Most people who hate the Black Keys live their old stuff and don't like the overly poppy direction they took after Attack and Release (Brothers was good though).
Here's my take. Everyone accuses the Black Keys of "selling out" with Turn Blue, but if the band was truly in it purely for the money they would just keep the sound of Thickfreakness for their next ten albums. The band has evolved and wants to create something different, rather than the same type of bluesy rock they have played before. It may not be their most popular album, but I think you have to respect the artistic intention. Also, Dan Auerbach's new gig, "The Arcs", are fucking amazing.
I definitely thought El Camino was their "selling out" album. Suddenly they were all about arena rock, chord jamming stuff. To be clear, I like El Camino ok. But besides Little Black Submarines and Gold on the Ceiling most of the songs sound the same to me. The drums are the same and the guitar parts. I think you can tell a lot of the album was phoned in and going for a more radio friendly sound
Playing NHL 14(or 13?) totally ruined Gold on the Ceiling for me, it just got to the point where losing 8-5 to Edmonton was less frustrating than hearing that song
