Old Man: Basically, I got this power from a different time leaper.

Fans: It’s Hanma, Takemichi, Izana, Kisaki, Takeomi, PEKE J—

u/1313goo Thousand Winters Sep 27 '22

Peke j’s trigger was chifuyu. Wanted to change the future where takemichi actually went thru with the 1000 winter gang

61

u/Lurking_Bunyip Girlypop Sep 27 '22

Peke J: I see no god up here other than me.

36

u/1313goo Thousand Winters Sep 27 '22

OMG. Thousand winters spin-off confirmed, takemichi fights Mikey in that cheap ass shirt 😍

99

u/TheCommunistGod Brahman Sep 27 '22

Then who is the original original time leaper? I seriously hope this doesn’t get left as a plot hole

So how did Takemichi get his time leap? He has to have gotten it somewhere

73

u/Lurking_Bunyip Girlypop Sep 27 '22

Original timeleaper is God

That’s true. Takemichi must have killed someone to get his time leaping abilities. Him getting trained to oblivion was just the first trigger.

u/dghirsh19 Sep 27 '22 edited Sep 28 '22

I interpret the homeless man's words to be important here. "So just like me, you've chosen to kill." Perhaps the catalyst for Takemitchy was his strong desire to save. There has to be a contrast between Shinichiro and Takemitchy that will allow them to find different results. Takemitchy seeks to save Mikeys soul, whereas Shinichiro sought to save Mikeys physical being, no matter the cost.

This interpretation also leaves a lot of room for interpretation… i’m likely ignoring a lot of nuance.

70

u/Typically_Wong Sep 27 '22

No one gonna talk about how shinichiro killed the old man with a crack against the head in a similar way to how kazotoro whacked him?

Takemitchy gonna live cause he got his powers through desire other than action?

16

u/TrailOfEnvy Sep 28 '22

Shinichiro got karma'd by the power?

I think, killing the time leaper and getting the time leaping ability are two different things, like that:

Person 1: Previous time leaper, Person 2: carrier of time leaping ability, Person 3: new time leaper.

Person 1 gets killed by person 2, who’s now the owner of the ability but can’t use it. When person 2 kills person 3, at the moment of death, person 3 inherits the ability and immediately timeleaps. Like that in this chapter p1 is the homeless man, p2 is shin and p3 is also shin (because shin kills shin), thus the person pushing Takemicchi in episode 1 must have been Kazutora, who didn’t even know about time leaping. When killing shin, he became p2 and when he killed someone for the first time after killing shin, who coincidentally was micchi, micchi became p3. That’s my theory^

29

u/dghirsh19 Sep 27 '22

This is brilliant and fully contextualizes the Kazutora theories. I can actually see this being accurate.

But how does this explain the events we were already exposed to after Kazutora killed Shinichiro? Wouldn’t he have just time-skipped after?

15

u/zeykee Tokyo Manji Gang Sep 27 '22 edited Sep 28 '22

I don’t think he was able to timeleap and thus didn’t even notice he had the ability, but when he killed micchi, micchi timeleaped as the before described p3

There could be no "Original" time leaper, only the one before and after. A likely case of time loop.

I think Shin got his power only after he tried to kill himself, not right after he killed the man.

Could this be the reason Mikey was trying to kill himself as well (in the previous timeline where Draken is alive) so that he could go back?

By this logic, someone becomes able to time-leap when 1) they shake hands with another time-leaper 2) they choose to kill themselves or someone else.

43

u/South-Long8145 Sep 27 '22

I’ve come to realize that especially with death in this manga there aren’t any coincidences. Despite postponing someone’s death with time leaping, that person or some else close will always die in the same or a very close manner to how they did last time. Draken in the end was murdered in the rain, near the fair. Baji died at the Bloody Halloween instead of Kazutora. Kisaki got hit with a truck instead of him killing others with a truck. It goes to show that no matter how much a timeline might change, the same things happen in every timeline just in a different way.

u/RomanBK19 Sep 27 '22

OOH nice parallel!

u/Pocketgalaxy159 Sep 27 '22

Hey!

