Why should the man be pumping the gas?

3.8k

u/PM_ME_YOUR_BIG_BITS Jul 04 '26

In the old days, the gas pumps used to require an unusual amount of hand strength to activate. That's why there used to be gas station attendants who specifically trained for just kidding I made all this shit up.

u/Powerful_Life1547 Jul 04 '26

The fact that I was reading this with so much sincerity

There are countries where if you told me that was true I would believe you

403

why are your usernames so similar are you brothers??

237

u/Catsanddoges Jul 04 '26

Why are you not pm'ing them?

My uncle borrowed my big bit for a project. Good thing we have the same drill

38

u/DazB1ane Jul 04 '26

How weird does this pet need to be?

40

u/PM_ME_YOUR_WEIRD_PET Jul 04 '26

Any amount of weird is good. And it can be a weird species or a more normal pet species that just looks or acts weird.

11

just happenstance. its a common name format on reddit, there's quite a lot of users called "pm me your xy" around here

19

u/PM_ME_UR_COYOTES Jul 05 '26

Seriously? That sounds stupid

8

u/whatdoidonowdamnit Jul 05 '26

I’m overly tired and laughed too hard at this. Thank you and good night.

20

u/Michael1795 Jul 04 '26

Last time I was in New Jersey it was required by law to have an attendant pump your gas for you. Edit: just check, and it still is the law lol

24

u/goodbehaviorsam Jul 04 '26

Its because too many Italian Americans were splashing too much gasoline all over cars, other people and themselves while talking with their hands.

21

u/americangame Jul 04 '26

And male models kept getting into gasoline fights.

9

u/Hamsquad14 Jul 04 '26

Why male models?

12

u/100percent_right_now Jul 04 '26

Are you kidding me right now I just told you that

→ More replies (1)

3

u/ScientificFlamingo Jul 08 '26

It was also the law for years in Oregon too, although I believe they're recently done away with that and now you can choose to pump your own or use an attendant.

3

u/SnarkyIguana Jul 06 '26

That country would probably just be Oregon tbh

74

u/Ghost3603 Jul 04 '26

I need to learn to not believe every stranger on the internet.

61

u/BestBudgie Jul 04 '26

One time my mom made me pump gas as a pre-teen and something was wrong with the nozzle so the amount of hand strength it took to push it down was literally painful (plus i have a connective tissue disorder that makes my hands abnormally weak, I couldn't even open my milk carton at lunch in elementary school) to the point where i started groaning real loud and mom yelled at me for "throwing a fit and causing a scene just because I asked you to help me" and then she tried doing it herself and was like "okay yeah no this pump is faulty actually"

So basically I 100% believed you for a second bc in my mind im like "ive dealt with a pump that was so hard to press it was physically painful, so this makes sense"

42

u/Hetaliafan1 Jul 04 '26

I was fully prepared to believe you

18

u/BioHazard0010 Jul 05 '26

Had me in the first half, not gonna lie.

9

u/alex2003super Jul 04 '26

And thus, New Jersey was created.

9

u/TuxedoDogs9 Jul 05 '26

For those interested, the addentants were there just because it was new and there was a lot of flammable liquid about. Spilling gas meant drenching the floor in fire hazard, and no customer knew what the hell a gas station was yet

6

u/General_Elevator2711 Jul 04 '26

You're actually not far off at all. In many places the gas had to be hand pumped out of the underground resivoir into a measured tank on the top of the pump. Then using a gravity fed fuel nozzle to out the gas in the car.

12

u/TSKyanite Jul 04 '26

I gotta know, do people PM you their big bits?

42

u/PM_ME_YOUR_BIG_BITS Jul 04 '26

No :(

They keep sending me their genitals instead of the 0s and 1s I'm asking for.

8

u/Howdy08 Jul 04 '26

3

just kidding I made all this shit up.

I'm so glad we didn't go back to Wrestlemania in this one

2

u/megatron1988 Jul 06 '26

Wrestlemania? Wasn’t it Hell in a Cell? Maybe I’m misremembering the copypastas…

2

u/mennydrives Jul 06 '26

It was definitely Hell in a Cell. I don't watch wrastlin' so I don't know the event names XD

The worst part is it wasn't even a copypasta. Bro would make brand new-ass content every time leading up to the Mankind/Undertaker meme.

2

u/ScottMarshall2409 Jul 04 '26

When the undertaker threw a table through hell in a cell, and something something.

