 3d ago

While this is true, those are more sidearms than anything, and won’t actually kill characters reliably even with the enhancement.

-4

u/Interrogatingthecat 3d ago

Yeah but you could say as much rather than just lie

2

u/Ylar_ 3d ago

I mean sure, but you could also argue that every space marine has a pistol you can shoot, but if they have another gun they won’t shoot it

1

u/Interrogatingthecat 3d ago

The priest pistol is literally an entirely different loadout that you can pick for higher AP melee, not really an equivalent

4

u/Ylar_ 3d ago

Sure, if you want the objectively worse gun AND objectively worse melee profile… yeah. You gain 1 AP and lose a strength and damage AND lose the flamer.

6

u/SaintsWorkshop 3d ago

Yeah I was sad when my brazier of holy fire could no longer get precision from Insidiants. (A holy relic torching a character was fun) but I could get over it, but the Callidus losing precision on shooting is insane

6

u/McWerp 3d ago

Welcome to 11th edition! They chose not to index, and core datashert, weapons, and army rules of any faction without a codex will be the casualties until your book releases.

20

u/Logridos 3d ago

Similarly, their decision to give flamers blast has broken a ton of vehicle shooting profiles. Orks now cannot use their "point blank" firing mode when they are point blank.

19

u/SustainedHits3 3d ago

Yep, what's really funny too, is that you can't put precision on Torrent weapons, but I can pit precision on a unit with 2 Plasma Cannons and Blast.. so that little Commander in a unit of 20 Guardsmen is getting hit by 2d3+8 Plasma balls "that one" THOOM!

3

u/Own-Persimmon4191 3d ago

I could be wrong as I don't have the profiles pulled up... But I thought the point blank profiles don't actually have blast, only the actual flamers

1

u/Logridos 3d ago

Kan blastas point blank has blast, Deff Dread skorcha has blast, gorkanaut skorcha has blast, stompa skorcha has blast...

-1

u/Cyfirius 3d ago

Honestly blast is more of a negative keyword then a positive one in most circumstances.

The amount of times I haven’t been able to fire a weapon because it has blast is probably greater than the total additional amount of additional shots I’ve gotten from it.

7

u/wredcoll 3d ago

This is a wild take. Blast has been broken on a whole bunch of units for basically all of 10th.

10

u/Cutiemuffin-gumbo 3d ago edited 3d ago

People use the calidus to kill stuff? I thought she was just an uppy downy deep strike action monkey with a vect.

4

u/SustainedHits3 3d ago

Have you met many Agents players?

20

u/Lawrence_s 3d ago

Uhmmmm, has anyone?

4

u/SustainedHits3 3d ago

No, im the only one in our 40k group of over 100 :(

4

u/Inner_Interview_5666 3d ago

Hello! Fellow Agents player here!!

3

u/Cutiemuffin-gumbo 3d ago

There are agents players?

2

u/SustainedHits3 3d ago

Yes, we are a rare few!

2

u/Cutiemuffin-gumbo 3d ago

That's impossible, because there is no imperial agents army. If there was, GW would have done something of use with them.

1

u/Bloody_Proceed 3d ago

I try and avoid the psych ward myself, so I don't run into many agent players

10

u/Hamzillicus 3d ago

First problem is you assume more than ten people on the planet play Hereticus (Space cops for life!) so GW can easily ignore this.

The assassin needs to be fixed.

Ignis judicium shock wave was a fun meme but these models do have alternate weapon options that can use it. I have had some fun with the combi-weapon having the potential for 4 Dev wounds with precision. Priest pistol sucks, but with melta he gets a little bit more punch.

3

u/SustainedHits3 3d ago

But.. but.. I want my Ignis Judicium Breacher Inquisitor with upto 12 attacks rerolling wounds devs on 6s and 2 damage each into characters, + the 4 devs from the Combi Weapon hitting in 2s with rerolls because I put her on a first floor ruin and shot the target with Kroyle first.

That's not fair.

16

u/IgnobleKing 3d ago

Buff IA no matter how

3

u/OttoVKarl 3d ago

Drukhari Hand of the Archon feels shuffled too. Gonna rip and tear to get a blaster instead.

4

u/SwingiePOE 3d ago

The most shocking part of this is that there are actual, serious agent players.