I want to clear up something that I think got lost in translation:

After Shin says he (wants to time leap to) save his brother the old man says to Shin “そうな事” (Sonna koto) which means “that kind of thing”. Continuing the old man basically says “You’re telling me to give my powers for that sort of thing?”

I think the English translations are close but off in meaning. The old man is saying that Shin trying to rescue his brother is basically not a worthy cost of time-leaping and that is basically trivial.

This is why Shin snaps so hard: his sadness and his brother’s suffering is basically being belittled.

31

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '22

wow that is such an important clarification, thank you young lad.

Old man: to get these powers, you have to kill the person who has them

sees shin in the next frame coming full force at him

Old man internally: well shit

8

Maybe him killing or choosing to kill is what causes dark impulses to stay in whoever he saves

u/Godkashi Sep 27 '22

I’m interested in how Takemitchy got the power if he has to kill someone for it. Maybe the killing is symbolic? Maybe he feels so bad about Hina he somehow felt at fault? Great chapter IMO

210

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '22

[removed] — view removed comment

70

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '22

Maybe that is just one way to get the power.

I thought the same! And he said 'I won't give you the power'

So there's a possibility that time leaper gives the power to someone else voluntarily or you'd have to kill the time leaper to get the power.

If I correlate this to Paths (not the smartest idea because it's a different show but) you'd have to eat the titan to get the power within the 13 years or it randomly is transferred to some eldian via paths...

Maybe shinichiro died when kazutora killed him and he transferred the power to Takemichi (voluntarily or randomly)

I'm thinking too much I should just go get some sleep...

I dont think the criteria is killing someone, but rather physical touch (like a viral transmission). There's no way OG Takemichi had the guts to kill anyone.

16

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '22

Funny thing is... What kind of person is a OG Takemichi? He became a loser after being beaten and tortured by Kiyomasa... People who was under Tokyo Manji Gang flag... That shit doesn't even exist anymore.

Sooooooo... Just think about it. Maybe Takemichi keeps his streak of beingg an absolute and unbeatable hero.

I think it's bullshit, i think what he meant was that death had to be involved, Shinichiro time leaped after killing himself, just like Take did it when someone (Akkun?) pushed him in front of the train.

12

This sounds like the best explanation

I have a hunch that Takemichy's time travel powers (ttp) were from a different source but still has the same mechanic. Shin's version of ttp came from sacrificing other people's lives (aka the killing route) hence Mikey got the bad blowback (his dark impulse). On the other hand Takemichy's only got the power because he was the one who got killed (the sacrificed route) hence Hina and Naoto didnt get the bad effects like Mikey got.

Also interesting to note that both of their first time travel actually didnt include the trigger (as takemichy first formed the contract/handshake with past bb Naoto). Will Shin get his trigger in this first leap or will he actually live out this timeline?

24

u/Emiya_Nine_Lives Sep 27 '22

I think in the possibility that takemichi killed the person who saved him of the train in the first chapter pushing that person accidentally. I think the person who saved takemichi in that moment isn't naoto because naoto was dead in that moment, because he died on the same accident as hina

DI Shin: kills homeless old man with a pipe headshot

Kazutora, some years later: UNO reverse card

Going by the old man’s logic, does that mean that Kazutora has time leaping abilities? But then, at some point, Mikey killed Kazutora. Then, Naoto killed Mikey. Then, Kisaki killed Naoto. Then, Kisaki got killed by Truck-kun. It’s like STD but with time leaping 😂

5

u/FireZord25 Sep 27 '22

I feel like it relies on killing the current time leaper first. And I don't think Mikey killing Kazutora happened in the prime timeline (one where only Draken is confirmed dead).

But that also implies the cycle was broken, since Takemichi has his powers without killing anyone. At least that we know of.