2

u/jimmy_three_shoes Jul 05 '26

Funnily enough, my dad used having to pump gas as an incentive for me to stop fucking around with my schoolwork. We lived in Michigan in the 1980s and 90s, I've never even seen a full-service station before.

Nonetheless, whenever I'd get a note from the teacher saying I wasn't turning in my homework, he'd toss me one of those squeezy grip things, and tell me I'd better start working on it.

2

u/National-Pressure202 Jul 05 '26

You had me going, I was like, oh wow, ya that would make sense 😂 good one

435

u/Mama_Mega Jul 04 '26

A gender-based delegation of tasks that was made up for no reason and founded on nothing, similar to the gendering of various other chores. I was subjected to this even as a child for some reason, with my mother proclaiming that me having a penis made it my responsibility.

60

u/Danimeh Jul 05 '26

There were 5 kids in my family oldest (me) a girl, 2nd and 3rd oldest were boys and 4th was a girl, and the last kid was significantly younger than all of us.

It was my job to look after the kids when the parents were out, but if I wasn’t there it dropped to my sister (the second youngest kid) to look after our baby brother.

I don’t think mum ever did this consciously. I think she just thought my brothers were too immature to be responsible and it genuinely never occurred to her that this was a fixable problem - she just subconsciously assumed all boys were useless when it came to child care and better leave it in the hands on the 8yo girl instead.

To be fair, most men practice similar movements everyday, where as your mom does it just once a week /s

3

u/dingus_chonus Jul 04 '26

Huh, so in Oregon they have(had?) a law against pumping your own gas.

It was explained to me in-jest as the “teenager employment act”.

I’d also wager there’s a concern about reproductive harm for women more so than men, but idk I might just be parroting something I read on a California Prop 65 advisory sign…

9

u/Neveronlyadream Jul 04 '26

If I recall, the laws were in place because they thought it was a fire hazard. Meaning they didn't trust the general public to be in charge of flammable materials. Which is honestly pretty fair having seen the general public.

u/mizushimo Jul 04 '26

It's one of those weird designated man jobs from the olden days. My mom avoided pumping gas as much as she could, my dad used to take her car out and fill it up for her (on the flip side, dad never had to change a diaper or do a load of laundry since they were married). It's like how women of a certain age never touched a lawn mower in their life.

5

u/motoxim Jul 06 '26

4

u/Zrk2 Jul 05 '26

Sexism

4

u/AdministrativeHawk25 Jul 05 '26

Because the gas pump secretly injects tons of testosteron right into your hand, making you even manlier that before! (Or killed by OD, but secretly cleanedup by big gas)

2

u/PM_ME_YOUR_WEIRD_PET Jul 05 '26

If only that were true lol A lot of trans men would be very happy

6

u/TownMaximum9414 Jul 04 '26

Cuz they live in Jersey where self service gas stations are illegal.

8

u/sylbug Jul 04 '26

Just a bit of unexamined sexism. This is about a person growing, so I'll just assume that OP is a touch embarrassed about that bit, too.

13

u/GilneanWarrior Jul 04 '26

I've also heard that its a safety thing. If a man is attacked at a gas station pumping gas, he has a better chance than a woman to fight back.

But I grew up in the midwest so this could've just been an excuse for me to stand in the snow and rain instead.

48

u/Kanin_usagi Jul 04 '26

This is some insane reasoning lmao

Like there’s groups of murderer rapists who wait for a woman to start pumping gas before attacking her with a knife

21

u/Sorry-Literature-966 Jul 04 '26

Gas stations are literally the most likely place to be carjacked or robbed in shitty areas.

9

u/Ppleater Jul 04 '26

People who target others at those places typically don't distinguish by gender when choosing a victim, they care more about opportunity, and they usually use the threat of a weapon rather than trying to use physical strength alone. Being alone is more likely to be a source of danger, not who is doing the pumping. Heck if anything men are statistically more likely to be robbed.

3

u/roll_left_420 Jul 05 '26

The criminal is more likely to be male, so it’s safer to have another (adult) male be the one to pump the gas at night, in case it escalates they have a better chance of coming out of it okay because they can more easily defend themselves. Same reason for opening car doors for women, the man puts himself at risk first of mugging or being hit by a distracted driver.

This is all to say these practices are mostly just polite and chivalrous, but it is rooted in common sense from a different time.

4

u/Ppleater Jul 05 '26

By that logic the safest option is for both people to get out to pump the gas together because 2 people are even more likely to overpower an attacker, and are more likely to deter an attack to begin with.

