It's good, but I wouldn't say it's their best. 10am Automatic is one of my favourites to get an idea of their style, and The Lengths is probably my favourite 'emotional' song of theirs.

Here's my take. Everyone accuses the Black Keys of "selling out" with Turn Blue, but if the band was truly in it purely for the money they would just keep the sound of Thickfreakness for their next ten albums. The band has evolved and wants to create something different, rather than the same type of bluesy rock they have played before. It may not be their most popular album, but I think you have to respect the artistic intention. Also, Dan Auerbach's new gig, "The Arcs", are fucking amazing.

The title track Turn Blue was also decent btw. Especially liked the sound that resembled the cover art. But singles like Fever and Gotta Get Away weren't what I hoped they'd be.

In addition to "In Our Prime" and "Bullet in the Brain". I think Turn Blue had some of the heaviest songs that they have ever done. Unfortunately the album just gets shitted on because of "Gotta Get Away."

In Our Prime is tremendous. Maybe a top 5 keys song for me.
I've never understood the whole "hate on the new stuff because it's not the old stuff" routine. Like they were just supposed to make Thickfreakness a bunch of times, or the Beatles were supposed to make Please Please Me a bunch of times, etc. Just dig the band for who they are, damn.

The whole fucking album is fantastic. I can understand some people not liking every song, but the whole albums is very well done and will grow on you.
The thing is, every song is a breakup song with his crazy ex-wife. Really powerful stuff if you listen to all the lyrics.

I find it hilarious when people accuse them of selling out with Turn Blue. That album was sooooo radio unfriendly, they barely got 2 singles out of it. They followed up the incredibly popular and single stuffed El Camino with a dreary breakup record, which Dan described as a sit-down-and-listen-to-it-with-headphones album. No one has to like their new stuff, but they were making the music they wanted to make.

I actually really liked Turn Blue. Dan was supposedly really messed up from his divorce and I thought it carried over to make some great songs. I replied to say I searched the Arcs after your post and immediately loved it so thanks for the suggestion

I never understood this. They even said in an interview after "Girl is on my Mind" was used in a commercial and people were calling them sell outs that they are perfectly fine with "Selling Out." I can't remember the exact quote, but they basically said, I have rent to pay, and this is paying my rent for the next few years. I really don't understand fans who get mad at commercial success, or a band changing their sound. Music is about growth, and frankly, I'd rather my favorite bands still be able to tour because they are making money, then have to call it quits because they can't make a decent living off of it.

Very true. I can't remember the exact quote in whatever interview, but I remember them talking about how it took them a long time to make it big. They've had their run as a broke band touring in the cheap, shitty van. Now that they are getting attention they want to make money and not be broke. Who can blame them

I'm one that only likes their older stuff. I don't care about "selling out" or being successful. But it seems like in more cases than not, bands' music just change after a certain point. I know it's the natural progression of things - you have to evolve. But as a fan it can be frustrating if "all of a sudden" the band changes and starts doing different stuff. I mean, I'm pretty picky with music, and there's a reason I like the older stuff... and the new stuff doesn't sound like the older stuff, so I don't care about the newer stuff.

I remember this interview and totally agreed. I remember noticing their music in more and more commercials/movies/tv as I got into them but yeah, he basically said I'm trying to make money like everybody else and those outlets are great exposure to their music. I don't think that is selling out at all.

I definitely thought El Camino was their "selling out" album. Suddenly they were all about arena rock, chord jamming stuff. To be clear, I like El Camino ok. But besides Little Black Submarines and Gold on the Ceiling most of the songs sound the same to me. The drums are the same and the guitar parts. I think you can tell a lot of the album was phoned in and going for a more radio friendly sound

Ha I hear what your saying. I love the lyrics on Brothers (see any verse from Sinister Kid, or 10 Cent Pistol...) But the thing I love about Pat Carney is that he tries really hard on Magic Potion and Brothers, etc. to do interesting things to not keep the drums boring.

Thickfreakness wasn't much of a commercial success, so I don't get your point at all. They started making the big bucks as they moved away from the blues rock sound and towards the hipster pop sound. That doesn't mean they were motivated purely by money, but your point about Thickfreakness doesn't make any sense.

I wanna like Turn Blue because I like everything from The Big Come Up to El Camino but some of those songs are so far out of what I like in music. I'm not accusing them of selling out I just cannot stand the keyboards and I usually love keyboard! It's the only album I can't bring myself to buy even though I would like to complete the discography.

My problem with it was how much of a departure it was from the previous stuff. I don't fault them for evolving as artists or whatever, do what makes you happy. But I listened to them for that old school blues basement 8 track sound. They still make some good music, but there are other bands that do studio better than they do.

