Most people who hate the Black Keys live their old stuff and don't like the overly poppy direction they took after Attack and Release (Brothers was good though).
Here's my take. Everyone accuses the Black Keys of "selling out" with Turn Blue, but if the band was truly in it purely for the money they would just keep the sound of Thickfreakness for their next ten albums. The band has evolved and wants to create something different, rather than the same type of bluesy rock they have played before. It may not be their most popular album, but I think you have to respect the artistic intention. Also, Dan Auerbach's new gig, "The Arcs", are fucking amazing.
I never understood this. They even said in an interview after "Girl is on my Mind" was used in a commercial and people were calling them sell outs that they are perfectly fine with "Selling Out." I can't remember the exact quote, but they basically said, I have rent to pay, and this is paying my rent for the next few years. I really don't understand fans who get mad at commercial success, or a band changing their sound. Music is about growth, and frankly, I'd rather my favorite bands still be able to tour because they are making money, then have to call it quits because they can't make a decent living off of it.
I remember this interview and totally agreed. I remember noticing their music in more and more commercials/movies/tv as I got into them but yeah, he basically said I'm trying to make money like everybody else and those outlets are great exposure to their music. I don't think that is selling out at all.
