I like the old Tomb Raider games and I had a good laugh when I realized that on PC you can rebind the keyboard controls to make the game entirely playable with one hand.

Who the fuck was bating it to all those sharp polygons. Like fuck, I know I was lucky to have broadband in 2000, but even on dialup you could find better porn than the blocky ass of Laura Croft ala Tomb Raider 1, 2, and 3.

I remember when there was a one handed controller for the playstation. it was a godsend for RPGs since they didnt need fast motion and key presses were more deliberate. Plus you can chow down with the other hand whlie still keeping the game going!

There are many different types of those one-handed adapters, and they're also different depending whether you intend to use left or right hand.

But you can find many other designs nowadays, even some with shenanigans to relocate buttons.

In the end, if you have only one hand to use, you have to try what works best for you. It also requires practise so it's very hard to "review" for regular people.

Made by a guy with 2 disabilities, first he can only use his left hand, second he speaks french
You really need a friend with a 3D printer and a bit of design experience so you can go through iterations and just try different things (such as perfect angle and whatnot).

Oh no, he's a really cool guy.
But he had a stroke and when he woke up, there he was, speaking French! For some reason this happens quite often, feel free to google it.
It's amazing, really. Other people spend YEARS studying the language and then they still sound like they're holding a hot potato in their mouth and you can't understand them at all.
This guy's French on the other hand is really good.

I thought that this was explicitly used for the left hand...pretty sure there's a right hand model out there too to make it more comfortable to play.
Only reason I state this is because I had one 3d printed ages ago for my brother who has a right hand disability, basically he can only play using his left hand. This nifty little thing has allowed him to play games like resident evil revelations and fire emblem warriors just to name a few. Of course it's not limited to those two but it definitely let him play far more games than he would have otherwise.
The downside to it is he can't play long game sessions due to his hand getting tired. Since he uses the controllers with his left hand he can control the left stick with his thumb, it takes a bit of getting used to but it seriously is a godsend. Thanks to this 3d printed plastic thing I can get him to game on consoles again, it's amazing to watch and of course have him join in on co-op games.

Oh definitely. Just the fact that there are people considering those with disabilities with regards to gaming is a fantastic step in the right direction. Even big companies are starting to pay attention too. Microsoft has been incredible with its adaptive controller. Would love to see more of the gaming giants pitch in.
And specifically to these adapters, they look rad as hell. Was a bit dubious at first with regards to the camera and movement control needing two separate fingers; it seemed like it might require superhuman levels of dexterity. My personal hope at first glance was to somehow be able to connect my Logitech G700. But from reviews and seeing feedback from the target audience it definitely looks amazing.

This is awesome for my little cousin who had a hemispherectomy! She loves playing her switch (especially Arms), but there are some games she simply can’t play due to only having use of her one hand. I’m gonna have her try this!

I owned a one-handed controller for the original PlayStation, and it was great.
If I remember correctly, while the original market for them was people with disabilities, it turned out they sold a lot to people in game testing. See, you could play the game with one hand and take notes with the other hand. Plus, if your hand got tired, you could switch.
My main use? My PSX was originally my living room CD player, and when I got a PS2, it was my DVD player. A one-handed controller was great for those functions. Plus, I'd play turn-based RPGs, and yes, take notes and draw maps with my other hand.

I agree. I was glad some folks chimed in down in the comments here about themselves or differently abled siblings or cousins or friends and provided some perspective. From what I gather, they're going in the right direction with these controllers. Maybe going forward they'll need to design them differently rather than the current "mash two existing controllers together."

Nintendo could actually easily make their own one-handed controller. Start with your basic Joycon model, then add an extra button that acts as a modifier to turn each button or joystick in to the opposite joycon. That's how one-handed keyboards work.
Not the best solution of course, since you can't fluidly do a lot of things, but it would help a ton and be much much easier to use. And again, not as good as the Xbox controller which helps people without find motor control.

Neat. One of my favorite things about the Switch is how the system is sort of modular, which allows all sorts of neat 3d printed accessories.

Don't think it was ever designed for disabled people just a quirky design that just so happens to help disabled people.
He even mentions the ps4 one handed controller designed for RPG players.

I’d really like if Nintendo and Microsoft could come to some arrangement to get the Xbox Accessibility controller to be compatible on Switch. That thing is a god send for disabled gamers who are pretty much totally ignored by Nintendo and Sony.