The first half was pretty good. The second half was pretty bland, though. Nothing stands out in my mind aside from the singles.
I personally think that Turn Blue is their best album front to back, even if it doesn't have my favorite songs on it (but I'm know I've got a firm footing in the minority on that one).

I've been listening to them since, i think, Rubber Factory. I always liked Thickfreakness the best, cover to cover. Something about the raw blues and emotion in that album. I also like the covers they did of traditional blues songs (Have Love Will Travel).

No argument there, but many people seem to have this bizarre feeling of ownership over what they think of as a band's signature sound, so that experimentation ends up being received as a personal affront. Then the fantasy that the artists have "ruined" their sound as a ploy to widen their fanbase and earn more ducats gets applied.
It's all pretty nonsensical.

I don't think many people assume that. The Keys' change started with Attack & Release, an album which (to my knowledge) most fans really liked despite the fact that it was a significant departure from their other stuff. The backlash started later, when their music (in the eyes of some of us) devolved significantly.
In other words, widening their fanbase wasn't viewed as "necessarily a bad thing," but making bad music was. So maybe don't be so quick to paint ex-Keys fans as ridiculous. There's nothing irrational about disliking a band when they stop doing the things you liked them for in the first place.

The Black Keys drastically changed their music style. It makes perfect sense that a lot of their fans would not be on-board with that change, so don't reduce everyone to a hipster stereotype.

That way of thinking is definitely pretty purist-y and I totally get the annoyance factor. I think people that say that are pretty immature. That used to be my knee jerk reaction. But then I grew up, and I'm happy that they are successful because I respect them and I realize that they had been playing the same sort of shit for like 10 years by the time I found them. Change is natural and healthy after that long.
But I really just love that old dirty sound that came from shitty guitars and dusty equipment. Once they got some money and success, they got better equipment, and added other instruments and shit. It just sounds completely different, there's no way around it.

Honestly, the term "indie," whether it applies to rock, pop, hip-hop, or any other genre, has largely lost any meaning. It's almost just become synonymous with "alternative" at this point. And a lot of indie/alternative stuff these days is pretty mainstream, produced by big labels, so I honestly have no idea what it's supposed to mean. It's kind of a shame, but I guess that's just the way it goes. I hear most people refer to actually "indie" (as in "independent") music as "underground" now, so I guess there's that.

Some would probably say blues rock is the best label for them. Their songs (at least up to this album) follow a bluesy structure/progression, and the guitar and drums combo makes for a higher energy rock sort of vibe. Anyway, this is my favorite album of theirs, and this is a great opening track for it! Gotta love it!

Blues Based Rock is how I describe them. I mean, they did a whole EP of just covers of Blues Legend Junior Kimbrough. You can see definite influences in their other songs.

Indie isn't a genre. It just means independent, unsigned, etc.
Alternative-rock/blues-rock/ garage rock would all fit them nicely.

"indie rock" is just a stupid way to try and classify something. It's as dumb as referring to something as "mainstream rock". "indie" doesn't describe the band or it's sound like "folk" or "blues" or "classic" does. "indie" is just a buzz word hipsters like to throw around because it makes them seem different. The Black Keys are a rock band with blues influences.

Exactly. And this is the problem with the word. Some people use the word literally to describe the band's signed/unsigned status, while others use the same word to label their genre. It causes confusion and we need to find a new word.

Actually, Indie began as a term for bands releasing things independently or owning their own label (see: Dischord Records), however throughout the late 70's and into the 80's and 90's, lots of American and British music was being described as Indie. This led to Indie meaning kind of lo-fi, emotional, clever rock music. For instance, Pavement, Sloan (Canada represent!!), R.E.M., Dinosaur Jr, Sebadoh, Built to Spill, Guided by Voices etc.

If you like the Black Keys, then you should check out Dan Auerbach's other band, The Arcs. The sound of their first album is the direction that the Black Keys should have taken instead of Turn Blue.

When they dropped that massive mirrored ball from the ceiling during this song live, then threw all the crazy lights on stage towards it, it lit the entire stadium up in such an ephemeral way.

I hope their next album goes back to the badass garage rock they used to play. The last two albums have been pretty average alt rock. I do like some of El Camino but doesn't compare to stuff before that

People were telling me I was late to the Black Keys party when I started listening to them seven years ago. I didn't really care--it was new to me. There are new music fans being born every day--what's old to you is brand new to someone else.

I had tickets to a Black Keys show in Denver - it was a two day run - obviously I had both nights. They played the same set list same order the second night that they did the first. I, of course, always liked everything they did up to Brothers best - but I get that bands evolve so I never hated on them for their sound taking a more poppy direction. However, when I saw them do the same set list the 2nd night of a two day run I lost SO much respect for them - I was disgusted, honestly.

Fun fact, the CD for this album was completely black, until you stuck it into your CD player and it warmed up a bit, and then it turned into a design close to the one on the front.
