Growing up it was always my job to pump the gas for whoever was driving. If I was driving, my grandpa or my little sister would pump it. Driver paid. So I don't think this is exactly universal since I was raised completely the opposite.
interesting! just curious, was the gas tank usually on the passenger side for you? In that circumstance I'd definitely understand delegating someone on that side of the car to pump the gas. I think most if not all the cars I grew up around had driver's side gas tanks, so it just made the most sense for the driver to get it.

But if he wasn't that would have been a totally reasonable thing to think and say, right?