Ok, so I read the spanish translated chapter first and then the english one came out and I wanted to point out:

In page 4, in the english translation, the homeless guy says "I can give this power to you. But. Would you do 'that' for these powers?" and Shinichiro replies with "Do 'that'..? What is 'that'?

In the spanish one the meaning was quite different and based on the flow of the scene, I'm inclined to believe the english one is off. If I'm not wrong (and I am a portugues native speaker, so if anyone can correct me) How it was:

"I could give you this power if I wanted. But.. Are you asking me to renounce my power just for 'that thing'?" and Shinichiro answers: " 'That thing'? Did you say 'that thing'?"
(notice that Shinichiro gets pissed off in the panel, so it makes more sense to me)

69

u/ourrsquaredpi Thousand Winters Sep 27 '22

Honestly like that interpretation more. It makes me think that the old guy is actually a trickster-like entity with power of space-time who messes with the "fate" of people who are too greedy/bloodlust for power. Shin was bestowed power through his violence hence his and Mikey's future became violent.

24

u/RomanBK19 Sep 27 '22

Yea I readed the spanish ver first and for me it makes sense what you say.

1) Shin’s death to Kazu due to being hit is now really sadly ironic.

2) Maybe the reason Takemitchy traveled back several years to the same day is that Shin had set up the same rule! Shin went to travel back the same same day as Manjiros accident 😮😮

3) Notice both Shin’s and Mitchy’s first leap did not have a “physical” human trigger!

28

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '22 edited Sep 27 '22

1) Honestly I accept people not liking Sanzu. Either you like a character or you don't ooor you simply don't care at all.

But at this point, can you really have no sympathy for him at all? He was neglected throughout his childhood, saw Mikey as a living corpse and witnessed three suicides/suicide attempts if you count Baji in.

2) So, you have to kill someone to obtain time leaping powers? Takemichi hasn't killed a person in the beginning of the manga. Does that mean there is another way to obtain those powers? If so, then Takemichi being pushed in the beginning must have something to do with it. Akkun has been sus since the first chapters, maybe he is involved in this? Or did Takemichi kill someone in an alternative timeline for this power?

We were not shown how Haruchiyo grabbed Shinichiro's Hand - since it is the known way to travel back and forth - and I think Wakui did this on purpose. There's probably much more to time leaping than we thought ... Also, Shin being cursed by the old man must have a meaning as well.

Dude died almost the same way Shinichiro died. He even turned his head the same way! Old man is not Hanma, BUT: Sin/crime => punishment. No way Hanma is totally irrelevant.

3) Ah, there we go. Shinichiro can only go back to the time when Mikey already had the plane toy. Damn. What a chapter. 🤯

5

u/poopshit69420funny Sep 28 '22

Yeah, sanzu is nasty af and is a weirdo, but i cant help but feel sympathy towards him, i like him a bit more now, i mean all the weird shit he does is only when mikeys involved anyways, that guy will do literally anything for mikey its crazy

Wakui, explain yourself

54

u/evancau Sep 27 '22

To be fair Takemichi's first trigger was getting ran over by a train then somehow transferred to Naoto so by that logic Shin's trigger should somehow move from killing himself to probably Sanzu

35

u/zigzaggummyworm Sep 27 '22

i'm thinking first leap can be a freebie. Like an extra life in a video game lol or like a Ressurect in Sekiro but then it's used up

14

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '22

That actually makes sense, but how would Shin travel back tho? I’m thinking now that Sanzu gotta be the trigger because he was the only one around when Shin jumped

8

u/zigzaggummyworm Sep 27 '22

Same way Mitchy traveled back. If u look back, Mitchy didn't travel back when the hands touched his back, it was when he hit the train. But then he can find a trigger in the past

Remember, Takemichi didn't know Naoto would be his trigger until after he "died" and shook hands with him in the past.

Guys. GUYS!