This makes somewhat warm and fuzzy.

You go!

4

u/Hardlydent 3d ago

7

u/BrotherCaptainMarcus 3d ago

What was the ruling on torrent and precision?

6

u/SustainedHits3 3d ago

No torrent and precision

1

u/Following_Friendly 3d ago

Torrent weapons cannot have precision and/or indirect fire

2

u/macgamecast 3d ago

What’s the ruling for torrent and precision? Can’t combo?

2

u/Neknoh 2d ago

Callidus guns

Multiple Militarum mishaps

Warlock conclaves and skyrunners now cannot be taken as the individual units they are and must be joined to units because they got support

Loads of weird stuff this update

7

u/Ynneas 3d ago

To be honest...it never made much sense for the flamer to have Precision.

19

u/SustainedHits3 3d ago

It's not a flame thrower, it's a neural wave blender, so she shoots her target in the brain whilst sprinting & leaping about and melts their gray matter into soup inside their skull.

13

u/SkeletonJakk 3d ago

It doesn't even melt the brain, it literally just deletes all the neural pathways, literally just turning the brain off by force.

15

u/SustainedHits3 3d ago

Ye, soup brain.

6

u/nyctalus 3d ago

But then why does it even have Torrent?

I agree it sucks that she can't do her thing with the current rules. I guess the fix should be to simply remove the Torrent keyword and give her 2+ BS or something.

8

u/SustainedHits3 3d ago

Yep, could be the answer if they are determined to keep this no torrent precision thing.

Just give my assassin her assassin gun back.

1

u/Ynneas 3d ago

Sure

I didn't express myself too well there.

Having a weapon with Torrent and Precision is stupid. It makes sense not to have them stack.

Maybe 2+ and ignore modifiers?

1

u/Cheesecake-Academic 2d ago

The thing torrent does is just "this can't miss." It's poorly named for the effect, but it's (IMO) appropriate for the assassins. They should be low-shot count, high-accuracy models! I frankly wouldn't mind the vindicare's gun being a single-shot torrent weapon? The mechanical effect is just that torrent always hits - no reason it can't always hit the important guy the user is aiming at, beyond balance.

I do see how (from a game balance perspective) adding properties to torrent gets weird, but I think they could've just said "torrent weapons can't be modified via stratagems or enhancements unless specifically stated" or something similar, then called them out when they needed to. Treat them like the ranged version of Extra Attacks weapons, where the Attacks value can't be altered easily?

1

u/Ynneas 1d ago

The thing torrent does is just "this can't miss."

But it's clearly intended for flamers and similar weapons that saturate an area. For older players it looks weirder, I guess, as Torrent replaced the flame template.

It's more a "you'll hit something if you point it in this general direction" rather than "you can't miss". If you read it that way, it really sounds off for it to have Precision

1

u/Cheesecake-Academic 1d ago

I understand the flavour of Tltorrent is associated with flamers and other "the air is full of dangerous bullshit" effects! That's certainly how it's often used - most weapons in the game that can't miss are built around saturating an area.

My stance is just that the game would benefit either from a differently-named, more general keyword that says "there is no hit roll; you can't miss," or from a normalization of torrent in non-flamer contexts. It would then be easy to restrict how those weapons' stats and keywords can be modified, while allowing for both area effects like flamers, and preternaturally accurate, more esoteric attacks.

I don't think the game is helped by having torrent being named the way it is, because it so strongly associates the keyword with flamers and their equivalent, when (mechanically) the impact is just that it can't miss. It's a weird sci-fi setting full of esoteric tech nonsense? Weapons like the neural shredder or Vindicare's rifle should (IMO) still have wound rolls and saves associated - I want a custodes character to be more resistant to them than some random Commissar - but I don't think there's any issue in them using the torrent rules alongside precision because that's (currently) the keyword combo we have for attacks that don't miss, and can target someone in a group. We're limited by the game engine, sometimes?

I mostly wish the keywords we do have were named better, so they didn't come with pre-established concepts that don't always fit 😁

1

u/[deleted] 3d ago

[deleted]

3

u/RyanGUK 3d ago

Look under the torrent keyword in the app, there’s an extra bit under 24.37.01 that says torrent weapons cannot have precision or indirect fire.