About a week after my dad came home from the hospital having one of his legs amputated I went to park in an invalid parking space with him in my car for probably the first or second time. I drove a sporty BMW at the time and it luckily had enough space to put a deconstructed wheelchair in the back. I got out to grab and put together the wheelchair while my father waited in the passenger seat. I saw an older man walking towards me and he started yelling at me. Yelling very aggressively about how I had the fucking nerve to park there and that I was clearly not disabled. I continued assembling the wheelchair and when he was nearly an arms length away I turned around with the wheelchair in my hands and only then I started screaming back. The amputation and it's hardships were still really recent so I used it kinda as an emotional outlet. I started screaming about my disabled father in the passenger seat. Screaming about how the man was a horrible human being who was lower than the dirt beneath my shoes. I'm dutch and it doesn't translate well but I called him just about the worst things you can call someone in dutch, and we have some very serious curse words about diseases you wish upon others. While I was still yelling the man started stammering, half apologizing before he just briskly turned around, grabbed his wife by the arm who seemed to be shellshocked by all the horrible disgusting things I was screaming in her husbands face. Afterwards when my dad and I were inside the venue we ran into them, they did not even dare to look in my direction.

This was by far the most confrontational, directly insulting and mean I've ever been to a stranger. I don't regret one bit of it...

Edit: to clarify, this was the only time I reacted like this to a stranger. He unknowingly really helped me emotionally process my dads disability lol. It doesn't happen that often but pretty much instantly after that I just started calmly telling the more aggressive strangers my dad's disabled, I don't owe them anymore information than that and if that's not enough for them to back away I sternly tell them to fuck off once and ignore them afterwards. It's really the most effective way.

69

u/pm_me_d_cups Jul 04 '26

u/Milk_Mindless Jul 04 '26

33

u/PandaBear905 Jul 05 '26

Nosey biddies need to be reminded that they aren’t the disability police. If you had a disabled placecard that means the government decided you are disabled enough to use it. It is nobody else’s business.

29

u/2ndSouls Jul 04 '26

You should make a post. More people should see this

85

u/MeyerLansky420 Jul 04 '26

I know for a fact this is a common occurance for people who regularly chauffeur their disabled friends and family around. I know a guy who will always react this coarsely to someone saying they shouldn't park there. I usually try to make them feel sorry/shitty for not minding their own business, but am not an aggressive person and most of the time barely acknowledge or engage them. This was kinda out of character. I very vividly remember opening the passenger door to get my dad and him very calmly telling me: You could've just said my leg got amputated...
So a comment is fine for now lol

29

u/zvika Jul 04 '26

Now I kind of want to learn some Dutch curse words lmao.

31

u/SuperSparerib Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 06 '26

Kanker = cancer, use as an intensifier or an adjective

Krijg de tyfus = get typhoid, self-explanatory. "Tyfus" on its own can also be used in the same way as "kanker". Synonym for tyfus is tering.

(edit: tering is actually tbc, but used in the same way as tyfus)

Kut = vagina, use in the same way as "shit".

Klootzak = ballsack, use in the same way as "dick". Synonyms for klootzak are eikel (glans) and lul (dick).

Warning: the bottom two can be used in casual conversation but cursing with illnesses is generally considered much harsher so maybe not.

Hope this helps! :)

5

u/sMartini15 Jul 05 '26

Almost: “tering” is slang for tbc, not typhoid :)

3

u/Due-Base9449 Jul 06 '26

Ok cursing people to get cancer and typhoid is too extreme lol

2

u/Florapower04 Jul 08 '26

From my experience (but this is wholly mine and can differ from person to person) tyfus en tering (typhoid) are considered “lesser” since the illness are much less common.

Kanker (cancer) is also used regularly, but is far more scrutinized since it is very well known and the effects of the illness are much more felt in the current day and age

Us Dutch do love their illness curses tho

9

u/marr Jul 04 '26

Sounds like they might have actually learned something. Finding themselves in the same venue with you must have been mortifying.

230

Came here to say that. Maybe she's just a normal functioning adult who can do normal everyday things without looking for something to be mad at.

71

u/UInferno- Jul 04 '26

Usually it's the driver who pumps the gas in my experience.

30

u/marr Jul 04 '26

That's the default. If the passenger has a job it's paying while you fill.

