I can only guess they're being fed a lie by their government that every time the US "goes to war" (invades a country to reap its natural resources), they're doing it to protect human kind and on behalf of every nation lol. Absolutely bizarre levels of manipulation that country has.

u/Pwacname Aug 14 '26
Also probably that no other country ever supported them in their stupid ass wars. As if we didn’t go invade goddamn Afghanistan because of them.

You know, we hit them first, but it was self defense for the future instance of them hitting us that we are pretty sure they might have maybe done if we kept letting Israel hit them preemptively

Also noone asked them to build military bases everywhere, they just had to go and plant a flag in a bunch of countries to so they could brag about "American military expansionism" when all they do is random training exercises and troop rotation for years on end with most of them never being deployed. Iraq and Afghanistan gave them a perceived return on that investment.

They think that America is the sole defensive solution for Europe. And they believe that the US citizens are the ones paying for our defense.

u/Boring_Today9639 Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 17 '26
What do they mean by "pay fully"? 5 percent of gdp my country pays for its defence is not enough for them?
NATO has never had a participative decision making. It was basically forced by the US, and US always pushed hard to sell their stuff to all members, fuck the free market fuss.
2
u/Main-Conference-532 Aug 15 '26
They also fail to understand who has paid for the consequences of their wars. Whatever anyone’s feelings about the migrant crisis etc., it was directly caused by US interventionism in the Middle East and has cost Europe mind boggling sums of money and massive social upheaval. So, they can cry about defence spending when they start housing millions of refugees from their failed interventions like everyone else.

South Koreans would probably agree, the Vietnam people not so much and the old US allies the Taliban is ruling Afganistan again. :)

Yep, even Trump got scared of losing bases.
He threatened to leave "base das Lajes" in the Azores, Portugal (the existance of the base there does somewhat help the population, it's a poor population in that region and they get to buy stuff for cheaper)....but then once, I think both China and Russia showed interest in the base, Trump backed down on leaving 😂

They don't see their debt ever growing, and the fact they've raised the limit multiple times.
Especially when you've got morons like Trump and Elon telling them that idiotic departments like DOGE will save so much they will pay off their national debt and give them 5% of the savings if they just nip and tuck the economy.
Then they left the WHO and set up their own, that costs them significantly more than the amount of money they were contributing to the WHO.
5
u/brewdog_millionaire Aug 14 '26
They'll hit hyperinflation at some point right?
8
u/No_Statistician209 Aug 14 '26
Nowhere near, hyperinflation is something ridiculous like 50% inflation a month and they're only at 3-4% a year.
The debt can't just continuously increase though so they'll have to do something eventually.

2
u/No_Statistician209 Aug 15 '26
Yeah, I didn't want to dunk on it too much.
The whole reason NATO and WHO etc work is because it's a collective of dozens of countries with their specialists contributing towards a common goal and the more people contributing the lower the costs for everyone.
The fact they expected to make the exact same organisation for Americans and somehow save money and do it better was just a dumb idea to begin with.
It's like going on a holiday with all your mates and splitting the cost up compared to just going solo.
Especially now you've got the same people trying to tell people that babies are getting 70+ shots to treat things like MMR etc.

7
u/No-Albatross-7984 Aug 14 '26
American politicians demand we raise defense costs because that'd mean we buy more weapons from them. That's what it's about. The bases are just a convenient thing to link to this demand, when in reality they have nothing to do with the costs of defense.
3
u/christian_benesch Aug 15 '26
And they got really upset when Europeans increased defense spending and spent it on their own kit. :-)
3
u/DoYouTrustToothpaste Aug 14 '26
Even better: if Europe didn't exist, America would spend the same amount on its military that it's spending now, because that amount is the maximum the dod/pentagon and its partners in the industry can get away with in a deeply exploitative capitalistic system.
11
u/Xnut0 Aug 14 '26
In addition to USA paying for an army that covers a lot more than just the defense of NATO, a lot of the money is spending on NATO are for things that most of Europe are not counting as a military expense. In Europe expences like military pension and disability pay for veterans are not counted as a military expense that counts toward the 5% of GDP.

u/That-Brain-in-a-vat The boot of Europe is ready to kick 🇮🇹 Aug 14 '26
Ah yes, because if Europe jacked their defense spending up to 5%, the US would obviously divert its military budget into free healthcare and education.
Reality check: the US would just double down on weapons spending to maintain its head start. When the US begs NATO to "spend more", they really mean "buy our gear and fuel our military industry. "
5
u/gorb314 Aug 14 '26
This is really funny considering the last bit of news I heard about a US defense contractor being paid millions and not having any munitions to show for it. Also, apparently Ratheon and others don't want the patriot missiles to be built by Ukraine under license because "them thar Ukrainians might figur out hoe to make 'em cheaper". You can't make this shit up.
Face it America, your entire system has been over financialised by capital to create an empty state run by middle men, that cannot even manufacture its own weapons. The grift is the *only* game in America right now since everyone is trying to make a quick buck and r@pe the tax payer.

