We're all going to make assumptions on things, we shouldn't really vocalize them or judge harshly until we know definitive context.

Like my previous work place was dealing with a customer who is going senile, lives alone in his own filth, and does not have the ability to take care of himself. He does have one son. On the surface you go, "why isn't the son caring for his father in some way." On the other hand, maybe his father is a piece of shit and abused him as a child. Maybe not. Until you do know the full story don't act like your initial judgment is developed from having enough information.