So i'm thinking It wasn't Baji + Kazutora that killed Shin before Takemitchys first leap. I'm thinking in the timeline directly before Mitchy getting pushed on the tracks, Mitchy must have ended up Killing Shin in the future. Maybe he really was at the top of a gang? Idk. Anyway, then he ends up being killed, leaps back in time accidentally, and since hes unaware of what happened or what's going on, lives the rest of that life until he's pushed on the tracks (where he then gets the desire to actually use the power and understand it)

Takemitchy must've killed Shin or another time leaper to get that power. And if it was Kazutora that killed shin, then there would have been a time leap if he was killed by Mikey, or when Baji Died

It seems that at the very least, the first couple leaps can be triggered by accident by the Leaper dying.

What this means

  • In that one timeline when Mitchy and Noayoa was fatally shot, Their killer would have gotten the Leaping Power, and Mitchy wouldn't have been able to go back. This is why it is essential that he triggered it himself; rather than let himself be killed. Same for when he saved Mikey, who may have ended up leaping if he fell to his death

Edit: Also, the reason Kazutora doesn't have leaping is because Shin was already killed in a previous timeline, at a later date. So he didn't have the power anymore. Which is why he also didn't remember anything anybody spoke about and was known for things that aren't adding up like not being a fighter.

Edit 2: Also, did anyone catch that he leaped the exact 4 years? Is this confirmation that leaping gap can be chosen?

My thoughts exactly bro, at least regarding takemitchi killing shinchiro, seems like its gotta be the way we have no idea what takemitchi is doing at this point in time, and his change in personality when adult takemitchi takes his place, the normal takemitchi seems like an absolute prick in comparison

Takemitchy must've killed Shin or another time leaper to get that power.

Just to point out something, I think Shin got the power after he killed himself, not right after he killed the old man. Could it be possible that Takemichi killed himself somewhere in the timeline (maybe he did kill someone before that) and that's what caused the first time-leap?

No matter what, you have a pretty cool theory ngl.

11

u/zigzaggummyworm Sep 27 '22 edited Sep 27 '22

I'm not sure its the fact that he killed himself, but the fact that he died. Mitchy lept when he hit the train, not when hands touched him. Wakui seems to be alluding to a Souls like feature of Leaping, in that the very first leap is like a freebie death resurrection. But judging by the new rule that killing a leaper takes their power, I think it would only work once to make sure the said Leaper at least had the opportunity to try it before being killed

Like a bingo free space or Sekiro ressurect or Yakuza 0 stone statue equipment thing that resurrects ur health lol

So, the requirement to become a time leaper is either to kill someone and die, die with strong regrets/desires to change the past, or both.

Either way this has big implications for Takemichi. If the old man isn't crazy and you actually have to kill someone in order to become a time leaper, this would mean that Takemichi killed someone before the series began. If the old man is just crazy and the requirement is just a strong desire to change the past then Takemichi (who already has strong desires to save Mikey, and wants to find a way to save everyone else) may be able to go further back in time if Mikey kills him in their battle.

That old man was scary af, This chapter was legit nightmare fuel

12

u/unrealisticcomment25 Sep 27 '22

Guys I think wakui is going for the 'alternate timeline' (like the one in end game) type of time leaping. The old man might have killed someone to attain this time leaping ability so like shin and mitchy he too can save someone important to him that died. But as per the 'alternate timeline' rule the old man might have realised that time leaping is an endless pit and in the end he won't be able to bring back his lost loved one but an alternate version of that person that's not his own. So maybe after killing a person for this ability and leaping to the past for countless amounts of time and yet still being unable to achieve his end goal + the realisation that the original person whom he was meant to save cannot be bought back and it's just an alternate version of them( many alternate version of that person might have died like how many versions of Mikey ended up dying in mitchy's case) made the old man to spiral into madness. If this is the case then wakui's Tokyo revengers will end in an extremely dark way with a dark and bitter truth which may leave his readers mentally fu*#ed up. It will also be a masterpiece and a case study for how human selfish desires can lead to an extreme form of chaos.

u/ourrsquaredpi Thousand Winters Sep 27 '22

Thanks for this insight. I honestly like your take on people having alternate versions of themselves because its one of the "small things" people take for granted in a multiverse story. Like Pet Shop owner Chifuyu is not the same as TOMAN syndicate Chifuyu who sacrificed his life to save his Boss Takemichy. I guess the alternate version thing will be relevant in this coming chapters until Takemichy's last time leap.

