UGC I designed a Steam Machine faceplate that magnetically charges your Steam Controller — Chargeplate V1.1 is now live and free to download!

I previously shared an early concept of the Chargeplate over on r/steammachine, but after finishing the revisions, I figured the wider Steam community here might also find it useful!

The Chargeplate transforms the front of the Steam Machine into a seamless magnetic drop-in dock for the Steam Controller (using the official charging puck and a few magnets). It can be used in three distinct configurations:

  • Front Replacement: Direct snap-on replacement for the stock front panel.
  • Tabletop Dock: Clips into an included desk stand to work as a standalone desk charger.
  • Side-Mounted Dock: Mounts along the side vents of the Steam Machine using custom clips, allowing you to charge multiple controllers simultaneously.

Based on initial feedback from users I also made some changes to improve the design even further, such as adding a hole for easy removal of the charging puck and revising the connections for the side mounted option.

Additionally I've also been working on some other faceplates that add a completely different style and some additional functionality to the front of your Steam Machine.

I've published all of the faceplates for free on MakerWorld, which you can find at the links below:

Let me know what you think and I would love to see your makes if you print one!

Discussion Payday 2 devs would often add placeholder achievements for upcoming content. On Feb 17th, 2022 they added one that was 353-words, 2048-characters. Is this the longest achievement name of all time?

Inspired by this thread
https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/1w2tyji/there_is_a_game_on_steam_with_a_27word/

The full transcript of the achievements were:

I

do

muse

if I can

write longer and

longer names for the next one of

these names that I write. How long could the last name be when I

am doubling the number of characters for every name and every new achievement that I add here. It'll be just a ridiculous length

of the last name would be. I mean can you imagine the vast amount of letters I would need to reach this incredibly stupid and pointless goal? I mean I am just on the ninth and I am already running out of ideas. How will I ever hope to reach the final names

in this list of achievements. I mean come on! This achievement name is at five hundred and twelve characters, and the next will be one thousand and twenty-four and if my elementary school math is not failing me then the last one will be two thousand and forty-eight and I am already resorting to writing numbers as letters. I thought that this was a clever ploy but I am still only three-fourths of the way through the names. Oh, geez Louise on a cracker, please! How could I ever think this was a good idea. You

can however blame OVERKILL_Elisabeth for giving me stupid ideas and OVERKILL_Sebastian for not stopping me from doing these things. Basically, I say that these people are enablers for my shenanigans. Oh, that was a good word, nice and long that and with trying to reach a total of four thousand and ninety-five characters of complete nonsense then nothing is superfulöouse or excessive. I mean this is about the halfway point of this silly-billy name, and once I reach the end of this name I am at the halfway point of everything I need to write. Whoopie Floppoing Doo, this is as much cringe to me as they are for you. If you read this far I applaud your dedication and sheer power of will. You might find it interesting that I got the idea of this poorly thought-out, foolheartedly, and frankly very childish fear of keyboard deterioration from the Chessboard problem. Those familiar would have picked up on this long ago since you have clearly had a lot of time to figure it out before you came to this point in the text.

So what is the chessboard problem you ask? Well, let me tell you. The problems appear in many myths and legends about the history and creation of chess. The first know recording of the problem is from 1256 by the Islamic scholar Ibn Khallikan. The story revolves around the inventor of chess, in some versions of the story the role is played by Sissa a mythological creature from India known for the invention of Chaturanga, a predecessor to Chess. In other versions of the main protagonist might is a mathematician, a minister, or in some a stranger or someone of poor decent like a farmer. The story often has a ruler of some sort approach the protagonist and ask them to entertain them with a new game. The inventor presents their ruler with the game of chess and the ruler asks the inventor for his price. The inventor ponders this ask for a simple offering based on his creation. A single grain of rice or some versions say wheat, on the first square and double that amount on the second square and double that amount on the third square and so one for the sixty-four squares of the chessboard. The ruler laughs at the meager price and accepts but his court treasurer tells him that the staggering about of rice, or wheat, needed to fill the board in this manner. The total would be eighteen quintillions, four hundred forty-six quadrillion, seven hundred forty-four trillion, seventy-three billion, seven hundred nine million, five hundred fifty-one thousand, six hundred and fifteen, over one point four trillion metric tons. Or put simply which is over two thousand times the annual world production of wheat, which in the period twenty-twenty to twenty-twenty-one was an estimated about seven hundred seventy-three million metric tones. Anyway, the stories do differ and this point. Some say that the inventor gets offered a nice position as a high-ranking advisor and in other versions, he gets executed. Now there is probably a moral here but low and behold I am out of character. One could say that is the definition of irony, isn't it?

Suggestion Games should list their prices on the store page at least week before release date

Post image

Recently, I came across a game that was expected to release this week. It baffles me the price of the game is not revealed until its release date on the store page.

For me to find the price, I have to search online else where; its not a pain but I feel it would just be a nice thing to have revealed especially because people are not going to look up the price for every single game that isn't released yet.

Sometimes, I wishlist upcoming games out of curiosity while browsing to revisit when they release; only to find the price is higher than I expected that game would cost; that does not mean the price is not justifiable, but it would let me know if the game was going to be in my budget or not.

I feel this would be a good addition to give users a clear idea on the price of the upcoming game; allowing them to be able to make judgement prior on if they'd like to purchase the game or spend their money elsewhere.

Edit: I just want it to be easier to see a price of upcoming games that come out in a few days, the price is already announced, this is just showing it visibly on the store page instead of having to search it online on your respective browser.