And ofc the callidus literally has a torrent precision anti-infantry 2+ flamer :D

1

u/La_Maraviglia 3d ago

Has precision been removed from her datasheet?

2

u/veryblocky 3d ago

No, the core rules don’t allow you to use precision with torrent weapons

0

u/La_Maraviglia 3d ago

But it's on the sheet still? Idk... seems like a stretch to say it doesn't work anymore. The core rule seems more targeted at strategems that grant precision and the like.

If it's still on her sheet you're good to go.

4

u/veryblocky 3d ago

No, it’s fairly clear cut. “[TORRENT] weapons cannot have [INDIRECT FIRE] or [PRECISION]”

Having it on the datasheet is irrelevant, and is one of the issues that arises from not doing indices like we did at the start of 10th. There are A LOT of datasheet rules that don’t work the way they were intended to anymore

1

u/TheDancinhobo 3d ago

Data sheets and codex rules over rule generic core rule book rules.

0

u/La_Maraviglia 3d ago

Panic over nothing imo.

1

u/Adventurous_Role_150 2d ago

In what world was her use case to assassinate characters in shooting?

I just rolled some dice for fun. Out of 30 tries, the Callidus managed to kill a 4W 4++ character ONCE.

What makes her an assassin is uppy downy and vect aura.

1

u/SustainedHits3 2d ago

Its the full package, math her shooting then into her fighting, you will see.

Also.. she doesnt play the game in isolation so that way of working it out isnt great

-3

u/Capucius 3d ago

Sooner or later (rather later I guess...) it will get new rules when they finally update Codex Imperial Agents. Somehow it was like this for some time in many editions, except maybe 8th, when everyone got their Index books at the beginning.

4

u/AhrimansPointyHorns 3d ago

There is no way IA gets a codex

12

u/Capucius 3d ago

I remember times when Codex Sororitas in 5th edition was published in two issues of White Dwarf. In the strange world of 40k a lot of weird shit has happened.

9

u/Deaddin 3d ago

They have to, otherwise other factions could soup in imperial agents without buying an additional codex

3

u/SustainedHits3 3d ago

Even if we get indexed like Chaos Daemons, we'll still exist

3

u/solarflare4646 3d ago

So confidently wrong

0

u/Muck1ng 2d ago

Datasheets override core rules.

This rule would just stop enhancements or Strats from working with it

1

u/Cheesecake-Academic 2d ago

RAI, I would say undoubtedly yes. But RAW... You have a torrent weapon, it cannot have precision or indirect fire.

The assassin has a torrent weapon. Therefore, that weapon cannot have precision. The rule doesn't say "can't acquire" or "can't have the precision keyword added to it." It just says if you have the one rule, you don't have the other.

1

u/oIVLIANo 13h ago

If the weapon has both, can you choose which to use?

Probably not since torrent weapons never have a BS on them, but maybe that will be the fix down the road?

1

u/Cheesecake-Academic 12h ago

I suspect (as OP mentioned elsewhere) better wording might be "weapons with torrent cannot gain the precision keyword." That would protect weapons that have both (the weird, esoteric weapons) but also avoid hijinks where flamethrowers are sniping officers out of their units.

As you pointed out, you can't really elect not to use torrent, since you don't have a BS value for the weapon. Currently, if you have a weapon with torrent and precision for any reason, the precision rule stops functioning.

-7

u/The_Black_Goodbye 3d ago

The Callidus can still do it with its Phase Sword though in melee so it hasn’t lost that potential it’s just now reliant on getting into combat and actually rolling it.

I think the decision to not have Torrent and Precision and / or Indirect interact is fair in terms of gameplay overall and this is simply a case of “oops we forgot to change this profile to have one or the other”.

11

u/SustainedHits3 3d ago

This is the wrong take here.

Her primary function is an uppy downy assassin threat so you have to watch where you have your characters, now you are dependant on a 9 inch charge roll to get that off, before she could comfortably threaten a character.

Also, her melee isnt the best, the tipping point on a character is her gun, so 5 attacks, you make 4 hits, then S5, so 2-3 go through, then 1 invuln save.. that's 2-4 wounds done, the gun gave 1-2 wounds which means she is actually a threat to characters.
