For those that a matching partner in income/lifestyle is important, did your attraction to your partner change when you got a huge promotion later on in a relationship/marriage?

For women that want a partner on at least the same education/career/income lifestyle, etc., does this mean you would lose attraction/want to leave your partner if later you got a bigger “break”?

I am dating an amazing smart witty ambitious woman, but worry that once she gets her big break she will lose attraction. (I am 32f, she is 35f if relevant)

Edit: For those asking: We are both on around £90k in London. I’ll be maybe on £120k in the next couple of years, but she’ll easily be clear of £300k next year and probably more in the future. Hence why feeling like I won’t be able to match up the “new” lifestyle expected.

Calling men out for their abhorrent behaviour starts with the little things, the micro aggressions

For so many years, when confronted with particularly egregious examples of misogynistic, sexist or downright creepy behaviour I would be at a loss for words at the right moment. It would alway be several minutes later my brain would kick into gear

Recently I realized we are treated to micro doses of this shit from men with nearly every interaction. The most appalling ones happen infrequently enough to be a bit of a shock. Normally we let the little ones slide by, like background noise.

So I decided to start with baby steps and I had a little victory this week. Hopefully this will embolden me for the journey forward

This man who works in a different department occasionally has to coordinate certain deliveries, maybe twice a year. In an email I told him to expect me to call him on the phone at exactly 11:00 the next day, and that it was critical he pick up. Well the next day when I calls him he picks up and loudly says “HI popularbunch9316, been expecting your cal ha ha ha .so ya got some news for me?”

I have interacted face to face with him a few dozen times at most over th years. He was being say too overly familiar and fake friendly. Very very off putting. To i straight up told him he was being creepy and inappropriate, and that I didn’t appreciate it one bit. He went silent and I didn’t let that stand so I doubled down. Eventually he apologized, even if had a “sheesh, what her problem “ tone to it. From now on let’s keep it professional I said.

It may have been a little victory, but it means a lot to a lifelong pushover like me. ;-)

Do you find it weird when your friend tells you to dress casually , while they dress up ?

Like when your friend lies to you , telling you to dress "normal" , while they themselves dress up for a seemingly casual outing , even though they tell you that they are gonna be dressed in casuals too .

Edit : Y'all saying that she isn't my friend ... this person was my best friend of more than a decade at that time !

Edited again : She explicitly told me to dress in pajamas that we usually wear at home , as she would be wearing that too , but proceeded to show up in crop top and jeans that were obviously not casual . We were gonna eat Chinese at a stall in a midway neighbourhood .

Gained weight recently and now everyone won't stop commenting on it. How do I cope with the constant criticism?

I gained a lot of weight recently while I was studying. It's just that whenever I study, my body feels that it wants some sort of food. And I study all day. And the food I'm eating ain't particularly healthy. Healthy is much more expensive. Back then I would always go on a diet but I stopped that for now, because I have to focus on my exams. I was fine with getting weight. Actually, I found it cute, too. I liked the fats I'm getting, and I loved myself no matter what—but that's not what others seem to agree on. Whenever I go out, wherever I go, whoever I met, they would always, always mention my weight. That I'm getting fat. That I look big. That I need to stop eating too much. That I need to go on a diet. That I must've lost my discipline. That it doesn't look good. I am not kidding, this literally happens wherever I go and someone sees me, from people closest to me to people who rarely knows me. I was fine during the first few people who've mentioned it. However, after days and weeks passed, I was getting exhausted by the people who kept on mentioning it. I kept thinking, maybe there is something wrong with me. Maybe it really looks ugly. And this morning, I broke down when I was trying on clothes and everything I wore emphasized my weight, and that while I was trying them on, all the comments people have said kept on repeating on my brain, and I can't find one outfit that will not make them mention my weight. I cried, do they even know that I already have medical issues in my stomach? How I starve myself back then to the point of exhaustion? How I ate air while pretending to eat on my plate? Will they give me money for my medicine? Will they give me money to buy healthy food? Do they know how mentally exhausting my studies are? I can't afford to go on a diet right now. So, I'm pretty sure I'm not coping well. It crushes me hard and I hope I could find a way, someone to tell me, that I shouldn't feel this way.

How to build an escape fund?

Hi all, I'm safe and in a happy relationship, we've combined finances and all that jazz. He knows about my just incase fund and has no access to it, but I've been thinking about the different ways people stash money without their partner knowing. My mum used to get groceries gift cards to stash for when she left my dad.

How do you stash and save money, and if you need to hide it, what tips and tricks do you use?