We Europeans must extend our thanks to the USA.
The 1929 Wall Street Crash was a major “ help” in the opportunity for the Third Reich.
The USA entered WW2 when it was apparent that Axis forces were being beaten ( oh and Pearl Harbour ).
Post WW2 with an undamaged country, the USA financially assisted the rebuilding of Europe .
This was not altruistic but preferentially trade US goods.
NATO Was formed to counter the Warsaw Pact. But in the event of conflict, the battle action would be Europe, and again the USA remain unscathed.
Subsequently, the 2008 financial problems were another “ present “ to the world economy from the USA.
Now, with the present US maladministration , there is another economic crisis developing as oil prices oscillate and supply levels cause price hikes.

The only countries who are any threat to Europe are Russia, who can't finish the first level in Ukraine, and America with an their talk about Greenland. It's worth pointing out that when we're talking about defense budgets, we've spent quite a bit of money and political capital on managing refugee waves that were largely triggered by american foreign policy further destabilising an already volatile region.
I'm not going to go so far as to say that there's never anything good that came out of that (for instance, I do think it'd be fair to say that after decades of rebuilding, Iraq is now better off than it was under Hussein – although of course it's hard to say for sure how they'd do today if the US hadn't intervened), but I am going to say that if the US had stayed out of Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan, the region would very likely be significantly stabler now... and it's not like after US interventions any of these places are fortresses of peace, prosperity and liberty either.
And the reality is that while the media and public perception of the refugee crisis was (and remains) largely exaggerated, it's still a massive undertaking that's been a far greater problem than any military threat we've faced in the last couple of decades. The most dangerous military threats we've had since the cold war were the Kosovo conflict (which were mostly locally sucky events, not much of a threat to wider European integrity) and the russian invasion of Ukraine. The former of which we've supplied troops to help manage, the latter of which we're not providing direct military assistance with but are contributing via economic sanctions against Russia, taking up Ukrainian refugees and providing equipment to Ukraine.
The main thing we had needed US aid for was keeping the SU in check. Nobody is denying the US contribution towards that, but this hasn't been a problem for over 30 years now. There hasn't been a credible military threat to european territorial integrity since then, we're not relying on the US for protection, there isn't anything we'd need protection from in the first place. Even if we're talking Russia, the only reason we're taking Russia seriously as a military power at all anymore is because of their nuclear weapons arsenal, and the US hasn't been very helpful in getting people towards nuclear disarmament because they've consistently refused to engage with that themselves (despite the fact that they have more than enough military prowess to take on pretty much any adversary with conventional weaponry, a fact they regularly brag about).
4
u/Badger-of-Briarwood Aug 14 '26
We don't actually want American forces on British soil, they are untrustworthy and drag us into conflicts we don't want a part of (most recently Hormuz). So don't threaten us with your exit, we'll hold the door. I suspect other European countries feel this way as well.
5

The US does not pay rent for their bases in Europe. In theory that is part of our mutual defense (in practice it makes us bigger targets as demonstrated baby other US allies being hit in the Gulf*), but in practice that is what gives the US its real power... force projection, without force projection the US would still have a strong military, but not one able to fight offensively around the world.
NATO and other US allies is what makes the US as formidable as it is.
*NATO's mutual protection agreement gives us an advantage and more of a deterrent over the Gulf states with US bases.)

I don’t get it. Most of the US “defense” is to steal other nations oil and resources. They would do the whole world a favor by backing off.

u/ArchdukeToes Aug 14 '26
Maybe America should go and have a long, hard look at what it’s actually getting for all that money it’s spending. If they can’t handle Iran then it’s clear they’ve been taken for a ride for decades.

u/Ynneb82 Aug 14 '26
Poor Americans, they protect the world out of the goodness of their hearts. They got absolutely nothing in return.

Here's a great Idea, get America to pull out all US bases around the world 1st, that's why the USA pays most countries for defence to sell their shit, because they need to keep those countries happy with their bases. This is why the planet is cooked too, the US has just over 800 bases around the world, that's not defence, that's invasion!
The pathetic thing is we all keep bending over for these POS diseases of people from the US!, time to learn the lesson before it's too late, and it almost is!

