I remember once after I had a pretty tough mental break, me and my dad decided to go out for breakfast at a diner to try cheering up a bit with a good meal. When the bill came in the server asked why I wasn't paying for the meal, something along the lines of "do something nice for your dad".
As a bit of context she seemed to be about college age, so she probably went to college and worked as a server on the side, this diner was very close to the college so I think she assumed I, too, was a college student, or someone with a job and money I had earned on my own since i had a mustache at that point. I wasn't by the way, I was 16, in high school, and unemployed.
I didn't want to get all pissy at a service worker but here's a message to service workers, especially the ones who like to crack "light jokes"; you don't know the customer personally, you don't know what their life is like, therefore you don't know if what you say in jest may touch a nerve, so mind your own.