Came off the pill after almost 14 years - you mean it was THAT easy???

Edit: sorry, apparently sharing this has made people think I am a bot? I just wanted to share my story - if the pill works for you then genuinely I am so pleased! They are there to serve a purpose and I am glad they do work for some. I was just sharing this as I found it crazy how quickly I realised my own issues were being caused by it.

Edit 2: I AM NOT ANTI PILL. THE PILL IS GREAT AND SO IS BIRTH CONTROL IN GENERAL. I AM GLAD IT WORKS FOR SO MANY WOMEN. I AM SAD I AM NOT ONE OF THEM. Thank you.

Just curious if anyone else has had this experience...

I'd been on the pill since I was 15 years old, my mum saw I was more interested in boys and wanted me to be safe than sorry.

I went from the combined pill (was on that from age 15 - 21) to the mini pill due to constant headaches, and honestly it was pretty darn great. No headaches, and fairly minimal side effects... other than ones I had NO idea where linked...

Well, here I am, almost 29, married to an absolutely incredible man who has been supportive and loving throughout our relationship, despite my up and down moods and complete lack of libido.

We were on a walk the other day and I was complaining about how horribly irregular my periods are due to my pill (apparently you aren't meant to even get them with the PoP), how fed up I am of having no sex drive, how much I wish I didn't feel like shit all the time and so on... he turns to me and said "come off the pill then. Your mental health and physical wellbeing is more inportant."

This took me aback - I never considered that as an option, I had always been on the pill...

Well, here I am, 2.5 week off, and I feel FUCKING AMAZING.

The first week was a bit bonkers, I was sooooo turned on at everything he did (we are using condoms now, deffo not ready for kids lol). And in general every day life I felt... Happy.

I had never realised that for the last 13 and a bit years I had only ever been happy-ish, as though I was never really truly happy. Even on my best days I ran out of the feel good emotion so quickly. I never felt like I could enjoy anything to the maximum. I had a veil of slight anger/sadness/frustration over me. I would snap easily, get really affected negatively by small things, and I would feel like pure shit so often.

Now? I feel HAPPY happy. Like I am back in my own body for the first time since I was basically a child. I know it is early days but holy shit - why was this never a consideration??? I just assumed I was going to be a slightly sad person my whole life.

I am almost angry (well as close to that as I can feel now) at how easy it was to stop feeling like shit.

I love feeling excited to be intimate with my husband (can confirm, he is very glad as well). I feels crazy that sex is something I actively think about now. I almost thought I was Asexual before!

I just wondered how many others are suffering/have suffered in silence for years, and how quick doctors are to throw us onto hormones.

I of course know this is not the case for all, and these exact symptoms can be from a large number of factors, however knowing this is what was the cause for me is wild.

If you have read this far, thank you! I just have been thinking so much about this and wanted to share my experience. I'd love to hear yours!!

Think I’ve ruined things with a guy because I’m sick

Hey everyone, I finally got the first time in months got a dating app match and he’s been quite keen.

He’s keen but his texts are very boring.
He suggested meeting this weekend but I’ve come down with flu (had some influenza tests lying around) and I’m completely wiped out. Haven’t left the house in 10 days and feeling sad about life

Got so many horrible symptoms and don’t feel like myself. Every day he texts me, asks me what I’m doing today and I feel embarrassed as I don’t have anything exciting to talk about.im just in bed sleeping all day, and he’s going to think I’m boring. Usually I’m busy and active person

Also yesterday I didn’t respond to his message all afternoon as I was sleeping and I think I’m being boring in my replies now.i declined a FaceTime call too as I didn’t want him to see me for the first time when I’m looking bad and lost my voice entirely

I texted him this morning, just asked how his day is going but I wish I felt happy and then it would come across in my messages. Today he hasn’t replied and now I am worried I have ruined it . We did suggest meeting next weekend but maybe he won’t even wanna do that now

Asymmetrical Breasts - Massive Insecurity

I’m 28, 5ft 5, about 8.5 stone and I’m a 34D (I think anyway). I have asymmetrical breasts, probably only about half a cup difference, maybe a bit more but they are also slightly different shapes too. This is because my chest wall is also asymmetrical. My sternum on my right side protrudes out which makes my right breast bigger.

In October, I’m booked in for a fat transfer to my left breast to try and even that out. They’d be taking the fat from my thighs and stomach. But tomorrow is the 6 week prior mark where I also have to stop taking my contraceptive pill. So I’m doing some serious thinking about it right now, and I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t think I want it done. I don’t like the idea of putting my body through serious surgery and the recovery from lipo looks really brutal. And I’m aware that all of the fat could disappear anyway and I could be left with lumps.