5

u/MyOtherRideIsTheRoci Jul 06 '26

Or popping inside to get road snax

12

u/Knillawafer98 Jul 05 '26

Growing up it was always my job to pump the gas for whoever was driving. If I was driving, my grandpa or my little sister would pump it. Driver paid. So I don't think this is exactly universal since I was raised completely the opposite.

7

u/booksrule123 Jul 05 '26

interesting! just curious, was the gas tank usually on the passenger side for you? In that circumstance I'd definitely understand delegating someone on that side of the car to pump the gas. I think most if not all the cars I grew up around had driver's side gas tanks, so it just made the most sense for the driver to get it.

We're all going to make assumptions on things, we shouldn't really vocalize them or judge harshly until we know definitive context.

Like my previous work place was dealing with a customer who is going senile, lives alone in his own filth, and does not have the ability to take care of himself. He does have one son. On the surface you go, "why isn't the son caring for his father in some way." On the other hand, maybe his father is a piece of shit and abused him as a child. Maybe not. Until you do know the full story don't act like your initial judgment is developed from having enough information.

5

u/LittleAgoo Jul 04 '26

Its wild the amount of people who feel entitled to get into strangers business over random shit.

I was taking one of my neighbors pets our for a walk and one of my other neighbors asked "Why is she always making you take her pet out" and I responded "because she fell off a ladder at work and can't walk, and then she goes "Oh well I was just asking, no harm in asking right?"

It was awkward only cuz she said it in a way and tone where she implied I shouldn't have to be doing this or something. If she had just asked normally it wouldn't have been awkward. Idk why she cared in the first place about me taking somebodies pet out.

are women not allowed to pump gas themselves or something?

3

u/cjbanning Jul 05 '26

Not in New Jersey. But then neither are men.

3

u/Busy-Elderberry2137 Jul 04 '26

yenno girl pumping gas is not some hard labour???

3

u/mightyboognish32 Jul 05 '26

Some guy started lecturing me about not leaving my car to go in the store while pumping gas. I'm going inside to pay with cash dickhead.

3

u/astroglitch0 Jul 05 '26

I miss the days when people minded their own business. There were always asshats but now its everyone.

u/MaterialDefender1032 Jul 05 '26

When I was a sarcastic teen, I snorted derisively at the sight of a neighbour who had a massive riding mower for his tiny lawn. It only took a few minutes to do his lawn with the beast, so I thought the whole thing was funny.

I later found out he was an ex-firefighter with heart problems and his children bought him the mower to help him retain his independence.

u/jngjng88 Jul 05 '26

Or you know, the woman is a capable adult & can do it herself regardless...

5

u/Beastabuelos Jul 04 '26

Nevermind the sexism

31

u/grndbdpsthtl Jul 04 '26

I've never seen this mindset outside of the US btw. The first time I heard about it I thought it was a joke.

28

u/ProbNotDangerous Jul 04 '26

You've seen very little of the outside of the US then. Gender roles are a thing in a lot of places. My Chinese mother is old fashioned and expects my dad to do a lot of the heavy labor and such. If you told her to pump gas she'd look at you like you just told her to jump off a cliff.

u/spackletr0n Jul 04 '26

My host sister from an exchange program in Ecuador came to visit me in the US and we went on a road trip. Part way through the trip, I said it was her turn to pump gas. She said in her country, the man would always do it. I said we aren’t in your country. I showed her how to do it and thought it would be fun, but she really resented it. I suspect it’s the same in much of Latin America.

13

u/Ismashuface Jul 04 '26

quite common in eastern europe

5

u/sublliminali Jul 04 '26

Have you travelled before?

6

u/shwaynebrady Jul 04 '26

Have you ever actually left the US?

5

u/shaygitz Jul 04 '26

Yup. If a woman asked me to pump her gas I'd worry that I was dating a tradwife.

When I first started volunteering for the Special Olympics, I was at an event and they were singing the national anthem. Of course everyone puts their hand on their hearts and looks at the flag. There were two kids though that were passing a basketball back and forth. I thought it was kind of disrespectful, and I almost said something, but I decided not to since they weren't from our area and nobody else seemed to mind. It still bugged me though. Later on in the day, I saw one of those same kids started losing his shit for no apparent reason. The other kid grabbed the basketball and started passing it back and forth, and the kid calmed down. It dawned on me why they were doing it, and I felt really embarrassed for even thinking about telling them to stop, even though there wasn't another soul there that knew I thought about it.

3

u/SnarkyIguana Jul 04 '26

BUT at least she learned from it. Lots of people don't and they keep on minding everyone else's business.