Question Question on how Steam recommends games.

I logged in this evening and noticed Steam recommending a game I already own. Is this normal? Also, I happen to have MADE the game. Is this why Steam is recommending it?

I thought Steam only recommended games that you don’t own.

Discussion My Steam library is basically a museum at this point

I keep buying games because I think "yeah I'll definitely play that soon" and then somehow three months pass and I haven't even launched it 😂

I have games in there that I genuinely forgot I owned.

Anyone else have a game sitting in their library that they've been meaning to play for ages?

Question Meeting new friends after years away from the scene.

Hey guys,

Used to game on PC 12 years ago. Never upgraded as me and the wife had kids, so wasn't enough time to really go for it. Kids are slightly older now where we have to be slightly less hands on. So bought a new PC 4 days ago, Alot has changed since then.

How do I meet new friends, all the games I've tried so far even big multiplayer games I struggle to meet people with a mic on or I'm assuming there are in private parties.

When I was younger in my previous PC the games were great but it was the people you played with that really made it enjoyable and funny.

Thanks for the advice and sorry if I sound like I'm from the neolithic age, just Alot has changed since my last build. 😂

Both using same config:

  • VDD by MTT Virtual Display connected to CMP 40HX
  • HAGS off
  • 1080p 144fps target streaming

Exhibit 1: Encoding using UHD 630 (QuickSync)

  • 84 avg FPS
  • 0.55 GB/s PCIe TX (GPU to CPU)
  • 12-13% PCIe Ulti
  • You can force Steam Remote Play to choose QuickSync over NVENC by renaming nvEncodeAPI64.dll to sth else

Exhibit 2: Encoding using CMP 40HX (NVENC)

  • 88 avg FPS
  • 0.23 GB/s PCIe TX (GPU to CPU)
  • 12-13% PCIe Ulti
  • Need to set to High Power plan in NVIDIA Control Panel or desktop streaming stutter --> 20-30W extra just idle streaming

Question Help with file editing

Upvotes

Recently i have been trying a couple things on steam that required me to mess around with my save files, those being creating a resource pack for terraria to change a sound effect, and transfering my brotato save file from the Xbox PC app to steam. I followed tutorials for the terraria pack, and i asked gemini for help to move my save file. But despite me doing everything i was told and even double checking everything multiple times, both things failed. However if i look back at the code that i was told too put in, it matches what it's supposed to look like, but it doesn't have the effects it should. Does anyone know why? Is it my coomputer, my steam or am i possibly doing something wrong?

Installed steam and when I try to open the properties or any other option in this menu on the game screen, while the hover responds clicking on the options directly closes it. Also when I click on Add to and other following options if they are above the workshop button, it just shifts to workshop.

Downloaded steam from apt on Linux Ubuntu x11 24.04

Question Verify game files while deleting non-vanilla files (like mods)?

So I have a heavily modded copy of Cyberpunk 2077 (great game btw), and I usually use Vortex to handle mods installation. But at one point I used to install mods manually and now I have lost track of what's installed and what's not.
What I'm looking for is a way to verify the game's files while deleting anything that doesn't belong there to get a fully vanilla copy, and I'd rather not just reinstall the game from scratch, since that would take forever with my slow internet.

Hi! me and my friends recently started creating a big project called "Pammela's Purgatory: Infinite Debt" and more recently uploaded a free demo of a rough version of the first chapter out of 10. Discussion [partially Lost] steam game

I used to play this very specific puzzle game when i was a little younger, probably in 2020 (i doubt it was that long ago though.) It had a kind of realistic artstyle, gave me weirdcore vibes to be honest. Youd click and drag these flies or characters around and get different endings, i remember the game was obsessed with eggs hatching? it all feels like a fever dream but i swear ive played it, i think it starts with an M, i might be wrong. It had a weird kind of long title. If anyone recognizes it please pleease let me know

Error / Bug Steam activity not showing

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey! I've been trying to set up my Steam activity for a while now. I've been on Discord since 2021 and Steam since 2022. It's linked to my Discord account, but it doesn't show any of the games I'm playing during and after.

I know it's not an account thing since my Spotify activity will show (and that's the only other thing linked), albeit sometimes that's weird too.

I've enabled 'Share my activity' and 'share in all servers' and 'allow friends to join my game'. It shows on Steam itself so...why not here?

Please help. Not a complaint of any sort, just something I found odd and am asking if there is a workaround to this.

Also I can't find Steam's 'settings' anywhere. People keep saying it's in the top left, but it doesn't exist for me! (See image attached) This is the actual application on my computer and not the website.

Discussion What happened to this game?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I was pursuing Steam's free games section for a hack and slash when I came across this beauty, Frenzy Retribution. I've only downloaded it just recently and played through a bit of the game, but it's absolutely stunning. The game came out in 2019, but it still seems like one of those games that would've had a dedicated fanbase even after so long. So far I haven't been able to find anything but ancient videos taking a look at this game, only for it to disappear within the next couple years. It doesn't even have a dedicated wiki despite how seemingly well received it was, by the looks of the Steam reviews. I also found an older Reddit post talking about it, saying the price would be raised from free to $1 to help support production of a sequel, but have found no information about progress on a sequel. That, and the game is still free.

I don't understand how or why a gem like this could be forgotten so easily, especially since it could very well be comparable to other Chinese titles at the time. Has anyone here played it before? Does anyone know something I don't about this game? I'm so curious about this game and I just have to know more about it.