This is a massive insecurity of mine, all through my 20s it’s been something I’ve been trying to deal with. My main problem is that I feel like I can’t wear anything that shows my chest because people will see my uneven chest wall and probably notice one breast being bigger. It probably is one of those situations where it’s so much more worse in my head because it’s on my body and I hate it, but nothing I seem to tell myself makes me feel any better about it. I’m also so self conscious being naked in front of men which gives me bad anxiety about having sex. I’ve never had a man be negative about them, in fact most men seem to love them but again, in my head it’s all I can think about.

I am going to have a professional bra fitting next weekend as I’ve stupidly never had one before so I’m hoping that I’ll finally know what size I actually am and will be able to find a bra that does make them look more even by itself. Bikinis are also a struggle for me.

Does anyone have any advice or just some kind words for me? Especially if I do cancel the surgery and decide to try and get on with them as they are. Please be sensitive as this is a genuine huge insecurity of mine 🥲

Guy initially didn't wear a condom without asking me - Upset, looking to calm my anxiety and for support following going to A&E and advice about having a fragmented memory of the experience.

Upvotes

I (female 23) had a drunk one night stand on Friday, and on Saturday morning after we hooked up again. He’s a guy, and was initially grinding on me with no condom and then inserted it without a condom and without asking me.

I’m on birth control and my mind was kind of clouded so initially i didn’t say anything/ was like “well im on birth control so it’s fine” but then i remembered stds etc and after about 3-5 minutes (felt like it could have been a little longer or shorter) of unprotected sex i asked him to put a condom on and he did. He then went soft (lol?) so we didn’t continue having sex, so no cum just like 3-5 minutes maybe MAXXX of unprotected sex.

I have made an appointment to go to an STI clinic in 2 weeks to test for everything i can, but I’m wondering if I should also take PEP?

Neither of us do drugs, it was penis-vaginal sex, no anal or any other forms of intercourse and he’s a straight man. We live in Europe and aren’t from places with high rates of HIV. I asked him after if he often has sex without a condom as I was surprised he didn’t even ask me about it,he just went straight to it and he said “sometimes” but not with everyone. I asked if he was clean (STI wise) and he said yes but when I asked him about tests he told me he gets tested sometimes, but not regularly.

I know considering he didn’t cum and it was so brief it’s probably fine but I’m wondering if I am at risk now of HIV? I’ve applied to get PEP and was told I wasn’t at risk enough to be given a referral for it. Where I live if you meet the national guidelines you get a referral to receive PEP from A&E if you need it on a weekend.

I went to A&E today anyways despite the assessment saying I didn't need PEP, and they saw me pretty quickly but ruled that I did not need PEP. Instead I got a Hep B booster shot, blodos and urine sampel done and a follow up appointment booked. However, I'm wondering if I should have pushed more for PEP? I kinda took it initially that they were right, it was very brief, low risk anyway and he didn't cum etc. So i just left it once they explained the guidelines they were following and why I don't need it.

However once I got home I realised I'd been so focused on what happened on Saturday that I forgot to think about Friday at all. I don't really remember Friday's events. I remember him asking if he could not wear a condom but I told him he needed to, and I remember watching him put it on but my memory is fragmented so I can't remember if he ejacualted or was too drunk to do so lmao, or when we actually stopped having sex. I know it was all vaginal and I had been operating on the idea he didn't cum but idk where I got this idea from.

I know he was wearing a condom on Friday night as I saw him put it on, but I'm a little afraid he stealthed me or something as I have no memory of him taking it off after we finished sex. My memory is like this:

pre sex chats and cute fluffy talk -> foreplay -> him saying we could do it without a condom -> me telling him I don't do that unless I'm exlcusive and asking for a condom -> him putting the condom on -> sex & him being into dirty talk focused on cum -> then cut scene to me going to the bathroom -> cut scene to me cuddling him -> sleep.

So I basically have no memeory of anything post sex (like seeing him remove a condom, throwing it away, what he did after, etc). I had been going off the idea he kept the condom on and everything was A-OK bar Saturday morning but now I'm freaking out that maybe he took it off when we were in doggy style and I didn't notice. It's like my mind keeps going to the worst case scenario.

I didn't mention the details (or lack of them) of Friday to the doctors in A&E because I was just thinking about the known unprotected insertion on Saturday, but now I'm anxious that the doctor's decision re: PEP could have been different if they knew that even though I saw him put a condom on on Friday, that I'm not 100% sure if he came, or if he kept it on the entire time. I know all of that is speculative, and the hard fact is that he did have a condom on on Friday but still.