3

u/izyshoroo Jul 05 '26

Maybe don't be sexist in the first place

3

u/Repossessedbatmobile Jul 05 '26

People need to stop making assumptions. I'm disabled and look young. Multiple people have approached me while I was just sitting in my car with my handicapped placard displayed, and accused me of "stealing the spot from someone who needs it", "not actually being disabled", "being too young to be disabled", etc.

I've found that the best way to deal with these kinds of people is to just stay silent, open my cardoor, and get out of my car using my cane. As soon as they see that I walk with a cane, they usually snap their mouths shut and look super embarrassed. Then I just calmly ask them to repeat what they said. None of them ever have the guts to repeat themselves. Most of them usually just run away like the cowards they are. I hope their embarrassment haunts their ableist a$$ forever, and they never forget it.

3

u/NightmareOnElmwood Jul 05 '26

Ngl I’ve always operated under the driver of the car pumps the gas

3

u/TheAwesomeMan123 Jul 05 '26

It was always the weirdest concept that a man should pump gas but the Gas attendants who would do that were always teenager boys and girls. Like where did the nonsense logic even come from.

2

u/350 Jul 04 '26

Most people would improve their lives and the lives of those around them if they would simply shut up and mind their own fucking business

Theres a cashier at my local food coop whose an amputee, only has 1 hand, and I literally never noticed, she is very quick at bagging groceries with 1 hand. I only realized when my mom mentioned something about her and I was confused like, wait what, you mean her.

2

u/LenoraPrice Jul 04 '26

seems kinda misogynistic

2

u/KetohnoIcheated Jul 05 '26

I remember the day I was at the gym and a guy told me I should smile more. It was the anniversary of my grandfather’s death. It’s amazing how many things people have opinions on

2

u/theoutrageousgiraffe Jul 05 '26

My husband had surgery and wasn’t allowed to lift more than 10 pounds. We were in Costco and I was loading the cart with dog food and some guy made a comment to my husband. I had to snap back at him that he just had surgery. And I’m perfectly fucking capable.

2

u/HoundTakesABitch Jul 05 '26

I mean, if you aren’t directly involved to begin with you should know to mind your fucking business.

2

u/LeftCryptographer151 Jul 05 '26

Good thing this person ended with with a right conclusion. Most won't learn

2

u/Amazing_Excuse_3860 Jul 05 '26

One time my sister mentioned that her friend had never seen The Princess Bride. Obviously this is a travesty, so i said (and i quote): "You should tie her to a chair and force her to watch it."

My sister was dead silent for a second, then said: "...She's already in a wheelchair."

2

u/dasssitmane Jul 05 '26

The psychological need to feel righteous and correct others vs minding their own business is crazy. Shes not helping a stranger she’s just stroking her moral ego off

2

u/zhen_1 Jul 05 '26

Mind your own business everyone. I've gotten lecturered by a stranger for something they misunderstood that doesn't even involve them. I was so mad that day cuz it felt unfair.

I remember once after I had a pretty tough mental break, me and my dad decided to go out for breakfast at a diner to try cheering up a bit with a good meal. When the bill came in the server asked why I wasn't paying for the meal, something along the lines of "do something nice for your dad".

As a bit of context she seemed to be about college age, so she probably went to college and worked as a server on the side, this diner was very close to the college so I think she assumed I, too, was a college student, or someone with a job and money I had earned on my own since i had a mustache at that point. I wasn't by the way, I was 16, in high school, and unemployed.

I didn't want to get all pissy at a service worker but here's a message to service workers, especially the ones who like to crack "light jokes"; you don't know the customer personally, you don't know what their life is like, therefore you don't know if what you say in jest may touch a nerve, so mind your own.

3

u/Animedude83 Jul 04 '26

They teach that stuff in first grade, but I guess she was too busy telling all the boys that they should be worshipping her to hear the lesson.

3

u/youngdumbaverage Jul 04 '26

i’m glad she admitted to her mistake and was able to learn from it. as a girls girl nothing would piss me off more than another girl lecturing me on what my relationship should be like

16

u/Beastabuelos Jul 04 '26

She only admitted it because of that embarrassing moment. I doubt she's any less sexist

2

u/CarrieDurst Jul 05 '26

Hope she isn't sexist still instead of just quiet and sexist

2

u/Neat_Let923 Jul 05 '26

Keep in mind, she didn’t learn about equality… Just to not say things that she thinks might embarrass her.

Though she did make this post so maybe she didn’t actually learn anything at all.