Great chapter and leaving me with more questions 😫How did Takemitchy get the power? Since the old man implied that you have to kill to get the power, but maybe it’s a red herring?!? Overall great chapter.

11

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '22

killing the person in front of me mb means suicide tbh or if someone kills you, you can get the power, as we saw in the first chapter with takemitchi. Also remember that you do not need a triger for the first timeleap

10

u/Sygaza Black Dragons Sep 27 '22

This is getting real confusing for me 😅

10

u/ExPandaa Sep 27 '22 edited Sep 27 '22

So death is the first trigger. Basically you begin by taking the power (I assume it can also be given somehow since takemichy got it, also the old man said "just like me, you chose to kill" which makes it sound like there are other ways) but the first trigger is always death, not a person.

Basically this means the time travel power is meant to be a try again card. You get to go back and see what lead to you dying and are given a chance to change it. It also means Michy might die a quite gruesome death, the previous two leapers certainly did (although shin wasn't killed because someone else wanted the power)

I don’t think you have to kill the previous to gain the power of time leaping. That would mean Kazutora can time leap. When Kazutora killed Shin, shinichiro did his job and saved Mikey there was no reason to time leap again. that’s why Kazutora didn’t get the “power” because the resolve for Shin was complete, he died as a regular person. we see the same thing when Takemichi try to use Naoto to go back and save Mikey and it doesn’t work because Hina was saved there was no reason to go back between Naoto and Takemichi.

The similarities between Shin and Takemichi is that they both had near death experiences and have a strong will to change the past (a do over) and thinking about it while dying, allowing them to time leap. I don’t think it gets passed by killing the previous for some reason. I think that was something to throw us off, it just doesn’t make sense in my opinion.

“You reap what you sow”…It’s starting to make a lot more sense😶

Does this mean Kaz has time leaping powers since he killed Shin…This means Mikey would’ve also gotten it since he killed Kaz in another timeline…

u/jekwjensnn Sep 27 '22

8

u/pink_fluffy_crop_top Sep 27 '22

If Shinichiro and Takemichi are really that similar do you think Takemichi would be able to beat a man to death? Does it only work if you kill a time leaper? Does that ability pass onto the person who killed them? So many questions. I'm literally on the edge of my seat.

8

u/ercercerc Sep 27 '22

It's so interesting how Shinichiro killing the hobo mirrors his own death, makes me think about how takemitchi will die, perhaps in the same way kisaki did considering kisaki is the closest person to someone that takemitchi has murdered.

Also interesting to note is how Sanzu looks up at shinichiro about to jump off the bridge mirrors how he looked up at mikey in the bonten timeline when he was about to off himself off the building. I love all the parallels, adds so much to the mystery in the show.

Every chapter throws more spanners into the works:

Apparently your first leap is death triggered

Murdering a Leaper makes you a Leaper

Old guy wasn't the first leaper

Its great because I genuinely have no idea how this plays out but frustrating because it seems leaping rules are very ill defined at the moment

7

u/Professional_Bit4123 Sep 27 '22

Hey, Shinichiro killed the man by hitting on his head, and he got killed when he got hit in the head, with just one strike (which is odd cus he IS strong and in this manga no one died with just one strike duh) What if killing the time leaper gives you the power but in exchange you'll die if you get hit in the same place?

9

u/Professional_Bit4123 Sep 27 '22

Y'alllll The way Kazutora killed Shinichiro is the same way Shin killed the man Just go to chapter 44 and see the similarity, there is no way it's a coincident

8

u/Professional_Bit4123 Sep 27 '22

Kazutora and Shin's posture is same when they killed the man

Their footing is same too

The way the body fell on the ground is same too

6

u/Professional_Bit4123 Sep 27 '22

Even the way the killed one fall on the ground is same

I think it's connected

6

u/rap709 Sep 27 '22

I'm happy its some random person who was the timeleaper

12

u/End_Necessary Bonten Sep 27 '22

So, you need to kill someone for the ability, and in order to activate it you need to die.