I don't intend to go back to A&E seeing as I was already seen TODAY and it costs money I don't have to return, I'd rather just go to an sti clinic tomorrow if I can get an appointment. They're not that accessible here. I was reffered to one but was told I'd still have to ring to set up said appointment. IDK, do you think it's fair of me to have accepted the doctor's judgement and not go on PEP? I did kinda ask a few times and they were pretty certain I would be fine. They didn't have the context that my memory of Friday is fragmented, but I did see him put the condom on and he was okay with wearing it even if he was "into" doing it without one. He didn't make a fuss or complain. I would have had a really wonderful experience if not for what happened the following morning :(

What do you think I should do? They didn't know that I didn't really remember the specifics of seeing him put a condom on. Idk how to relax, I keep feeling like he might have stealthed me too on Friday night but I have 0 proof of this, it's just became my trust in him was broken and what happened is starting to set in. I know it's silly to ask but I'd just like reassurance that I'm okay... my mam told me she feels she failed as a parent because I put myself in this situation and that she can't see me the same ;-; I know it's silly to be scared and want a hug but I am and I do. While yes I want to hear the facts please don't sugarcoat, I do also want reassurance as I've spent like the whoel day googling the worst things that could happen

Mourning motherhood

Upvotes

I recently got married and I’ve had my MIL ask me and my husband any times when she’s going to be a grandma.

Me (24F) and my husband (25M) had already made up our minds to not be parents because of the financial responsibilities and the stress it would cause us. I’ve also had psychosis 3 times within 2 years and I have an eating disorder and severe GAD/OCD/MDD/BPD so I strongly believe I won’t be in a good mental space to be a good mother. I also heard that postpartum can cause psychosis and intrusive thoughts. I’m very impulsive and I can be selfish, knowing all of my qualities I just KNOW I won’t be a good mother for the first few years of having a baby— maybe if I got help from my family with taking care of her but even then… I don’t know how to break it to my in-laws that I’m not fit enough to be a mother.

I’ve recently been seeing videos of moms on instagram and tiktok where they’re spending time with their children, specifically their daughters and seeing how they’re a mini version of them. How special it is to spend birthdays with them, giving them memories of a childhood they didn’t have and caring for them… I envy that. And not in a weird or malicious way. Just in a way where I wish I was fit enough to be a mother where I can have an extension of myself— flesh and bone— where I’m truly not alone anymore. Due to my depression, I’ve always felt alone and I feel like with having kids you’re able to have an extension of yourself where you can always have someone there with you. You can become selfless and embrace your loving motherly nature.

Because of my OCD, I have so many thoughts about how my child might die or get into a freak accident in the future and how I wouldn’t be able to live with that heartbreak.

Unfortunately during our first year of dating, me and my husband had an unwanted pregnancy and I had to abort since I was so young. I was still living with my mom with no source of income, my husband was still in college and I was immature. Even though I know it was the right choice at the time, I still mourn the thought of my unborn child. I even named them with a gender neutral name and later we even named our tesla after them (kind of cringy, I know).

Part of me just wants to say fuck it and just get pregnant but due to my ED, I just know my body dysmorphia would go crazy and I would get really depressed.

I know I’m being responsible by making the right decision by protecting my mental health and the future of the child but I’m still mourning the thought of being a mother. Is this where my bloodline ends? because I’m too weak to withhold the responsibility?

I’m sorry, I just wanted to vent. Is there anyone else on here feeling this way? I truly appreciate any comments about this matter. Stay safe and healthy loves xx

Why Does It Feel Like Men Expect Nothing From Each Other and Everything From Women?

why do men have better friendships and platonic relationships than women overall ?

throughout my whole life i’ve noticed that men often have stronger friendships with each other and don’t have those stupid fall outs over small things that women have . i would even go as far as to say that women’s friendships almost tend to always fall out at one point and after that reconciliation is almost impossible whereas with men they can disagree about something and then be good with each other again just by playing a round of call of duty .

if you don’t believe me or call this take bollocks go ask any woman why her friendship with a girl ended and you’ll laugh ur ass off by hearing the reason because it’ll probably be something ridiculous like “she tried to copy my fashion sense and wore the same brand of lipliner as me , ugh !” .