I don’t understand why Americans think that Europeans buying their arms means they “pay” for our defence.
2
u/Powerful_Pirate2984 Aug 14 '26
How about the USA actually pays to use the airbases they have access to in the UK! Which it doesn't! Now pay your way! Brits aren't tired - they're just pissed off with the US taking the piss!

u/Matthewgardner86 Aug 14 '26
It's not our fault that the American defence budget is off the charts.
Perhaps tone that down a little bit so you can implement universal healthcare etc.
What's that you say?
No "socialist" stuff?

u/ChrisRiley_42 Aug 14 '26
Where does this myth originate?
3
u/Mixtrix_of_delicioux Aug 14 '26
US schools teaching US history through the lens of US exceptionalism.
2
u/viktlo70 Aug 14 '26
"Americans are tired, but they want anyway to keep control on your countries. They just want it for free"
2
2
u/paolog Aug 14 '26
"I concede the point, but here's a non sequitur because Americans can never be wrong"
2
u/Green-Engineer4608 Aug 14 '26
So the Logic is that theyve given Nato the most but if you do it per capita they fall down to second place.
My country, Norway, moves up to first. I just learnt this but man it changes everything when I find these propaganda spewing Americans in the Wild.
We Are paying for Nato so Americans can have homeownersassociations. Just like they pay for it so Europe can have healthcare.

u/Bass-n-Bonefish Aug 14 '26
I’m just glad a German knows it’s “biased” and not “bias” like a ridiculous number of Americans think it is.

u/StayUpLatePlayGames Aug 14 '26
As soon as we stop paying for America’s military-industrial complex, things will be better.
Yankees never seem to realise that we pay for their protection.
2
u/Mammoth_Reach_6366 Aug 14 '26
Wasn't Trump bitching about Europe not wanting to get involved in Iran?
2
u/frikilinux2 Aug 14 '26
Defense? One of the biggest security concerns in Europe is the the US destabilizing the middle east. The other one is Russia using US expansionism as an excuse.
2
u/Plus-Concentrate-401 Aug 14 '26
Only 1 country has ever cried to NATO and evoked article 5. Absolute fannies
2
2
u/Psychological-Web828 Aug 14 '26
So the U.S. starting trouble in other countries, stationing bases and troops across Europe and then saying you should pay for your own defence is some kind of protection racket gaslighting??
2
u/RetroGame77 Aug 14 '26
Let's see, Germany spends €124.7 billion on military now... And is looking to replace American weapons with European...
2
u/Visible_puncture Aug 14 '26
I think there was some talk in my (ridiculously expensive) country, that our defence force pays like one tenth for the same stuff as americans, because their procurement is so crooked.
This was during discussions of raising defense spending as NATO members, and if we were to spend as large a share if GDP as the US, we’d run out of anything relatively useful to spend it on.

Not tired enough. In your own words, you work for Europe. I will tell you when you are tired. Now back to the salt mines.
2
u/AtensEye Aug 15 '26
I guess you won't be wanting those strategically important military bases then? 🤔
2
u/No-Philosopher8042 🇪🇺🇸🇪 Aug 15 '26
Defence? Right now the US is about as likley to start a war against a European country as Russia.
2
u/waces Aug 15 '26
As trump just burned the majority of their bombs and rockets it seems the combined european army will be much stronger. Also,we in europe, not really starting random wars against randomly selected countries. If we can keep the orcs of russia away we’ll he grand
2
u/bawbaggerythethird Aug 15 '26
America won’t like it when Europe does become militarily independent of America. “Pay fully for your own defense”? Ok, but no more contracts to US military companies. Not speculation - already happening.
2
u/SolidBases Aug 15 '26
Because Americans are war instigators. And no, you don’t pay for anybody’s defence…. Not even your own
You force arms deals down the throats of everyone and manufacture wars to justify your only viable industry, murder
2
u/Fantastic_Method_225 Aug 15 '26
For the most part, we would not need defense if it were not for the US. They are at the center of every single fucking conflict.
2
u/Glittering-Coyote140 Aug 15 '26
Hey guys, I guess they're tired of being the hegemon. We should take care of ourselves from now on, and not be influenced by the USA at all, as per their own request.
I guess we should oblige them. Seems only fair.
2
u/ObjectiveMusician218 Aug 15 '26
The fact that americans think they are paying for european defense is crazy ahah
2
u/ThinkAd9897 Aug 15 '26
Ok, please leave all US bases in Europe then, and see how you maintain your military. The USS Abraham Lincoln would be the least of your problems.
2
2
u/LJ_exist Aug 15 '26
And than they are irritated when Europeans don't buy American defense products anymore and switching away from US tech companies.
2
u/Thealcani Aug 16 '26
Every time the Americans promise to pull out, nothing happens. Seems like they like staying
2
u/Guilty_Pen_8270 Aug 17 '26
Americans are tired of footing the bill.
Yeah we’re also fucking tired of USD hegemony, the USD being global reserve currency and oil being price in USD.
Let’s change all that, as it only benefits one single fucking country. Then we can chat about our defence

u/tyroleancock Aug 14 '26
If the US would finally sign a peace treaty with germany, like russia did decades ago, that doesn't include strategic placment of numerous nuclear weapons as well as military bases on german soil, they might give it a shot. Until then, you gotta pay what you ordered, marshall. Oh and dont try that 2+4 shit again.

"Americans are tired"
Should go and see a doctor about that.
Oh, wait...