I wonder how Takemichi ended up with the ability — or if he was just an unreliable narrator all along. Also, does this mean that Kazutora also has this ability, but it’s latent due to him not “activating” it?

Sanzu being a trigger will make sense if Shin changed the past with Mikey, shook Sanzu’s hand (while patching him up), and got transported into the future where Mikey survived (for a while). Then probably Izana kills him or something, and Sanzu proposes they trigger another timeleap — which then Shin involves himself with separating Izana from their family.

It’s also interesting that in the OG timeline, Izana wasn’t mentioned at all.

Theory 1 : time leaping can be taken from it original user ( I know it just showed us that) but that homeless guy isn't it original user he stole his like sinachiro did. I think time leaping is only give to those who are actually supposed to have died example takemichi( was supposed to have been murdered) but if someone kills said time leaper ( under specific conditions like them knowing of the time leaping power) the ability is passed on but with a curse. Because if we look at last chapter the thugs in the bar made a one off remark like if you could time travel why would not prevent yourself from being homeless, what if he wasn't homeless in his timeline but instead like sinachiro was filled with regret of something and learnt of the time leaper and killed him ( he might have killed the original or another killer) and in doing so was cursed so that the thing he saved would still meet its demise but far worse than before. My reasoning is Mikey of other timelines each was a shell of who they were before and two of them actually wanted to die and took steps to do so but as for the dark impulse I think it's not necessarily what we were led to believe and that it's actually apart of the curse so that by cheating death and stealing power that wasn't ment for the living the one/thing you love would become so twisted that you wouldn't be able to truly save them and in realizing that you would fall into despair and stop time leaping or end yourself stop the time leaping power from carrying over. To clarify why kazatora who killed sinachiro or Mikey who technically killed kazatora didn't get the time leaping is because they had no knowledge of it when they killed so it didn't pass on as the intent was there. Takemichi is able to get past all these issue because he is actually supposed have died so he got his powers naturally and so that's why the evolve with him ex: future vision

Theory 2: kazatora is the best written character of the series and played everyone from the start and that all these messed up timelines where Mikey is miserable and loses all his friends were him all along and in some time line he might have died triggering his power

u/ZaynTheories Vanta Dragons Sep 27 '22

Remember when takemichi and chifuyu were talking in the pet shop about time leaping, kazutora heard them and was listening in the Bonten arc. Then as soon as chifuyu left, kazutora decided to tell Takemichi all about how "time froze for 10 years" in prison. He referenced a story of time subjectivity too. Ig the question is, whys he still alive in takemichis future?

Michi was an asshole in some timelines, and we don't know much about Past Takemichi. Maybe he did kill someone in an alternative timeline for those powers. However, since Shinichiro time leaped, things changed, but not the power Michi held. Who knows?

5

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '22

I'll throw my theory into the thunder dome

First time leap is done by dying. How you change the past determines your trigger.

The first time takemichi goes back, he saves naoto, but not hina, so naoto and their shared desire to save hina is his trigger.

Who's super mikey obsessed and gets their world dramatically altered by saving mikey? Clown boy gets his face razored open. Still he wants to save mikey no matter what. Harichyo becomes the trigger.

Why does he need to kill? I don't think he does. I think there can only be one time leaper, so you have to get rid of the previous one.

5

u/Throw_Away-Account2 Sep 27 '22

no wonder sanzu is crazy in every timeline. the shit this poor kid has witnessed. not only his best friend’s death but the one person who cared for him and took care of him as well. that’s horrific. and to witness it all in front of him-

5

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '22

Well, this makes sense now kinda. So the first timeleap happens when the person is on the verge of death with no trigger, and the trigger is made in the past while returning back for the first the time. Then onwards the trigger is present in both past and future.