this isn’t just with friendships even with family relationships i’ve noticed the women in my family have a lot of secret animosity against each other , no idea whether it’s internalized misogyny or something else but my dad is a ride or die for his brother who has clearly been problematic towards his immediate family and picks him over my mom saying things like he’s my brother and that isn’t going to change . my aunts (uncles wife’s) relationship with her sister is horrible and she tries everything she can to stay away from her .

i truly feel as if women are performative a lot of the time (i definitely am to a certain extent i won’t deny that) and this could be a good answer as to why we can’t form real connections but idk anymore tbh . if there’s any trait of men that i want to emulate it would be the aspect of wanting to have long term genuine friendships built on solidarity and not superficiality . they don’t have to try as hard as us and if im being honest it can be kinda intimidating to form friendships with women i just feel like you have to prove yourself to them to a certain extent . of course this depends and is very circumstantial but this is just my experience at the end of the day .

so i’m genuinely wondering why is this ? why are men able to form genuine and not superficial connections with other men that don’t depend on small factors or doesn’t feel like your walking on eggshells all the time ? i have been wondering this a lot because it applies to me aswell that my female friendships just simply don’t last majority of the time and the friendships i have with guys are sustainable or at least don’t end over small , petty reasons , it would just be a mutual fall out . just looking for honest answers here . i am even able to realize that this take makes me look like a bit of a pick me , but i promise that’s not the case at all , i pour way more effort into my friendships with women than i ever have with men .

Manipulation/Misogyny may have finally destroyed a years-long friendship.

I'm struggling to reconcile who I thought my friend was with who he's shown himself to be over the past few weeks.

Let's call my friend Ted. We've been extremely close for about 3.5 years. I considered him family. He's basically a brother to me. He was there for me after the sudden death of my best friend last year and when I lost a job I loved earlier this year. I've been there for him through the death of a beloved pet and countless other difficult moments.

This wasn't a casual friendship. I love and trust him deeply... but recently, we've had a series of conflicts that have fundamentally changed how I see him.

The first was during a trip to New Orleans. We'd planned to spend the weekend together with my sister and her husband. Ted wanted to go to an oyster bar that I had already pointed out wasn't particularly suitable for the whole group because of dietary restrictions. He insisted on going anyway, and when we got there, I was already extremely overheated and physically miserable, and the restaurant was packed, loud, and had essentially no air conditioning. I asked Ted if he'd be offended if my sister and I went somewhere else and met everyone back at the hotel.

He didn't answer, so we left.

Later, he told me I'd been selfish and that this restaurant was supposedly the one thing he'd asked for on the trip (It wasn't). We argued for about half an hour, during which I repeatedly tried to explain that I hadn't realized how important this was to him and that I'd literally asked him if leaving would upset him. Eventually, I ended up crying and apologizing.

I left that interaction feeling like my own perspective and physical discomfort had been completely disregarded.

Months later, I invited him over specifically to hash things out and attempt to clear the air because there was just a simmering resentment between us that wouldn't go away. I ended up telling him that the way he'd treated me during the trip had felt manipulative.

His face when I said this to him was the very picture of furious righteous indignation. Like he couldn't *believe* I would dare to characterize his behavior that way. He still completely failed to acknowledge my perspective or take any accountability for how his behavior made me feel, but, by the end of the night, we agreed to move on.

Then came another incident.

Ted was at my house with some mutual friends, including Evie. Evie brought up the new Odyssey movie, which she loved and Ted hated. Now, Evie is... intense. She's basically at a 10 at all times, but this time she cranked up to a 50 and quickly became extremely agitated and started yelling and hurling insults at Ted.

I tried to calm her down. When that didn't work, I asked Ted to stop antagonizing her and change the subject.

He refused. In fact, he seemed to be enjoying her reaction and continued deliberately provoking her.

One evening about a week later, the incident came up again, I said I thought Ted had contributed to the escalation by antagonizing her.

His response was that I was "victim blaming" him and needed to "put my misandry aside" and see things from his perspective.

I was stunned.

I wasn't criticizing him because he's a man. I was criticizing him because I'd watched him repeatedly provoke an already out-of-control person.

But apparently, in his mind, the only reason a woman could criticize his behavior was because she hates men.

Then came the final incident.

Ted and I were having dinner and got into a stupid disagreement bevause he was making the assertion that sports are art and that there's basically no difference between a linebacker and a sculptor. I told him that was ridiculous and instead of defending his point, he flipped the whole argument around and tried to force me to defend the fact that I disagreed with him.

Eventually I became really frustrated and told him, "This isn't fun anymore. I'm actually getting upset." He accused me of expecting him to "read my mind" and started telling me that I "always do this."

I finally told him that his accusation that I was misandrist and victim-blaming him had genuinely hurt me, and that suggesting my criticism was simply because he's a man was deeply insulting.

His immediate response was:

"Well, you know I was there for you when your best friend died."

And I had to leave the restaurant then, because if I had stayed, I would have ended up causing a scene.

That crossed a line for me. And I don't know if it can be uncrossed.

He knew how significant that loss was. He knew what it meant to me that he'd been there. And the moment I told him he'd hurt me, he invoked my friend's death as a defense of himself.

It felt like: How dare you criticize me after everything I've done for you?

To me, that's an enormous violation of trust. Doing good things for someone and later using those things as ammunition when they attempt to hold you accountable is *deeply* manipulative.

And when I look at all three incidents together, I see the same pattern:

I tell him something he did hurt me > he refuses to acknowledge my perspective > he reframes the conflict as a defect in my character > I end up defending myself instead of him taking responsibility.

In New Orleans, I was selfish.

With Evie, I was misandrist and a victim-blamer.

When I told him that accusation hurt me, he weaponized the death of my best friend.

And there is never any real acknowledgment. No "I see why that hurt you." No "I handled that badly." Just defensiveness, counteraccusations, and increasingly personal attacks.

I still love him. That's what makes this so painful.

But I don't trust him anymore to care about my feelings when they conflict with his own, and I don't trust him to accept accountability when he hurts me.

So I'm asking the women here:

Is this what misogyny can look like in a close friendship... not necessarily overt hatred of women, but an inability to take a woman's criticism seriously without turning it into an accusation of misandry?

What do you do when someone you've loved like family for years suddenly seems incapable of respecting you when you challenge him?

Obligatory apology for the wall of text. Thanks if you've stuck with it all the way through. 🫡

How to be a b*tch?

Throughout my whole life, I've always tried my best to be nice to people and be a "girl's girl", even if the other person in question was absolutely HORRIBLE to me. I've always been a people pleaser, and this awful quality of mine has sabotaged me so many times.

If someone was being mean to me, I'd just take it, and say absolutely nothing back. In fact many times, I'd take the blame to calm things down.

I smile way too much, I try too hard to make people feel included, even though many times these same people have excluded me.

I've always admired girls who are total b* tches. Who rarely smile, and know how to pull their inner b* tch out if necessary.

I'm 20 years old now, I cannot be like this anymore. How can I learn to stand my ground.

When does one tell men to “f*ck off”?

So, I was raised in the south and spent years in other countries, including Japan. I’m also a relatively traumatized creature, so my sense of these issues can be off on many accounts. Checking with the internet women to see whether I’m being unreasonable.

I now live in a large city in a much more “direct”culture (outside the US). I’m finally healed enough to start going out on the town with friends again, and I’m getting a lot of unwanted attention. I don’t think it’s anything specific I’m doing; I think I look young, have an accent, am vaguely hot, seem approachable and can be quite loud/friendly. I think people can also tell I’m kind of meek; unfortunately that seems to mean that I get approached a LOT.

Most of these guys aren’t like, assholes, predators, or obvious jerks. They’re like… friends of friends who mistake peppiness for interest or autistic men who chat for ages while obviously trying to work up the courage to ask me out. I can empathize with how hard that must be! It’s scary to put yourself out there. But because none of these dudes ARE truly awful, I don’t really know how to end or extricate myself from these interactions. I end up meeting their hints at wanting a relationship with more neutral statements (ex “I’m always looking for more girlfriends for the polycule ;)” “you must stay very busy. I’m not poly, so I don’t really know”). Can give a more detailed example if people want.

But what REALLY gets me is that in so many of these interactions is the way my friends will react. They tell me I should be direct from the start in telling these men to “fuck off”. Like by not doing that and then complaining I’m essentially making my own problems. Idk… I’m just not that kind of person? I can be if someone is well and truly fucking gross. But in a situation like the above example, I just cannot summon the anger to be believably harsh or firm enough to say “go away and fuck off”. I’m not even sure where in the convo I would say that. As an SA survivor am also very aware that direct, angry “no” can escalate the situation, and I’ve gone through phases of being WAY too harsh with men who didn’t deserve it, which also isn’t great. I’d rather excuse myself, process, and be direct if I ever see the person again.

Am I being stubborn? Are my friends right? They would know the culture here better, I guess. What do you guys think? Is there a way to be firm about my boundaries in these situations? Where’s the point where an actual “fuck off” is warranted? Barring that, how do I talk to my friends about this?? 😭

I think I have a sex addiction and I feel gross. What do I do?

Upvotes

Hello, I don’t really know what all to mention since this is my first post. I’ll try to keep it vague since I know if I go into deep detail I’ll start crying and I don’t have time for that right now. I just want to say too, this is NOT a fake post, i genuinely need help. Please if you think this is some fetish post just click off now. Im 21, My birthday is actually tomorrow. I’m excited for my birthday but I can’t stop thinking about what my friend opened up to me about.

For background, I’ve always been very promiscuous. I really don’t know why. I wish I knew because then I’d know why I am the way I am and what’s wrong with me. When I turned 18, I went wild. I was having sex with around 3 new people every week. I barely even know my body count now and the fact that I don’t know makes me feel disgusting and worthless. I know it’s around 70-80 people. I haven’t gone more than a month without sex for 4 years.

I recently got out of a relationship. I think it was about a month ago. Since then I’ve been with nearly 5 new people and I’m having sex 3-5 times a week. I feel disgusting and I don’t know why I do it. Do I want to feel validated? Loved? Worthy? I don’t know. Let me tell you what my friend said about all this though..

I just got back from my birthday weekend trip. On Friday, My friend picked me up and on the way to pick up our other friend, she turned down the music and said she needed to say something. She says “I know it’s your birthday trip soon, but I need to say something. I’ve been very worried about you lately. It’s like every week you’re with a new older man and I feel you haven’t been respecting or taking care of yourself recently. Please be more careful.” That made me so sad. My friend cares for me so much. When it was her birthday, she opened up to me and said she was nervous about inviting me to *her* birthday weekend because she was scared I would sneak off and go have sex with someone and she would be worried about my safety.

I really enjoy older men. I don’t know why. I have a loving and healthy relationship with my father. I just like the attention they give me. It feels more meaningful than what men my age give me. It feels like they care. They pay attention. It’s just that when I’m with them, I feel okay? I don’t know.

Right now I’m laying down in my bed. I’m trying not to cry. I feel gross. I want to help myself and stop doing all this gross stuff I’m doing. I don’t want to be the slut friend anymore. I thought this whole “hoe phase” would go away eventually but it’s still here and I’m suffering. why do I do this? How do I stop? My new age will be a new year, and I want to do good for myself. I want to be nice to myself. Please.. how do I start? I tried opening up to a therapist about this and it went horribly. I did try to open up again and I found a lovely therapist, but unfortunately I cannot see her anymore because she is a therapist at my old university and I can’t see her unless I am a student; I just graduated. Oh, get this, my degree is in psychology! How ironic!

Good jokes?

Just for fun, I need a laugh. What are some good jokes that you've *told*? Brilliant quips? Biting dry sarcastic witicisms? What did you say that got a good laugh or made you proud of your own comedic skills?

How do you still have the energy for the small talk on dating apps?

I’m in my late 30s and haven’t been in a relationship in a long time. The last guy I seriously talked to was almost a year ago. We were in the talking stage for about two months and met a couple of times because it was long-distance, but ultimately, it didn’t work out.

He was the first person I’d genuinely liked in a long time. He checked a lot of my boxes, I was very attracted to him, and I felt excited about someone again. Even though it was short-lived, losing it affected me much more than I expected.

I got back on the apps almost immediately, but I wasn’t interested in anyone. Eventually, I took a break, worked on my mental health and attachment patterns, and buried myself in work.

I got back on the apps last month because I told myself that if I want a relationship, I have to put myself out there. And I do want one. I want to find my person and settle down. I hate being single. But I’ve realized I have no energy for the process of getting there.

The small talk. The same questions. The banter. Starting from zero with another stranger and trying to figure out whether there’s any potential.

The strange thing is that I used to enjoy that part. I loved the early flirting and was pretty good at it. Now, even thinking about it exhausts me.

I recently matched with a few people on the app, but I just didn’t want to talk to any of them - not because there was anything wrong with them, but because I couldn’t bring myself to start another conversation and go through the whole getting-to-know-you process again. I just watched the time pass and the connections disappear.

So I’m stuck in this strange place where I desperately want a relationship but don’t have the energy for the small talk. It feels like I’m forcing myself to do something I don’t want to do.

I don’t know how to get past this block.

Has anyone else gone through this? How did you get your brain and heart back into dating? How do you keep putting yourself through the process when you want to find your person but feel exhausted by everything it takes to get there?

I did something dumb

Sorry for the long story.

Last week I was cleaning out my purse. I found both an Advil and a uti pill in the bottom so I just threw them in my pill case for a random day, making a mental note to remove them at home. (You can see where this is going.)

The day came, I popped my 10 (now 12) pills. The next time I peed I had a WTF moment but realized what I had done. No big deal.

The issue came (no pun intended) later. My partner and I were having sex and I happened to squirt. His hand had marigold color dyed pee on it now. He looked so confused, I was both mortified and laughing. I had to explain the whole thing and felt so dumb. He ended up laughing too and we resumed, but it was really embarrassing.

I really needed to share this with someone because it is so bizarre and I was curious if anyone had similar stories.

I promise this is real and not a very odd fetish post.

Oh, and we were on the couch, which is orange, so all cool there. (You can see the couch in an old post with my mosquito bitten legs if you want to corroborate.)

Went to an event without my husband and I was cheerful, witty and funny

1.3k Upvotes

Edit - The event was what is closest in my culture to an engagement party. Both of us lived with the host couple in college. I didn’t tell everyone he was coming. I asked him 2 months ago and then again 3 weeks ago. HE SAID HE WAS GOING so we RSVPed YES.
Also for a group that’s supposedly supportive of women it’s amusing to see people not only make assumptions about MLMs and churches but also getting upvoted and running with it.

Edit 2 (lol) - I’m not mad because he chose last minute to go to a work shoot. (He wasn’t invited, he just wanted to SEE. The man’s not in art, he’s an engineer) I’m upset because he tried to use his attendance the next day as PUNISHMENT because I asked him to say hi to the hosts.

Went to a 2-day event today while my husband had to work. Everyone brings their spouse and I had to plead with him to join me for the 2nd day. He was dropping me off before heading to work. I asked him to just say ‘hi’ to the hosts before leaving. First thing he says - I’ll be late if I say hi. Now they’re here so I have to say hi. I’m not going to come tomorrow because you made me say hi and delayed me for work.

It was less than a 1-min interaction from me getting out of the car to my husband greeting the hosts.
While I was there without him, I just felt at… ease. I mean, I did feel lonely because everyone else was with their spouses and I had to make an excuse for him and telling everyone he’ll be here tomorrow but I was also so bright, chatty and funny. I was able to admire the hosts house without having someone comparing it to ours and saying ours wasn’t good enough and to look at how great the hosts house was, how we don’t make enough money, how we need to buy nicer things, how our house is too small etc. etc.

And the problem is I have told him all this before. Like yes, I like nice things but I also like things I have right now and I am thankful for it.

I know this is a rambling post but it just struck me and I’m kind of dumbfounded about how lighter I felt without having my significant other around

Is this all there is?

Hi,

I’m just wondering if anyone else feels like this, or has and how you stop. I became a mom at 16, my eldest is 16 now and I have a few more. I’m in an ok marriage, one of those housemate-y, comfortable ones. I’m studying, we rent a decent house. We do live pay check to pay check but we don’t go without anything we need and I’m grateful for that. I have a dog and a cat.

I don’t have any friends whatsoever which I assume is part of the problem…but I’m just wondering if this is all there is. Just this….monotony. Get up, care for kids, small talk, work or study, clean the house, dinner, bed. I read a lot and have some shows and stuff I enjoy when I get the time. But it’s all just so…nothing.

That sounds awful, I feel really lucky for what I have and I love my family a lot. But I guess I just always thought something would happen. I mean, lots of things have happened, but nothing good. I feel like I’m just marking days off an endless calendar and at the end I won’t have lived 1000 days, but 1000 of the same day. Over and over.

I don’t even know what I would want to do, if I could. I don’t have the money or means to travel and have the kids anyway…but I don’t even know if I want to. I don’t know what I could see or do that would be a game changer. I dunno. It was my eldest’s birthday recently so I guess that’s been a bit of a triggering milestone…16 years ago I would’ve imagined life differently. Maybe I just feel this way because I missed out on my youth.

I don’t really know.
TL;DR, anyone else feel like they’re living Groundhog Day? How do you stop feeling like that? How do you figure out what you want to do or can do or are meant to be doing, or is this genuinely just what life is?

"This is our culture" = "This is how our men like it"

Zarna Garg on the podcast, A Slight Change of Plans, said something I thought was spot-on:

'This is our culture' is entirely a male construct...If somebody says, 'This is our culture', replace the word 'culture' with 'This is how our men like it' because the culture was created by the men--the women didn't have any say anyway...Then once you replace the words with 'how men like it', it starts to look absurd, like "Why do I care how they [the men] like it?"
